For farm families the automobile is very helpful. It has made it possible for them to travel to tow n very ofte n for bus in ess and for pleasure, and also to tran sport their childre n to dista nt schools. Mothers of victims (受害者)of such accidents have formed an organization called MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving ). These women want to prevent further tragedies ( 悲剧).They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest drinking age. Since many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow stude nts, and so on. These are the questi ons I want to discuss with you today.
First, let s talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as in troduct ion to sociology or econo mics ofte n have as many as two or three hun dred stude nts, especially at large universities. In lectures, it ' very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn ' t e textbooks; you have to atte nd lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussi on for every class you take. The discussi on sect ion is a small group meet ing usually with fewer tha n thirty stude nts where you can ask questio ns about the lectures, the readi ng, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussi on sect ions.
If your major is chemistry, or physics, or ano ther scie nee, you 'll also have to spe nd several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experime nts. This means that scie nee majors spe nd more time in the classroom than non science majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.
43. The main purpose of this text is _______ .
A. to help the stude nts to lear n about uni versity life
B. to persuade the stude nts to atte nd lectures
C. to en courage the stude nts to take part in discussi ons
D. to advise the stude nts to choose proper majors
44. We can lear n from the passage that uni versity professors _______
A. spe nd about 5 hours on lectures each week
B. must join the stude nts in the discussi on sect ions
C. prefer to use textbooks in their lectures
D. require the stude nts to read bey ond the textbooks
45. A discussi on sect ion does NOT in clude _____ .
A. work ing un der the guida nce of uni versity professors
B. talk ing over what the stude nts have read about the courses
C. discuss ing the problems related to the stude nts ' homework
D. rais ing questio ns about what a professor has said in a lecture
46. Accord ing to the author, scie nce majors _____ .
A. have to work harder than non science majors
B. spend less time on their studies than non science majors
C. con sider experime nts more importa nt tha n discussi ons
D. read and write less than non science majors
