Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point fingers or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand two and half feet (69 centimeters) away and at an angle (角度), so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”.
Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is impolite.
Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes very difficult. If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
21.From the first paragraph we can know that________.
A.gestures don’t mean anything in a talk
B.gestures can help us to express our meaning
C.we can learn a language well without its body language

23.When an American friend is interested in what you are talking, he would________.A.say “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”
B.stare at you

You can improve your child’s hearing memory considera bly. Once his hearing memory has been greatly improved, he’ll be able to use and remember what he listens to in class. The success of these suggestions depends upon your ability to use your child’s natural desire to take part in games he finds simple and f un.
A good way to begin is to read aloud a sentence from a book suitable for your child’s reading age. Then ask your youngster to repeat the sentence back to you correctly. Next, reread the sentence, leaving out a particular word. See if your child can tell the word you left out. At the beginning use only simple sentences. Gradually, increase the length of the sentences. Make sure you don’t rush things along too quickly, or your child may become discouraged and tired of the game.
Take your child shopping with you often. He has to remember a list of items you want to buy in the supermarket. At first, ask him to remember only a few things. Then, as he shows increased ability to remember, make the list longer and longer. Praise him often and warmly when he shows increased ability to remember things. He’ll become proud of his “good” memory and will happily play the game.
Encourage your child to learn easy and short poems. As his ability to do this becomes stronger, encourage him to remember longer poems. Do the same with songs.
24. The suggestions will be successful if you ________.
A. can increase your child’s interest in the activity
B. force your child to take in more practice

D. find simple and funny games for your child

C. the way you help your child do shopping
D. another way to improve your child’s hearing memory

Our local Community (社区) Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town.I have been a member for four years now and I've taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have even made a video.
But it isn't all just enjoyment. We have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a special support group to help young people stop smoking.
We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local home for the elderly. This idea came from a school visit to a home for the elderly. My class spent an afternoon at the home and everyone found the visit very meaningful.
The old people at the home were excited by our visit. They were very talkative
and they told us their personal stories. During our visit, thehome was full of the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had teatogether. But we realized that life wasn't always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were veryunhappy. They couldn't go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.
Many young people like me have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in the homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.
Since the creation of our visiting group over twenty volunteers have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evening parties and a concert. But I think the individual (单独的) visits are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.

C. has arranged a school visit to the local old people’s home
D. mainly does social work
34. The writer thinks that many children today_______.
A. are not interested in how old people live
B. do not want to get to know old person
