As a boy, Charles Robert Darwin(达尔文) collected anything that caught his interest: insects, coins and interesting stones. He was not very clever, but Darwin was good at doing the things that interested him.
His father was a doctor, so Darwin was sent to Edinburgh to study medicine, and was planned to follow a medical career. But Charles found the lectures boring. Then his father sent him to Cambridge University to study to be a priest. While at Cambridge, Darwin’s
interest in zoology and geography grew. Later he got a letter from Robert FitzRoy who was planning to make a voyage around the world on a ship, the Beagle. He wanted a naturalist to join the ship, and Darwin was recommended(推荐). That voyage was the start of Darwin’s great life As the Beagle sailed around the world, Darwin began to wonder how life had developed on earth. He began to observe everything. After he was home, he set to work, getting his collection in order. His first great work The Zoology of the Beagle was well received, but he was slow to make public his ideas on the origin of life.
Later Darwin and Wallace, another naturali st who had the same opinions as Darwin, produced a paper together. Darwin’s great book “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection”(《物种起源》) appeared. It attracted a storm. People thought that Darwin was saying they were descended from monkeys. What a shameful idea! Although most scientists agreed that Darwin was right, the Church was still so strong that Darwin never received any honors for his work.
Afterwards, he published another great work, The Descent of Man. His health grew worse, but he still worked. “When I have to give up observation, I shall die,” he said. He was still working on 17, April, 1882. He was dead two days later.

C. let him change his hobbies
D. have him give up his collection
22. According to the passage, Charles Darwin’s whole life was changed by _____.

B. his collection of coins
C. the naturalists at Cambridge
D. the voyage of the Beagle23. The underlined part “they were descended from monkeys” probably means “_____”.
A. they gave monkeys life
B. they were different from monkeys
C. they were developed from monkeys
D. they had to live with monkeys

Sleep deprivation(缺失)is an important hidden factor in lowering the achievement of school pupils, according to researchers carrying out international education tests.
It is a particular problem in richer countries with sleep experts linking it to the use of mobile phones and computers in bedroom late at night. Sleep deprivation is such a serious problem that lessons have to be dragged down to a lower level to suit sleep-deprived learners, the study found. The international comparison, carried out by Boston College, found the United States to have the highest number of sleep-deprived students, with 73% of 9- and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13- and 14-year-olds identified by their teachers as being
negatively affected.
In literacy(读写能力) tests there were 76% of 9- and 10-year-olds lacking sleep. This was much higher than the international average of 47% of primary pupils needing more sleep and 57% among the secondary age group.
Other countries with the most sleep-deprived youngsters were New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Australia, England, Ireland and France. High-performing Finland is also among the most lacking in sleep. Countries with the best records for getting enough sleep include Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Japan and Malta.
The analysis was part of the huge date-gathering process for global education rankings, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS)and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study(PIRLS)
“I think we underestimate the impact of sleep. Our data show that across countries internationally, on average, children who have more sleep achieve higher in maths, science and reading. That is exactly wh at our data show,” says Chad Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center.
“It’s the same link for children who are lacking basic nutrition,” says Mr Minnich, based at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. “If you are una ble to concentrate, to attend mentally, you are unable to achieve at your best level, because your mind and body are in need of something more basic. Sleep is a fundamental need for all children. If teachers report such large proportions of children suffer ing from lack of sleep, it’s having a significant impact. But worse than that, teachers are having to adjust their instruction based on those children who are suffering from a lack of sleep. The children who are suffering from a lack of sleep are driving d own instruction.”
That means that even the children who are getting enough sleep are still suffering from this sleep-related lowering.
24.What did the researchers of Boston College try to find?
A. Why children don’t get enough sleep
B. How many hours children sleep every night
C. The relationship between sleep and test results
D. The relationship between sleep and health
25. Many children suffer from sleep deprivation because _________.

D. modern technological devices consume a lot of their time
26. Which of the following countries has the most sleep-deprived students?
A. Japan
B. Malta
C. Finland
D. Portugal
27. Why are children who get enough sleep also victims?
A. Because they are disturbed by sleep-deprived students
B. Because teaching is driven down by sleep-deprived students
C. Because they have to spend time helping sleep-deprived students
D. Because the teachers waste time disciplining sleep-deprived students

Teaching is more than leadership. Some of the teacher’s time and effort is directed toward instruction, some toward evaluation. But it is the teacher as a group leader who creates an effective organizational structure and good working environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. A group that is totally disorganized, unclear about its goals, or constantly fighting among its members will not be a good learning group. The leadership pattern includes helping to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place.
On the first day of class, the teacher faces a room filled with individuals. Perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity, no set of rules for conduct in the group, no feeling of belonging. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships that encourages working together.
Standards and rules must be set to keep order, make sure of justice and protect individual rights, but do not contradict school policy. What happens when one student hurts another’s individual rights? Without clear regulations agreeable to t he students and teachers, the classroom can become chaotic. Students may break rules they did not know existed. If standards are set without participation from the class, students may spend a great deal of creative energy in destroying the class environment or finding ways to break rules.
No matter how skillful the teacher is in uniting students and creating a positive atmosphere, the task is never complete. Regular maintenance is necessary. Conflicts ari se. The needs of individual members change. A new kind of learning task requires a new organizational structure. Sometimes outside pressures such as holidays, upcoming tests or sport competitions, or family troubles cause stress in the classroom. One task for the teacher is to recreate a positive environment by helping students deal with conflict, change, and stress.
32. The underlined word “maintain” in Para.1 probably means_______.
A. keep
B. build
C. recreate
D. evaluate
33. According to the author, the teacher should _______.
A. free students from outside pressures
B. set the standards and rules on his own
C. be responsible for a well-o rganized class
D. focus more on instruction and evaluation
34. From the passage we can learn that ______.
A. rules cannot be changed once they’re formed
B. outside pressures can not cause tension among students
C. if the teacher well unites his students, he then will finish his task
D. if rules are not acceptable both to students and teachers, the classroom can be a mess
35. What is the author’s main purpose of writi ng the passage?
A. To provide information for teaching.
B. To show the importance of teaching a class.
C. To study the teacher’s behavior in the classroom.
D. To compare the teacher’s behavior with the students’ in class.

One sentence from the news in Washington has remained in my mind since a trip last summer: “When you see people run against the cro wd escaping 61 the danger, they are 62 (probable) firefighters, police or journalists.”
I think this is most true for the firefighters. Whenever and wherever 63 (disaster) happen — 9/11 Attacks in New York 14 years ago or the explosion in Tianjin on Wednesday night —it is always the firefighters 64 take the lead to run to the very center, saving lives by 65 (risk) their own. I cried today near the explosion site, not because of the smoke from the ongoing fire 66 because of a short message a firefighter sent to
a trusted friend that went viral online. It reads, “If I cannot make it, my father is 67 (you) father; and please reme mber 68 (sweep) my mother’s tomb.” I was thrilled later to learn that he did make it.
“Everyone knows it’s 69 (danger) to be a firefighter. But he has always liked it and has done it for 12 years,” his father said. “He survived this time, but no one knows what 70 (happen) next time.”

As it is known to us, fewer and fewer students do sports regularly, what makes them weak and easily tired. There are many reasons about this. First of all, some of the students complained that they have too many homework, resulting in less time to take exercise. Beside, some of them think that it is very difficulty for them to keep doing exercise, because it
is a very hard thing.
Because lack of physical activities, many students are in poor health. I suggest that our school must take measures to encourage more students to take part in sports. For us
students, no matter what busy we are, it is necessary to spare some time to do exercise. 第二节书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Bob,
Last week I did a survey among the students in my class on what university they want to choose. Now I’m writing to tell you the resu lts.
Twenty-five percent of my classmates want to choose universities in our province. They say they are more likely to be admitted if they apply to these universities. And they needn’t change their lifestyle too much. Seventy percent of them would like to choose universities
in other provinces. Being away from home, they can become more independent and there are more universities for them to choose from. The rest five percent of my classmates plan to choose foreign universities. One reason why they want to go abroad is that they can learn more about different cultures. M: Thank you very much. I only need them for a few days.

W: Your clothes are all over the floor and your bed is unmade. And when was the last time you picked up your toys?
M: I will try to be neater.
W: Clean everything up now, and when you’re finished, we’ll all go on a picnic.

M: I want to send this package to Australia.
W: Can you put it on the scales, please? Airmail or surface mail?
M: How much will it cost for airmail?
W: $7.85.
M: And how much for surface mail?
W: $2.50.
M: Oh, surface mail then. Can I register it?
W: Yes, but that will be $5.00 extra. And you’ll need to fill in a custom’s form. M: Oh, never mind. Have you got any airmail stickers?
W: Yes, sure. How many?
M: Can I take a whole sheet? Thank you.

W: Did you hear about that guy who climbed a skyscraper?
M: I don’t think so. Was it on the TV news last night?
W: Maybe. Someone told me abou t it this morning. This guy calls himself “The Human Fly”.
He climbed up the skyscraper with nothing but some big cups!
M: I suppose he got arrested.
W: He sure did! As soon as he got to the top of the building, the policemen were there to grab him!
M: And he’ll have to pay a fine, of course.
W: In this guy’s case it looks as if he might have to go to jail, too!

M: Where are you going, ma’am?
W: The Art Museum.
M: All right. Are you going to visit the museum?
W: No, one of my friends works there and he wants to see me. How long does it take to get there from this hotel?
M: Well, that depends on the traffic. But usually it shouldn’t be more than fifteen minutes.
What time are you supposed to meet him?
W: 5:30 p.m.
M: Don’t worry. We still have nearly o ne hour left.
W: Good. Before I forget, how can I get downtown from the museum?
M: Well, you can take a bus, but you would have to change buses a couple of times. The easiest way is to take a taxi, and it won’t be very expensive.
W: OK, I’ll think about it. Thank you.

W: Hi, Robert. When do you plan to go home? Right after you graduate from here?
M: You don’t know the good news. My father called this morning and said I could stay another year.
W: Hey, that’s great. What are you going to do? Get a master’s degree?
M: No, I am going to work.
W: Work? You cannot work here. You have been complaining about that for four years. M: Yes, I can. I can work for a year to get practical training in my field.
W: You mean you are going to work as an engineer?
M: We ll, not exactly, but close. One of my uncle’s friends has a small construction company in Austin, and he says I could work for him.
W: Wow, I go away for a weekend and you have gotten a job and everything.

Our family is now trying to decide where to go for our vacation this summer. Our son Tom wants to go to Yellowstone Park again to see the bears, but our daughter Susie doesn’t
agree. We went there last summer and what an experience it was! When we got there, we put up our tent and went to explore. When we returned, we saw a bear enter our tent. “What shall we do?” Susie asked. “Maybe we could make him leave if we put some honey o utside for him to eat.” Tom suggested. Then I said, “How are you going to get the honey? It’s in the tent.” So we could do nothing but wait there for the bear to come out. We could hear the bear turning over everything inside our tent. We waited and waited. It was very late and the bear still wouldn’t come out, so we decided to sleep in the car.。
