The first Board meeting of the current Board took place in late December and I am happy to report that Executives were returned to their previous roles. For the benefit of all members, I will list the current Board of Directors as well as our Senior Management Team. That will be posted on the company’s website. One thing, is worth your attention, well, we have a new HR Manager Hannah Eddy. I believe that she will enhance our administration in the following hard days. The coming year presents both ongoing and new challenges to the Management team on a number of fronts. These challenges include the continued implementation by the government of legislation directly affecting the day-to-day operations of the club. Obviously the introduction of plastic glasses appears not far from the horizon and yet again community clubs are being lumped into the same basket as night clubs operating until the early morning hours. The implementation of a new driver’s license(Smart Card)and the issues that this will raise in relation to their use as a form of identification will need addressing. The final recommendations of the Productivity Commission from its inquiry into gambling and what impact these have if they are adopted. As I have raised previously the results of the Productivity Commission are the most eagerly awaited as they have the potential to change the way the Club operates as well as our continued support of the community in general. Our courtesy bus service began operating in early December and has proven to be very popular with members. The implementation of this service has not been without complaint. The major complaint has related to the area the service covers. All complaints have been recorded and a review of the operation of this service is being undertaken to determine where and how to operate this service in the most efficient way, although any solution that is implemented will not be able to meet the needs of every member. Our General Manager Tony and his assistant Steve have purchased 37 additional Gaming Machine licenses from another club and in the coming weeks will see the addition of new and updated product to the gaming floor. Whilst we have received approval for an additional 60 machines, these will not all be installed immediately. It is hoped the additional machines will meet the need during our busier periods. “The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.” Have a fantastic Easter everyone and we look forward to seeing you in the club.[pause]Now listen to the recording again.[pause]That is the end of Part One. You now have 20 seconds to check youranswers.[pause]You will hear a chairman delivering a report at an annual conference which will be allowed to read online. At last some students make the connection: drainpipe= water=floating. They pour water down the hole, and the ball floats to the top. This and many other e*periments suggest concreteways of increasing creativity in all of us. Questions 23 to 30.Interviews conducted by members of the ECE, (Economic Committee of Europe) with enterprises engaged in third-market cooperation have identified several areas in which problems occurred. Many of these problems are characteristic of the particular industrial sector in which the cooperation takes place and cannot be generalized to supply to other sectors. When vehicles and machinery made under cooperation arrangements are launched on new markets, substantial modifications may have to be made in basic features. Such changesmay be dictated by a lack of servicing facilities for the prescribed frequency of service for the standard model and an operating environment that is different form that prevailing in either of the partner's home markets. Since acceptance of the product in question by the client depends upon the manufacturer successfully satisfying his specifications, the partners must closely coordinatetheir ordering procedures in such a way that these changed specifications are communicated in time to the manufacturing plants. If the producing enterprise has a long lead time as a result of internal planning procedures, it may find it difficult to make the necessary changes in the standard model during the time available, to the detriment of its relations with clients in the third market. Clearly, this is an area in which effective managerial techniques can prevent such problems from arising.Rapid fluctuations in demand are characteristic of the market for many of the chemical products manufactured under east-west cooperation arrangement. In order to respond to such shifts in demand, the supplying enterprise must remain in close touch with the market, either directly or through its western partner, in order to adjust its production schedules to take these shifts into account. Otherwise it may find itself with large inventories of unsaleable products while its partner may be in the difficult position of hastening to find4nalternativemarket for the amounts no longer required by the target market. In the turnkey-plant sector, partner enterpriese often discover that they derive totally different results from using the same local subcontractors. According to several western plant contractors interviewed, while the eastern partner obtained complete satisfaction from local suppliers, the western partner found little cooperation, forthcoming long delivery delays, and other shortcomings. This difference usually arises in the case of developing countries in which the western firm has no experience and the eastern enterprise may have been active for many years. Obviously in such cases it is recommended that the western firm rely on its partner's established links with local suppliers instead of attempting to deal with them on its own.Consumer goods make under cooperation arrangements and supplied to third markets often pass through a period of poor buyer acceptance, which is due to inappropriate or insufficient packaging. Since many branded consumer goods are distinguished from one another at the point of sale mainly by their packages ,the key to the successful introduction of a new product in a third market is correct assessement of consumer preferences. This assessment can best be carried out in the market-place by using up-to-date techniques for measuring buyer response to package shape, colour and presentation. Which partner should be responsible for conducting such testing, and。

2021年商务英语考试BEC高级模拟练习题Is there any place in the world’s biggest and fastest-growing industry for someone starting up in business on their own? The answer, it seems, is a definite ‘yes’.__H__. As the holiday and tourist business is growing by at least 10 percent a year, the prospects for small independent travel agents with flexible markets and low overheads have never been so bright. No wonder next year will see a record number of independent start-ups – at least 10,000, according to one estimate. __9__. They will benefit from computer technology, which means they on longer need retail shops in order to operate as travel agents. At least 50 per cent of independent operators are already home-based, linked by computer to booking centers, ticket wholesalers and database services, which can cut prices by half, compared to the main travel agent chains. __10__. If they do, these dynamic independents BECome like mini tour operators, creating their own packages from other people’s holidays, rather than just selling a standard holiday out of a brochure for only 10 per cent commission. The biggest problem with running your own travel company can be to generate enough income to make it possible to apply for a license to sell air tickets direct. __11__. However, many independents are quite happy withthis system. The brokers are fully bonded and therefore your customers are well protected. At the same time, you can still get good rates of commission. Even part-time agents securing around ten bookings a month can earn around $1,000 a month. __12__.An even greater income than that is possible with the right kind of specialization. Business and sports travel are particularly lucrative. __13__. One way to get this kind of deal can be to approach companies in your area direct and offer to cater for their corporate and leisure travel needs. You may be able to improve on their existing deals, especially if they are currently dealing with one of the larger travel companies. __14__. In fact, your only problem may well turn out to be that you become so successful selling holidays you never have time to take one yourself!A Such big companies may have 75 per cent of the travel business, but there’s plenty left for the smaller operator, particularly if they specialize.B This could be five times as much if you make it your only job.C Their low overheads should mean they are able to undercut their competitors.D These will range from part-timers to full-time freelance travel brokers.E Otherwise you have to work through brokers and computerized distributors who all take their cut of the profit.F Even so, you need to ensure the staff have the right training.G For example, there are agents offering exotic conference locations or parachuting in the desert.H In fact, there’s never been a better time to try your luck in the travel trade.使用返指方法一:9,11,14。

The Negotiating TableYou can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by panies to negotiate on their??behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a petitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he sueeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will remend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it isthe safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or suessful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more fortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may notlike you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to bee their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not sueed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they havebecause people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this bees too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More mon is a corporate culture clash between panies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be petitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their pany’s situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel fortable.D try to make the other side like you18 Aording to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.Dconvince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the panies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly。

But there’s truth behind her enthusiasm.Take Carole Palmer, the group resources director. She joined Xerox in 1978 as a temp and has been in her present role for seven years. ‘Xerox has been good to me over the years,’ she says. ‘It has supported me through qualifications … and last year I took part in the vice-president incumbent program.’ Human resources is taken seriously at Xerox, Palmer says, and the company has a policy of promoting from within (which would explain Moloney’s amazement at her colleagues’ longevity). The company takes on only fifteen to twenty graduates each yearand Moloney was part of an intake who joined having already acquired a couple of years’ work experience. She started as a project manager for Xerox Global Services before moving into sales. Now her responsibility is to ‘grow and maintain customer relationships’.Moloney is based at the head office in Uxbridge. ‘It’s great in terms of working environment,’ she says. ‘We’ve just got a new provider in the canteen and … we have brainstorming rooms and breakout areas.’ Much of Moloney’s role is visiting clients, so she doesn’t have a permanent desk at head office. ‘I’m a hot-desker, which is good because you get to sit with different people in the hot-desk areas. And you’re given a place to store your things.’ Head office staff numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 people, Palmer says. The company has four other main offices in the UK. The nature of the organization, which encompasses sales and marketing, global services (the biggest division), developing markets, research and development and manufacturing, means that the opportunities at the company vary from service engineers to sales roles and consultants.Perks include a final-salary pension scheme and various discount schemes. The reward and recognition scheme is a little different, and rather nice: ‘Each manager has a budget every year to recognize and reward staff,’ Palmer says. ‘It can be in the form of a meal for two, or a bottle of wine. It can be up to £1,000. There’s the recognition, and then there’s putting money behind it.’ Moloney, however, likes the non-cash rewards. ‘Xerox takes care of all its staff but it also recognizes the peo ple who put in the added effort,’ she says. ‘It offers once-in-a-lifetime incentive trips, and recently I organized a sailing trip for my team.’The idea of working abroad with the company appeals to her, and she says that her career goal is to be part of the senior management team. They knowwhen and how to apply pressure and to take risks, when theyneed to display a more hands-off approach. The underlying 8% rise in operating profits is a more realistic gauge of the company*s true progress. However,Masterson*s impending merger with Bentley and Knight and its appointment of a new chief executive should mean that the company will be able to sustain growth for the foreseeable fut5ure. The share price has varied little during the course of the year and now stands at 6.75.BHotel GroupDuring the past year the Bowden Hotel Group has acquired 77 new properties, thus doubling in size . last week the group reported pre-tax profits of 88 million in the first six months of the year, ahead of expectations and helped by a strong performance from its London-based hotels and newly expanded US business. The company has been successful in choosing prime location for its buildings and has benefited from the buoyant demand for housing. Work has already begun on two sites in London, and the company is expected to sign a contract within the next month for building four large supermarkets in Scotland.EPottery ManufacturerMilton Dishes has been through a shake-up over the past year. The group, which has been cutting margins and improving marketing, may post a small profit this year. The many members of the Milton family, who between them own 58 per cent of the business, have been watching the share price rise steadily and several are looking to sell. The website is readily available to any consumer with a computer, and in this day and age, includes the majority of consumers throughout the world. There are no additional costs in reaching the expanded global markets. Since the Internet advertising extends to the global audience anytime, the chances of potential customers are more and hence the profit margin is also on the higher side. The bottom line is that the advantages of Internet advertising is much more than that of its traditional print forerunner, in lessened costs, availability, expanded consumer markets, and largely in the overall profit margin.
C
The best way to distinguish between advertising and marketing is to think of marketing as a pie, inside that pie you have slices of advertising, market research, media planning, public relations, product pricing, distribution, customer support, sales strategy, and community involvement. Advertising only equals one piece of the pie in the strategy. All of these elements must not only work independently but also work together towards the bigger goal. Marketing is a process that takes time and can involve hours of research for a marketing plan to be effective. Think of marketing as everything that an organisation does to facilitate an exchange between the company and consumers.

A
In terms of efficiency, not size, the advertising industry is only now starting to grow out of its century-long infancy, which might be called "the Wanamaker era" . It was John Wanamaker, a devoutly Christian merchant from Philadelphia, who in the 1870s not only invented department stores and price tags(to eliminate haggling, since everybody should be equal before God and price), but also became the first modern advertiser when he bought space in newspapers to promote his stores. He went about it in a Christian way, neither advertising on Sundays nor fibbing(thus minting the concept of "truth in advertising" ).
E
You write ads, based on relevant keywords for your business—these are displayed on search results pages and websites within that network. If someone types in a keyword/phrase relevant to your business and that matches your advert criteria, your ad will then show on the page. If someone clicks on your ad, you will be charged a ck value you set for that advert. Therefore, it is important to make the advert clear, so to avoid wasted clicks from people who misunderstood your message.
D
The advantages of print media enable you to send in the copy and have it displayed on the section you want within a few days. If it is a classified ad, this can be just 48 hours. The beauty of print media advertising is that you can be as creative as you wish, as long as you follow the guidelines set out by the newspaper. This will usually exclude nudity and strong sexual references in the copy and publishers will usually adhere to advertising standards legislation.
