第二部分:阅读理解(共二节,满分40分)
(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
从每题所给的四个选项A,B,C,D中,选出最佳选项。

A
The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.
One such example is the word “matter”. In fact, matter can me an just about anything. It could be one of the most useful wor ds in the English language.
Let’s get the heart of the matter----a matter of principle(原则). If someone says that you owe(欠) him $50, but you don’t, a fr iend might say, “well, you could pay him the $50. it’s not that much money. Then you won’t have to hear him say it anymor e. ”But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It’s a matter of principle.
There is another way to use the word “matter”. But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone, “What’s the matter? ”, it shows you are w orried about the other person. But saying, “What’s the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude(粗鲁
的). In fact, when you say, “What’s the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid. Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it.
Let’s say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Her e, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn’t matt er to ” does not sound rude. In this situation, “it doesn’t matter ” shows you are easy-going(随和的).
No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a ver y useful word. And it’s only a matter of time before you will be come an expert on the use of matter.
21. We can infer(推

They have invaded a river in Australia, a part of the sea in Ca nada and a lake in . They settle in and their population grows. Soon there are thousands of them. They turn water brown an d eat everything in sight.
Experts who study rivers and lakes say goldfish are a real pro blem. And it’s not the fish that started it all. It’s humans. Pet o wners get tired of the little Nemos and Dorys in their fish tanks (鱼
缸). They take their fish to a nearby stream. They send their pets into the wild. It seems more humane than flushing a pet down the toilet. But many invasive species get into rivers and lakes this way.
When goldfish live in open water, they cause big problems. T hese goldfish have more food than goldfish in a tank. That me ans they grow quickly. Some weigh as much as four pounds! Giant goldfish search for plants, fish egg
s, and other treats at the bottom of the river or lake, which ma kes the water cloudy.
Native fish have a hard time living in these conditions. They of ten die. Once goldfish take over
, they are hard to remove. Officials have tried poisoning(毒死) them. But poison kills native species too. The best way t o protect native fish is to keep pet fish out of rivers and lakes i n the first place. People should give unwanted fish back to pet stores. And there are special ponds where pet fish can be left . They can live there without harming other fish.
But sometimes nature solves its own problems. In 2015, offici als in discovered that thousands of goldfish had taken over a lake. Officials thought about feeding the fish to birds. They tho ught about draining and refilling the lake. But before they coul d decide what to do, help came from an unexpected source: A group of hungry pelicans(鹈鹕)ate up all of the invaders.
32. What is the problem mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. The number of goldfish is falling.
B. The meat of goldfish is unhealthy.
C. Goldfish are easily eaten by other fish.
D. Goldfish cause trouble to the environment.
33. What does the author think of what some pet owners do?
A. It is humane.
B. It is harmful.
C. It is misleading.
D. It is meaningless.
34. What may happen after goldfish live in open water?
A. They get really big.
B. They eat native fish.
C. The water becomes attractive.
D. The water becomes p oisonous.
35. How was the problem in solved in 2015?
A. Pelicans ate all of the goldfish.
B. Officials poisoned the goldfish.
C. Officials fed the goldfish to birds.
D. The goldfish were brought to special ponds.

How to make friends at a new school

Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new sch ool. If you think that you will say something that may make the m feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible! Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t ke ep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye con tact with other people. 39 Introduce yourself. Tell them your n ame and where you’re from.
Remember people’s names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other peopl e. 40 Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nicknam e(昵

Be friendly to others.
Making new friends can be hard, too.
Join after-school activities you like.
Never change who you are to try and fit in.

e. ”But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It’s a matter of principle. There is another way to use the word “matter”. But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone, “What’s the matter? ”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What’s the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude(粗鲁
的). In fact, when you say, “What’s the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.
Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it depend s on the context, and how you say it.
Let’s say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with , “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn’t matter to ” does not sound rude. In t his situation, “it doesn’t matter” shows you are easy-going(随和的).
No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it’s only a m atter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter.

Dear Jorge,
Are you enjoying your break from school? My family are now in Sacramento,
California. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capital Building, the nature center,
and the zoo. I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This mo rning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser(老忠实
泉). I had read about it in my book, Sightseeing in California; Where You Should Go. You h ave probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in . This geyser is sometimes ca lled "Little Old Faithful."
When we arrived, California's Old Faithful was only a calm pool of water. The geyser didn't lo ok very deep. "What's the big deal?" I wondered. As I turned, I saw some steam rising from t he water. Before I knew it, there was hot water shooting up about 60 feet into the air. We cou ld not believe our eyes! It continued for almost three minutes.
Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the wa
ter temperature was about 95℃. This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air.
My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than 's Old Faithful Geyser. I'd love
to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home. I'll see you soon!
Your friend,
Bennetto

I have many new teachers in high school, but Lori Runkle, my English Language and Compo sition teacher, is my favorite one.
Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist(新闻记
者). Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the , she has introduced many helpful jo urnalistic writing skills to me.
Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my clas smates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to list en to a journalist’s speech, which helped me better understand current events(时事).
Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the cl assroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language l。
