Three Modern Services
When you're working a full-time job, studying or on the hunt for work, life can feel exhausting. The good news is that modern technology has made life easier in many ways, and with the following services, you'll find you have more time and energy for the things that matter.
Meal kit delivery services
Meal kit delivery services are one of the most underestimated innovations of the 21st century. How they work is simple. At the beginning you choose how many people need to eat in your household. Then, what your dietary requirements are, and any other preferences. Finally, you get to choose which meal kits will be delivered to your door.
No matter your diet, you can have an appropriate meal kit delivered. For example, check out these low carb meal delivery options. The kit comes complete with all the ingredients you need, already prepared. All you have to do is to follow the simple recipe to put them together and pop your meal in the oven.
With meal kit delivery, you don’t have to worry about cooking or spending money on takeout. Your trips to the grocery store will become easier and you'll waste less money and food.
Taskrabbit
One of the most frustrating aspects of having a place you call your own is that you have to take care of the maintenance(维修). Even if you are renting, there are certain tasks that your landlord will expect you to see to, whether a leaky tap or a problematic electrical appliance.
1
For this, Taskrabbit connects you with freelancers who are willing to take on just about any task for you. You can hire someone to take care of your leaky tap rather than spending your own time and energy doing it. You're giving someone work while enjoying your time off.
Postmates
Finally, one of the most convenient and useful services is, of course, Postmates. With Postmates, you can get just about anything delivered or deliver something yourself. You can get someone to do your groceries for you –simply make a list of what you need and choose whether the shopper should call you if something is out or if they can decide on replacements themselves.
You can also use it for takeout, to send or receive documents, and any other delivery needs you have.
We live in an age of convenience, and we should take advantage of it. Start using the above services and you'll see your stress levels drop.
1.What will people first do to enjoy Meal kit delivery services?
A.To check out some options.
B.To pop your meal in the oven.
C.To confirm the exact number of people.
D.To follow the simple recipe to put them together.

In fifth grade, on a merry New York City day, my classmates spread across our raggedy classroom carpet. Our teacher had us practicing holiday songs for the upcoming winter show, and with holiday seasonal passion we sang. When we came to one of the Hanukkah (a Jewish festival) songs, a few classmates and I got up and started dancing. We flew around the classroom laughing, our movements becoming irregular as the song progressed. Then one boy stood up and said something along the lines of, “Stop! You’re making fun of Jewish people!”
Our student-teacher stopped the song. The boy looked at us angrily as the student-teacher began to lecture us on our behavior. How we were being disrespectful to the boy’s culture — how the dancing was wrong. I was surprised at the outburst and, as a Jewish person myself, did not understand why the boy was offended, or why I was in trouble.
I was embarrassed and made to feel disrespected my own culture.
At the beginning of middle school, with the Hanukkah song incident still fresh in my mind, I began to interact more with my Jewish heritage(血统). I started going to Hebrew school. I carefully listened to prayers and committed them to memory. The legitimacy(正统) of my Jewish heritage was questioned by my peers, especially around the Jewish holidays. They would ask if I was “really Jewish,” as if there was a standard set of requiremen ts I needed to meet. I didn’t have my Bat Mitzvah(犹太成人礼), so that meant I couldn’t be truly Jewish, they said. I asked myself if the accusations were true. It felt like I need to prove my Jewish-ness in some way. I began looking for ways to connect with and represent my Judaism.
When I walked into a store in December, I noticed the abundance of Christmas items, and lack of Hanukkah pieces. Maybe there would be a menorah(烛台) in storefronts, or a few dreidels(陀螺) and chocolate gold coins, if I was lucky. Instead of feeling left out or ignored, I started to make a game out of it. In high school, I would walk the streets of the city and peer into store windows, marking down all the Hanukkah related things I discovered.
4. Why did the class sing the songs according to paragraph1?
A. To prepare for the coming performance.
B.To make the angry boy happy.
C.To celebrate a traditional Jewish festival.
D. To respond to the happy dancers.
5. What did the author experience during her middle school?
A. racial discrimination.
B. identity question.
3
C. culture attack.
D. criminal charges.
6. How did the author do to prove she’s a true Jew?
A. She opened a store to sell Hanukkah items.
B. She searched for the things related to her own culture.
C. She advocated her own culture and made it known to more.
D. She requested to have a bat mitzvah in front of her classmates.

Being stuck behind crowds of slow walkers when you're in a hurry is one of the most annoying things. But now, Lakeside Shopping Centre in Es-sex, one of the UK's largest shopping malls, has introduced its very own fast lane for shoppers in a hurry, aiming to help impatient shoppers avoid slow walkers and the anger that goes with them.
The Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex has introduced a 720-foot " fast lane reserved for fast walkers only, just in time for the festive rush. The centre's management team said: "The lane will help the shoppers who know
where they want to go quickly and don't want to get caught in be-hind unhurried shoppers at the busiest time of the year.”
The fast lane was introduced after a MasterCard survey found that 80 percent of consumers found slow walkers their biggest annoyance while shopping. The research also found that the average walking speed slowed down by 21percent during the festive shopping period, as most shoppers spent more time window shopping during this period.
Gary Mortimer, an expert from the Queensland University of Technology, said he wasn't surprised by the promotion about the launch of the fast lane, and thought the concept would appeal to shoppers all over the world. Crowded parking lots and busy hopping centres tend to be two of the biggest complaints of shoppers over the festive season," he said. “I think the fast lanes are a new approach. However, I suspect it will be a bit like fast lanes on the highway, so it might end up being more trouble than its worth.”
The MasterCard survey also identified the four most common types of shoppers. They include “Skaters" who try and make their way through crowds politely, “Dodgers” who move down the paths to avoid slow walkers, “Bulldozers who push their way through crowds, and “Tutters” who express their frustrations to slow walkers.

According to a study published in the pre-print website bioRxiv, a team of Israeli scientists recorded tomato and tobacco plants producing sound frequencies which humans cannot hear in stressful situations—such as when they experienced a lack of water or their stems were cut. The team identified the sounds with microphones placed around 10 centimeters (around four inches)away from the plants, though the scientists say the noises could potentially be heard several feet away by some mammals and insects, such as mice.
Plants exposed to drought stress have been shown to experience cavitation (空化现象)— a process where air bubbles (气泡)form, expand and explode inside tissue that transports water. These explosions produce sound, but they have only ever been recorded using devices directly connected to the plants. The latest study, meanwhile, is the first to identify plants making sounds which can be detected over a distance. And the researchers say that cavitation could potentially be the source of these sounds.
The team detected the tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour on average when they were exposed to drought conditions, while the tobacco plants produced 11. When the stems of the plants were cut, the tomato plants made 25 sounds an hour on average and the tobacco plants produced 15. As a comparison. unstressed plants made less than one sound hour on average, according to the study.
The team say that while they only tested tomato and tobacco. It’s possible that other plants could also produce sounds, adding that the latest findings could have ;implications for agriculture. "Plant sound emissions could offer a novel way for monitoring crops' water state— a question of vital importance in agriculture," the authors wrote in
the study. "more Precise irrigation can save up to 50 percent of the water consumption and increase the output, with dramatic economic implications.''
"According to Anne Visscher from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. in the U. K, the idea that the sounds could be used in precision agriculture is, practical' though she urges caution regarding the Israeli team's suggestion that other animals could hear the sounds at a distance," New Scientist reported.
12. What does the Israeli scientists find about plants?
A. Stressed plants tend to lack water.
B. The stressed plants can make sounds.
C. Some plants can understand humans’ sounds.
D. Some mammals and insects can communicate with plants.
13. What can we learn about cavitation?
A. It may lead to plants experiencing drought.
B. It may contribute to the plants’ sounds.
C. It is determined by the number of air bubbles.
D. It was identified and recorded for the first time.
14. How many sounds does the tomato plant make on average when cut?
A. 35
B. 11
C. 25
D. 15

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.16.. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation(动力) once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.17..
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 18.. Complete a few tasks and reward
yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 19.. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal.
Others at home may finally follow your example and perform their own tasks. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
20.. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
C.To fight family laziness, set an example.
D.Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.
E. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
F. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
G. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

Dear Chris,
Time flies! I have been missing you all. Words are beyond my gratefulness for what you and your family did for me. I sincerely invite you to visit my country over the Spring Festival, the most important festival in China, one of whose traditions is family reunion, so if you come then you can meet me friendly and hospitable family and relatives. Another tradition is visiting friends or travelling. New clothes and lucky money are the tradition that kids like best.

There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part - time holiday - season job in a video. store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.
Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

One possible version:
As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked over to her daughter. “Mind some advice?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “of course not.” I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. Cherish her an d cherish every single moment you can stay with her,” I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she's gone, it's these little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I know.” Having finished saying this, I noticed the elderly woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
Together they made their way toward the store's exit. Then the daughter glanced over her elderly mother. And slowly, almost unwillingly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed aff ection around her mothers’ shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd. Tears filled my eyes when I watched them disappearing in the crowd.
