Understanding drug use, drug abuse, and addictionPeople experiment with drugs for many different reasons. Many first try drugs out of curiosity, to have a good time, because friends are doing it, or in an effort to improve athletic performance or ease another problem, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. Use doesn’t automatically lead to abuse, and there is no specific level at which drug use moves from casual to problematic. It varies by individual. Drug abuse and addiction is less about the amount of substance consumed or the frequency, and more to do with the consequences of drug use. No matter how often or how little you’re consuming, if your drug use is causing problems in your life—at work, school, home, or in your relationships—you likely have a drug abuse or addiction problem. Why do some drug users become addicted, while others don’t?As with many other conditions and diseases, vulnerability to addiction differs from person to person. Your genes, mental health, family and social environment all play a role in addiction. Risk factors that increase your vulnerability include:∙Family history of addiction∙Abuse, neglect, or other traumatic experiences in childhood∙Mental disorders such as depression and anxiety∙Early use of drugs∙Method of administration—smoking or injecting a drug may increase its addictive potentialDrug addiction and the brainLearn more about how addiction hijacks the brain.Read Article by Harvard Health PublicationsAddiction is a complex disorder characterized by compulsive drug use. While each drug produces different physical effects, all abusedsubstances share one thing in common: repeated use can alter the way the brain looks and functions.∙Taking a recreational drug causes a surge in levels of dopamine in your brain, which trigger feelings of pleasure. Your brainremembers these feelings and wants them repeated.∙If you become addicted, the substance takes on the same significance as other survival behaviors, such as eating and drinking.∙Changes in your brain interfere with your ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control your behavior, and feel normalwithout drugs.∙Whether you’re addicted to inhalants, heroin, Xanax, speed, or Vicodin, the uncontrollable craving to use grows more important than anything else, including family, friends, career, and even your own health and happiness.∙The urge to use is so strong that your mind finds many ways to deny or rationalize the addiction. You may drastically underestimate the quantity of drugs you’re taking, how much it impacts your life, and the level of control you have over your drug use.How drug abuse and addiction can developLearn how drugs block emotionsWatch a 3 -min. video: Roadblocks to awarenessPeople who experiment with drugs continue to use them because the substance either makes them feel good, or stops them from feeling bad. In many cases, however, there is a fine line between regular use and drug abuse and addiction. Very few addicts are able to recognize when they have crossed that line. While frequency or the amount of drugs consumed don’t in themselves constitute drug abuse or addiction, they can often be indicators of drug-related problems.∙Problems can sometimes sneak up on you, as your drug use gradually increases over time. Smoking a joint with friends at the weekend, or taking ecstasy at a rave, or cocaine at an occasional party, for example, can change to using drugs a couple of days a week, then every day. Gradually, getting and using the drug becomes more and more important to you.∙If the drug fulfills a valuable need, you may find yourself increasingly relying on it. For example, you may take drugs to calm you if you feel anxious or stressed, energize you if you feeldepressed, or make you more confident in social situations if you normally feel shy. Or you may have started using prescription drugs to cope with panic attacks or relieve chronic pain, for example.Until you find alternative, healthier methods for overcoming these problems, your drug use will likely continue.∙Similarly, if you use drugs to fill a void in your life, you’re more at risk of crossing the line from casual use to drug abuse and addiction. To maintain healthy balance in your life, you need to have other positive experiences, to feel good in your life aside from any drug use.∙As drug abuse takes hold, you may miss or frequently be late for work or school, your job performance may progressively deteriorate, and you start to neglect social or family obligations. Your ability to stop using is eventually compromised. What began as a voluntary choice has turned into a physical and psychological need. The good news is that with the right treatment and support, you can counteract the disruptive effects of drug use and regain control of your life. The first obstacle is to recognize and admit you have a problem, or listen to loved ones who are often better able to see the negative effects drug use is having on your life.5 Myths about Drug Abuse and AddictionMYTH 1: Overcoming addiction is a simply a matter of willpower. You can stop using drugs if you really want to. Prolonged exposure to drugs alters the brain in ways that result in powerful cravings and a compulsion to use. These brain changes make it extremely difficult to quit by sheer force of will.MYTH 2: Addiction is a disease; there’s nothing you can do about it. Most experts agree that addiction is a brain disease, but that doesn’t mean you’re a helpless victim. The brain changes associated with addiction can be treated and reversed through therapy, medication, exercise, and other treatments.MYTH 3: Addicts have to hit rock bottom before they can get better. Recovery can begin at any point in the addiction process—and the earlier, the better. The longer drug abuse continues, the stronger the addiction becomes and the harder it is to treat. Don’t wait to intervene until the addict has lost it all.MYTH 4: You can’t force someone into treatment; they have to want help. Treatment doesn’t have to be voluntary to be successful. People w ho arepressured into treatment by their family, employer, or the legal system are just as likely to benefit as those who choose to enter treatment on their own. As they sober up and their thinking clears, many formerly resistant addicts decide they want to change.MYTH 5: Treatment didn’t work before, so there’s no point trying again. Recovery from drug addiction is a long process that often involves setbacks. Relapse doesn’t mean that treatment has failed or that you’re a lost cause. Rather, it’s a signal to get back on track, either by going back to treatment or adjusting the treatment approach.Signs and symptoms of drug abuse and drug addictionAlthough different drugs have different physical effects, the symptoms of addiction are similar. See if you recognize yourself in the following signs and symptoms of substance abuse and addiction. If so, consider talking to someone about your drug use.Common signs and symptoms of drug abuse∙You’re neglecting your responsibilities at school, work, or home(e.g. flunking classes, skipping work, neglecting your children)because of your drug use.∙You’re using drugs under dangerous conditions or taking risks while high, such as driving while on drugs, using dirty needles, or having unprotected sex.∙Your drug use is getting you into legal trouble, such as arrests for disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, or stealing to support a drug habit.∙Your drug use is causing problems in your relationships, such as fights with your partner or family members, an unhappy boss, or the loss of old friends.Common signs and symptoms of drug addiction∙You’ve built up a drug tolerance. You need to use more of the drug to experience the same effects you used to attain with smalleramounts.∙You take drugs to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms. If you go too long without drugs, you experience symptoms such as nausea, restlessness, insomnia, depression, sweating, shaking, andanxiety.∙You’ve lost control over your drug use. You often do drugs or use more than you planned, e ven though you told yourself you wouldn’t.You may want to stop using, but you feel powerless.∙Your life revolves around drug use. You spend a lot of time using and thinking about drugs, figuring out how to get them, andrecovering from the drug’s effects.∙You’ve abandoned activities you used to enjoy, such as hobbies, sports, and socializing, because of your drug use.∙You continue to use drugs, despite knowing it’s hurting you. It’s causing major problems in your life—blackouts, infections, mood swings, depression, paranoia—but you use anyway.Warning signs that a friend or family member is abusing drugsDrug abusers often try to conceal their symptoms and downplay their problem. If you’re worried that a friend or family member might be abusing drugs, look for the following warning signs:Physical warning signs of drug abuse∙Bloodshot eyes, pupils larger or smaller than usual.∙Changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Sudden weight loss or weight gain.∙Deterioration of physical appearance, personal grooming habits.∙Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing.∙Tremors, slurred speech, or impaired coordination.Behavioral signs of drug abuse∙Drop in attendance and performance at work or school.∙Unexplained need for money or financial problems. Risk of drug abuse also increases greatly during times oftransition, such as changing schools, moving, or divorce. The challenge for parents is to distinguish between the normal, often volatile, ups and downs of the teen years and the red flags of substance abuse. These include:∙Having bloodshot eyes or dilated pupils; using eye drops to try to mask these signs.∙Skipping class; declining grades; suddenly getting into trouble at school.∙Missing money, valuables, or prescriptions.∙Acting uncharacteristically isolated, withdrawn, angry, or depressed.∙Dropping one group of friends for another; being secretive about the new peer group.∙Loss of interest in old hobbies; lying about new interests and activities.∙Demanding more privacy; locking doors; avoiding eye contact;sneaking around.Getting help for drug abuse and drug addiction Finding help and support for drug addiction∙Visit a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in your area. Drug Abuse
Drug AbuseDrug AbuseDrug abuse in the United States has come to be regarded as one of the most challenging social problems facing the nation. Indeed, the word "drug" include strong emotions, and opinion poll since the late 1960s have shown that the "drug problem" perceived by most American as a major threat to our society, particularly to its younger members.More than a third of all American twelve and older have tried an illicit drug. Ninety percent of those who have used illegal drugs used marijuana or hashish. Approximately a third used cocaine or took a prescription type drug for nonmedical reasons. About a fifth used LSD. Fortunately, nearly sixty million American who used illicit drugs during youth, as adults reject these substances. The most dramatic increase in drug use has occurred since the 1960's, a time of radical change in political and social beliefs, lifestyles and mores. United States was involved in a failing war effort in Viet Nam and the youth of America were rebelling against traditional conservative values as well as the military draft. The idea that a new civilization could develop from altered states of awareness fit nicely into the counter-culture ideas of a new, youth-driven society. Traditional values, authorities, and restrictions on behavior were vehemently challenged. Psychoactive drugs and the breakdown of traditional taboos against using them became symbols of the rebellion against the established order.People of the United States come to recognize in the 1980's that they are paying a very high price for the casual attitude toward drugs that developed in the 1960's. After the war, these drugs became popular for truck drivers and those in weight control programs, but they soon were being used for their cocaine-like function and have become the most abused and addictive drug in many regions of society today. Though the government has taken measures to regulate the drug abuse, it is still remains as a serious social problem of United States.ⅡTrends in Youth Drug UseThe most alarming trend is the increasing use of illegal drugs, tobacco, and alcohol among youth. Children who use these substances increase the chance of acquiring life-long dependency problems. They also incur greater health risks. Every day, three thousand children begin smoking cigarettes regularly; as a result, a third of these youngster will have their lives shortened. According to a study conducted by Columbia University Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, children who smoke marijuana are eighty-five times more likely to use cocaine than peers who never tried marijuana. The use of illicit drugs among eighth graders is up 150 percent over the past five years. While alarmingly high, the prevalence of drug use among today's young people has not returned to near-epidemic levels of the late 1970s. The most important challenge for drug policy is to reverse these dangerous trends.Drug abuse in the United States is a social problem because it has a wide range of social costs.3.1 CrimeThere is a strong association between some forms of drug use and crime. Although there is no so directly to violence. Heroin addicts may need as much as 100 a day to support their habit, and most addicts find that they much steal in order to raise these sums. In addition, users of illegal drugs have to rely directly or indirectly on criminal networks that manufacture, smuggle, and distribute these drugs. The profit from this illegal commerce are vast and other criminal involve in the supply of heroin and, more recently, of cocaine.3.2 Traffic accidentsAlcohol use is directly responsible for tens of thousands of highway accidents and juries; the drug is blamed for half of the annual total of road traffic fatalities. Some 60%of all drivers fatally injured in auto accidents have a blood-alcohol concentration of over 0.05% ,a level that the National Safety Council considers sufficient to impair driving ability, and over 35% have a concentration of property damage and medical expenses due to alcohol-related automobile accidents totals about $1billion each year.3.3 Health problemsDrug dependence takes a significant toll in terms of personal health and safety. The heavy user of drugs is much more likely than a member of the general population to be killed or to commit suicide, either deliberately or accidentally. Nearly 40 percent of deaths connected with illegal drugs strike people between age thirty and thirty-nine, a group with elevated rates of chronic problems due to drug abuse. Overall rates are higher for men than for women, and for blacks than for whites. Alcoholics, for example, have a death rate nearly three times higher than that of the general e of heroin increases one's chances of premature death throughoverdose, infectious diseases such as hepatitis and Aids. AIDS is the fastest-growing cause of all illegal drug-related deaths. More than 33 percent of new AIDS cases affect injecting drug users and their sexual partners. Many drugs have severe and sometimes irreversible effects on mental as well as physical health. Drug dependence, too, may affect other areas of the individual's life, raging from the home to personal relationships with friends.3.4 Drug abuse burdens the workplaceSeventy-one percent of all illicit drug users aged eighteen and older (7.4 million adults) are employed, including 5.4 million full-time workers and 1.9 million part-time workers. Drug users decrease workplace productivity. An ongoing, nationwide study conducted by the U.S. Postal Service has compared the job performance of drug users versus non-users. Among drug users, absenteeism is 66 percent higher, health benefit utilization is 84 percent greater, disciplinary actions are 90 percent higher, and there is significantly higher employee turnover.3.5 Economic lossesThe costs of alcohol abuse alone total over $43billion a year in accidents, medical bill, lost production, and production, and so on. It is difficult, however, to estimate the total economic costs of drug use. One reasons is that there are many indirect costs society must pay to support drug-dependence persons. Treatment and control of drug abuse constitute a major drain on law-enforcement and other public resources. Chronic drug abusers, for example, may become unemployable and end up on the welfare rolls. By the mid-1970s, federal and state governments were spending over $1 billion per year on the treatment of various drug abusers. Another half billion dollars annually goes into processing drug users through the criminal justice system.Drug abuse is a serious international problem requiring multi-disciplinary prevention. The U.S. has continued to play a prominent role in establishing a unified hemispheric alliance that incorporates a global and multi-disciplinary perspective. The alliance will strengthen and promote citizen participation and strengthen organizational capacity, and create and support a multi disciplinary team of experts to assist participating countries in their demand reduction efforts.。

Drug Abuse>Drug Abuse Essay:Drugs are the new emerging trends in the world. Unit 7 Drug Abuse
Unit 7 Drug AbusePassage A Agony from EcstasyI hear a lot of people talking about Ecstasy, calling it a fun, harmless drug. All I can think is, "if they only knew."I grew up in a small, rural town in Pennsylvania. It's one of those places where everyone knows your name, what you did, what you ate and so on. I was a straight-A student and one of the popular kids, liked by all the different crowds. Drugs never played a part in my life. They were never a question - I was too involved and focused on other things.I always dreamed of moving to New York City to study acting and pursue a career in theater. My dream came true when my mom brought me to the city to attend acting school. As you can imagine, it was quite a change from home.I was exposed to new people, new ideas and a completely new way of life - a way of life that exposed me to drugs. Most of the people that I met in the acting school had already been doing drugs for years. I felt that by using drugs, I would become a part of their world and it would deepen my friendships with them to new levels. I tried pot, even a little cocaine, but it was Ecstasy that changed my life forever.I remember the feeling I had the first time I did Ecstasy: complete and utter bliss. I could feel the pulse of the universe. It was as if I had unlocked some sort of secret world; it was as if I'd found heaven. And I wondered how anything that made you feel so good could possibly be bad.As time went by, things changed. I graduated, and began to use drugs, especially Ecstasy, more frequently. As I did, I actually started to look down on those who did not. I surrounded myself only with those who did. I had gone from a girl who never used drugs to a woman who couldn't imagine life without them.In five months, I went from a person living somewhat responsibly while pursuing my dream to a person who didn't care about a thing - and the higher I got, the deeper I sank into a dark, lonely place. When I did sleep, I had nightmares and the shakes. I had pasty skin, a throbbing head and the beginnings of paranoia, but I ignored it all, thinking it was normal until the night I thought I was dying. On this night, I was sitting on the couch with my friends, watching a movie and feeling normal when suddenly, I felt as if I needed to jump out of my skin. Racing thoughts, horrible images and illusions crept through my mind. I thought I was seeing the devil, and I repeatedly asked my friends if I was dead. On top of all this, I felt as if I washaving a heart attack. Somehow, I managed to pick up the telephone and call my mom in the middle of the night, telling her to come get me. She did, pulling me out of my apartment the next morning.I didn't know who I was or where I was as my mom drove me back to my family's hospital in Pennsylvania. I spent most of the drive curled up in the back seat while my younger sister tried to keep me calm.I spent the next 14 days in the hospital in a state of extreme confusion. This is what Ecstasy gave me - but it didn't stop there. My doctors performed a scan of my brain. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the results. The scan showed several dark marks on the image of my brain, and my doctors told me those were areas - areas that carry out memory functions - where the activity of my brain had been changed in some way.Since I saw that scan, my life has been an uphill crawl.I hear people say Ecstasy is a harmless, happy drug. There's nothing happy about the way that "harmless" drug chipped away at my life. Ecstasy took my strength, my motivation, my dreams, my friends, my apartment, my money and most of all, my sanity.I worry about my future and my health every day. I have many mountains ahead of me, but I plan to keep climbing because I'm one of the lucky ones.I've been given a second chance, and that's not something that everyone gets.
