My Friend's Healthy Eating
My best friend Sara is really good at eating healthy foods. I think she has the healthiest diet of anyone in our class! Sara's mom is super into nutrition and fitness, so she has taught Sara a lot about making good food choices from a young age.
For breakfast, Sara usually has something like oatmeal with fresh blueberries and a tiny drizzle of honey. Sometimes she'll have whole grain toast with natural peanut butter spread on it. Her mom always makes sure she has a fruit too, like an apple or banana. Sara says the fiber and nutrients help her feel full and focused for school in the morning.
Sara packs her own lunch to bring to school most days. In her lunchbox, you'll typically find a whole wheat sandwich with lean turkey and lots of veggie toppings like lettuce, tomatoes and avocado. She'll also have carrot sticks, cucumber slices or another raw veggie. For a treat, her mom lets her have a small
bag of nuts or trail mix. And she always has a big reusable bottle of water to drink throughout the day.

Or they'll do baked salmon with a huge side of roasted brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and green beans. Sara says her favorite meal is veggie fajitas with whole wheat tortillas, black beans, salsa and avocado. Her mom makes sure they eat a rainbow of colored fruits and vegetables to get all the important vitamins and minerals.
Of course, Sara does have some treats like most kids! But her mom is careful about giving her healthy versions without a lot of extra sugar and fat. Things like frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruit, baked sweet potato fries, or homemade trail mixes with dark chocolate chips. And Sara doesn't drink soda or juice very
often - mostly just water, milk and the occasional small glass of 100% fruit juice.
I really admire how dedicated Sara is to eating nutritious foods. Sure, I love junk food as much as the next kid. But seeing Sara make such wise choices helps motivate me to eat better too.
I can definitely feel the difference in my energy levels and how I focus at school on the days I have a diet more like Sara's.
I hope someday I can be as disciplined as Sara when it comes to nutrition! Of course, her mom deserves a lot of credit for teaching her healthy habits and modeling that lifestyle at home. But Sara has to make those choices for herself when she's at school or other people's houses. It's not always easy to be the kid passing on chips and cookies.
Sometimes Sara will invite me over for a sleepover on the weekends. Even then, her mom sticks to her healthy meal routines for us. In the mornings, we'll have veggie omelets and whole wheat pancakes instead of sugary cereals. For snacks, there are fresh fruits, nuts and air-popped popcorn - never chips or candy. I'll admit, at first it was an adjustment not having all my usual junk food staples around. But after awhile, I found myself feeling so much better and having more energy to play!
Overall, I just have so much respect for Sara's commitment to healthy eating at our age. She's really taught me how much nutrition can impact your body and mind in positive ways. While I'm not nearly as disciplined, I do try to make more nutritious choices thanks to Sara's amazing example. Having her as a friend motivates me to start building healthy habits too. Who knows, maybe by high school I'll be able to cook up veggie-packed meals as delicious as Sara's!

My Best Friend's Healthy Eating Habits
My best friend Jack is really good at eating healthy foods. He never eats junk food or candy or soda. Instead, he chooses nutritious foods that give him lots of energy and help his body grow big and strong!
Jack's Breakfast
Every morning for breakfast, Jack has a big bowl of oatmeal with blueberries, walnuts, and just a tiny drizzle of maple syrup. His mom says the oatmeal has fiber to keep him feeling full until lunchtime. The blueberries have antioxidants that are good for his brain. And the walnuts provide healthy fats and protein to give him endurance for the long school day ahead.
Jack also drinks a big glass of orange juice in the morning. His dad says the vitamin C in orange juice boosts his immune system so he doesn't get sick as often. I think orange juice is too sour, but Jack seems to love it!
Jack's Lunch
For lunch, Jack's mom packs him a super healthy lunch box. It always has a sandwich on whole wheat bread with lean turkey, avocado, tomato, and lettuce. Jack says avocados are a great source of healthy monounsaturated fats.
His lunch also contains carrot sticks, cucumber slices, an apple, and a hard-boiled egg. Jack tells me the egg gives him protein to grow big muscles. I don't know about that, but I do know Jack is getting way more vegetables and fruits than I am at lunchtime!
Lastly, Jack's lunch has a bottle of water and a small box of raisins for dessert. He says raisins give him a sweet treat but in a much healthier way than cookies or cake.
Jack's Dinner
For dinner, Jack's family always has a lean protein like grilled chicken or baked salmon. They eat it with a big side of steamed
broccoli or sauteed spinach and perhaps some brown rice or a baked sweet potato.
Jack says the vegetables give him fiber, vitamins, and minerals to repair his body and stay healthy. The protein builds and repairs his muscles after playing sports or exercising. And the whole grains provide him with long-lasting energy instead of a short sugar rush.
Jack's parents don't keep junk food or sugary beverages in the house. So, Jack isn't even tempted to eat unhealthy snacks after school or before bedtime. He just has a cup of warm herbal tea if he wants a little something extra.
Jack's Exercise
In addition to eating nutritious foods, Jack also exercises regularly to take care of his body. After school each day, he plays outside for at least an hour - riding his bike, shooting hoops, kicking a soccer ball around, or just running around with the neighbors.
On weekends, Jack's family goes for long hikes in the woods or swims laps at the community pool. I've noticed Jack has gotten really strong and muscular from all that activity!
Occasional Treats
Now, Jack isn't perfect - nobody is! Sometimes he does have a small treat like a scoop of ice cream or a handful of chips. But it's just a little taste, not an entire bag or pint. His parents believe that totally restricting unhealthy foods makes kids crave them even more.
Jack says it's all about balance and moderation. If you eat healthy 90% of the time, that 10% splurge won't ruin your good habits. I really admire how disciplined and knowledgeable Jack is about nutrition for a sixth grader!
Conclusion
My friend Jack really is an inspiration when it comes to healthy eating. He understands which foods are most nutritious and makes smart choices, even when his parents aren't watching. I've learned so much from him about fueling my body properly.
I hope I can develop habits as good as Jack's. Then maybe I'll be as strong, energetic, and healthy as he is! Jack motivates me to make better decisions at mealtimes. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein - here I come!

Hi, my name is Tommy and I'm in 6th grade. Today I want to tell you all about my best friend Jake and the really cool healthy eating habits he has. Jake is awesome and I admire him a lot for being so disciplined about eating right. I'll try my best to explain it all in a way that's easy to understand.
Jake has been my neighbor and closest pal ever since we were little kids. We go to the same school and are in the same class. Jake's mom is a nutritionist, which means she's an expert on healthy food and diets. She taught Jake from a very young age about the importance of making good food choices.

My Friend's Healthy Eating
My best friend Sarah is really into healthy eating. At first, I thought it was kind of weird, but now I think it's actually pretty cool! Sarah has taught me a lot about why it's important to eat good foods and I've started making some healthier choices too.
Sarah's mom is really into nutrition and she's taught Sarah a ton about it since she was little. Sarah says her mom is always
talking about getting enough vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein from the foods they eat. I had no idea there was so much to think about with food!
One of the biggest things Sarah does is eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Like, a LOT! Her lunchbox is always packed with carrot sticks, apple slices, berries, and whatever veggie is in season. In the cafeteria, she piles her tray high with salad and veggie sides. Sarah says the vitamins and minerals in plants are super important for growing kids.
She's also really picky about what kinds of meats and dairy she eats. Sarah's family buys organic chicken, eggs, and milk whenever they can. She told me the animals aren't given any antibiotics or hormones, which I guess is better for you. They also buy grass-fed beef and pork because Sarah's mom says it has more good fats.
Speaking of fats, Sarah is always going on about "healthy fats" from foods like avocados, nuts, olive oil and fish. She basically won't touch anything with "trans fats" and she reads every single nutrition label to check. Sarah claims trans fats can actually be really bad for your heart. Who knew fat could be healthy OR unhealthy?
Sarah drinks a ton of water throughout the day too. She has this big reusable bottle that she carries everywhere and refills it like five times. She says being hydrated gives you more energy and helps your body work better. I usually just drink juice or soda when I'm thirsty, but maybe I should start drinking more water.
One thing I really respect about Sarah is that she's not judgy about what other people eat. She just does her own healthy thing without nagging me or our other friends about our eating habits. Although sometimes I do feel a little guilty polishing off a bag of chips in front of her!
If we go out for pizza or burgers, Sarah will still eat some, but she's really careful about portion sizes. Her mom taught her about balancing healthy and unhealthy foods, and not going overboard on the treats. I could probably learn a thing or two about portion control from her!
Sarah has also gotten me into trying new healthy foods I'd never eat before. Last year for her birthday she had a kombucha drink which is some kind of fermented tea. It actually tasted kind of good! And sometimes she packs things like edamame, hummus and veggie wraps for her lunch, which seem weird at first but aren't too bad.
I think the biggest impact Sarah's healthy eating has had on me is making me more aware of what I'm putting into my body. Instead of just mindlessly snacking on chips and cookies after school, I've started grabbing an apple or some nuts if I'm hungry.
I find I have more energy when I eat better, and I feel better about myself too.
Don't get me wrong, I still love my fair share of pizza, fries, ice cream and all the other good unhealthy stuff! But thanks to Sarah, I've realized you can have treats in moderation while still making healthy choices most of the time. Eating nutritious foods gives you energy, helps you think better, and keeps you feeling good.
My mom has even started making some of the healthy recipes that Sarah's mom shared with her. We've had black bean burgers, quinoa bowls, and all sorts of new foods I can't even pronounce! I still prefer classic kid foods like mac and cheese, but I have to admit, some of the healthy meals are pretty tasty.
Overall, I'm really glad to have a friend like Sarah who is so passionate and knowledgeable about nutrition. Her healthy habits have definitely rubbed off on me, in a good way. I know once I get to middle school and high school, it will be tempting to survive off vending machine food and fast food runs. But
Sarah has inspired me to keep making my health a priority, no matter how crazy life gets.

My Friend's Healthy Eating
Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I'm going to tell you all about my best friend Sarah and how she eats really healthy foods. Sarah is super smart and gets great grades, and I think eating nutritious meals helps her do well in school.
First off, let me describe Sarah's typical breakfast. Every morning without fail, her mom makes her a big bowl of steel-cut oatmeal. Steel-cut oats are the best kind because they're made from whole grain oats that haven't been processed as much. The oats are mixed with fat-free milk, sliced bananas or berries, a spoonful of honey, and some cinnamon sprinkled on top. Oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate that gives you energy that
lasts for a long time. The fruit adds vitamin C, fiber, and natural sweetness. The milk has calcium and protein for strong bones and muscles.
For lunch, Sarah's mom usually packs her a healthy sandwich on whole wheat bread, a piece of fruit like an apple or orange, some carrot or celery sticks, and a hard-boiled egg or small handful of nuts. I try to eat as healthy as Sarah does, but it's not always easy because my parents don't cook as much. I do always drink water instead of soda though, and I eat the nutritious lunches and snacks my mom packs me every day. At home, I try to have fruits and veggies instead of chips and cookies after school.
Eating healthy gives you so much energy and makes you feel amazing! It's also really good for your mind and body as you're growing. So instead, Sarah's family tries to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like chicken and fish, and healthy fats like avocados, nuts and olive oil. They avoid processed foods with a lot of sugar, salt and bad fats. At home, they cook most of their meals themselves using fresh ingredients.

She says the occasional treat tastes good, but she feels kind of sluggish and gross if she has too many sweets or fatty foods.
Sarah is a really good athlete and plays soccer, basketball and runs track. She says eating a diet full of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean protein gives her the energy and strength she needs to perform her best in sports. She's noticed that when she's eaten too much junk, she just doesn't have as much endurance or get as restful of a sleep.
I've started to try and eat a little bit better myself after seeing how Sarah's healthy diet makes her feel. But I've started drinking more water instead of soda, eating fruits and veggies with meals, and choosing whole grain breads and snacks more often.
Sarah has helped educate me on why it's better to eat an apple instead of a bag of chips for a snack. The apple has fiber, natural sugars and vitamins to give you lasting energy, while the chips just have empty calories from fat and refined carbs that won't keep you full for long.
I'm not sure I'll ever be as devoted of a healthy eater as Sarah is. But I can definitely appreciate how fueling your body with lots of good nutrients pays off in how you look, feel and perform compared to eating a lot of junk food. Seeing her commitment to her diet while still allowing herself treats in moderation is a good balanced approach.
Sarah's healthy habits have really rubbed off on me and I'm trying to make better choices, even if I still really enjoy typical kid foods sometimes too. Her diet is something I admire and would recommend other kids try to follow as a good example of how to develop healthy eating patterns at a young age.
