It was supposed to be our secret. My hairdresser claimed to possess a special substance that could “blend away” grey hair, which, at 45, I had a 36 of. Sitting before the mirror, I discovered the grey hair was more than I’d been willing to admit. 37 threading its way between the darker hairs, it had 38 whole sectors of my head, especially on the sides and in the back.
My wife argued that grey hair looked terrific on men my age. For 39 , she pointed out George Clooney and Anderson Cooper, who looked terrific no matter what. They were the silver all-stars, and I hated them, not for their age-resistant male beauty but for their ability to 40 themselves. I had read stories such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, whose message seemed to be that when it 41 signs of aging, you can run but you cannot hide—and that the longer you attempt to run, the worse the 42 will be.
One evening at a sandwich shop, after taking my order, one of the girls 43 the counter asked if she could
ask me something. Being asked if you are willing to be asked is always a bad 44 . “What?” I grunted. The girl, who appeared to be 18 or so, continued. “It’s not that I think you look old, 45 when was doo-wop music? Do you remember? The 60s’? The 50s’?” It just got46 . “The 40s’?’’
“Late 50s’, early 60s’, ” I said coolly, wondering if the girl really thought I had been on the47
then, or she merely found me professorial, a man who appeared to be 48 in general knowl edge. “That must have been so 49 ,” she said. “Walking around hearing singing on all the corners!”
I have accepted my grey hair since then. I have had to. The celebrity “silver foxes” don’t 50 me as strongly as they used to. On my good days, I 51 count myself as one of them, convinced that my color shift has revealed a certain mischievousness (俏皮) When asked by my juniors about the 52 past—about doo-wop and the like–I reply with overemphatic (过分强调的)cheerfulness, 53 the questions are absurd but I am too comfortable with myself to take offence at 54 .
The hard part is when I am alone, out on the street, and glimpse a male stranger who looks fully as old as I once 55 not to be. Is that how I appear to others now?
I try not to think about it. I let it go.

You are standing in a hall packed with friends, family, colleagues and peers. You are about to walk onto the stage and address them. You’re expected to sa y something meaningful and profound and everyone is hanging on your every word. You need to be clearly spoken, confident and calm, maybe even funny. How do you feel?
If you’re shaking, sweating and looking for the exit, you’re normal. Most of us are scared of public speaking and yet, as a society, we’re becoming more obsessed with hearing what people have to say: we watch endless TED talks, download podcasts and screen hours of YouTube clips. Being able to address a crowd is no longer the domain of the brave----if you want to get ahead in your career, you need to master it. I’ve done enough public speaking to have picked up some tips and tricks, and these are the ones I rely on most.
The most important thing is to prepare. You don’t have to write out your s peech word by word but get the headline, three key points and the concluding sentence on paper and put bullet points under each. Then run through it and note which of your bullet points made it in and what you added. Adapt your notes and try again. Keep going until you have a structure.
Now it’s time to watch yourself----yes, get out your camera and film yourself. This is how you will see the points that need work and where you can polish it up.
Most of the information the audience will take away will be from your energy and your tone, a little from your words. Once you have sorted out the words, focus on how to exude(散发) the right energy---do you need confidence or humor? I go for confidence so, five minutes before a talk, I try to recall a success I’ve h ad. I focus on the details and aim to bring that feelings of competence to life.
Finally, breathe, We cannot speak without breath, yet it is the first thing we let go of when we are nervous. Settle your breathing before you start. If you lose control of y our breath in the middle, say “Let’s take a moment to think about that last point.” That gives you a pause to collect your breath. The only way to get over a fear of public speaking is to do it, again and again. You will have good and bad experiences but, if you do it enough, you’ll realize that, occasionally, it’s fun.
58.According to the author, why is public speech important to the average?
A. Friendships can be established through it.
B. Public speeches can display our courage.
C. There are more occasions for pubic speeches.
D. It is beneficial to our way up the career ladder.
59. Which of the following tips is recommended by the author?
A. Preparing and writing down every detail.
B. Displaying right energy during the speech.
C. Watching famous films of public speeches.
D. Telling key points and bullet points apart.
60. What view does the author hold about public speaking?
A. It creates more and more fun if we stick to practice.
B. It is easier to practise at home than to perform outside.
C. Experiences of public speaking can delight us sometimes.
D. Attempts to give public speaking tend to fail in the end.

Throwing handfuls of bread to birds has long been seen as harmless enough. But in recent years, some scientists have suggested that bread might not do birds’ digestive systems any good, saying that as uneaten food rots down, the water quality worsens and algal blooms can occur. Plus, by encouraging birds to gather in one place, the build-up of droppings may result in outbreaks of disease too. Meanwhile, many cities have signs telling us not to feed pigeons and gulls, which are considered an “annoyance” due to the mess they make, and scattering bread inevitably attracts rats and mice.
It seems that the public has accepted these warnings, and that fewer of us now feed birds this way. In October, a sign went up in a Derbyshire park claiming that the local birds were dying of starvation, and urging visitors to feed them as before. When online posts about the notice went viral, feathers flew as people debated the benefits of handing out bread to birds.
Paul Stancliffe of the British Trust for Ornithology(BTO) points out that there’s insufficient scientific evidence for bread harming birds, adding that, as little research has been done, it could even turn out to be beneficial. ①“We just don’t know,” he says. Although bread is a heavily processed “unnatural” food intended for humans, that alone may be insufficient grounds for not feeding it to birds.
In the 1980s, the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT) carried out a comparative study of different flocks of mute swans, and the birds that consumed the most bread had weaker muscles, implying that a bread-heavy diet might be the cause. “Our official line is that bread is okay for ducks, geese and swans, but only in moderation,” says WWT’s Peter Morris. “However, this advice comes with several other warnings.” ②The first is that it’s best offered in winter, when there is less plant and insect food around. In spring and summer, too much artificial food may not be a good idea, since young birds have to learn how to look after themselves and natural food will contain a wider range of nutrients to help them grow.
“Just like us, birds need a varied diet to stay healthy,” says a spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds(RSPB). “Although ducks, geese and swans can digest all types of bread, too much can leave them feeling full without giving them all of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.” ③When bird feeding first became popular in the UK in the 19th century, some Victorians encouraged tough love, arguing that such handouts would only make our feathered friends lazy and dependent on welfare.
④Morris says that there is a theory that wild birds can get “hooked” on easy meals, losing interest in other types of food. Another danger, he says, is that birds fed regularly end up accustomed to humans, placing themselves at greater risk of predation(捕食).
61.How can feeding birds with bread affect our urban life?
A.Birds’ mess can attract many rats and mice.
B.Birds’ gathering in one place disturbs our peace.
C.Bread goes bad and the water quality will suffer.
D.Human beings are likely to be infected with bird flu.
62.If birds rely on a bread-heavy diet, there is a strong possibility that ______.
A.they will become bigger in size with stronger muscles
ck of certain nutrients negatively influences their health
C.their digestive system will be damaged by artificial food
D.they would soon choose bread rather than natural food.
63.Where does the sentence “Such moralizing sounds old-fashioned nowadays, but may have a grain of truth.”best suit?
A.①
B. ②
C. ③
D. ④
64.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Is feeding birds a wise choice?
B.Why not feed our bird neighbours?
C. Can we treat birds as friends?
D . When do birds need our food aid?
D.
Every summer evening 1.5 million bats emerge from underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas, on a search for their favorite meals of mosquitoes and other insects. To track their tiny flying prey(猎物),the bats make high-pitched(声调高的)sounds that deflect from an insect back to the bats’ large ears. The information from this process of echolocation (回声定位)tells the flying mammals the precise path of their fast-moving food. But how does any single bat in a crowd of thousands know that the ping it registers is not some other bats’ echo? Navigating this potential interference is not only the province of bats, however. Dolphins and other animals that rely on echolocation must also find ways around the maze of found waves around them.
People want to figure out how bats and dolphins do it because these animals are what Laura Kloepper, an assistant professor of biology at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana, calls “bio-inspiration”—- helping us to find technological solutions to problems in our everyday life. The built-in biology of an echolocating bat holds secrets that would help human researchers develop better “active sensing” devices that imitate what bats do.
Kloepper highlighted the power of bats’ active sensing abiliti es in a presentation at the 176th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America that compared them with the powerful echolocating capabilities of dolphins, in her talk, Kloepper told of how her research group attacked a pair of dolphins with artificial dolphin-like clicks to try to confound them as they chose between two options. Her team challenged the marine mammals by pulling tricks such as adjusting the angle of speakers making the sounds to confuse them as they homed in on their targets of choice. What the humans learned was dolphins use two possible strategies to block out the nonsense noise. They either change the frequency of their calls 一to a higher or lower pitch 一or they change the timing. Either adjustment gives a dolphin a personal call, a signature it can recognize.
Kloepper has, of course, also studied bats. For this research she uses what she calls a “biological drone (生物无人机)” , a trained Harris’s hawk named Belie. Armed with a tiny camera and microphone, Belle wings into the midst of bat crowds and records their many calls for the sake of science. Kloepper says the reason she uses hawks, besides the fact “hawks are super-cool”, is that sending a regular drone with spinning propellers (推进器)into a dense bat crowd “wouldn’t be ideal.” Her team does use drones during night crowds, when the bats fly at greater distances from on another and are less likely to run into the machine.
A dolphin's click is about a 20th the duration of a bat’s call. This difference, Kloepper says, leaves bats better able to make adjustments to their calls. Whereas a dolphin might change pitch, a bat has a slightly more nuanced
repertoire (微妙的技能)to deal with the jamming. “Dolphins make impulsive signals that sound like clicks — sort of if you snapped your fingers together,” Kloepper says — whereas bat calls are more like human whistling. “Sure, we could slightly change some of the characteristics of our fingers snapping,” she notes, " but you could make your whistle go up or down in pitch or even jump between pitches, and you can control how long your whistle is.” Bats show a similar level of fine control over their echolocation, she says.
But the mystery of how bats pull off this jamming countermeasure remains. Researchers next step in solving this challenge is to focus on individual bats and their calls. Kloepper predicts “new electronic hardware to go on our drone and hawk that will allow us to r eally home in on which bat is making which call when it’s in the middle of this massive group.” The dolphins are not left out either. Kloepper plans to expand on her work by challenging the chatty marine mammals with even more interference to see if they can still echolocate.
65.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about ____ .
A.how bio-inspiration got its name
B.the significance of studying echolocation
C.how flying mammals track their prey
D.the similarities between bats and dolphins.
66. The underlined work “confound” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “
A.pressure

C. confuse
D. assist
67. Which is NOT a way dolphins react to the nonsense noise?
A.Making their calls higher.
B.Making their calls lower.
C.Making their calls longer.
D.Making their calls constant.
68. Why does Kloepper choose to use Belie?
A.Because of its great flexibility.
B.Because of its low costs.
C.Because of its adjustable microphone.
D.Because of its advanced propellers.
69. Compared with dolphins, bats can _____ ,
A. make more clicks
B. attract more prey

It’s often heard that love is sharp and hate is sharper, but jealousy is the sharpest as it’s love and hate at the
same time. It’s an emotion which creates negativity, and feelings of fear, anxiety, and insecurity. Jealousy is an ugly green monster which preys on each one of us at different points of our lives. Jealousy is defined as a protective reaction to an imagined threat to a valued relationship, arising from a situation in which the partner’s involvement in an activity with another person is contrary to the jealous person’s definition of their relationship.
Jealousy is an imperfect blend of sadness, anger, disgust, and resentment. It has destroyed many perfect relationships and caused huge emotional distress to the jealous person as well as his family or friends. Extreme cases of jealousy have even been a cause for murders and suicides. Jealousy is one of the most common human emotions and is experienced by either gender. It is not culture specific and shows its presence from the age of 6 months onward.
There are several main common types of jealousy. One of them is workplace jealousy, which is a commonly observed jealousy occurring between colleagues in a workplace. It’s often known to turn up when there is a lack of appreciation for the work and efforts made by an employee. Often, there is a general feeling of jealousy between colleagues with similar job profiles, when only one of them gets promoted, or gets a pay raise. This creates a feeling of disappointment and jealousy in the heart of an employee.
Another common type is platonic jealousy. This type of jealousy is often mistaken as romantic, but one must remember that there is a thin line of difference between the two. This jealousy can most commonly be seen in friendships, when one fears losing a friend to a more interesting or friendly person. The emotional attachment with your own friend is so much that you can’t im agine them with someone else. Platonic jealousy was aptly shown in the popular comic books called Archie where both Betty and Veronica try to vie Archie.
Sibling(兄弟姐妹)jealousy, commonly seen in families across the world, is also one common type of jealousy. There is a general sense of competition amongst children to be their parent’s favorite child. There is a display of jealousy on arrival of a new sibling, on being made to share favorite toys, clothes, or other facilities, on being showered lesser attention, and experiencing lesser love than siblings, on experiencing a negative comparison made between siblings by parents or even when a sibling is smarter or more talented than another.
Jealousy isn’t a good thing; fortunately, it’s possible to grad ually deal with it. This requires initiative(主动性)and full support from the person facing the problem as well as his loved ones. The person himself shouldn’t deny the existence of such a problem. As to sibling jealousy, parents are advised to deal with this problem in a positive way as soon as it is detected, else sibling rivalry can have some serious effects and cause a lifelong rift and tension between siblings. When dealing with workplace jealousy, you should be professional, approach your seniors and demand a recheck of your assessment. Nowadays, organizations are being forced to apply scientific methods of evaluation systems so as to create fairness in assessment. The methods applied have helped justify the assessment results and reduce jealousy between colleagues.
So why get annoyed about your fate and get jealous of others? Love yourself and be assured about your

So Close, Yet So Far
Where am I? What am I doing? If you’re one of my 500 friends online, you’ll always be the first to know. My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance, so I’m constantly posting updates on social media—whether I’m having a coffee, on my way to school, watching TV… even when I’m in the shower. I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with online.
I live in a university dorm with a couple of great roommates. Yet the truth of the matter is: I feel lonely. A few days ago, I went out for a dinner get-together with some friends. My best friend left the table for 30 minutes because he had to take a call. Some spent the dinner bent over their phones, texting friends online but ignoring the one who sat right in front of them. And the extraordinary thing is no one thoug ht this was rude; it’s just how life is nowadays.
