AThere are dozens of movie recommendation engines on the Web. They're all different, but some are definitely better than others.Rotten TomatoesInstead of telling Rotten Tomatoes which films you like, you can tell it what kind of films you enjoy, which actors you want to see, and other standards to help it find the best movie for you. There's a lot of variability in the quality of Rotten Tomatoes recommendations but it's also a nice way to find the right film for any mood.NetflixNetflix asks you to rate (划分等级) movies to determine which films you'll want to see next. And although it does make it easy to rate movies and it does return huge lists, the ideas it gives you aren't all that strong. It's easy to use, but it's not the best way to get movie recommendations.JinniWhether you want to search for films based on your mood, time available, or reviews, the site has it all. But Jinni's most amazing feature is its semantic (语义的) search. You can enter a term like “films that show Chris Farley yelling” and the site will return films that match your question. Go to use Jinni. You won't regret it!CritickerInstead of just allowing you to rank films, Criticker compares your ratings to those of other users and see how closely your tastes match those of other users. Once the service finds matches, you can view these users' lists and see which movies they like.1.Which one does the author recommend most?A.Rotten Tomatoes. B.Netflix.C.Jinni. D.Criticker.2.What makes Criticker special?A.Comparing users' ratings.B.Ranking your favourite films.C.Offering different standards.D.Finding films based on mood.3.What is the purpose of the text?A.To recommend the best online movies.B.To show how to use movie search engines.C.To introduce several movie search engines.D.To explain how to find the best online moviesB“If y ou are cold, it will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; if you are depressed, it will cheer you; if you are exhausted, it will calm you.” 1)The poem best identifies the passion for tea in Britain. 4)Outside of the United Kingdom, many people refer to afternoon tea as “high tea”. Afternoon tea, also known as low tea, is what most people think of when they hear “high tea”. It involves things like manners, lace (蕾丝) and light meals such as cookies and finger sandwiches. It is typically served in the midafternoon and it wastraditionally served on low tables, hence its two names.A fternoon tea was started in the mid1800s by the Duchess of Bedford. Around that time,2)kerosene (煤油) lamps were introduced into wealthier homes and eating a late dinner (around 8 or 9 p.m.) became fashionable. This increasingly late dinner was one of the only two meals each day, and the other was a midmorning one. The story goes that the Duchess found herself with a “sinking feeling”. This came from hunger during the long wait between meals. She decided to invite friends over for various snacks and tea. The idea of an afternoon tea gathering spread across high society and 3)became a favorite pastime of females for leisure. Later, it spread to other social groups. However, the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had a meal about midday, and a meal after work, between five and seven o'clock. This meal was called “high tea” or just “tea”. Traditionally eaten early evening, high tea was a substantial(内容充实的)meal that combined delicious sweet food, such as cookies, cakes or tea bread, with heavy food, such as cheese on toast, cold meats and poached eggs on toast. This meal is now often replaced with a supper due to people eating their main meal in the evening rather than at midday. 4.What is the author's purpose of using a poem at the beginning of the passage?A.To introduce a topic.B.To present a puzzle.C.To describe the phenomenon.D.To clarify his writing purpose.5.What led to the appearance of afternoon tea?A.Kerosene lamps were used at home.B.Upper class had more free time.C.Drinking tea makes people feel good.D.Duchess of Bedford was influential in social circle.6.What was the most important feature of afternoon tea in the mid1800s?A.Simple food and tea.B.A ladies' social occasion.C.Being served on low tables.D.Serving time.7.What is the best title for the text?A.A Good TraditionB.Ways of Low TeaC.Traditional Afternoon TeaD.High Tea and Low TeaCSports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment. Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas. There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes, and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control. Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”.They are better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.8. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?A. Playing basketball in a gym.B. Motor racing in the desert.C. Cycling around a lake.D. Swimming in a sports center.9. What do we know about golf from the passage?A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.B. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.D. It causes water shortages around the world.10. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _______.A. it uses fewer resourcesB. it improves our healthC. it is an outdoor sportD. it is recommended by experts11. The author writes the passage to _______.A. show us the function of major sportsB. encourage us to go in for green sportsC. discuss the major influence of popular sportsD. introduce different types of environment-friendly sportsDInside Out is one of my favorite Disney movies. The story is about a young girl named Riley who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco with her family and how she deals with her emotions through the move. These five emotions in Riley's brain are Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust (厌恶) and Sadness. These emotions play a very important role in her life. I can relate because I am an 11-year-old girl and I am very in touch with my emotions and pre-teen feelings. The film is extremely beautiful and you couldn't ask for better direction from Pete Doctor. The use of the right colors for the characters is great. For example, Joy is yellow, Sadness is blue, Disgust is green, Fear is purple and Anger of course is red. Sadness plays a main role in the story and it makes me wonder why we are told not to be sad. I think it's important to be sad when the time comes. The end of the movie pretty much got me and the whole audience (families, couples and even elderly people) in tears and I cried very hard.I recommend this movie for anyone from 8 to 18 because it has enough joy in it for younger kids to like it even though it does have some sad moments. I believe that adults will like it too. And I give it 4 out of 5 stars because it connects to an older audience even though it is designed for a younger audience. I think younger children can see this, but a parent would have to explain some things to them after the movie.12. The author feels connected with the movie because she and the character Riley ______.A. enjoy the same movieB. have the same feelingsC. have the same move experienceD. have a similar family background13. What does the author think of Pete Doctor's job?A. Bad.B. Just so-so.C. Wonderful.D. Disappointing.14. After seeing the movie, the author has a new understanding of ______.A. fearB. sadnessC. angerD. joy15. In the author's eyes, the movie ______.A. won't attract people over 18B. is really unsuitable for childrenC. will be popular among kids and adultsD. can easily be understood by younger kids第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

So he spent two months living in a rural community in Uganda, regularly trekking (长途跋涉) with a group of kids who walked five miles each day round trip for their education. He deeply felt the hardships of this journey to school. The experience resulted in more than that planned research paper. He founded a nonprofit The Walking School Bus, dedicated to improving access to education, and he started a crowdfunding campaign to publish this children’s book he wrote with the same title.Set in South Africa, his story follows siblings Shaka and Nandi. Their father works far away and their mother’s work keeps her in their village. So the kids have no one to walk them to school. The trip is long and dangerous for just two kids. They find inspiration from a toy school bus in the sand. They finally succeed when they realize they can find safety in numbers with otherkids and form a walking school bus.Over the past few years, the nonprofit took off. The book, however, never made it into print until this year. That original text was an unwieldy 128 pages when Friedland brought it to the publisher Greystone Books. “They said, ‘It’s a great idea, but no,’” explains Friedland, who needed to figure out how to rewrite it in a more accessible format. A solution emerged when he connected with Ndileka Mandela. The story resonated with her, and they joined forces on a new version.I wondered what kids who have an easy commute to school would think of this book. I asked my 8-year-old American daughter — who only needs to walk 10 minutes to her elementary school — to read it. Her reaction: “Kids can be very imaginative and creative, and sometimes you just need more people to be able to get where you want to go. Those kids were really willing to go out of their way to get some education.”4.What did Friedland want to figure out initially?A.How the distance to school impacted attendance rates.B.How the students in rural community attended school.C.How the school responded to increasing dropout rate.D.How the program helped to improve access to education.5.Which of the following best describe Friedland?A.Suspicious and honest.B.Curious and devoted.C.Brave and sympathetic.D.Caring and determined.6.What does the underlined word “resonated” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Boost confidence.B.Arouse sympathy.C.Break new ground.D.Earn reputation.7.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To raise the awareness of education.B.To introduce a children’s book.C.To encourage kids to walk together.D.To share an unforgettable experience.Over a hundred years after it sank near Antarctica, the ship of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton has been found using underwater robots. In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his 27 members left England in a wooden sailing ship calledthe Endurance. Shackleton hoped to become the first to cross Antarctica. But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped in the thick ice over the Weddell Sea. The ice broke the Endurance and later sank it. Then the ship’s captain kept accurate records of the ship’s position, and the ship’s photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found. On Wednesday, a search team called “Endurance 22” announced it had located the ship. The Endurance was found 3 kilometers below the ocean’s surface, about 6 kilometers south of its last known position. According to the Endurance 22 team’s report, the name can be clearly read on the back of the ship, and its wheel looks ready to be turned.Though the ship is made of wood, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small organisms(微生物) that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in the cold waters around Antarctica. The team ran the project from an ice-breaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths. The robots could travel by themselves under the ice and go where the ship could not. For the last two weeks, the Sabertooth robots have been searching the sea floor in a 390-square kilometer area. The robots were looking for anything above the sea floor. Last Saturday, the ship was found. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used high-quality cameras to record the Endurance in detail. Antarctica’s waters are protected by an international agreement, which means the ship can’t be disturbed. So the Endurance 22 team plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck(失事) site. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.8.Why did the Endurance 22 team know the ship5s possible position?A.They had first-class robots.B.The captain kept a good record.C.Polar explorers recalled the details.D.The icy waters of the ship have changed. 9.What is the Endurance found to be like?A.It is in excellent shape.B.It is trapped in hard ice.C.It is in poor condition.D.It has gone beyond recognition.10.What plays the most important role in finding the Endurance?A.Luck.B.Patience.C.Weather.D.Technology. 11.What is the best title for the text?A.“Endurance 22” Announced a Great DiscoveryB.A Polar Explorers’ Ship Found After Over 100 YearsC.Untold Finding of Antarctic Explorer Ernest ShackletonD.New Results of the Sabertooth Robots’ Underwater SearchThe mass death of flying foxes in extreme heat in North Queensland last month underlines the importance of University of Queensland wildlife research released today. The UQ research sheds light on how various species have responded to major climate events.A study led by UQ School of Earth and Environmental Science researcher Dr Sean Maxwell has spent more than 70 years recording the responses of various species.“The growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as cyclones, droughts and floods is causing unpredictable and immediate changes to ecosystems and blocking existing management efforts,” Dr Maxwell said. “Some of the negative responses we recorded were quite concerning, including more than 100 cases of dramatic population declines and 31 cases of local population extinction following an extreme event.”“Critically endangered bird species in Hawaii, such as the palia, have been annihilated due to drought, leaving none of its kind, and lizard species have been wiped out due to cyclones in the Bahamas.”Cyclones were the most common extreme event for birds, fish, plants and reptiles, while mammals and amphibians(两栖动物)were most responsive to drought events, with drought leading to 12 cases of major population decline in mammals. Drought also led to 13 cases of breeding declines in bird populations and 12 cases of changes in the composition of invertebrate(无脊椎动物)communities.UQ Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science director Professor James Watson said the detailed information would help affect ecosystem management.“The research clearly shows species will respond, often negatively, to extreme events,” Professor Watson said. “As climate change continues to ensure extreme climate and weather events are more and more common, we now need to act to ensure species have the best chance to survive. Wherever possible, high quality and complete habitat areas should be preserved, as these are the places where species are most resilient(易恢复的)to increasing exposure to extremeevents.”12.How was the UQ research conducted?A.By observing extreme weather events.B.By protecting the endangered species.C.By recording reactions of animals to extreme climate.D.By analyzing the reason why mass animal death happened.13.What does the underlined word “annihilated” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.destroyed B.declined C.decreased D.distinct 14.Which of the following sentences is true about extreme weather events?A.Drought caused 13 cases of extinction in bird populations.B.Drought caused 12 cases of population decline in mammals.C.Birds and mammals are most responsive to cyclones.D.Cyclones wiped out populations of lizard.15.What is the best title of the passage?A.UQ Wildlife ResearchB.Extreme Weather Events are ThreateningC.Ecosystem Management CountsD.Negative Responses to extreme weather eventsWhat’s the use of language? Why does the human race learn to speak, write, and sign?16 Certainly the primary purpose of language is for communication. We use language to communicate our ideas and opinions to each other. We use it to tell others our thoughts. Sometimes we tell the truth. Sometimes we tell lies. But in all these cases, the basic aim is clear: to get the ideas in our head into someone else’s head. 17 But there are several other uses of language where the basic aim has nothing to do with communicating ideas.18 Earlier in the book, I talked about accents and dialects. These tell people who we are and where we come from. In both ways we express our identities. Here’s another use of language: to express our emotions. Imagine you’re hammering a nail into a piece of wood, but something goes wrong and you hit your finger instead. What will come out of your mouth? 19 But quite a few would shout, “Stupid hammer!” as if it was thehammer’s fault. What sort of language is this? The hammer doesn’t have a brain, so it can’t possibly understand us. So what are we doing? Actually, we just want to get rid of our nervous energy. By shouting at the hammer, we feel a bit better. We also use language to avoid embarrassment and get on with other people. Imagine people sometimes say such things as “Looks like rain” or “Lovely day” when they meet each other. They don’t want to start a proper conversation, but they feel it would be rude to pass by in silence.20A.Therefore, they make a comment on the weather.B.One of these uses of language is to express identity.C.Of course, if you’re very brave you might not say anything.D.It shows that we’re getting on well with the people we’re talking to.E.And for that to happen, we must speak them, write them, or sign them.F.We might think the answer is very simple: to communicate with each other.G.Rather a large number of people, I suspect, would shout out something bad.二、完形填空When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly shot me down. “I’m not 21 , so stop trying to get me to do sports,” Julianna said. I suggested it because some of my recent happiest memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to 22 some of her growing teen worries on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always met with 23 .Still, I was undiscouraged. I was convinced that 24 some physical energy would help Julianna. I’ve seen how sports help deal with stress. It 25 for me when I was a teenage girl.Midway through summer, we stayed at home one afternoon, really bored. “Do you want to play tennis?” I asked. “Sure,” she said. Arriving at the 26 , we set down our bags, picked up our rackets (球拍), and 27 towards our sides of the court. The net felt like the visual representation of a growing 28 between us — I desiring a connection and my teenage daughter longing for independence.I started by hitting a ball over the net, and Julianna took a big swing and 29 . We repeated this several more times. I resisted the 30 to tell her she was 31 the racket too close to the neck or to step more into her forehand. We just repeated the 32 of me hitting the ball and her missing it a few times before she finally got it back over the net. “This is fun,” she said with a mixture of surprise and joy and then she smiled 33 .Now we always find time to play tennis. Therefore, I rarely focused on algebra. Nobody told me that if you keep trying and trying, one day a difficult task will seem easy.Actually, I learnt this from my young daughter, Samaya. One day, I was finishing some paperwork and I said, “Oh no, how could I have made that mistake!” Samaya instantly said, “Mum, don't worry. Mistakes make your brain grow bigger.”Actually, we all need to be reminded that mistakes or failures are just fine and that they are a huge part of growth and success. However, the regular belief is the opposite. We must correct this with our children. We must encourage them to make mistakes because that means they are trying out new ideas.Billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of the shapewear business Spanx, has seen many failures. She made a living by selling fax machines for seven years. Knocking on many doors and making a lot of mistakes was a journey she calls educational. Sara Blakely owes her risk-taking skills to the weekend talk she had with her father. As a child, her father would ask her the same question every weekend. "What did you fail at this week, Sara?" He did not care how high her scores were. He wanted to know what she had tried but failed at. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five. He was reprogramming her mind to believe that mistakes and failures are fine.So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail at this week?”1. It was an immediate success, attracting more than 1,200 undergraduate enrollees (报名者) the first term before it was transformed into the most popular online course in Yale’s history. Now the course is being offered for free to more than 550 low-income high school students across the United States. You do not need to stop creating because you’ve gotten older. Creativity customers as young as 40 have asked me. “Am I too old to create?” I encourage them to imagine what it might be like to reach their 80s after decades of devotion to their chosen art form. How skilled and confident might they be? The following tips will help you say a “yes” to your creativity, even as you accept the realities of aging.Build your group of like-minded souls, which encourages you and, gives you honest and helpful feedback. Take charge of your health. If you have physical issues, consider them, but continue to create. Change the length and frequency of your work, or move from one art from to another-whatever makes sense for your changing circumstances. Ask yourself why you create. Is it because it fills you with joy and gives you purpose? Really, creating regularly can embed (嵌入) the habit of creating right down into your bones. No period of daily time is too short to stay conn cc ted with your creativity. Keep your current and future projects in your thoughts all day, like background music, which keeps them alive! It also keeps you enthusiastic and brings you back to your creativity after a forced interruption. Finally, don’t lose yourself in comparisons with other artists. You’re on your own path, and it is like no one else’s.In his 80s, Nova Scotia visual artist Charles Coupar completed 15 pastel still lifes (粉彩静物画) for a personal exhibition and s pet over an hour on his opening night chatting with fans and new admirers. American poet, novelist and journal writer May Sarton continued to write into her 80s. She retained her independence and devotion to creativity until the end, even dictating her journal into a tape recorder after suffering a serious disease Countless other art its, poets, musicians and performers can inspire you to continue taking creative-risks and to build your life’s work.If you develop it, creativity will remain a brightly burning fame in ide you, calling on you to make something wonderful, though you are in your eighties.1. How to support your friends when they are downOne of the greatest things about having friends is that they can be there for you when you’re feeling down. 1 Here’s how to be a good friend when you’re needed.2 Therefore, you’ll be able to tell what your friend is upset about, and thus avoid awkward ly sitting with no idea what is going on or what to say. It will also give you an advantage because it’ll make it easier for you to know what are the right and wrong statements to make.Be an active listener. When your friends pause and look to you for a response, repeat what they just said. 3Give your friend a hug, whether he or she shared anything with you or not. 4 You could also pat (轻拍) him or her gently on the shoulder or back.Don’t use this as an opportunity to talk about yourself and your own problems. 5 There is nothing worse than one person adding to the woes (悲痛) by trying to outcompete with the other’s own woes. Drop it and be empathetic (同情的) in more constructive ways.6. AOn Sunday morning, after listening to a sermon(布道) about making “A World of Difference”, we stopped at the gas station for a snack and drinks. When we pulled in to the parking lot we noticed a young girl sitting on the road. She was outside in January , in the Midwest, with only a sweatshirt. No coat or gloves. She didn’t look very happy.I approached her and asked if she was okay. She said yes and told me that she had run out of gas down the road, walked to the gas station, and was now waiting for someone to bring her a gas can and a little money so she could get her car running again. By the look on her face I thought she had been waiting for a while.I,hesitantly, asked if we could give her a lift somewhere . I was fearful that she might be worried about our intentions. She graciously(有礼貌地) refused and said she would simply wait.I went inside the gas stati on to pick up the items we had come for, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the young girl sitting outside in the cold and wished I could do something to help her. So I bought a gift certificate for her. With it she could either buy the gasoline she said she needed or she could at least go inside and purchase a drink and some food to keep her warm while she waited for someone to come to get her.She was so surprised when I handed her the gift certificate.Walking away I got the feeling that help didn’t come her way very often. She was very thankful for the gift certificate --- but I thought it did just as much to lift my spirits as it did hers!21. Why did the young girl wait on the road?A. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive,it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work.It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship-knowing the right thing to say, when to say it,how to say it,and accepting some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friends that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friends come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise(妥协)at times are essential. As relationships last longer, you may also discover things about you and your friends that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relationship.Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me,I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.25. The underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 1 probably meansA. upsettingB. surprisingC. funnyD. helpless26. To communicate well with people, you should know thatA. your friends need to have the same backgrounds with youB. compromises are essential at any timeC. a white lie is necessary sometimesD. supporting each other in anything helps build a good relationship27. According to the text, which of the following are important for a good relationship'?a. communicationb. supportc. hidden selvesd. loveA. abdB. acdC. bcdD. abc28. What would be the best title for the text ?A. The importance to express disagreementsB. Forbidden rules in building good relationshipsC. Different opinions on good relationshipsD. Keys to making relationships workCSpeaking two languages can actually help offset(抵消) some effects of aging on the brain, a new study has found.Researchers tested how long it took participants to switch from one cognitive(认知的)task to another, something that's known to take longer for older adults, said the lead researcher, Brian Gold,a neuroscientist at the University of Kentucky.Gold's team compared task-switching speeds for younger and older adults, knowing they would find slower speeds in the older population because of previous studies. However, they found older adults speaking two languages were able to switch mental activities faster than those who didn't. The study only looked at lifelong bilinguals(会说两种语言的人),defined in the study as peoplespeaking a second language daily since they were at least 10 years old.First,Gold and his team asked 30 people, either bilingual or monolingual,to look at a series of colored shapes and respond with the name of each shape by pushing a button. Then, they presented the participants with a similar series of colored shapes and asked them to respond with what colors the shapes were by pushing a button. Finally, they presented participants with a series of colored shapes, but they mixed prompts(提词) for either a shape or a color to test participants' task-switching time. The bilingual people were able to respond faster to the moving prompts. Researchers found bilingual people~not only able to switch tasks faster一they had different brain activities compared with their monolingual peers.Krishna called bilingualism a ”beautiful natural experiment",because people grow up speaking two languages, and studies have shown that they get certain cognitive benefits from switching between languages and determining which to respond with based on what's going on around them.Gold said he grew up in Montreal, where he spoke French at school and English at home, prompting relatives to question whether his French language attention would somehow stop his ability to learn English.“Until recently, learning a second language in childhood was thought of as dangerous,”he said, “Actually, it's beneficial.”29. Krishna called bilingualism a ”beautiful natural experiment" becauseA. people speaking two languages are beautifulB. people speaking two languages are naturalC. people speaking two languages like the experimentD. people grow up, benefiting from speaking two languages30. Gold's relatives were puzzled when he spoke French at school and English at home becauseA. they thought it would affect his progressB. they thought it would be of little help to himC. they were afraid that learning French would affect his English learningD. they thought that French was useless31. What's the main idea of the passage?A. Researchers found bilingual people respond slowly.B. Researchers found bilinguals can slow down the speed of aging on the brain and respond fast.C. Researchers found bilinguals are great.D. Researchers found speaking two languages is very important.32. We can learn from the last paragraph that learning a second language in childhood isA. not beneficial to childrenB. dangerous but beneficial to childrenC. not dangerous but beneficial to childrenD. dangerous to childrenDJanelle was running late for work, so she just had time for a quick look at herself in the mirror as she was going out. What she saw there made her stop dead in her tracks.Being a busy college student just one year removed from her teenage years, sh e wasn’t exactly obsessive-compulsive(有强迫观念和行为的) about the neatness of her clothes. But her boss at the restaurant where she works saw things a little differently. He had recently lectured the entire staff on the importance of appearance, and had specifically mentioned the need for servers to wear clean, unwrinkled blouses. As an assistant manager, Janelle felt it was important to set an example for the other employees. But if she stopped to iron the blouse normally, she would be late —and work without delay was an area of even greater concern to her boss.So she grabbed her iron and plugged it in and set it for low heat. Carefully holding her blouse away from her body, she continued to iron it while she was wearing it. It seemed like a logical answer to an urgent problem. And it seemed to be working until Janelle tried to iron the collar and accidentally ironed her neck by mistake. Then it suddenly seemed like a really stupid idea and a really painful one as well. It took more time to treat her burn than it would have taken to iron her shirt properly. And she spent a miserable shift dealing with the pain of the burn. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? For me it was cutting my own hair. For a former roommate it was trying to pull his own wisdom teeth. For another college acquaintance, it was trying to change the oil in his car while the motor was still running.“There’s a right way and a wrong way of doing things,” Dad used to tell me whenever I’d spoil the look of our yard by trying out a faster, easier and more creative way of pulling weeds or edging the lawn. “If a thing is worth doing,” he said, “it’s worth doing it right.” There’s a reason why certain things are done in certain ways. Those old, boring, predictable ways work.33.It’s learned from Paragraph 2 that______________.A.Jenelle had no sense of responsibility at workB.Jenelle failed to set an example for employees in daily workC.Jenelle’s boss put doing something on time above appearanceD.Jenelle didn’t care about the neatness of her clothes at all34.What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?A.We all have tried to iron clothes while we are wearing them.B.We are careful enough in daily life.C.We all have done something creative.D.We all have done loads of things like Janelle.35.What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph ?A.Be creative. B.Do things right.C.Stick to old ways. D.A bad beginning makes a bad ending.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. AFood Festivals Around the WorldStilton Cheese RollingMay Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors’ lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.Fiery Foods Festival — The Hottest Festival on EarthEvery year more than 10, 000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction-food that is not just spicy(辛辣的), but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper — officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing’s for sure-if you don’t like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn’t for you!La Tomatina —The World’s Biggest Food FightOn the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina-the world’s largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week’s events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes — official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50, 000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again — and for a much-needed wash!21. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must _____________.A. kick or throw their cheeseB. wear various formal clothesC. roll a wooden cheese in their own laneD. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos22. But for Melody, it looked so unique because of the classmate who graduated alongside her — her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond. They both went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and graduated together.Pat took her first college class 42 years ago. After one semester, she dropped out to move to Chattanooga, where she spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family. While she did take an occasional class at UTC, she says her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree, especially after she retired. She agreed when her granddaughter decided to move to study psychology at UTC after a year at Berea College. They both entered UTC with enough college credits to make graduating together a possibility.Pat and Melody graduated on November 20 as part of UTC’s 2020 class. The achievement has also made Pat somewhat of a celebrity.“We are so proud to have graduates like Melody and her grandmother, Pat Ormond, in the UTC class of 2020,” said Steven, UTC Chancellor. “Together, they personify the determination, commitment and love for lifelong learning we encourage in every UTC graduate.”Pat hopes that she can be an example to other non-traditional college students who want to get their degrees. “Learning never stops,” Pat said. “That’s something that my father taught me when I was young. No matter what you do, learning never stops.” Pat isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. She’s already working on another degree-a bachelor’s degree in history.Meanwhile, her granddaughter, who is hunting jobs, is interested in getting a master’s degree in clinical psychology so she can become a lawyer. As a popular sport at the Winter Olympics, ski jumping is one of the best examples to show the “superhuman” power of athletes.Ski jumpers soar into the air and appear to be almost flying in the sky. How do they achieve this? Physics can offer us an explanation of how they achieve this goal. It involves the application of the laws of aerodynamics(空气动力学) to fight against gravity and increase lift while reducing drag.To understand how ski jumping works, we need to consider three elements: gravity, lift and drag. Gravity is the force that pulls us towards an object, such as the Earth. Lift occurs when an object is moving through the air — as its surface comes into contact with air particles(微粒), the particles are pushed down and away from the object, allowing it to move up. At the same time, this interaction creates drag, or resistance, and slows down an object’s movement. While there is nothing that the skiers can do about gravity, they can twist their bodies into positions that allow them to achieve greater lift and avoid as much drag as possible. According to the Smithsonian Magazine,” to do this, athletes align(调整) their skis and body nearly parallel(平行的) to the ground and place their skis in a V-shape just outside the form of the body. This position increases the surface area that generates lift and puts them in the ideal angle of attack(迎角) that will also maximize lift.”Because of how the sport works, athletes’ equipment is strictly controlled according to weight and height in order to avoid any unfair advantages. This means suits must be tight in order to ensure athletes cannot use them as a way to gain more lift. For athletes, minor day-to-day water weight changes as little as 300 grams. It can mean that suits will not be tight enough according to their body mass indexes.28. What contributes to lift in ski jumping?A. The force of gravity.B. The upward force of air.C. The interaction between athletes and air particles.D. The interaction between air particles.29. Which of the following is NOT a technique used by ski jumpers in order to achieve the best performance?A. Keep their bodies parallel to the ground.B. Maximize the angle of attack.C. Keep their skis aligned with the ground.D. Position their skis in a V-shape when they jump.30. What rule is adopted to ensure fair play in ski jumping?A. Equipment must match an athlete’s weight and height.B. Athletes must strictly control their weight.C. Athletes are grouped according to their body mass indexes.D. Standardized equipment is used to avoid unfair advantages.31. What’s the main idea of the article?A. The techniques used by ski jumpers.B. Some rules of the ski jumping competition.C. The scientific principles behind ski jumping.D. How the laws of aerodynamics work in sports.DWe all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be tech-savvy(精通技术的). However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “ When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to exert their independence.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.32. Many parents teach themselves social networks because _____________.A. they are not content with their daily lifeB. they regard social networks importantC. they are curious to explore new technologiesD. they want to view their children’s online activities33. What might be the reason for teens to reject their parents’ request?A. They can’t choose friends around them.B. They have nothing to hide.C. They don’t want to teach their parents.D. Their privacy can not be guaranteed if so.34. A recent survey suggested that _____________.A. teens value their privacy and independenceB. a teen’s rejection means they have something to hideC. a teen’s rejection means nothing specialD. independence is everything teens desire35. What is most likely to be talked about next?A. How to bridge the generation gap.B. How to make friends on social networks.C. How to explain to parents about the rejection.D. How to use the social networking sites.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

You can read, speak and understand. But there is another kind of language you need to know -- the language of the body, a part of what is called non-verbal communication. All over the world, people “talk” with their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they put their hands together. What do American and British do?Americans are more informal than the British. They like to be friendly. They use first names, they ask questions and they talk easily about themselves.
