He wanted to tell his mother one more time just how much he loved her.Lighten UpThese days, it seems that almost all of us have something to worry about.People are frustrated and uptight about almost everything -- being five minutes late, having someone else show up five minutes late, being stuck in traffic, witnessing someone look at us wrong or say something wrong, paying bills, waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake -- you name it, we all become upset over it.The root cause for being upset is our unwillingness to accept life as being different, in any way, from our expectations. Very simply, we want things to be a certain way but they are not a certain way.Life is simply as it is. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best: "Our limited perspective, our hopes and fears become our measure of life, and when circumstances do not fit our ideas, they become our difficulties." We spend our lives wanting things, people and events to be just as we want them to be -- and when they are not, we fight and we suffer.How do we reduce this suffering?The first step in recovering from a bad mood is to admit that you have a problem. You have to want to change, to become more easygoing. You have to see that your own state of heart is largely of your own creation -- it is composed of the way you set up your life and the way you react to it.The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration level. Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn't, you are upset and you suffer. On the other hand, when you let go of your expectations, when you accept life as it is, you are free. To hold on is to be serious and uptight. To let go is to lighten up.A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expectations. Don't expect people to be friendly. When they're not, you won't be surprised or bothered. If they are, you will be delighted. Don't expect your day to be problem free. Instead, as problems come up, remind yourself, "Ah, another hurdle to overcome."As you approach your day in this manner you will notice how beautiful life can be. Rather than fighting against life, you will be dancing with it. Pretty soon, with practice, you will lighten up your entire life. And when you lighten up, life is a lot more fun.Lesson 03Lying to a Loved OneWhat are the benefits of lying to a loved one? Whether we like it or not, our relationships are held together, not only by telling the truth, but also by knowing how and when to lie. And if the truth be told, our close relationships could not work without some degree of deception. No one want to hear everything, and telling the right lie at the right time is just as important as telling the truth when it comes to love and romance.The most painful and hurtful thing you can do to someone usually involves telling the truth. Typically, the best way to hurt someone is by being completely honest -- tell a romantic partner something that he or she does not want to hear. For instance, would any one want to hear the following:You are not as attractive as you used to be.I sometimes think about someone else during sex.I sometimes wonder if we should be together.I have a crush on one of our friends.And we are happier and feel close to our romantic partners when we do not have to acknowledge such painful, hurtful truths. If the people do not see each other regularly, the relationship is likely to die.-- Different foundations for friendshipsChinese friends share "things in common": a task, a class, the hometown. Friendships are formed by people who work or go to school together. You may or may not like theperson, but if he or she can do something for you because of his position or job, you can be friends.But in North America, business and friendship are kept separate. The friendships are usually tied to specific activities. A person may have work friends and leisure activity friends. Also friends tend to have similar financial circumstances, because friendship in the west is based on equality. Friends should exchange similar activities and give similar things to each other. If one can afford to treat the other to a meal at an expensive restaurant and the other does not have enough money to do the same, it will cause problems in the relationship.-- Westerns expect friends to be independent.Western people prefer people to be independent, so they do not feel comfortable in a relationship in which one person is giving more and the other is dependent on what is giving. The idea is to help the friend to think out the problem and discover the solution he or she really wants and then to support the solution. Chinese friends give each other more concrete help. A Chinese will use personal connections to help a friend get something hard to obtain such as a job, or an appointment with a good doctor. Chinese friends give each other money and might help each other out financially over a long time.-- Chinese usually expect more from their friends.In the West, you can certainly ask friend to do something with you, but you recognize that your friend may say no, if he/she gives you a reason. You would not expect a friend to drop everything to respond to a non-urgent need such as shopping. Nor would you expect a friend to recognize and respond to your wishes without stating them.A friend in China is someone who offers help without waiting to be asked. There are few limits to what you can expect from a friend. You can feel free to tell your friend what he/she can or should do to help or please you.Lesson 06The concept of EQWe have been conditioned to believe that IQ is the best measure of human potential. In the past 10 years, however, researchers have found that this isn't necessarily the case -- that in fact, your emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) might be a greater predictor of success. We learned to feel before we learned to think. The strong physical reactions we have when we feel anger, happiness, love, surprise, disgust and sadness, for example, illustrate the idea that emotions went before intelligence.IQ is essential for learning and mental development. EQ is a person's ability to understand his or her own emotions and the emotions of others and to act appropriately based on this understanding, and it is more important for happiness and success. We have all known people who did not complete college, but who have become very successful in business. We call them street smart. Before we can think about what to do, we need to look more closely at what children might actually mean when they say, "I'm bored."They might be saying, "I haven't been getting enough sleep," in which case high stimulating entertainment is not available. A more complex message behind boredom might be: "I now have time to dwell on anxieties or fears that are usually pushed aside by interesting activities."It may be that children need time to hide themselves in nothingness in order to unlock their imaginations. We know that one way kids work out inner problems is through imaginative play. They actually re-create themselves through fantasy, make believe games or artistic expression. They can play out emotions that might be too overwhelming, e.g. by pretending to be their favorite superhero and fighting their worst fear. They develop resourcefulness by replaying difficult real life scenarios and developing solutions to problems. Or they might just play in a way that enables them to recognize and accept their feelings.Engaging in imagination engages a part of the brain that may not be used in school. Research on brain activity shows that what we know as imagination is generated in the right side of the brain where "open-ended ideation" takes place. In contrast, the left side of the brain is though thought to be "linear and logical." Performance in school, for example, tends to require intensive left side activity. Thus, the right brain provides an escape from life in the "fast lane" left side, and a rest from the barrage of external stimuli children are constantly processing in their daily lives.Imagination provides many possibilities for play, and some children just seem to be born blessed with good imaginations. However, "Use your imagination" is not a realistic requirement. How do we encourage and cultivate this way of being?Lesson 09Your Gaze Makes You IrresistibleWhen a woman walks into a crowded room, what her eyes do in the first moments may determine how attractive she is to any man meeting her gaze. If she turns her eyes deliberately toward a particular man, he immediately rates her as more likeable and physically attractive new research shows. If she glances at him but then turns her eyes away, that same man will rate her as much as less sexy. Our impressions ofothers are influenced by these simple, nonverbal clues -- and we are not objective in our judgment. That could mean that a man rates a woman as less attractive when she averts her gaze because he's feeling rejected.The psychologists believe that the No.1 thing you can do to establish a relationship is simply looking at the other person, especially when listening to him. In fact, there's evidence that when someone looks at us, it's physiologically arousing, and there are these brain regions that get more engaged. Gaze can simply make you focus more on the person and what he might be saying or doing. And in situations where romance is a possibility, it makes the mind race and the heart beat a bit faster.In a recent study, researchers had 43 college undergraduates (24 women, 19 men) sit before a computer screen and view a series of faces of fashion models. The images were computer-enhanced, so that they appeared to slowly turn their gaze toward, or away from, the viewer. In the first experiment, the researcher asked the participants to rate the physical attractiveness of the models on their screen as they turned toward or away from them. Male participants rated models who averted their gaze as less beautiful, while models who turned their eyes toward them got much higher marks. But for female participants, ratings of attractiveness for the models were not affected by direction of gaze.It is interesting to know why people are judged more harshly when their eyes communicate disinterest. You could say "Oh, she doesn't like me because I'm not good-looking, I'm too short." This type of reaction is called an internal attribution, with the viewer suspecting that the averted gaze reflects badly on the viewer. Or he could make a external attribution, which blames the other person, instead. In this "sour grapes" mood, them man interprets the woman's averted gaze as meaning "she is not a person I'd want to get to know, because she's hostile."What is sure is that gaze matters. The most charming individuals use eye contact to their advantage. They set their gaze on you, averting it only occasionally and at proper intervals, because holding a gaze too long can also signal hostility. The result? They make you feel like you're the most important thing to them at that particular moment. Lesson 10The Story of Father's DayFather's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards!Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart was a Civil War veteran. His wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a farm. it was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in towns and cities across America other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. Everyone has got a story of his father's love. Here is one told by Bert Clomp us. ... After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of fresh orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with a note saying, "Drink your juice." Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned my Mom: "Why doesn't Dad love me?" Mom asked, "Who said he doesn't love you?" "Well, he never tells me," I complained. "He never tells me either," she said, smiling. "But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That's how your father tells he loves us. Do you understand?" I nodded slowly. I understand in my head, but not in my heart.Many years later, after drinking the juice Dad prepared for me, I walked over and hugged him and said, "I love you, Dad." From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs. Then one morning I hugged him extra hard, and said what I'd always wanted to. "You've told others you love me, but Inever heard it from you." Dad looked uncomfortable. He seemed about to speak, then he shook his head. "Tell me!" I shouted. "All right! I love you!" Dad finally blurted. In that instant something occurred that I had never seen before: His eyes glistened, then overflowed.I stood silent. Finally, after all these years, my heart joined my head in understanding. My father loved me so much that just saying so made him weep, which was something he never did in front of family. Mom had been right. Everyday Dad had told me how he loved me by what he did and what he gave...Lesson 11Confronting StressStress is defined as the body's response to any demand made upon it. Long ago, stress was a matter of survival. Increased pulse, breathing, and alertness kept our ancestors ready for dangers and prepared them to "run or fight".Today stress result from negative and positive events. A job promotion or graduation from college can be a positive stressful event. A job loss, financial troubles, or a death in the family can be a negative stressful event. Despite the different times, our body's reaction remains the same as the caveman's.Some of the effects that we experience from stress can include: depression, or feeling really sad about nothing in particular; anxiety, or a fear that makes you feel tense or nervous; anger, or a feeling of hostility towards persons or events; panic, or a feeling of losing control. Symptoms can include panic, sweating, dizziness, breathlessness, and palpitations. Stress can lower our immune systems and make our bodies more susceptible to infections, colds, and flu.Stress will always be a part of your life. It is important to recognize what gives you stress and learn how to control your responses to those thing that cause stress.Here is a list of the top ten stress-busters that you can use to manage your own stress: 1. Try not to "self-medicate" with diet formulas, alcohol, or over-the-counter medicines such as sleeping pills. Covering up a problem can make the stress even worse.2. Do something just for yourself. A trip to the hair salon, or having a massage can do wonders when you're under a lot of stress.3. Eat at least one hot meal a day. Good nutrition is important because it gives your body the fuel it needs to deal with daily stress.4. Share how you are feeling with someone you can trust and who will listen to you. There is an old saying that "A joy shared is doubled, and a sorrow shared is halved."5. Exercising at least three days per week for at least 30 minutes each time improves your fitness and your sense of well being.6. If you are a smoker, stop smoking and start breathing clean air. Smoking and stress are a dangerous combination.7. If you are a coffee or cola lover, cut down on these and other drinks that contain caffeine.8. Learn and use relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation, or other stress-relieving activities of interest to you9. Laughter is the best medicine. It is. Laughing releases chemicals in the brain that help promote a relaxation response. Rent a comedy from a video store. Share it with friends and laugh your stress away.10. Get regular physical exams. Your healthcare provider can spot health problems related to stress and can provide you with suggestions.Lesson 12Get Some Sleep?It's 2 a.m., and you've counted enough sheep to fill a paddock, but you still can't get the shut-eye you need. Do you 1) start counting goats; 2) get out of bed and read; or 3) take a sleeping pill? If you picked reading, your restless nights may soon be over. According to a report in a recent journal of the American Medical Association, adopting a few basic habits -- like limiting the amount of time you spend in bed -- works better than pills goats in controlling chronic insomnia.Almost everyone experiences a sleepless night or two at some point in their lives.
