A
Ladybug celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary this month. For twenty-five years, the magazine has been trying to reflect the world of young children — and make it a little broader — through stories, poetry, art, and various activities.
Each issue of this magazine encourages kids to take a closer look at the people and places around them. Ladybug invites children to bring their whole selves — their acute ear for language and keen eye for illustrations(插图), as well as their wonderful sense of play and great power of imagination — when they sit down and start to put their heart into reading.
The significance of Ladybug’s long history is clearest to me, a man who is in charge of the edition of this magazine, when I talk to parents of children who have grown up. They often respond with surprise: "Ladybug? With the poems, and the stories, and the crafts to cut out, what will you do next? We used to read that magazine when the kids were little." And then there is a moment of silence, as if the father is searching for a particular poem, or the mother is remembering the feel of a restless child’s head when it finally settled against her shoulder. It is a great pleasure to contr ibute to a magazine that families have put in their memory.
Some anniversaries are formal, but at Ladybug, we approached the September issue as if it had been a birthday party. It is full of lively company, jokes, music, stories and poems that celebrate special days and growing up.
In this spirit, we offer one of our favorite birthday stories, "Big Bear and Skinny Rabbit", from an issue that came out a few years ago. It is part of a series about two friends who couldn’t be more different in tem perament(气质), yet more perfect for one another. 21.What does the author probably do according to the passage?
A.A businessman.
B.An editor.
C.A professor.
D.An artist.
22.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Many children fall asleep with the stories in Ladybug being read.
B. More contents are expected to be contained in Ladybug.
C. Most parents worry about the development of Ladybug.
D. Many parents can remember Ladybug with affection.
23.What will probably be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. A story published before.
B. The new issue of Ladybug.
C. A collection of poems.
D. An introduction of Ladybug’s birthday
B
Her attractive lips seemed to speak words of kindness, while her eyes appeared to seek (寻找)out the good in people. “You have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” She used to say.
It was for this rare charm and inner beauty that British movie star Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) was named the most naturally beautiful woman of all time in June, 2004.“Her skin looks fresh in all her films and her warm and lively personality really shines through,” said one beauty expert.
Life was never easy for Hepburn. Shortly after her parents’ painful divorce when she was nine, she found herself in the Netherlands at the start of World War II. Hepburn watched helplessly as several of her relatives were killed. She survived by eating tulip bulbs and carried secret messages for the resistance in her ballet shoes.
She dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer but was told she was too tall and not talented enough to be a success. Hepburn then turned to musicals and spent most of her time as a chorus girl (舞女). She had some small movie roles but it was not until Roman Holiday (1953) that she became a star. With her good manners and delicate figure, she was perfect in the role of a European princess. She took the Best Actress Oscar for her performance.
In 1988 Hepburn began her most important role—as a Goodwill Ambassador(大使) for UNICEF(United Nations Children’s Fund). She traveled to the poorest places, doing her best to provide care and create awareness of the difficult situations in which some children live.
When Hepburn passed away, a message displayed at her funeral read, “In losing Audrey,
the world not only lost a movie star, we lost a princess, an angel, a person who inspired us all and whose selfless and loving examples shall always be remembered.”

had passed since her parents’ divorce? _________

B. To think highly of Audrey Hepburn’s whole life.
C. To tell readers the message displayed at Audrey Hepburn’s funeral.
D. To say goodbye to Audrey Hepburn.
26. Which of the following best describes Audrey Hepburn’s life? _______
A. Difficult and lucky.
B. Miserable and smooth.
C. Hard and successful.
D. Easy and smooth.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?_______
A. Beauty Is Not Just Skin Deep.
B. Beauty Is Just Skin Deep.
C. Beauty Never Stays Forever.
D. A World-famous Beauty expert

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the candy they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something amazing has happened. A survey found that those who was four year old had enough self-control to hold out generally and grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset in time of difficulties and inflexible.
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wond er about most, like the question why
some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant (有抵抗力的) person.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together, how one’s ability handles stress, for instance, affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
28. At the beginning of the text the author mention the experiment is intended to .
A. make the readers amused
B. prove the scientist’s wisdom
C. introduce the topic of the text
D. show us how to do an IQ test
29. The experiment with the four-year-olds shows us that .
A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
C. em otional intelligence won’t show up until adolescence
D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence
30. The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means .
A. positive
B. negative
C. inpatient
D. friendly
31. From the passage we learn that .
A. EQ does not have any connection with IQ
B. The higher a person’s IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is
C. Brain theory is able to explain what we wonder about most
D. Scientists haven’t discovered the way EQ and IQ work together
D
A few years ago, a company called Space Marketing came up with a plan to send a mile–long
advertisement into space. To ad vertising agencies (机构), it would have been “a dream come true”. However, advertising standards agencies fi nally decided not to allow Space Marketing to go ahead with their plans and they were forced to give them up.
Space may indeed be the final place for advertisers, because on Earth we are already surrounded by advertising wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Apart from the obvious adverts that we see every day on TV, and in newspapers and magazines, there is a whole ‘other world’ of advertising messages for our attention .There are ads that we see on the side of the bus we catch to work, for example. And what about the logos (商标) we see on the clothing of the people we walk past in the streets?
Most of the time, we are probably not even aware of (意识到的) these less obvious advertising methods, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t work. Take ‘product pl acement’, for example. You are in a cinema, watching the latest Hollywood movie. Look carefully at the make of car your favorite actor is driving. And what about his watch? Can you see what brand it is? Chances are, you can, and the company that owns the brand is likely to have paid thousands for it to appear in the film.
So, whether Space Marketing finally succeeds in sending ads into space or not is perhaps less impo rtant than it might seem. This would not change a thing. Our everyday lives are already strongly influenced by advertising whether we realize it or not.
32. What happened to the plan of sending an ad into space?
A. It came to nothing.
B. It was a dream come true.
C. It had to wait a few years before it was carried out.
D. It was supported by the advertising standards agencies.
33. How does the author explain the “other world” of advertising messages?
A. By showing research findings
B. By explaining research findings
C. By giving instructions
D. By using examples
34. As a form of advertising , product placement .
A. costs a little
B. doesn’t work
C. is less obvious than TV ads
D. mainly appears in Hollywood movies
35. What does the author suggest at the end of the text?
A. We live in a world of advertising.
B. We’ve changed a lot because of advertising.
C. Space Marketing leads in the advertising industry.
D. Space ads will mark the beginning of a new world.

Four Ways to Beat Summer Weight Gain
When we think of summer, most of us think of outdoor fun. So it seems like we should naturally lose weight over the summer. In reality, summer isn’t all beach voll eyball and water sports. Therefore, we can gain weight easily in the summer. ___________36 Here are four ways to beat summer weight gain.
________37 When we don’t have a plan, it’s easy to spend summer moving from the couch to the computer, with regular stops at the fridge. Avoid this by aiming for a specific goal, like volunteering, mastering a new skill, or working at a job. Just be sure to plan for some downtime so you can relax a little!
Stay busy. When we’re bored, it’s easy to fall into a trap of do ing nothing and then feeling low on energy. In addition to helping you avoid the cookie jar, filling your days with stuff to do can give you a sense of accomplishment. _________38 Beat the heat. Don’t let summer heat put your exercise plans on hold. _________39 If a gym isn’t your scene, try bowling or an indoor climbing wall. If you love being outdoors, try joining a local pool or move a regular run or soccer game to early morning or evening.
__________40 With school out, we lose our daily routines. If you don’t have a specific job or an activity to get up for, it’s easy to sleep late, watch too much TV, and snack more than usual. Make sure your summer days have some structure — like getting up at the same time each day.
A. Stick to a schedule.
B. Get going with goals.
C. Relax by walking outside.
D. Move your workout indoors.
E. We usually stay at home in the summer.
F. That’s especially true if a dream summer job falls through.
G. However, it’s easy to avoid this problem if we know what to look out for.

1. I am a student from Xinhua Middle School. I would lik e to be a spokesman for animals to try my best to protect them.
I like animals very much and I have a loving heart for animals, especially polar bears. So I want to speak for polar bears. Nowadays, the balance of nature is being destroyed and the weather is getting warmer and warmer. What's worse, some people kill polar bears for their own sake. As a consequence, the number of polar bear is becoming smaller and smaller. So, in order to increase people's awareness of protecting polar bears, I apply for the spokesman for polar bears sincerely.
I do hope I can be chosen as a spokesman for polar bears.
Yours,
Lihua
2. I am a student from Xinhua Middle school in Xiamen, china. Knowing you are searching for Aniaml Spokesman, I am very excited. I have been caring for animals since young, especially dogs, because they are clever and always are people’s most loyal friends. They can help people to catch bad people and look after people’s children or houses. But for no reason, nowaday, more and more dogs become homeless, which does great harm to them and has a bad effect on our life, so I want to participate in this activity to appeal to people to care about dogs.
I would appreciate it if you can give me a chance to speak for dogs.
Look forward to your earliest reply!
3. I’m a student from Xinhua Middle Scholl in Xiamen, China, and I’m very much interested in speaking for animals. You know I’m warm-hearted and have always been caring for animals in my life.
I would like to speak for dogs not only because dogs are my favorite animals, but also they are not treated properly. Devoted though dogs are to us human beings, we seldom think about what they need and care about. We just order them to do this or that, but hardly are we aware what we can do for them. In my opinion, it is high time we did something for our closest animal friends and lived a harmonious life with them.
Strongly hoping to be accepted to speak for animals.

W: I’ve been looking for her for almost an hour now.
M: And where did you last see her?
W: We were just shopping in the vegetable section. I turned around and she was gone. M: Don’t worry. Everything is going to be okay.
W: What should I do?
M: Stay right at the front of the store, in case she comes looking for you. We’ll start looking for her now.

W: Hi, Bob. Did you talk to all of the witnesses to the car accident?
M: Yes. An old lady was standing on the street corner when the accident happened. She said that it was the red car’s fault. It was driving very fast and then quickly stopped when the traffic light changed.
W: What did the kids say?
M: The kids were playing in their front yard, and they said that they didn’t see anything. W: Did the neighbors see anything?
M: One neighbor, Mr. Jones, said that he saw a dog run out into the street in front of the car.
W: Hmm. No one else mentioned a dog. Did you talk to Mr. Bates? He is the man who was selling newspapers on the street corner.
M: Oh, yeah. He said it was the blue car’s fault.
W: Really?
M: Yeah. He said that the man in the blue car wasn’t paying attention. When the red car stopped, he didn’t notice until it was too late. He was the one who hit the red car. W: Wow! Did they all see the same accident? They all remember something different. Text 10
Mr. Smith owned a small supermarket. Several months ago, a few big chain stores opened in town. They sold absolutely everything, and their prices were very low. Many small shops closed down, but Mr. Smith’s small supermarket did not. One of the chain stores’ owners was very curious. One day, he dropped into Mr. Smith’s supermarket and saw a middle-aged woman buying fruit. He asked her why she didn’t go shopping in the big chain stores. Then the woman told him a story.
Three years ago, her son Tommy was in elementary school. One day when she was in the supermarket, Tommy rushed in and begged her to buy him a pair of sports shoes. She really wanted to buy her son the pair of shoes, but the money in her pocket was barely enough for a meal. Seeing no hope in his mother’s eyes, Tommy ran away. Suddenly, she felt someone pat her on the shoulder. She turned around and saw Mr. Smith, the owner of the supermarket, holding the pair of shoes that her son wanted. “Take them,” he said with a smile. She shook her head. “I don’t have enough money,” she said. “Your son can’t wait,” the owner said, “but I can. Take them, and pay me later.”。
