2. 年纪大的人更看重健康。

3. 我30多岁,我认为......
正确答案:Which Is More Important, Health or Wealth? Like elsewhere, in China there is controversy over the issue: which is more important, health or wealth? Different people with different experiences hold different opinions. And individuals in different social statues give different answers. Young people argue that health is more important than wealth; for it seems that they are in a bad need of money. “No money, no happiness” is likely to be a widely accepted thought among juveniles. In their eyes, nothing but wealth is important. In their lives, they believe money makes the world go. Everything can be obtained, including health only if they are wealthy. Their goal of life is to get more wealth at the expense of their health. Senior people always care more for heath than wealth because they are apt to think that by being in good health, they are able to enjoy their wealth they have accumulated over the decades, or live their comfortable lives even if they are not well off enough. They learn from their experiences that health provides the basis for both happiness and wealth. They claim that health is the basis of everything to people. If they lose health, they will lose all, including wealth. In other words, so long as they are healthy, they are most likely to accumulate wealth. One’s ultimate aim of life is not to gain wealth. Only healthy people are happy indeed. I’m in my late thirties.
I think that either of the opinions goes to the extreme. Health and wealth do not contradict each other, and yet they may agree with one another. Whether your priority is given to wealth or health, your opinion depends largely on either your age or your financial background. A healthy person can be wealthy and a wealthy one be healthy. Both health and wealth are equally important.
Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions attached to the passage. For questions 1-4, mark:Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN)if the information is not given in the passage.
Passage One At Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, he was known as Matthew Kaye, an earnest social studies teacher shepherding his ninth-and tenth-grade students across the panorama of global history. But out of school-on the professional wrestling circuit- he was Matt Striker, a muscleman known for a move called the lung blower. His double life may have body-slammed ins teaching career. According to city investigators, Mr. Kaye, 31, falsely called in sick for 11 days in December and February when he was actually on the wrestling tour. Faced with disciplinary action, Mr. Kaye resigned in April, but yesterday be said that he hoped to get ins job back “There are people out there who touch children inappropriately who are still allowed to work, “Mr. Kaye said in a telephone interview. “The only thing I did was I put in sick days instead of personal days, because I didn’t know them was a difference.”But Richard J. Condon, the special commissioner of investigation for the city schools, said it was not that simple. Teachers get 10 sick days a year and only 3 of those can he used for personal business. Investigators from Mr. Condon’s office said a woman who identified herself as Mr. Kaye’s mother called Cardozo in December and said that he was out because of a family emergency. Mr. Kaye later told an assistant principal at the school flat his sister was ill. Then Mr. Kaye was absent in February, when wrestling Web sites said that he appeared on die television show “Smack Down!” in a match against Kurt Angle. Investigators sought to interview Mr. Kaye, but his lawyer canceled the session and Mr. Kaye resigned. Mr. Kaye eventually provided two notes from doctors for his absences. But investigators questioned their validity and urged the State Health Department’s Office of Professional Medical Conduct to investigate and take action. Passage Two The evidence of dietary protection against cancer is strongest and most consistent for diets high in vegetables and fruits, according to an earlier report by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). The WCRF panel of experts concluded that the daily consumption of 400 grains or more of a variety of vegetables and fruits could, irrespective of other diet and lifestyle patterns, decrease overall cancer incidence by at least 20 per cent, according to the Asia Food Information Centre. There is convincing evidence that diets high in vegetables and fruits protect against cancers of the mouth and pharynx, oesophagus, lung, stomach, rectum, larynx, pancreas, breast and bladder. High dietary fiber is also associated with lower risk of some cancers, especially bowel cancer. The recommended daily intake of dietary fiber is 25-30 grams for a healthy adult. This can only be achieved by incorporating high fiber foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds into eating patterns every day and/or using a bran supplement. Adequate fruit and vegetable intake has a protective effect, helping ward off chronic diseases while helping to elevate resistance to infections disease and reduce nutritional deficiencies. Fruit and vegetables actively promote health by providing bodies with essential vitamins, nutrients, fiber and a myriad of phytochemicals (植物化学物质) which acts as antioxidants (抗氧化剂in the body. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that accelerate the process of cell decay and increase the chances of cells becoming cancerous. Four hundred grams of fruits and vegetables per person per day (excluding potatoes and other starchy tubers) for the prevention of chronic diseases
translates to approximately “5-a-day” that is, eating five or more servings of fruit and vegetables every day. One serving is roughly the amount that fits into the palm of a cupped hand. Obviously, those of smaller body size will need to consume less than 400grams daily, so the 5-a-day cupped handful works as a guideline or children, young people and their parents, as well as smaller adults.

I don’t play of course, but I go to quilt a lot of concerts and I go to the theater occasionally and act a bit myself. I’m in the local Germanic society. I read quilt a lot and I’ve done a bit of photography. Also, I’ve hitchhiked to Europe once.Interviewer: Very interesting. Mr. Pitt. Now let’s talk about the management trainee scheme. 听力原文:Man: Do you know the thing that’s always struck me as odd about opinion polls?Woman: What’s that?.Man: The percentages. Like recently there was a survey about what people thought about traffic, and petrol prices and public car parks. In some car parks it now costs something like £5 to park a car for half an hour.Woman: Yeah, but I don’t see what you are getting at?Man: What I mean is the percentages m the result. So there might be 70% of people who complained about high petrol prices, and 60% who want to see the traffic reduced, and 65% who think car park charges are too high. Does that mean that there are 35% who actually think the charges are OK and would even be prepared to pay more, and another 30% who think petrol prices are OK? I mean that’s absurd. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think they’ re too high.Woman: Well, actually I think we should pay more.Man: Come on, you’re joking.Woman: No, I’m serious. I think we should pay more fur petrol, even twice as much maybe, and certainly far more for inner city ear parks.Man: But why?Woman: More taxes should be charged on petrol, I think, to discourage people from using cars, and a kind of graded charging system for car parks depending on
how far they are from the city center.Man: What do you mean?Woman: Well, If you park your car quite far from the city center then you pay a nominal amount as a kind of reward for not polluting the city canter. Well, the closer you get to the center, the more you are penalized. Prices in the center should be totally prohibitive. I mean with an efficient bus or tram service there’s no excuse for using cars.Man: Yeah, but you can’t penalize people who don’t use their car to go into town. I mean if you doubled the price of petrol, it would cost people a fortune to go anywhere, even on short trips, and especially on holidays.Woman: Don’t use your ear. Use a min.Man: But what about lorries? I mean they use a lot of petrol to transport goods from one place to another.Woman: So what’s to stop these goods being transported by train or even via canal?Man: Well, anyway, I still can’t believe that 30% of those people who, said car park charges were OK. All think the same as you.Woman: Well, maybe that’s where you were wrong. Just think about what I’ve said and you’ll realize that perhaps its not so stupid as it sounds.

Green had been to his studio and, with the help of Hanley’s wife, had selected the pictures for the exhibition. He had decorated the hall and had personally supervised the hanging of the pictures. Most important of all, he had seen to it that all the invitations went to the right people: critics, reporters and, of course, people with money to spend on paintings. “There’s no doubt about it,”Green assured him during the exhibition,” everything has gone off very well. “Hanley was pleased, but remained shyly in the background, unwilling to meet his public. “One picture caught special attention. “Green told him. He consulted his catalogue. “Number thirty-seven. It did not have a name, so your wife and I decided to call it’Midnight’-- because all the colors are very dark.”Hanley, unable to recognize the picture from this description, was puzzled, but he said nothing. When everyone had left, he slipped across to see for himself the painting which had attracted so much attention. He laughed so much that Green came across to see what the matter was. 听力原文:TUV ALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea. Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice, a historic city in Italy, best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50 cm by 2050.
A century ago, St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year. Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands. Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming. The average global temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years. The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

听力原文:At present, human beings have used many devices to measure time. Perhaps, the sundial was, one of the earliest and simplest devices. A sundial can measure the movement of the sun across the sky each day. The sundial worked very well only when the sun was shining. So other ways of measuring the passing of time were invented at that time. One device was the hourglass. It used a thin stream of falling sand to measure time. By the 1700s, people had already developed mechanical clocks and watches. And today many of our clocks and watches are electronic. So we have devices to mark the passing of time. But what time is it now? Clocks in different parts of the world do not show the same time at the same time. As international communications and travel grew, it became clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world. In 1884, an international conference divided the world into 24 time areas or zones. Each zone represents one hour. The astronomical observation in Greenwich, England, was chosen as the starting point for the time zone. Most people have no trouble in agreeing that time moves forward. Some scientists believe there is one reason why time moves forward. It is clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world with scientific law: the second law of thermodynamics. The law says disorder increases with time.

Part IV Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) (25 minutes)
Section ADirections: In this section, there is a short passage with 5 questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Preparing young people to be citizens requires us to embrace civic learning as a core propose of education. Last month, thousands of Americans honored the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in the National King Day of Service.
Dr. King dream of equality, justice, and unity took wing through his pledge to serve others. He believed that service is the hallmark of a full life. He also knew that service is a great equalizer in which people from all backgrounds come together to address important public issues. Inspired by King’s vision, participants in the national day of service came together to teach literacy skills, rehabilitate housing, and serve meals to the hungry and homebound, to name just a few examples. For many, particularly young people, the King’s holiday was their first opportunity to experience the power of service: working for the common good to make the world a better place to live. We encourage all Americans to build on the National King Day of Service by engaging in the public work of their communities and participating in our democratic system. Educating our youths for citizenship is our most important public work. We must purposefully nurture the value of service and civic engagement in each generation if our country is to be caring and just. This fundamental ideal depends on a well-informed citizenry that understands the importance of engagement in civic and political life. Education leaders should work to ensure that the King Day of Service is not limited to a one-day shot of well-intentioned volunteerism. To let that happen would minimize a valuable learning opportunity and misconstrue the importance of King’s legacy. We urge instead that school administrators, community organization, teachers, parents, and students advocate within their districts and schools for three action items that would: Make service an ongoing part of the instructional program and not merely a series of isolated experiences; Integrate service projects into academic study, especially the civics curriculum, so that students explore the underlying social and policy context of the community issues they seek to address through community involvement; and redefine service-learning specifically, and civic education more generally, as a fundamental objective of teaching and learning and a significant part of district reform agendas.
