I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the doorbell, but she was fast asleep. So I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window. I was almost there when a sarcastic voice below said, “I don’t think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night.” I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman. I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, “I enjoy cleaning windows at night.”“So do I,” answered the policeman in the same tone. “Excuse my interrupting you. I hate to interrupt a man when he’s busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station?”“Well, I’d prefer to stay here,” I said. “You see, I’ve forgotten my key.”“You what?” he called.“My key,” I shouted.Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.Summary:On arriving home early in the morning, the writer failed to ______________________________ by ringing the doorbell. Write a summary with about 30 words.Advertising can be a service to customers. This is true when ads give reliable information about the goods advertised. Such information is needed if the customer is to make a wise choice when he buys something. It is useful because it can help the customer know more about the kinds of goods available in the shops. However, some ads are not very useful to the customers. Instead of helping the customer to satisfy his real needs, they set out to make him want unnecessary things by doing ads cleverly. They set out to make us believe what they advertise will make us cleverer, prettier, more handsome, if only we use it. For example, the voice on TV says, “By using our SKII, it makes your skin crystal” The screen shows a series of pictures in which a famous actress not only has her skin whitened but also has her pronounced wrinkles silkily smoothed. The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.(#B3 lesson3)
广外英语考研真题 英语写作与翻译2004[试卷%2B答案]
广东外语外贸大学2004年硕士研究生入学考试英语语言文学及外国语言学与应用语言学英语写作与翻译试题Part One Writing (100)Task 1: Summary Writing (40%)Directions:Read carefully the following passage and summarize its contents in 150-200 words. Note that you must not copy complete sentences directly from the original. Failure to do so would incur deduction of your scores.PassagePlato - who may have understood better what forms the mind of man than do some of our contemporaries who want their children exposed only to "real" people and everyday events - knew what intellectual experiences make for tree humanity. He suggested that the future citizens of his ideal republic begin their literary education with the telling of myths, rather than with mere facts or so-called rational teachings. Even Aristotle, master of pure reason, said, "The friend of wisdom is also a friend of myth."Modem thinkers who have studied myths and fairy tales from a philosophical or psychological viewpoint arrive at the same conclusion, regardless of their original persuasion. Mircea Eliade, for one, describes these stories as "models ~for human behavior [that],,:by that very fact, give .meaning and value to life." Drawing on anthropological parallels, he and others suggest that myths and fairy tales were derived from, or give symbolic expression to, initiation rites or rites of passage - such as metaphoric death of an old, inadequate self in order to be reborn on a higher plane of existence. He feels that this is why these tales meet a strongly felt need and are carders of such deep meaning.Other investigators with a depth-psychological orientation emphasize the similarities between the fantastic events in myths and fairy tales and those in adult dreams and daydreams - the fulfillment of wishes, the winning out over all competitors, the destruction of enemies - and conclude that one attraction of this literature is its expression of that which is normally prevented from coming to awareness. There are, of course, very significant differences between fairy tales and dreams. For example, in dreams more often than not the wish fulfillment is disguised, while in fairy tales much of it is openly expressed. To a considerable degree, dreams are the result of inner pressures which have found no relief, of problems which beset a person to which he knows no solution and to which the dream finds none. The fairy tale does the opposite: it projects the relief of all pressures and not only offers ways to solve problems but promises that a "happy" solution will be found. We cannot control what goes on in our dreams. Although our inner censorship influences what we may dream, such control occurs on an unconscious level. The fairy tale, on the other hand, is very much the result of common conscious and unconscious content having been shaped by the conscious mind, not of one particular person, but the consensus of many in regard to what they view as universal human problems, and what they accept as desirable solutions. If all these elements were not present in a fairy tale, it would not be retold by generation after generation. Only if a fairy tale met the conscious and unconscious requirements of many people was it repeatedly retold, listened to with great interest. No dream of a person could arouse such persistent interest unless it was worked into a myth, as was the story of the pharaoh's dream as interpreted by Joseph in the Bible.参考答案Great thinkers like Plato and Aristotle shared the same idea that myth should enjoy a superior status in education. Even modern thinkers to certain extend agree with that idea as they reached a conclusion that myth partly reflected and satisfied the inner desires of human beings. Those fantastic events in myths resemble likeliness to our dreams or daydreams. Still differences exist. Such as dream reflects social pressure we faced, but it offers no solution. On the contrary, myth goes the opposite way. Unlike dreams, Myths are the symbolic projections of a people’s hope, values, fears and aspirations. And any myth is classic.Task 2: Essay Writing (60%)Directions:In recent years China has witnessed a drastic increase in the annual enrollment of university students. While some hail it as an achievement of historical significance that marks the beginning of popularizing China's education of higher learning, others dismiss it as nothing but an educational "great leap forward" that will do more harm than good to the quality of college education in China. Write an essay of 500 - 600 words unequivocally expressing your stand on this issue. Whatever position you take,, make sure to justify your decision. Give a title to your essay.参考范文In China a saying goes like this: It takes ten years for a tree to grow to its full height, but a hundred for qualified personnel to mature. From this sentence we can infer the high status of education in our country. In recent years China has witnessed a drastic increase in the annual enrollment of university students. The existence of this phenomenon should be due to the following reasons. First, the number of college students only takes a small share in the whole population. As time requires, we need more educated citizens to take part in the construction of China. The current college students are far from enough. Second, compared with other powers, like Britain and America, China has much less college students. This situation doesn’t fit China’s image as a big power. As a result, a drastic increase in the annual enrollment of university students emerged as the time requires. Around the issue of enrollment increase, people’s reactions are different. They can roughly be categorized into two groups: advocators and opponents. Some stress the significance of this move, while others emphasize their worry about the qualification of college education. Both sides have their reasons. While in my opinion, the increase of enrollment is inevitable, but we can’t be hasty in doing it.First of all, as I mentioned above, the increase of enrollment is the requirement of China’s development. We need more workers, more engineers, more businessmen, etc. And the increase would offer what we need in a comparatively short time. The advantage of it cannot be neglected. On the other hand, so many students rushed into university would directly cause the inadequacy of hardware as well as software of the university. For example, in English department, a class used tohave less than twenty students. But now a small classroom is jammed with more than 40 people. And this means more students have to share limited resources. The quality of education might be largely influenced. So from this point, people’s worry is not groundless. In addition, to accommodate so many freshmen, university has to invest much more money in reforming the current dorms and build new ones. University would then charge students more tuition. This directly adds more burden on their families. Then how to solve this problem? I personally think we should limit the increase of enrollment to minimize the negative effects. Rome is not built in one day. I t’s a long and hard process to develop education. So we should fulfill the aim step by step. Thus we can build a win-win situation.Part Two Translation (50)1.Translate the following passage into Chinese:(25)The Asking AnimalCaught between two eternities—the vanished past and the unknown future—human beings never cease to seek their bearings and sense of direction. We inherit our legacy of the sciences and the arts—the works of the great discoverers and creators, the Columbuses and Leonardos—but we all remain seekers. Man is the asking animal…Western culture has witnessed at least three grand historical epochs of seeking—each with a dominant spirit, enduring spokesmen and distinctive problems. We have gone from “Why?” to the “How?”, from the search for purpose to the search for causes.First was the heroic way of prophets and philosophers seeking answers—salvation or truth—from the God above or the reason within each of us. Then came an age of communal seeking, pursuing civilization in the liberal spirit. And most recently there was the age of the social sciences, in which man was ruled by the forces of history. We can draw on all these ways of seeking in our personal search for purpose, to find meaning in the seeking.参考译文探索的动物要已消逝的过去与未知的未来的夹缝之间,人类从未停止对人生的意义和前进方向的探索。
summary的造句
summary的造句Summary writing is a skill that requires the writer to condense and consolidate complex information into a concise and coherent piece. Writing a summary can be a daunting task, especially when dealing with large amounts of information. However, with the right approach and practice, one can master the art of summary writing. The first step in summary writing is to read the original text thoroughly. It is essential to have a clear understanding of the main ideas, arguments, and supporting examples presented in the text. By grasping the core message of the text, the writer can identify the key points that need to be included in the summary.Once the main points have been identified, the writer should start organizing the information in a logical and coherent manner. This can be done by creating an outline or a mind map, which can serve as a guide throughout the writing process. The writer should aim to arrange the information in a structured way, ensuring that each point is presented in a clear and concise manner. When writing the summary, it is crucial to use one's own words and to avoid copying directly from the original text. Plagiarism is a serious offense and can result in severe consequences. Instead, the writer should strive to paraphrase the information, using their own language and style. This not only demonstrates one's understanding of the text but also ensures that the summary is unique and original. While summarizing, it is important to focus on the key ideas and arguments presented in the text. Minor details and examples should be omitted unless they are necessary to support the main points. The writer should also be mindful of the length of the summary. It should be neither too long nor too short but rather an accurate representation of the original text.Another essential aspect of summary writing is to maintain coherence and flow throughout the piece. This can be achieved by using appropriate transition words and phrases to connect the different ideas and points. Additionally, the writer should ensure that the summary is well-structured, with clear introduction, body, and conclusion sections.Proofreading and editing are critical steps in summary writing. After completing the first draft, the writer should carefully review the summary for any grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or punctuation errors. It is also important to check the flow and coherence of the summary, making any necessary adjustments to improve the overall quality of the writing. In conclusion, summary writing is a valuable skill that requires practice and attention to detail. By thoroughly understanding the original text and effectively organizing the information, one can create a concise and coherent summary. By paraphrasing and using one's own words, the writer can ensure the originality of the summary. With proper proofreading and editing, the writer can produce a polished and well-written summary. Overall, summary writing is an essential skill that can be applied in various academic and professional contexts.。

雅思13test1writing task 1范文
雅思13test1writing task 1范文The IELTS Test is designed to assess the English language skills of individuals who wish to study or work in English-speaking countries. One of the sections of the test is the Writing Task 1, which requires test takers to analyze and interpret visual information, such as graphs, charts, or diagrams, and present key features or trends. In this task, I will provide a sample response for the Writing Task 1 of IELTS Test 1 from Cambridge IELTS 13. The given chart displays the percentage of children from four different countries who used the Internet between the years 2009 and 2014.The chart presents information on the Internet usage of children aged 5 to 15 in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and France. The data is divided into three categories: those who never used the Internet, those who used the Internet less than once a week, and those who used the Internet once a week or more.Overall, the chart illustrates an increasing trend in Internet use among children fromall four countries between 2009 and 2014. In addition, it demonstrates significant differences in Internet usage patterns among these countries.Starting with the United Kingdom, in 2009, approximately 10% of children never used the Internet, while around 35% used it less than once a week. About 55% of children in the UK were regular Internet users, spending at least one hour per week online. Overthe five-year period, the percentage of non-users decreased steadily, dropping to around 3% in 2014. Conversely, the proportion of children using the Internet less than once a week remained relatively stable. Meanwhile, the percentage of those using the Internet once a week or more increased significantly to reach approximately 85% in 2014.In Spain, the initial figures in 2009 showed that around 18% of children never had access to the Internet. In contrast to the UK, the percentage of non-users increasedslightly to nearly 20% in 2014. 英语写作与翻译2003答案广外
广东外语外贸大学2003年硕士研究生入学考试英语写作与翻译Task 1: Summary Writing (40%)Directions:Read carefully the following passage and summarize its contents in 100-120 words. Note that you must not copy complete sentences directly from the original. Failure to do so would incur deduction of your scores.PassageKilling for SportIt wouldn’t be quite true to say that “some of my best friends are hunters.” Still, I do number among my respected acquaintances some who not only kill for the sake of killing but count it among their keenest pleasures. And I can think of no better illustration of the fact that men may be separated at some point by fathomless abyss yet share elsewhere much common ground. To me, it is inconceivable that anyone can think an animal more interesting dead than alive, I can also easily prove, to my own satisfaction, that killing “for sport” is the perfect type of that pure evil for which metaphysicians have sometimes sought. Most wicked deeds are done because the doer proposes some good for himself. The liar lies to gain some end; the swindler and the thief want things which, if honestly got, might be good in themselves. Even the murderer is usually removing some impediment to normal desires. Though all of these are selfish or unscrupulous, their deeds are not gratuitously evil. But the killer for sport seems to have no such excusable motive. He seems merely to prefer death to life, darkness to light. He seems to get nothing other than the satisfaction of saying: “Something which wanted to live is dead. Because I can bring terror and agony, I assure myself that I have power. Because of me there is that much less vitality, consciousness and perhaps joy in the universe. I am the spirit that denies.” When a man wantonly destroys one of the works of man, we call him “Vandal.” When he wantonly destroys one of the works of God, we call him “Sportsman.”The hunter-for-food may be as wicked and as misguided as vegetarians sometimes say, but he does not kill for the sake of killing. The ranchers and the farmers who exterminate all living things not immediately profitable to them may sometimes be working against their own best interests; but whether they are or not, they hope to achieve some supposed good by the exterminations, if to do evil, not in the hope of gain but for evil’s sake, involves the deepest guilt by which man can be stained, then killing for killing’s sake is a terrifying phenomenon and as strong a proof as we could have of the “reality of evil” with which present-day theologians are again concerned.Task 2: Interpretation of Graphical Information and essay writing (60%)Directions:The relationship between the degree of participation in physical exercises during senior high school years and academic achievements after graduation is investigated. He is the sovereign of an empire, self supporting, self-contained… No one can deprive him of his stock in trade; no one can force him to exercise his faculty against his will; no one can prevent him exercising it as he chooses. 1. Weight loss is most likely to be successful when people change their habits. Here are several ways to make that happen. 2. Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscles ---both of which help you look and feel good and keep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. 3.One reason people get less exercise these days is because of an increase in “screen time”--- the amount of time spent watching TV, looking at the computer, or playing video games. Limit recreational screen time to less than 2 hours per day. When you really get away from “screens”, such as TV, computers, IPad or mobile phones, you will really benefit a lot. 4P. ortion sizes are bigger than they used to be, and these extra calories contribute to obesity. Another key factor in weight gain is that more people drink sugary drinks, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks. So choose smaller portions (or share restaurant portions) and go for water or low-fat mild instead of soda. 5.People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BIMs than people who eat breakfast. 6I.f you really put the above into practice at once, you will definitely reduce your weight gradually. Task One Summary Writing
Globalisation
In an article titled “Globalisation” by Abadon (2009), it explains that globalisation is a phenomenon that world economics are more connected in the aspects of trading goods, capital flow and information exchange. The author explores the benefits and adverse effects that globalisation brings.
Since 1955, world trade has grown fast because of the dramatic developments in transportation, information revolution and acceptance of free trade, which is basic for globalisation. With the help the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) over the past 50 years, many countries have profited from promoting the free trade principles. Nations which implements open economic policy benefits more than those do not. And the results of trade differ from developed countries to least developed countries (LDC’s). Developed countries receive high growth from free trade while LDC’s have been left behind over the last fifty years. The reason for this can be subsidies of agricultural products and LDC’s dependent economics.
Like flowing of goods, capital runs freely around the globe which consists another part of globalisation. It was in the 1980’s and 1990’s that free money flowing was involved into controversy. Quick and extreme solutions implemented by governments or inflicted
by organizations were promoted because they are thought to increase money flow. Globalisation was criticized for regions like Eastern Europe and Latin America has lower GDP after opening markets. In addition, despite the fact that capital flows faster and more freely, once withdrew, it may cause severe results just like Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 and 1998.
Free flow of information, which moves cheaper and faster these days, is a part of globalisation as well. The benefits of developed information techniques are new job opportunities and new ways of producing. In contrast, the numbers of unemployment in agriculture and manufacture has become larger. Moreover, high speed of information flow leads to panic among investors which may results in financial crises.
Above all, free trade, funds floating and unblocked communication form globalisation. Adaptive, cooperative approaches should be applied to keep track of this highly globalized world.
