Unit 15 We’re trying to save the manatees!
Ⅰ. Analysis of the Teaching Material
1. Status and Function
In this unit, students learn to debate an issue. The topic is meaningful and practical to students. It is very important and necessary for students to learn something about it. It is of great benefit to students. It is very useful for students to use the topic to communicate with others in their daily life. I t is also helpful for students to improve their speaking ability. After studying this unit, students should be fully aware of the importance of reducing pollution and protecting animals. We must take action to protect the environment.
(1) The first period mainly gives students listening and oral practice using the target language I am like this animal because I am strong and int elligent. I like water, and I like to eat vegetables.
You’re like an elephant. No.
You’re like a manatee. Yes!
(2) The activities in the second period give students more listening and speaking practice as well as grammar focus to practise the target language. The practice can help students improve students’ listening and speaking skills. It also helps students review the five t enses that they have learned.
(3) The third period provides two letters. Students must learn to get detailed information from the letters.
It is a basic reading skill, and also it is of great help for students to improve their reading skill. Students a lso learn to write a letter to improve their writing skill.
(4) The fourth period not only introduces some new words but also provides students with many different kinds of activities. In this class, students learn how to express their own opinions using the target language.
They can also improve their listening ability.
(5) A lot of practice is designed in the fifth period to train students’ reading and writing skills.
(6) All the activities in the last period in this unit are used to provide writing practice using the target language to review the structures from Unit 11 to Unit 14.
2. Teaching Aims and Demands
(1) Knowledge Objects
In this unit, students learn how to debate an issue and how to express their own opinions using the target language. They also review five tenses they have learned.
(2) Ability Object
To train students’listening, speaking, reading and writing skills using the target language.
(3) Moral Objects
Animals are our friends, But some of them are endangered because of pollution. So we must be fully aware of the importance Of reducing pollution and protecting animals.
In order to live happily and longer, we must ta ke actio n at once to protect animals and the environment.
