AAll over the world people enjoy sports, Sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when "their" player or team wins. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for(参加) them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump intoa pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada. Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or gamesall the time. Water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game together they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person’s character. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace(胜不骄,败不馁).21. Why do some people get excited when they watch a game? Because _______.A. they win the gameB. they get the good newsC. their favourite team winsD. they can’t help themselves22. Which of the sports has a long history?A. Water-skiing.B. Basketball.C. Volleyball.D. Long jump.23. Why do people from different countries often become friends after a game together?Because____________.A. they train their character in the gameB. they are friendly to each otherC. they understand each otherD. they help each otherBToday just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergonean “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” (机械化雇工) that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.7. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _______.A. how much money they can earn from their productsB. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. how much livestock to raiseD. when to sell their products8. Which of the following statements is true?A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms.C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.D. Students at agricultural colleges can do nothing without the help of computerson today’s farms.9. According to the engineers, _______will be done by robots in the near future.A. most of the farm workB. milking cowsC. all farm workD. some farm work10. What is the best title for the whole passage?A. Computer, Farmers’ Best FriendB. Farmers in The FutureC. The Agricultural RevolutionD. Computers and RobotsCGetting around in Canada is fairly easy. Most cities have urban transportation systems, including buses, streetcars, and trains, and some of the larger cities also have subways. You can board these systems at regular stops along their routes. Some let you pay with cash while others require tickets. If you don’t have a ticket for the bus, you must pay with the correct amount of money. This is because the driver does not carry any change. If you plan to stay in a city for a long time, you may want to buy a monthly pass or a package of tickets to save money. You can buy subway tickets at any subway station. If you have to take several buses or subways for a single trip, you do not need to pay money each time. Simply ask the driver for a transfer (换乘) ticket, or take one from the machines on the subway platform. If you are not sure where to board the bus or the streetcar, just ask someone or follow the crowd. People can usually only board at the front of the bus where you show your pass to the driver. When using public transportation, Canadians line up. First come, first serve, is a common approach to many activities in Canada, and it is considered to be extremely rude to cut in any line.Maps of routes and schedules are usually available from the public transit (运输) company in your area, and there is also a telephone information line. You may ask someone for the name of the transit company in your area, and then look it up in the telephone book.53. What is this passage mainly about?A. How to use public transportation in Canada.B. How to save money when traveling.C. Where to find subways in larger cities.D. How public transit companies work.54. If you pay the bus fare in cash, _____.A. you may be given some changeB. you can exchange money with the driverC. it might cost you a little moreD. you must have the exact amount of money55. By buying a monthly pass or a package of tickets, you can ______.A. take a bus whenever you wantB. go wherever you likeC. save moneyD. find comfortable seats56. If you have to change subway lines on a single trip, _____.A. you have to pay each timeB. you should buy another ticket from the machineC. you must ask for the driver’s permissionD. you just need to pay onceDFlorence Nightingale was born on May 12th, 1820 in Florence, Italy. ABorn in the State of New York on May 14th, 1984, Mark Zuckerberg was an instant success. In his high school years, he was considered one of top students in the classics, before moving into the arts, sciences, and literature, again picking up high marks and receiving academic praise. It earned him admission to Harvard University. As a rebellious yet relatively quiet student, he created a website called Facemash in the university– an instantly controversial website that encouraged students to rate each other based on appearance. The site was controversial for several reasons. The first was its illegal use of photographs, which the university and students took issue with. The second was its controversial nature – not every student liked being ranked based on their appearance. The third was its huge resource use –while it was hosted on Harvard servers, it was the most popular page in the university’s entire network.Zuckerberg was soon forced to shut the site down, but its popularity and controversy had made him consider its future potential. He soon turned the simple site into a personal one for Harvard students, encouraging them to network with their peers at the college. It was then, together with his two friends, that they launched “The Facebook”, which immediately spread to other colleges and grew into a public service that anyone could access in the United States, whether to network with friends and family, or to play games. The company has been criticized frequently, nevertheless, Zuckerberg has remained true to his initial vision – to create a website that the entire world can use to communicate openly and easily with one another and to keep the user experience clean and pure. The end result is one of the world’s biggest online businesses.Although its true value is debatable, it’s safe to say that Facebook, and its creator Mark Zuckerberg, are two of the twenty-first century’s most influential, controversial, and potentially powerful figures.1. But there's good news for animal lovers; you can now cosy up with a cup of tea while spending time with furry friends, as the global movement of animal café has reached the UK.The international phenomenon originated in Taipei, where the world's first cat café, Cat Flower Garden, opened in 1998. Curious tourists soon discovered the pet paradise and brought the concept over to Japan. The first Japanese cat café opened in Osaka in 2005, and now there are said to be nearly 40 in Tokyo alone.Japan has now gone far beyond the original concept, and some of the trendiest places to visit nowadays have owls, rabbits and goats hanging around. Tokyo's Fukuro no Mise, which means the “Shop of Owls” , has full guest lists for up to two months.Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium was the first of its kind to open up in East London last year. The successful cat café takes bookings 50 days ahead and usually about 90% of them book out about 5 -6 weeks in advance, Though the business has been a success, the owner Lauren Pears worries a little bit about the sudden rise of cat café everywhere.“Cat cafés are still in their beginnin gs here and we've seen a very recent cautionary tale springing up in Singapore with the sudden burst of cat café in the city. Earlier this year, one of them was closed down after serious animal welfare issues resulted in the deaths of several cats. ”She emphasizes that even though the job is fun and rewarding, it also comes with serious responsibility.8. Why are cat cafés so popular?A. They offer great services.B. They provide practical means to enjoy pets.C. They promote a new concept.D. They stay open for a long time.9. What is the concern of Lauren Pears?A. The sudden rise of illegal cat café.B. The blind expansion of cat café.C. Cat café owners' lack of responsibility.D. The possibility that cats may be unfriendly.10. What does the underlined part "cautionary tale" in the last paragraph refer to?A. GreetingB. Interview.C.Warning.D. Development.11. Which country does the text mainly report about?A . Singapore. B. China. C. Japan. D. UK.DWhen students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.Music tells us who we are, because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that GeorgeGershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive (情感的) meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.12. According to Paragraph 1, students ____ .A. prefer the arts to scienceB. disagree with their parents on educationC. view music as an overlooked subjectD. regard music as a way of entertainment13. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to_________ .A. compare it with rock musicB. prefer the arts to scienceC. introduce American musical traditionsD. show music identifies a society14. According to the passage, the arts and science__________.A. approach the world from different anglesB. explore different phenomena of the worldC. express people’s feeling in different waysD. explain what it means to be human15. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Music is an effective communication tool.B. Music should be of top education priority.C. Music education deserves more attention.D. Music education makes students more imaginative.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处得最佳选项。

AAir traffic controllers in the US have been advised to take 26-minute naps (小睡), after a series of accidents involving workers falling asleep. Now the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for “controlled naps” during nightshifts (夜班). NTSB member Mark Rosekind said that a 26-minute nap would improve performance by 34%. He believes that beyond the aviation (航空) industry, other professions, such as motoring and machinery, also carry obvious risks. But other experts doubt whether 26 minutes is the appropriate napping time. It’s a bit too long and risks you falling into a deep sleep, says Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Researc h Council. He said, “A nap of about 15 minutes is best; once you get beyond 20 minutes, you risk a deep sleep and you can be much more tired when you wake up. Therefore, we suggest that a nap be combined with a cup of coffee so that you can enjoy an effective sleep before the caffeine (咖啡因) takes effect in 20 minutes. However, this method only works on those who have had a poor night’s sleep. If you haven’t had a sleep the night before, this method won’t be enough to make you fresh.”Health writer, Linda Wasmer Andrews, also believes that 26 minutes is too long. She says a nap between 10 and 20 minutes is enough, and the timing of the nap is also important. Mostly I wished I was dead. It wasn’t even an accident that I cheated.Yesterday Mr. Burke announced there’d be a unit test and anyone who didn’t pass would have to come to school on Saturday, most particularly me, since I didn’t pass the last unit test. I did plan to study just to prove to him that I’m plenty smart---which I am mostly--- except in math.Anyway, I got my desk ready to study on. Just when I was ready to work, Nicho came into my room with our new rabbit and it jumped on my desk and knocked the flashcards all over the floor. What a mess! Nicho and I finally took the rabbit outside but then Philip came to my room and also Marty fro m next door and before long it was dinner. After dinner my father said I could watch a special on television if I’d done all my homework. Of course I said I had. That was the beginning. I felt terrible telling my father a lie about the homework. It was nine o’clock when I got up to my room and that was too late to study for the unit test so I lay in my bed with the light off and decided what I would do the next day when I w as in Mr. Burke’s math class not knowing the 8- and 9-times tables. So, you see, the cheating was planned after all.The next day, I’d go into class as usual, acting like things were going just great. I’d sit down next to Stanley Plummer---he is so smart in math it makes you sick---and from time to time, I’d glance over at his paper to copy the answers. Everything was okay except that my stomach was upside down and I wanted to die.The fact is, I couldn’t believe what I’d done in cold blood. I began to w onder about myself. I’ve never been a wonderful kid that everybody in the world loves.I have a bad temper and I like to have my own way and I argue a lot. Sometimes I can be mean. But most of the time I’ve thought of myself as a pretty decent kid. Mostly I work hard, I care for little kids, and I tell the truth. Now all of a sudden I’ve turned into this criminal. It’s hard to believe I’m just a boy. And all because of one stupid math test.Lying on the floor of my room, I begin to think that probably I’ve been bad all along. It just took this math test to clinch it. I’ll probably never tell the truth again.I tell my mother I’m sick when she calls me to come down for dinner. She doesn’t believe me, but puts me to bed anyhow. I lie there in the early winter darkness wondering what terrible thing I’ll be doing next when my father comes in and sits down on my bed.“What’s the matter?” he asks. “I’ve got a stomachache,” I say. Luckily, it’s too dark to see his face. “Is that all?” “Yeah.” “Mommy says you’ve been in your room since school.” “I was sick there too,” I say. “She thinks something happened today and you’re upset.” That’s the thing that really drives me crazy about my mother. She knows things sitting inside my head the same as if I was turned inside out.“Well,” my father says. I can tell he doesn’t believe me. “My stomach isfeeling sort of upset.” I hedge(避免做正面答复). “Okay,” he says and he pats my leg a nd gets up.Just as he shuts the door to my room I call out to him in a voice I don’t even recognize as my own. “How come?” he calls back not surprised or anything. So I tell him I cheated on this math test. To tell the truth, I’m pretty much surprised at myself. I didn’t plan to tell him anything. He doesn’t say anything at first and that just about kills me. I’d be fine if he’d spank(打屁股) me or something. And then he says I’ll have to call Mr. Burke. It’s not what I had in mind. “Now?” I ask surprised. “Now,” he says. He turns on the light and pulls off my covers. “I’m not going to,” I say.But I do it. I call Mr. Burke, and I tell him exactly what happened, even that I decided to cheat the night before the test. He says I’ll come on Saturday to take another test, which is okay with me, and I thank him a whole lot for being understanding and all.“Today I thought I was turning into a criminal,” I tell my father when he turns out my light.Sometimes my fath er kisses me good night and sometimes he doesn’t. I never know. But tonight he does.73. Singaporeans, even those of the same ethnic group (少数民族), have many different first languages and cultures. For example, within the Singaporean Chinese group, nearly a third speak English as their home language while almost half speak Standard Chinese as their home language and the rest speak various Chinese dialects (方言) as their home language. Due to these reasons, the English fluency level of people in Singapore varies vastly from person to person. Most reasonably educated Singaporeans do speak Singapore Standard English, alternatively known as Educated Singapore English, which, grammatically, is not different from standard British English, with changes being limited to accent and a few borrowed words, causing few challenges to any native Britons.Singapore English derives (起源) its roots from the 146 years of British colonial rule over Singapore until its independence in 1965. Before 1965, the standard form of English in Singapore had always been British English. After Singapore declared independence, English in Singapore began to take a life of its own, leading to the development of modern Singapore English.English had been the official language of the colonial government, and when Singapore gained self-government in 1959, the local government decided to keep English as the main language in order to help develop economy. The use of English as the nation’s first language serves to bridge the gap between different ethnic groups in Singapore. English is the global language for commerce, technology and science, and improvement of English also helps to expedite Singapore’s developmentand it becomes important part of the global economy. There is an increasing trend of Singaporeans speaking English at home. For children who started primary school in 2009, 60% of Chinese along with 60% Indian pupils and 35% of Malay pupils mainly speak English at home. Because many Singaporeans grew up with English as their first language in school, some Singaporean Chinese may not be able to speak Standard Chinese.47.How many people in Singapore are native?A. AAlfred Carlton Gilbert(1884-1961) was a man of many ideas and talents. As a small boy, he kept trying new things. At age 12, he started a sports club for his friends and got their school to have a field day with active games and prizes. As he grew and practiced, Gilbert became skilled at pole vaulting(撑杆跳高), pull-ups, the long jump and football.Gilbert broke the world record for pull-ups in 1900 and the distance record for running long dive in 1902. And he won a gold medal in the pole vault at the Olympic Games in 1908. By that time, he had nearly finished medical studies. Choosing not to make medicine his career, Gilbert co-founded Mysto Manufacturing, a manufacturer of magic sets, in 1907. Gilbert had amused his friends and earned college money by doing magic tricks, so he knew what was needed. One day, Gilbert saw workers using steel girders(钢梁) to build towers for power lines. That gave him the idea for the Erector Set, a popular construction toy.In 1917, the Council of National Defense thought no toys should be produced for Christmas because the country was fighting in World War I. Gilbert and other men from the Toy Manufacturers of America went to Washington, with about 40 different toys. They had 15 minutes to speak. This meeting was at the end of a long, hard day. Gilbert told the government men at the meeting how toys helped children learn. His helpers brought out the toys. Soon, the tired government men were on the floor, playing with building sets, models of navy ships, and other toys. The time limit was forgotten; so was the Christmas toy ban(禁令).Gilbert spent the rest of his life improving erector sets. His company made andsold the sets, plus chemistry and other science sets and toy trains. He made items for homes, businesses, and the army. Her last goals reach far beyond the 20 platform schools she and her colleagues have created in I ndia’s Bhubaneswar region. No pains , no gainsDDomestic (驯养的) horses now pull ploughs, race in the Kentucky Derby, and carry police. But early horses weren’t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals’ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn’t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horse were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new from of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world59. Before domestication horses were ______.A. caught for sportsB. hunted for foodC. made to pull ploughsD. used to carry people60. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to show ______.A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horseB. horse used to have gentle personalitiesC. some horses have better shaped than othersD. horses were of less variety before domestication61. 2016高二英语寒假试卷及参考答案第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
AMany animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when giventhe choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such asFranceandBritain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.1. We can infer from the text that humans and animals.A. depend on one sense in choosing foodB. are not satisfied with their foodC. choose food in similar waysD. eat entirely different food2. Which of the following eats only one type of food?A. The white butterfly.B. The small bird.C. The bear.D. The fox.3. Certain animals change their choice of food when _________.A. the season changesB. the food color changesC. they move to different placesD. they are attracted by different smells4. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again myhusband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity (人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.8. Why was the bike so important to the couple?A. The mans job was bike racing.B. It was their only possession.C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.D. They used it for work and daily life9. We can infer from the text that__________.A. the couple worked 60 hours a weekB. people were busy before ChristmasC. the stranger brought over the bikeD. life was hard for the young family10. How did people get to know the couples problem?A. From radio broadcasts.B. From a newspaper.C. From TV news.D. From a stranger.11. What do the couple learn from their experience?A. Strangers are usually of little help.B. One should take care of theirbike.C. News reports make people famous.D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.The Peales were a famous family of American artists.Charles Willson Peale is best remembered for his portraits of leading figures of the American Revolution. He painted portraits(肖像) of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.Charles Willson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The worlds first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays of animals in their natural settings.Pealefound the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museums most popular display was the skeleton(骷髅)of a huge, extinct elephant, which Pealeunearthedon a New York farm in 1801.Three of Peales seventeen children were also famous artists.Raphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. His brother Rembrandt studied under his father and painted portraits of many noted people, including one of GeorgeWashington.Another brother, Rubens Peale, painted mostly landscapes and portraits.James Peale, the brother of Charles Willson Peale, specialized in miniatures(小画像).His daughter Sarah Miriam Peale was probably the first professional female portrait painter in America.12.The author mentions in Paragraph 1 that Washington tipped his hat to the figures in the painting to show that ________.A.Charles Willson Peales painting was very lifelikeB.Washingtonrespected Charles Willson Peales workC.Washingtonwas friendly with Raphaelle and Titian PealeD.the painting of the two brothers was very large13.The underlined word “unearthed” is closest in meaning to“ ______”.A.showedB.inventedC.dug upD.looked over14.Which of the following is NOT the child of Charles Willson Peale?A.Titian Peale.B.Rubens Peale.C.Raphaelle Peale.D.Sarah Miriam Peale.15.The authors attitude toward the Peales is in general _______.A.puzzledB.admiringC.excitedD.disappointed第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

高二英语寒假作业7训练日期:2月 7日Sydney—A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his fatherat a beach in Sydney on February 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast ofAustralia's largest city in a month. The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon, on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months."The father heard a scream and turned to see his son trashing (扭动) about in the water," police said."Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to shore by his father.Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller: "It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water." He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to shore."There was a lot of pain, as you can imagine".The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.Police said the bites" cut through to the bone" , but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures (骨折).He was in a stable condition now.Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy."I don't even know if he saw it," Miller said. Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach.Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eater made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws—are protected in Australianwaters.【小题1】The report mainly tells us _______.A.shark attacks on humans are on the riseB.sharks attacked humans three times in one monthC.a boy was attacked by a shark at a Sydney beachD.shark numbers are increasing in the waters off Sydney's beaches【小题2】The underlined word" savaged "in the first paragraph probably means _______.A.attracted B.dragged C.bit D.packed【小题3】What do we know about the city of Sydney from the passage?A.It is one of the largest cities in Australia.B.Sydney harbor is not far from the famous Opera House.C.There are many locals and tourists on its coast all year round.D.There are few shark species in the waters off Sydney's beaches.【小题4】All the followings are the causes of Australia's sharks increasing EXCEPT that_______.A.environmental protection has created a cleaner environmentB.a ban on commercial fishing has increased fish numbersC.many shark species are protected in Australia watersD.the film Jaws made the Great White famous第二节短文改错It was quiet, sunny afternoon. No pains , no gainsDDomestic (驯养的) horses now pull ploughs, race in the Kentucky Derby, and carry police. But early horses weren’t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think th e first interactions humans had with horses were far different f rom those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that liv ed around them for food. Over time, people began to catch th e animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestica tion.As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For ex ample, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a ge ntle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People w ho used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to kee p stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly con trolled by the animals’ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these c hosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes a nd sizes. This variety didn’t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest br eeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, t he animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came o n the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horse s to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societie s. For example, horse were important tools in the advanceme nt of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before t hey were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on fo ot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in differ ent areas to interact with one another. The new from of rapid t ransportation helped cultures spread around the world59. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to sho w ______.A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horseB. horse used to have gentle personalitiesC. some horses have better shaped than othersD. horses were of less variety before domestication61. 得夺市安庆阳光实验学校第七天一.美文晨读Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street boy was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it."Is this your car, Mister?" he asked.Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was astonished. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish...." He hesitated. Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said made Paul quite surprised."I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?""Oh, yes, I'd love that."After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again."Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car. "There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm gonna give you one just like it... then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about."Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas Eve, Paul learned that it was more blessed to give.... 二.词汇训练1. ASleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and the brain grow and develop. However, many Chinese do not sleep well, and many do not pay enough attention to sleep. The Chinese Medical Doctor Association released the 2013 China Sleep Quality Index(指数)on March 19 to mark World Sleep Day---March 21.According to the index, nearly a quarter of Chinese people don’t sleep well.Half said that they feel tired after getting up and 15 percent people have trouble falling asleep.Ye Jingying,a sleep expert at Beijing Tongren hospital, says:“If people often wake up during the night,or always feel weak and tired in the day, they should pay attention to their sleep pattern.〞Many people play with their cell phones or i pads before sleeping. The report said that this is one of the main reasons for bad sleep.Other reasons include stress and bad moods. How to sleep well? Above all,get enough sleep.Seven to nine hours of sleep every night is perfect for an adult, and eight to nine hours is best for a teenager.Forming good sleep habits is important. The report suggested that people need to keep away from digital devices(数码产品〕for at least an hour before sleep. The lights keep their brains excited for a long while.Other suggestions include:try togo to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends and during holidays, and do the same relaxing things before bed each night, like listening to soft music.56.According to the passage,World Sleep Day falls on_____.A.March 12B.March 19C.March 31D.March 2157.Which of the following means that you sleep well?A.You feel tired after getting upB.You wake up several times during the night.C.You can fall asleep within 20 minutes.D.You often do something boring until you feel sleepy.58.From the article,Which of the following may NOT cause sleeping problems?A.Having sad or angry feelings.B.Reading a book late at night.C.Playing with digital devices before sleeping.D.Being under strong stress about their life or work.BA popular saying goes,“Sticks and stone may break my bones, but wo rds will never hurt me.〞However, that's not really true. Words h ave the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter i f the words come from someone else or ourselves-the positive and neg ative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrass ed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't be, because more an d more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy h abit. This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, sol ve problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay posit ive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We sh ould also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean you r room, join me in saying,“Go od job !〞Often, words come out of our mouths without our thinking about the effects they will have; but we should be aware that our words cause certain responses to others. For example, when returning an i tem to a store, we might use warm friendly language during the exch ange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or w e can use harsh, critical language, which will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive. Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remembe r unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ou rselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.Words possess power both positive and negative. Those around us recei ve encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem〔自尊〕and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all tho se things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.64. The author argues in the first paragraph that.A. words have lasting effects on usB. words will never hu rt us at allC. positive effects last longer than negative effectsD. negative words may let us down65. Why should we not feel embarrassed when talking to ourselves?A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to oneself.B. Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health.C. Talking to ourselves helps us to solve all the problems.D. It does harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone.66. Which of the following statements would the author agree to?A. Unkind words are more likely to be forgotten.B. It is better to think twice before talking to others.C. Words always possess long positive effects.D. Kind words are sometimes not needed at all.67. Why should we talk in a friendly way when returning an item toa store?A. Because kind words build u p complex relationships.B. Because the clerk in a store is hard to deal with.C. Because friendly words cause positive responses.D. Because critical language may hurt your feelings.CToday, home-ownership has reached extremely high levels. Modern generations tend to believe there is something wrong with them if they rent. However, is high home-ownership really as rosy as people imagine? Staring at data first, we realize that the most successful, stable, attractive country in the Western world is Switzerland. It has tiny unemployment; wealth; high happiness and mental-health scores. Does it have high home-ownership rates? Absolutely not. In Switzerland, about seven in ten of the population are renters. Yet, with Europe's lowest home-ownership rate, the nation thrives. Now go to the other end of the miserydistribution. Spain has approximately the highest home-ownership rate in Europe (at more than 80%). But one-quarter of its population are unemployed.A likely reason is that high levels of home-ownership mess up the labour market. In a sensibly functioning economy it is easy for people to move around to drop into the vibrant job slots thrown up by technological change. With a high degree of owner-occupation, everything slows. Folk get stuck. Renters can go to new jobs. In that way they do the economy a favour. As Friedman said, the rate of unemployment depends on the flexibility of the housing market.Next we come to economic breakdown. Most analysts accept that at heart it was the housing market—obsessive pursuit of homes, the engendered mortgage(房贷) lending and an unavoidable house-price crash—that sank the Western world. Germany, say, with its more efficient rental market, had a far smoother ride through trouble. As for the monetary system, in the past few decades, in the hope of getting untaxed capital gains way above their true labour earnings, many people threw their spare cash into buying larger houses or building extra bedrooms. TV programmes about how to make easy money, beautiful rising house prices, and most importantly, our falulty tax system encouraged that. When at some point market broke down, everyone suffered. Our countries ought, instead, to design tax systems that encourage people to invest in productive real activities and in innovation. Renting leaves money free for better purposes. That also points to the role of sensible budgeting over a person's lifetime. Why should we think that when we die it is necessary to have paid off an entire house? Our children do not deserve it. Let them pay for themselves. We should rent—and enjoy our lives with the money saved. Finally, moderation usually pays off. Our scientific understanding of how economies function is horribly limited. This suggests that the golden rule should be to avoid extremes. A 50-50 mix of home-ownership and renting, not the 70-30 splitthat is now observed in so many Western nations, makes sense.82. The cases of Switzerland and Spain prove that ______.A. low home-ownership rate at about 30% is most favourable for economyB. home-ownership mainly decides a country’s citizens’ mental health.C. home-ownership has a lot to do with a country’s technological developmentD. low home-ownership increases the mobility of job market and economy.83. The main reason to make people invest in housing market is ______.A. the problematic taxing approach favouring house buyingB. people’s desire to avoi d their money from devaluingC. easy channels to obtain methods to make easy moneyD. people’s wishes to live in larger and more comfortable houses84. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Switzerland suffers the worse unemployment in Europe.B. Renting allows more money into more creative economic activities.C. Germany’s effective mortgage system saw it through the western economic crisis.D. Our children have the right to enjoy the housing property we have paid off.85. What opinion does the author agree with most?A. People should learn the workings of housing market.B. Laws should be set up to stop people from buying houses.C. An adequate rate of home-ownership should be kept.D. People should follow the good example of Europe in housing investment.DAs you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as yon need. You almost certainly own a car andpossibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week. Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs , leaving their two children with a nanny (保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn't get home until eight or nine o'clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. "I always wanted to have a farm hen," says Daniel, "and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It's taken some getting used to, but it's been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it's made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.Liz, however, is not quite sure. "I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I'm not really a country girl, but I suppose I'm gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all."74. What do the first two paragraphs tell us?A. People seldom work long hours to make money.B. People hardly buy more things than necessary.C. People are sure everything they own is in the right place.D. People realize there is more to life than just making money.75. When Daniel was a reporter he _________________.A. lived in central LondonB. disliked his jobC. missed his childrenD. was well paid76. What does the underlined "it" in the last paragraph refer to?A. Child-caring.B. Liz's advice.C. Downshifting.D. Liz's job.77. The underlined word "downshifting" in the second paragraph means _________.A. repairing your car by yourselfB. spending money carefullyC. moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better lifeD. living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week.第二节〔七选五共5小题,每一小题2分,总分为10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

When he died in 1961, he had 150 patents (专利)for his many inventions. But his main joy was in helping children learn and have fun at the same time.67. The amazing Mr. Gilbert.BAs a school teacher, Inderjit Khurana used to take the train to work. And one day, at the station, she saw dozens of children who spent their days begging from train passengers rather than going to school. She learned that it was not a rare problem and that millions of children in India lived on the streets.Realizing that these children would never be able to escape poor life and homelessness without education, and that it would be impossible to send these children to school, Inderjit decided to create a model program---taking the school to the most out- of-school children.Khurana’s train platform schools aim to provide a creative school form and give children the basic levels of education. Her last goals reach far beyond the 20 platform schools she and her colleagues have created in India’s Bhubaneswar region. She is determined that her program will become a model for changing the lives of the poorest children throughout India and the world.Khurana founded the Ruchika Social Service Organization(RSSO) in 1985. The teachers gather the children together between the stops of the train for reading, writing, maths and history taught through songs and other teaching tools.Khurana recently comes to realize that the education of these children is impossible when the most basic needs of their families are not being met. Horses contributed to the spread of culture by ______.A. carrying heavy loadsB. changing farming methodsC. serving as a means of transportD. advancing agriculture in different areas62. He says students in his beginning phonetics class are mostly interested in teaching English as a second language. They wanted to study hownon-native speakers pronounce different sounds."So we sent the students out to record non-native speakers, and we compared those speakers to each other and to native speakers of English,” said S teven Weinberger.Professor Weinberger wrote a paragraph for all of the speakers to read. The paragraph uses common words but contains almost all of the sounds used in English. Here is that sixty-nine-word paragraph:“Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snakeand a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three re d bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station.”In 1999, Professor Weinberger put the recordings online. The Speech Accent Archive is for anyone who wants to compare and analyze the accents of different English speakers. Some people think the archive would be better if it included natural speech-people talking freely, not just reading the same words. Professor Weinberger recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of his site.Professor Weinberger says the site gets a million visits a month and would like more people to send in theirown samples of thesixty-nine-word paragraph.Steven Weinberger said, ‘‘Right now we only have samples from about 350 languages, including English. It’s a bit too long and risks you falling into a deep sleep, says Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Council. Putting your head down too early means your body may not be ready to sleep yet, but a nap that is too late in a day might make it harder to fall asleep. Early afternoon is often the best time, between l pm to 3pm, when people experience a post-lunch decrease in energy.45. What does the text mainly talk about?A. People who need a nap.B. How long a nap should last.C. When people should take a nap.D. The reason why people need a nap.46. Jim Horne thinks that a 26-minute nap is not appropriate because ________.A. people risk a deep sleep and may feel more tiredB. the guidelines for drivers can reduce the napping timeC. people who had a poor sleep need some more napping timeD. it’s a little long for people who didn’t sleep the night before47. According to Linda Wasmer Andrews, ________.A. 2 pm is an appropriate napping timeB. people’s energy wi ll increase after lunchC. your body is ready to sleep at late time in the dayD. a late nap may lead to sleep problems during the nightBI cheated on a unit test in math class this morning during second period with Mr Burke .Afterward, I was too sick to eat lunch just thinking about it.I came straight home from school, went to my room, and lay on the floor trying to decide whether it would be better to run away from home now or after supper. Mostly I wished I was dead. It wasn’t even an accident that I cheated.Yesterday Mr. Burke announced there’d be a unit test and anyone who didn’t pass would have to come to school on Saturday, most particularly me, since I didn’t pass the last unit test. I did plan to study just to prove to him that I’m plenty smar t---which I am mostly--- except in math.Anyway, I got my desk ready to study on. It was nine o’clock when I got up to my room and that was too late to study for the unit test so I lay in my bed with the light off and decided what I would do the next day when I was in Mr. Burke’s math class not knowing the 8- and 9-times tables. So, you see, the cheating was planned after all.The next day, I’d go into class as usual, acting like things were going just great. I’d sit down next to Stanley Plummer---he is so smart in math it makes you sick---and from time to time, I’dglance over at his paper to copy the answers. Everything was okay except that my stomach was upside down and I wanted to die.The fact is, I couldn’t believe what I’d done in cold blood. I began to w onder about myself. I’ve never been a wonderful kid that everybody in the world loves. I have a bad temper and I like to have my own way and I argue a lot. “My stomach is feeling sort of upset.”I hedge(避免做正面答复). Burke. It’s n ot what I had in mind. By saying “ It wasn’t even an accident that I cheat ed” , the author means that_______.A. he had planned not to study before the testB. he had planned to cheat with Plummer before the testC. he decided to cheat after he had wasted the whole eveningD. he decided to cheat when he knew there was going to be a test74. Before the cheating, the author thought that_______.A. he was a bad boy in everythingB. he always did what he was toldC. he was a boy that everyone lovedD. he was a decent child but not perfect75. After he was informed of what he had done, the father________.A. scolded the author severelyB. didn’t say anything and leftC. called Mr. Burke immediatelyD. let the author make a call to Mr. Burke76. Most reasonably educated Singaporeans do speak Singapore Standard English, alternatively known as Educated Singapore English, which, grammatically, is not different from standardBritish English, with changes being limited to accent and a few borrowed words, causing few challenges to any native Britons.Singapore English derives (起源) its roots from the 146 years of British colonial rule over Singapore until its independence in 1965. English is the global language for commerce, technology and science, and improvement of English also helps to expedite Singapore’s development and it becomes important part of the global economy. Less than a quarter of the population.B. About forty percent of the population.C. Only half of the population.D. Nearly sixty percent of the population.48.According to the text, when did the British begin to rule Singapore?A. In 146B. In 1819C. In 1959D. In 1965.49.What is the meaning of the underlined word “expedite” in Paragraph 4?A. Speed up.B. Bring down.C. Put off.D. Hold back.50.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A. The British government suggested people in Singapore use more English.B. English has replaced all the other languages in Singapore.C.
