China's Long History and Amazing TraditionsHave you ever wondered what life was like a really, really long time ago? I'm talking about thousands of years in the past! Well, let me tell you about the fascinating history and traditions of China - one of the oldest civilizations in the world.A Long, Long Time Ago...China's history stretches back over 5,000 years! Can you imagine that? Back then, people lived in simple villages and farmed the land to grow food like rice and veggies. They had cool inventions too, like the abacus for counting and silk for making fancy clothes. But things really took off during the dynasties - that's when China was ruled by powerful emperors and their families for hundreds of years at a time. The first big dynasty was the Qin, which united China into one huge kingdom in 221 BC. The emperor back then even had a gigantic army of terracotta warriors buried with him to protect him in the afterlife!Next came the Han dynasty from 206 BC to 220 AD. This was a golden age when paper, compasses, and even the first seismographs for detecting earthquakes were invented. The SilkRoad trade route also opened up, connecting China to faraway lands.Over the centuries, other dynasties like the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing ruled China too. They constructed epic palaces, temples, pagodas, and of course, the legendary Great Wall which stretches over 13,000 miles! Each dynasty brought new traditions, philosophies, art, and technologies that have had a lasting impact.Ancient Traditions Still Celebrated TodayOne of the coolest things about China is how its people have kept celebrating their age-old festivals and customs even in modern times. Let me tell you about some of my favorites:Chinese New Year is by far the biggest and most festive holiday. Families get together for reunion dinners with delicious foods like dumplings. They decorate with red lanterns, give out red envelopes with money, watch fireworks and dragon dances. It's honestly the best time of year! Then there's the Mid-Autumn Festival where we eat delicious mooncakes and admire the full harvest moon. The Qingming Festival in April honors our ancestors. And the DragonBoat Festival has super fun boat races and yummy zongzi rice dumplings!Speaking of food, Chinese cuisine is just incredible with so many flavors, cooking styles, and regional varieties. From mouthwatering Peking duck to hand-pulled noodles to tasty dim sum, it's a food lover's dream. I even heard people used to eat with chopsticks as early as 5,000 years ago!Chinese people also have fascinating traditions of traditional Chinese medicine, feng shui for harmonious living, calligraphy, martial arts like kung fu, and ancient classics like the I Ching. So much history and wisdom packed into the culture. An Inspiring Legacy of AchievementsOver thousands of years, the brilliant thinkers, inventors, and leaders of ancient China have given invaluable gifts to the modern world. Let me quickly name-drop a few:There was the great philosopher Confucius whose teachings emphasized morality, wisdom, and discipline. His ideas have influenced cultures across Asia for centuries. The mighty strategist Sun Tzu wrote the famous book "The Art of War" about military tactics that is still used today by business leaders and politicians. In science, there were pioneers like the mathematician Zu Chongzhi who calculated pi to the 7th decimal place and the astronomer Zhang Heng who accurately mapped out the stars.Speaking of stars, ancient Chinese astronomers were way ahead of their time. They could track the motions of the sun, moon and planets and even record solar eclipses! And we can't forget about the Four Great Inventions that changed the world - the compass for navigation, gunpowder for weapons, paper for writing and communication, and of course, printing using movable type well before Gutenberg!Modern China is Still AmazingWhile China has such an epic ancient history, it is still a fascinating country today combining that rich heritage with booming cities, cutting-edge technologies, and global influence.Just take a look at China's space program - they've landed rovers on the moon and Mars and even have plans for a permanent moon base. How cool is that? China is also leading in areas like artificial intelligence, supercomputers, trains that can reach over 370 mph, and ultra-modern megacities like Shanghai. At the same time, ancient traditions like traditional Chinese medicine, kung fu, and calligraphy still have millions ofpractitioners passionate about keeping the culture alive in the 21st century. No matter if it's the past, present or future, one thing is for certain - China's long, unbroken civilization has had an unparalleled impact on our world. From profound philosophies and groundbreaking inventions to enduring customs and art forms, China's heritage is truly ancient yet always evolving.I don't know about you, but learning about China's5,000-year journey has me feeling super inspired! I hope you found these glimpses into the Middle Kingdom's history and traditions as fascinating as I do. Who knows, maybe you'll grow up to become an archaeologist, chef, or scientist making new contributions to this amazing Chinese legacy!。

China's Cultural Heritage: The Enchanting World of Peking OperaChina's rich cultural heritage is a tapestry of ancient traditions and enduring artforms, each with its own captivating story to tell. Among the most revered and iconic of these cultural treasures is the mesmerizing theatrical art of Peking opera, or jingju. This centuries-old performance tradition has captivated audiences both within China and around the world, offering a unique and spellbinding glimpse into the depth and complexity of Chinese culture. At the heart of Peking opera lies a deep-rooted connection to the history and values of the Chinese people. Originating in the late 18th century, this form of theatre evolved from a diverse array of traditional Chinese performance styles, including the Kunqu and Yiyang opera traditions. Over time, Peking opera developed its own distinct set of conventions and techniques, incorporating elements of dance, acrobatics, music, and elaborate costuming to create a truly multifaceted art form. One of the most striking features of Peking opera is its use of stylized, highly symbolic movements and gestures. Each motion andpose is imbued with meaning, conveying the emotional states and dramatic tensions of the characters on stage. The performers, known as dan (female roles), sheng (male roles), jing (painted-face roles), and chou (clown roles), must undergo rigorous training to master the intricate physical vocabulary of Peking opera, which can take years to perfect. The music of Peking opera is equally captivating, blending the haunting melodies of traditional Chinese instruments such as the erhu (a two-stringed fiddle), pipa (a four-stringed lute), and various percussion instruments, with the powerful vocals of the performers. The singing style, known as bel canto, is characterized by its rich, resonant tones and the use of complex vocal techniques, including vibrato, falsetto, and the distinctive "nasal" quality that is so integral to the Peking opera sound.Perhaps one of the most distinctive and visually striking elements of Peking opera is the elaborate costumes and makeup worn by the performers. The intricate designs and bold colors of the costumes are not merely for aesthetic purposes but rather serve to convey the characters' social status, personality traits, and even their moral alignment within the story. The makeup, known as lianpu, is similarly symbolic, with each style of face paint corresponding to a specific archetype or role within the Peking opera tradition. The stories and themes explored in Peking opera are equally captivating, drawing upon a rich tapestry of Chinese history, mythology, and literature. From tales of heroic warriors and tragic lovers to fantastical stories of supernatural beings and mythical creatures, Peking opera offers a window into the deep well of Chinese cultural imagination. Many of the most famous Peking opera productions, such as "The Monkey King" and "The Drunken Concubine," have become beloved and enduring classics, passed down through generations of performers and audiences. One of the reasons Peking opera has endured for centuries is its ability to adapt and evolve while still maintaining its core traditions and values. Over the years, the art form has undergone various stylistic and thematic changes, incorporating new techniques and incorporating contemporary themes and perspectives. However, at its heart, Peking opera remains a celebration of the timeless values and artistic sensibilities that have defined Chinese culture for millennia.Today, Peking opera continues to captivate audiences both within China and around the world, as a testament to the enduring power of this unique and remarkable art form. From the intricate movements of the performers to the hauntingly beautiful music and the breathtaking visual spectacle of the costumes and sets, Peking opera offers a truly immersive and unforgettable experience thattransports viewers to the very heart of Chinese cultural heritage. As we look to the future, it is clear that Peking opera will continue to evolve and adapt, yet it will always remain a cherished and integral part of China's cultural legacy. Whether through the training of new generations of performers, the preservation of traditional techniques and stories, or the ongoing exploration of innovative ways to present this art form to modern audiences, Peking opera will undoubtedly continue to captivate and inspire audiences for generations to come.。

If you travel back to 1930s Shanghai, you would find most Chinese women wearing a similar type of dress. And that is the Qipao (also known as Cheongsam). Qipao is a relatively long, figure-fitting, one-piece dress that originated from gowns worn by the Manchu women in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The early version was a loose-fitting, trapzoidal-cut robe with long sleeves. And it was mainly made of thick brocade with intricate decoration.
Then, over 100 years ago, the modernized version of Qipao was invented, combining traditional Manchu gowns with western tailoring techniques. The modern Qipao is mainly made of gauze silk. The cut of the chest and waist is improved so that the dress becomes more close-fitting. The two side slits further accentuate the beauty and femininity of Chinese women. Meanwhile, modernQipao preserves traditional elements, such as the mandarin collar, the Pankou knots (frog fasteners) and exquisite embroidery, showing the beauty of Chinese culture.

Through the eyes of the characters, we see the impact of the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the rise of the Republic of China, and the influence of Western culture on Chinese society. One of the themes that stood out to me in Moments in Peking is the clash between tradition and modernity.

For the long historical tradition of the Chinese nation, translation can allow the West know about China from multiple perspectives. With the rise of Western translation theories in the second half of the 20th century, the theories were gradually introduced into China where the Chinese translation community began to gradually accept and learn. The emergence of deconstructionism was a shock for linguists in the 20th century. The theory about it is different from the "framework" and "structure" that people believed before. It emphasizes "uncertainty" and "f low". The rise of Derrida's deconstructionism not only means that translation theory has reached a new level, but also the concept of "translator's subjectivity" enters the stage. The rise of deconstructionism provides a solid guarantee for the study of contemporary translation theory and its application in translation practice.
