It’s no secret that Auckland (the largest city in New Zealand) is a diverse city full of different cultures and new research has shown exactly how it and the rest of the country are changing.
More than 200 ethnic (民族的) groups are recorded as living here and Auckland is considered to have a wider variety of cultural groups than London or Sydney, with 40 percent of its population made up of different ethnicities.
The changing make-up of the country’s population is featured in the latest NZGeographic magazine, which focuses on ethnic diversity, age, wealth and attitudes, drawn from the latest census (人口普查) figures.
Massey University social sciences research director Professor Paul Spoonley said Auckland’s multiculturalism today is way beyond what experts believed likely a few years ago.
Asian communities,in particular,in New Zealand have almost doubled since ,when 6.6 percent of the Kiwi people (New Zealanders) were Asian. The proportion (比例) in Auckland was 14.6
percent.By ,18.9 percent of the citizens in the city were Asian and today 23 percent identify themselves as Asian.
Nationally, the census showed 11.8 percent of the population was Asian-and that figure was increasing.
“The figures are higher than I would have thought a few years back,” Mr.Spoonley said.“And the healthcare system is attracting Asian workers.”
The article also showed that Kiwis had overall become more accepting of migrant communities and particularly of Asian peoples. That had been a hugely noticeable change,Mr.Spoonley said.
An Asian community leader Kai Luey in Auckland said there were a number of things that attracted Asians to New Zealand and particularly to Auckland.“The environment is clean, there’s fresh air and there’s safety of food...There’s a good education system here in New Zealand...”
New Zealand was also considered to be a much safer place than many other countries, such as America,Canada and Australia.

As computers become more popular in China,Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper.Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more?In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students.Almost all their assignments(作业) and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to
modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I’m writing with a pen,I find I often can’t remember how to write a character,though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don’t feel t his is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently.Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said,“Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion.Through one’s handwriting, people can g et to know one’s thinking and personality.Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的),and in universities some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
12.What does the underlined expression “taking stock in” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Getting bored with.
B.Getting dependent on.
C.Becoming crazy about.

D.Because computers have become a trend and fashion in China.
14.Which of the following statements is NOT true of the advantages of handwriting?

A wealthy master once owned a large farm with a big house, where he employed two servants to work in the fields.
One servant was very loyal to his master. He placed the command of his master in his heart and obeyed it while the other servant only heard the words of his master, but went on his own way.

would be satisfied with him.But the other servant, who loved himself more than his master, enjoyed the pleasure of the world. He thought that his master would never know what he was doing. He used his freedom for his own sake.He just ignore d his master’s command and followed his own will.
Many years passed, but still the master did not come back. The first servant went on working hard in the fields for a good harvest year after year while the other servant wandered around the world.
