Around the globe, sometimes in the most unexpected places, a handful of towns and villages stand out from the crowd, drawing the world's attention and attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Bo-Kaap, South Africa
The ancestors of the residents of Bo-Kaap are mostly from Africa, Java, Indonesia, Malaysia and other parts of Asia. These diverse cultures contributed much to the interesting architecture of the town and the houses are repainted in rainbow colours each year, with neighbours conferring to avoid a clash.

One of the most biodiverse areas in Europe, many nature lovers are attracted to the island but Tobermory is perhaps best known for the brightly painted houses and buildings that line the waterfront.

Now the town's new Municipal Stadium, built for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, is covered with glass fibre mesh coated in Teflon, which can have any colour projected on it to reflect the mood of the event.
Patidad, India
In 2009, a small village called Patidad in Gujarat, western India, underwent a radical colour overhaul when a prominent local family decided absolutely everything should be painted pink. My first memory of academic anxiety was when I was in second grade. I had nightmares about not putting my homework folder in my backpack, nightmares about forgetting to do worksheets. In high school, test anxiety ruled my world. Exams gave me extreme panic attacks. I lived my life between exams, pausing everything in my life for tests.
When the pandemic(大流行病)forced school to move online, school became more flexible and felt a lot less serious. Homework and tests were structured differently, and classes seemed less formal. Things began to gently change for me—tests of different form helped me calm my nerves. Being able to take assessments from my own room, completely alone helped comfort my anxiety. The powerful damaging force of the pandemic pushed me see the things that mattered to me more than school, grades, or feelings of success: my health and the health of my loved ones, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The pandemic suddenly changed so much of the world we know and the way we interact with it. It forced me to realize we should not—and cannot—wait to push for our own happiness. We should not wait to seek help, but work on ourselves, and better ourselves. Realizing this better version of ourselves is not a dream. With work, we can change. A few weeks ago, I walked into a midterm test thinking mostly about what I was going to order at Starbucks when I finished. No panic attacks, no extreme tiredness. The night before the test, I watched TV before bed.
This took a lot of work energy, and time to get to. It also certainly still isn't my "normal"—anxiety is still a huge factor in my life, one that I think will never entirely leave me. And though pieces of it certainly are, ingrown in my heart, it flows gently out, and stops to weaken me so seriously as it did before.
24. What was the main reason for the author's anxiety?
A. Daily life.
B. School tasks.
C. Poor memory.
D. Extra exams.
25. What made the author realize the truly significant things?
A. Tests of different forms.
B. The relief of his anxiety.
C. The change to online classes.
D. The bad impact of the pandemic.
26. How can we achieve our better version according to the passage?
A. Relaxing ourselves.
B. Waiting for help patiently.
C. Interacting with the world.
D. Pursuing happiness actively.
27. Which is the author's present situation?
A. He is still scared of exams.
B. He leads a life without anxiety.
C. Being relaxed in study is his normal.
D. Being anxious can't affect him as before.

More than 90% of Great Barrier Reef coral(大堡礁珊瑚)surveyed this year was bleached(漂白)the fourth time in seven years, Australian government scientists said. Bleaching in 2016, 2017 and 2020 damaged two-thirds of the coral in the reef. The environmental group Greenpeace Australia Pacific said in a statement the extent of the latest bleaching was "another complaint of the Morrison government which has failed to protect the reef and worsened the problem through its support of fossil fuels(化石燃料).”
Scientists hope most of the coral in the reef off Australia's eastern coast will recover from the current event, said David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the authority. "The early indications are that the death won't be very high, "Wachenfeld said Wednesday. "We are hoping that we will see most of the bleaching coral recover. We will probably end up with an event more like 2020. In 2020, there was mass bleaching, but there were low deaths. However, the bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 led to quite high levels of coral mortality.
Coral is made up of tiny animals called polyps(息肉)that are fed by microscopic seaweed that live inside the reefs and are sensitive to changes in water temperatures. The seaweed provides the reefs with their colors and produce sugars that provide the coral with most of its nutrients. Rising ocean temperatures turn the chemicals that the seaweed produce into poison. The coral turns white as it effectively spits the poisonous seaweed out. So, coral bleaches as a heat stress response. Heat stress beyond a few weeks can lead the coral to die of hunger.
"This is heartbreaking. Our Barrier Reef really is in very serious trouble indeed. "Simon Bradshaw, a researcher at the Climate Council, said, "the reef's survival depended on global cutting down heat giving out within the decade."
28. What can we infer from paragraphl?
A. The use of fossil fuels reduced this bleaching.
B. The latest bleaching is more serious than before.
C. Bleaching occurred four times in the recent decade.
D. The Morrison government permits the use of fossil fuels.
29. What does the underlined word "mortality" mean?
A. Growth rate.
B. Death rate.
C. Survival rate. ·
D. Recovery rate.
30. Which of the following can best define coral bleaching?
A. The reaction of coral to heat stress.
B. The result of coral getting polyps.
C. The process of coral turning poisonous.
D. The procedures of providing sugars.
31. How can we help the reef according to Bradshaw?
A. By stopping the use of fossil fuels.
B. By protecting the seaweed in the ocean.
C. By avoiding the ocean temperatures rising.
D. By reducing the amount of heat around the world.
D
During the five-day Labor Day holiday that began on April 30, tourist attractions that offered ancient Chinese, or guofeng, experiences attracted large crowds, some members of whom wore traditional clothing and makeup to enhance the authenticity of their experiences.
Qujiang New District in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, charmed tourists with a new attraction themed on TV serial The Longest Day in Chang'an. It offers visitors a chance to "travel back in time" and experience a day in the life of people living in the Tang Dynasty(618-907). Xi'an, known as Chang'an back then, was the imperial(皇帝的)capital.
The World Rural Tourist Town in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, staged a cultural festival with a silk and Song Dynasty(960-1279)theme. During the first three days of the holiday, the place received nearly 30,000 visits, putting it into a Tik-Tok list of the 10 most sought—after Huzhou attractions.
The Jizhou Kiln scenic area in Jiangxi province held a tourism festival with a Song Dynasty theme. Tourists, wearing period costumes and makeup, tried their hand at the ancient Chinese game of touhu—throwing arrows into wine pitchers—and sampled yonghe tofu, one of the top 10 Jiangxi dishes.
COVID-19 has accelerated changes in consumers, who are increasingly pursuing comfortable and safe tourism products that benefit both the environment and people's health. For tourism businesses, it's important to highlight the cultural elements of tourism products by drawing inspiration from China's traditional culture.
To create a more impressive experience, staff members dressed in hanfu would join the crowd and interact with the tourists by, for example, handing them flower seeds, the staff member said, adding that services such as hanfu rental and traditional makeup design are available in the park.
Hotels are also tapping the guofeng craze to feed the growing passion for traditional Chinese culture. A guofeng hotel of Chinese firm Rezen provides replica costumes from online games based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West, which the guests can try on for photos.
32. Why did Xi'an attract so many tourists?
A. For its beautiful scenery.
B. For its delicious food.
C. For its themed tourist draw.
D. For its geographical location.
33. What do Huzhou and Jizhou Kiln have in common?
A. They share the same theme.
B. They are listed top on Tik-Tok.
C. They feature local snacks.
D. They offer traditional costumes.
34. What impresses tourists more according to Paragraph 6?
A. Tourism products.
B. Tang poems.
C. Traditional costumes.
D. Online games.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Guofeng Varies from Place to Place

39
There's a lot to learn besides vocabulary words. You need to be able to pronounce words correctly. But how do you do that? Speaking a different language involves using different face muscles than normal. By watching native speakers talk, you'll pick up on the details for how to move your lips and mouth when saying certain words.
Study things that interest you
Textbooks usually pick boring situations to teach a foreign language. Instead, you should choose to study language around topics that interest you. If you like movies, try watching films in the target language with subtitles (字幕). 40 . By keeping it interesting, you'll be more motivated to study.

Ways to Beat Hair Loss
It can be upsetting to find you are losing your hair, and it can cause some people to lose confidence in themselves. It's always wise to learn the reason and come up 56 a solution.
Did you know that it could be the hair products you 57 (use)now that are contributing to your hair loss? Although you'll be using many of these 58 (item)to keep your hair looking good, they might actually be causing you 59 (lose)your hair. So perhaps your losing hair is due to the chemicals used to make these products, 60 become trapped in the hair. When this happens, hair can't grow, and the hair will fall out. The best thing to do is to use 61 (nature)products. The fewer chemicals you put on your hair, 62 less likely it will be to fall out.
Heat is another disaster for hair health, and although you might think of hairdryers and straighteners when you think of how much heat 63 (apply)to your hair, it could be something else that's causing the damage. The hotter the water in your shower, the more damage you are doing to your hair. Not only that, but the heat can dry out your hair, 64 (make)it very crisp. Remember, your hairdryer and other tools are also a problem, so use 65 (they)as little as possible.

Seven Dollars and a Bag of Cookies
Forty years seems like a long time to remember the name of an acquaintance. I have forgotten the name of an old lady who was a customer on my paper route when I was a twelve-year-old boy, back in 1959. Yet it seems like just yesterday that she gave me a lesson in forgiveness that I can only hope to pass on to someone else someday. I really understood the importance of honesty, which could make you admit your mistake bravely.
I was a newspaper boy then. I could earn a little money by sending paper to my neighbors. I was busy in the morning while I could enjoy the leisure time during the afternoon. On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady's house from a hidden place in her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof's edge and shot out into the yard like comets falling from the sky.
I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. However, the stone was too smooth. It slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window in the old lady's house. At the sound of broken glass, we took off from the old lady's yard faster than any of our missiles that had flown off her roof. I was too scared of getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window. A few days later, however, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to feel comfortable in her presence.

Yesterday I attended an exhibition themed on China's achievements in space exploration in the City Museum, which was a really worthwhile experience.
The exhibition featured amazing images and videos showing the long development of China's space exploration. Meanwhile, there were a wide variety of objects on display, such as rockets and spacesuits. However, what impressed me most was the Space Lab, where visitors could try spacewalk in almost zero gravity.
Not only did I feel proud of China's rapid progress in space exploration, but I was also inspired to study hard to make a contribution to my country one day.
读后续写
Paragraph 1
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money. Three weeks later I had the seven dollars that I calculated would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost of repairing it. I waited until dark, went to the old lady's house, and put the envelope through the letter slot in her door. Then, I couldn't wait for the freedom of, once again, looking straight into the old lady's eyes.(88 words)
Paragraph 2
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper and was able to return the warm smile that I was receiving from her. She thanked me for the paper and said, “Here, I have something for you." It was a bag of cookies. I thanked her and ate the cookies as I continued on my route. After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was surprised. Inside was the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I'm proud of you."(70 words)
