The grocerystore might not be your favorite place to visit when you're at home, but is it ever fun when you're in another country? Honestly speaking, they're one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travelers head toward clothing stores, libraries, coffee shops or galleries.
The greatest beauty of the grocery store –– whether it's a supermarket or a tiny shop –– is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook their own meals. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the bread, and oh, the chocolate...always the chocolate!
Being the environmental nerd(呆子)I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect people's attitudes towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaveseverything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.
People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teenaged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy(松脆的)mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled “spicy” would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.
It's interesting then to come home and look at one's own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.
4. According to the author, what is the key benefit of visiting foreign grocery stores?
A. Learning to cook foreign dishes.
B. Making friends with local people.
C. Buying cheaper food and souvenirs.
D. Knowing local people and the country.
5. What does the author show by mentioning some countries in paragraph 3?
A. People's special lifestyles.
B. People's shopping habits.
C. People's environmental awareness.
D. People's packaging methods.
6. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Sri Lankans know a lot about food.
B. Grocery stores are good social places.
C. Grocery stores vary in different countries.
D. Sri Lankans like to give strangers suggestions.
7. Which of the following shows the structure of text? (P: paragraph)
A. B.
C. D.
C
It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible (看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname "toilet bowl" . Now the Philippines' Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.
The cleanup started on 27 January, when 5, 000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons
(公吨) of garbage, marking the beginning of a nation-wide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.
During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn- based Bounties Network collectedthree tons of garbage from Manila Bay aver two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency (数字货币) based on the Ethereum system.
For the mostly non-bank -using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It's one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity's waste.
There are signs that this recycling-for-digital payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver -based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country's largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.
That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country's contribution to ocean waste. A Wall Street Journal study in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.
8. Why did people call Manila Bay beach“toilet bowl” ?
A. It looked like a huge bowl.
B. There were plenty of toilets.
C. It was covered by rubbish.
D. People loved the toilets here.
9. What does the underlined phrase“descended on”in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Completely depended on.
B. Suddenly arrived at.
C. Occasionally decreased to.
D. Gradually disappeared from.
10. What made poor communities willing to fight against waste?
A. The benefits to their homeland.
B. The desire to make a difference.
C. The chance to escape ocean pollution.
D. The experience with a digital currency.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Online system helps endocean pollution.
B. Manila Bay beach is suddenly removed.
C. Plastic Bank is powerful in recycling waste.
D. Philippines make a great amount of waste.

If you travel inAthens, against popular belief, I would highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your secondday. As attractive as it is to head straight to the most famous building in the city, there are several reasons why you should hold off until later.Sunriseis the best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in anew citywaking up at6 a.m.? On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site inAthensless important in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it on your first day.
We got to the southeast gate at 7:30, half an hour before it opened at 8. When the gate opened, we rushed to the hill. Our plan paid off because we had the whole complex to ourselves for five minutes. In this age of overtourism, getting to the greatness of the Acropolis with nobody else around felt special and excited.
The Acropolis is the name given to the complex on top of the hill, and it’s made up of several buildings. There’s theTempleofAthena Nike, the Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, the Legendary Olive Tree of the Pandroseion, the Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion... and on your way down, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Something that sounds boring but isn’t is theAcropolisMuseum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there. As someone who is a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been, and made myself go inside. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis, and it was interesting to check them out.
Head toSyntagma Squarenext to watch the changing of the guard. This takes place every hour on the hour, so try to time your visit perfectly. The guards wear fun clothes and make for interesting photos.
12. The author suggests visiting the Acropolis on the second day so that ___________.
A. it can save visitors a lot of time
B. it can save visitors from getting up early
C. it can make for a better travel experience
D. it can give visitors a better understanding ofAthens
13. How did the author feel when he ran to the top of the hill?
A. Bored.
B. Worried.
C. Relaxed.
D. Amazed.
14. With what may the author agree about theAcropolisMuseum?
A. It is so great that it should be visited last.
B. It is enjoyable and worth visiting.
C. It wastes a lot of time.
D. It should be avoided.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To provide some advice on visiting the Acropolis.
B. To introduce the history of the Acropolis.
C. To call on people to protect historic sites.
D. To encourage people to travel around.
