Unit 8 Romantic Stories

Unit 8 Romantic StoriesA True Love Story[1] Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning were both English poets. The story of how they met, fell in love, and married is one of the most famous love stories in history. This love story is famous for its purity, its poetry, and its passion. But most of all, it is famous because their romance took place primarily by mail. For the two years before they married, they wrote to each other almost every day.[2] Elizabeth Barrett lived a quiet life in the house of her father. She rarely left the house because she was very weak and sick with a lung disease. From childhood she spent her time reading, studying Greek, and writing poetry. Her poems were published and became popular both in England and in America. Eli zabeth’s father, Mr. Barrett, supported his daughter’s writing. However, he was very strict and also eccentric--- he refused to let any of his three daughters marry. He wanted them all to stay with him. When Elizabeth was thirty-seven, she still lived with her father and her two unmarried sisters. She had never married or even been in love. She lived in a dream world. She knew Robert Browning only by name. However, she read his poetry and admired it greatly. She even put his name in a poem that she wrote.[3] Robert Browning’s childhood was similar to Elizabeth’s. He studied Greek, read a great deal, and wrote poetry at a very young age. As a young adult, he continued to read and write, and struggled to publish his work. By the age of thirty, he was not yet married.[4] One day, Robert was reading some of Elizabeth’s poems. He admired her poetry very much. Suddenly, he saw his name in one of her poems. He was so surprised and pleased that he decided to write her a letter. The year was 1844.[5] With this letter, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning began a secret correspondence. They wrote to each other almost every day. At first, their letters were formal and impersonal. They discussed poetry and literature. Slowly, the letters became more personal. A friendship developed as they discovered their common interests and ideas. They read and criticized each other’s poetry and began to discuss their friendship. They seemed to be perfectly compatible, both intellectually and spiritually. After one year, Robert wrote to Elizabeth that he loved her. They still had never met each other.[6] Finally, Elizabeth and Robert arranged to meet while Elizabeth’s father was not in the house. They were nervous, and even shocked, to see each other face to face at last. They continued meeting and talking secretly once or twice a week for the next year. They also continued to write each other letters every day. Elizabeth wrote: “…You cannot guess what you are to me---you cannot---it is not possible… it is something to me betweendream and miracle.” Robert answered that he had never kept a journal before, but he had started one now. In it he wrote the date of every visit with her and how long it lasted. He even wrote the number of minutes they had been together and said that they added up to two full days in length.[7] Then, in September, 1846, in a secret marriage ceremony, Elizabeth Barrett became Elizabeth Barrett Browning. A week later, without telling Elizabeth’s father, the happy couple eloped to Italy. The shock was terrible for Mr. Barrett, but his anger could not diminish their happiness. In 1849, they succeeded in having a son. They lived in Italy, extremely happy, for fifteen years, until Elizabeth’s death in 1861.

We didn't know much about each other twenty years ago. We were guided by our intuition; you swept me off my feet. It was snowing when we got married at the Ahwahnee. Years passed, kids came, good times, hard times, but never bad times. Our love and respect has endured and grown. We've been through so much together and here we are right back where we started 20 years ago - older and wiser - with wrinkles on our faces and hearts. We now know many of life's joys, sufferings, secrets and wonders and we're still here together. My feet have never returned to the ground.【网友译文赏析】@Echo马潇筠:二十年前,未相知时。

Seven o'clock in the morning. My waking thoughts are all of thee. Yourportrait and the remembrance of last night's delirium have robbed my senses ofrepose. Sweet and incomparable Josephine, what an extraordinary influence youhave over my heart. Are you vexed? do I see you sad? are you ill at ease? Mysoul is broken with grief, and there is no rest for your lover. But is theremore for me when, delivering ourselves up to the deep feelings which master me,I breathe out upon your lips, upon your heart, a flame which burns me up—ah,it was this past night I realised that your portrait was not you. You start atnoon; I shall see you in three hours. Meanwhile, mio dolce amor, accept a thousand kisses, butgive me none, for they fire my blood.N. B.A Madame Beauharnais.。

Your image and the intoxicating pleasures of last night, allow my senses no rest.Sweet and matchless Josephine, how strangely you work upon my heart. Are you angry with me? Are you unhappy? Are you upset? My soul is broken with grief and my love for you forbids repose. But how can I rest any more, when I yield to the feeling that masters my inmost self, when I quaff from your lips and from your heart a scorching flame?Yes! One night has taught me how far your portrait falls short of yourself! You start at midday: in three hours I shall see you again.Till then, a thousand kisses, mio dolce amor! but give me none back for they set my blood on fire.I have your letter, my adorable love. It has filled my heart with joy... since I left you I have been sad all the time. My only happiness is near you. I go over endlessly in my thought of your kisses, your tears, your delicious jealousy. The charm of my wonderful Josephine kindles a living, blazi ng fire in-my heart and senses. When shall I be able to pass every minute near you, with nothing to do but to love you and nothing to think of but the pleasure of telling you of it and giving you p roof of it? I loved you some time ago; since then I feel that I love you a thousand times better. Ever since I have known you I adore you more every day. That proves how wrong is that saying of La Bruyere "Love comes all of a sudden. " Ah, let me see some of your faults; be less beautiful, l ess graceful, less tender, less good. But never be jealous and never shed tears. Y our tears send me out of my mind ... they set my very blood on fire. Believe me that it is utterly impossible for me to have a single thought that is not yours, a single fancy that is not submissive to your will. Rest well. Restore your health. Come back to me and then at any rate before we die we ought to be abl e to say: "We were happy for so very many days!" Millions of kisses even to your dog.[中文译文] 我收到了你的信,我祟拜的心上人。

Adieu ! Ah ! si tu m'aimes moins, tu ne m'auras jamais aimé.Je serais alors bien à plaindre.。

Love letterLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), one of history"s most famous and mysterious composers died at the age of 57 with one great secret. Upon his death, a love letter was found among his possessions. It was written to an unknown woman who Beethoven simply called his Immortal Beloved. You are suffering, you, my most precious one ---- I have noticed this very moment that letters have to be handed in very early, on Monday ---- or on Thursday ---- the only days when the mail coach goes from here to K. ---- You are suffering ---- Oh, where I am, you are with me ---- I will see to it that you and I, that I can live with you. What a life!!! As it is now!!! Without you ---- pursued by the wish to deserve just as little as I deserved it ----However much you love me ---- my love for you is even greater ---- but never conceal yourself from me ---- good night. Dear God ---- so near! So far! Is not our love truly founded in Heaven ---- and, what is more, as strongly cemented as the firmament of heaven?Even when I am in bed my thoughts rush to you, my immortal beloved, now and then joyfully, then again sadly, waiting to know whether Fate will hear our prayer ---- To face life I must live altogether with you or never see you.

My dearest love, as I ponder our relationship, I am reminded of the love story between Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Just like them, we have faced trials and tribulations, yet our love has only grown stronger with each challenge. Your steadfast loyalty and unwavering support have been my anchor in turbulent seas. Through the pagesof history, their love story continues to inspire us to defy all odds and fight for our love.

In the battlefield of love, we are like Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine, who fought not with swords and shields, but with words and gestures of affection. Your tender words and loving actions have conquered my heart, just as Napoleon's military conquests subdued nations. Our love is a force to be reckoned with, a bond thattranscends time and space, just like their enduring love that has stood the test of time.

The art of letter writing is an enduring form of communication that has transcended centuries, connecting individuals across vast distances and leaving an indelible mark on history. In an era dominated by the immediacy of electronic correspondence, handwritten letters stand out as tangible expressions of thought, emotion, and connection.Firstly, letters provide a unique opportunity for deliberate and reflective communication. Unlike fleeting text messages or emails, a letter invites the writer to carefully craft their words, imbuing them with depth and nuance. The act of writing a letter affords the time and space necessary for thoughtful reflection and the articulation of complex ideas.Secondly, letters preserve memories and create a tangible record of experiences. In a world where digitalcommunication often vanishes into the void of cyberspace, handwritten letters serve as physical reminders of past events, cherished moments, and significant relationships. They can be revisited and savored, evoking memories and emotions that time may have otherwise eroded.Thirdly, letters foster a deeper sense of connection between individuals. The handwritten word carries an intimacy and personal touch that is often lost inelectronic communication. The physical act of writing a letter, with its tactile sensation and the imprint of one's penmanship, conveys a tangible expression of care and thoughtfulness. In addition to these intrinsic benefits, the act of letter writing has also played a pivotal role in shaping history. From the impassioned calls for revolution penned by Thomas Jefferson to the poignant love letters exchanged by renowned figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais, letters have served as a catalyst forsocial and political change, documenting the human experience, and preserving insights into the minds andhearts of generations past.In the realm of literature, letters have been an indispensable tool for storytelling and character development. From the eloquent missives of Jane Austen's heroines to the haunting correspondence of Kafka's protagonists, letters have provided a unique window intothe inner lives of fictional characters, adding depth and complexity to their portrayal.

(Napoleon to Josephine) Napoleon to JosephineDec. 29, 1795I awake all filled with you. Your tears send me out of my mind ... they set my very blood on fire.

Cold here, icy cold there. You belong to neither, leaves have withered. Your face is pale and blue, a tearful smile. Something in your eyes, whispers words of last good-bye. My heart sinks down, tears surge out.

Hot summer. Cheerful Cocktail. You took my hand. We fled into another world of band. You sat by my side, long hair tied behind, cool and killing. Smile floating on the lemonade, soft and smooth. How I was amazed. Your face looked like the cover of the magazine. My head spin. You led my hand, danced along the crazy theme.

Light vied with wine, elegance mixed with fragrance, laughing covered by greetings, thecrowed was busy at handshaking. You stood there, eyes on me. I trembled at the sparkles, brighter than the light. A masterpiece from God, I felt dizzy. We were not near, yet we were together.

Days ended. You said, you would wait for me at the Alps side. We would ski against snowflakes dancing in the sky. I gave no answer but a good-bye to accompany your flight. Gone was the plane, I suddenly tasted my pain. I knew I had been silly and stupid, you were in my heart, I shouldn ’t have hidden in the dark. I tried to forget your disappointment. I made believe sometime someday, I would tell you, I feel all the same.

My thought struggled at confessing, somehow hesitation ended in flinching. I continued my role of a fool, clinched to my maiden pride, yet secretly indulged in your promise of the white land -- snow measuring down to us, in your arms I am lifted up. The chiming of Christmas bell!
