A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 se conds before a person realizes it.Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity w hile making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher J ohn-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神经学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain S ciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questio ns for “consciousness”of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how“free”people are to make a deci sion at a particular moment.“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show tha t consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,”Nature magazine quoted (引用) him as saying. Thinking the results“quite dramatic”, Frank T ong of Vanderbilt University in , , said that 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity.During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as th ey performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each t o be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were sim ultaneously (同时地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at ha lf-second intervals (间隔). The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button.Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earl iest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the v olunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they reckoned (估计) that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds b efore the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region (区域)called the frontopolar cortex (脑额极皮层),which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead. While writing about the observations made during the research i n his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cormight be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict people’s c hoices as their brains would make them.1. Wetake delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societ ies beyond our everyday lives. This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scient ists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The L ord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other, to the world around us, and to the world of make-believe. But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy t hat we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exi st all around us?Human beings, as biologists have suggested, possess an inbor n desire to connect with and understand other life forms, Howev er, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated live s. In a study of British schoolchildren, it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from tele vision shows and video games than with common wildlife. With out modern technology, a small pond could be an amazing worl d filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and ani mals. When we lack meaningful interaction with the world aroun d us, and sometimes even with our families and friends, we see k to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen. The world of make—believe is not necessarily bad. But when the world of fantasy be comes the only outlet for our sense of wonder, then we are reall y missing something. We are missing a connection with the livin g world. Other wonderful worlds exist all around us. But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough, we can see that these worlds, in a broad sense, are really part of our own.47.The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves _____.A. the close connection between man and the fantasy worldB. the wonderful achievements of fantasy literatureC. the fine taste of moviegoers around the worldD. the general existence of the sense of curiosity48.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. People are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.B. The world around us could serve as a sound of wonder.C. The world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.D. Modern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.49.If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make—believe, we will _____.A. fail to appreciate the joy in our livesB. be confused by the world of make—believeC. miss the chance to recognize the fantasy worldD. be trapped by other worlds existing all around us50.What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To show us the hidden beauty in our world.B. To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.C. To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.D. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. Th ey are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women r iding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting re gularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fo x hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of pe ople opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has r isen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without s ome kind of conflict between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly sab oteurs interfere (干涉) with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of t he fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy conflicts between hunters and saboteurs have become s o common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as th e pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. (A)Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading. After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window .I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window .It really looks terrible.”One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean! Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing(批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(评判) someone, I asked myself first ,“Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.1. Does the sky sometimes seem dark to you? Are your studies sometimes not successful? Well, friends, cheer up and smile all the time. If you see the world with your warm heart, you’ll find that the whole world smiles to you. While in school, sometimes you are tired of your lessons, but have you ev er noticed the happy smile on your teacher’s face when you did a good job?One day it is fine. Just before you go out, it suddenly starts to rain. Maybe you would feel very sad and start to complain about the weather. But friends, why don’t you sit down and listen to the free concerts that the nature offers you? And with the timely(及时地) rain, crops in the fields will grow better and better and farmers will have a good harvest. Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries to do, sometimes failure can’t be avoided. I think failure is not terrible, and the terrible thing is that we are afraid of it and give up hope. When we face failure, we must be confident(信心) in ourselves, draw a useful lesson from it and try our best to finish what we have decided to do. Hopefully readers will also have an opportunity to enjoy the movie the way I have halfway around the globe!Slum-dog Millionaire is about a poor boy from the slums (贫民窟), Jamal, who ends up winning the grand prize in an Indian show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. The night before he answers theprize-winning question, Jamal is captured by the police and tortured (拷打). They don’t believe a slumdog like Jamal could answer seven questions correctly and possibly win 20 million rupees (卢比)! But, as the movie unfolds, Jamal reveals (透露) how he found the answers to each of the questions. Viewers also learn about Jamal’s c hildhood, his selfish older brother Salim, and his childhood lover, Latika. The movie’s point, however, is not just to tell a typical story of the underdog (弱者) who becomes a hero. The director also uses Slum-Dog Millionaire to give viewers a taste of India. The movie begins in Jamal’s childhood home in the slums of India. The place where he and his family lived reminds one of the hutongs that used to make up a large part of Old Beijing. Jamal and his brother grow and travel across India, meanwhile surviving as slum-dogs and cheaters, and India ages with them. By the time Jamal is 17 or 18, his old home has been replaced by a giant skyscraper (摩天大楼) financial center. Jamal and Salim take a moment to reminisce (回忆) about their old lives, as they stand high up in a skyscraper that is still under construction. The view from above reminded me of a similar view I had just two years ago in China: I was standing there in the living room of a family friend’s modern apartment, looking out through a window down to the shacks (简陋的房屋) below just next to the building complex. It was amazing how affluence and poverty could live so close together. So, what was most appealing about the movie to me and my Indian friends was how we could relate to the scenarios (情节) presented in the movie. More important than the plot was the window onto the social and economic situations in Asia that it provided.By Jennifer, 16, New Jersey, US1. Which of the following is TRUE about the movie?A. Jamal finally won a big prize after struggling hard to earn an honest living.B. Suspected of cheating, Jamal was arrested by the police before winning the prize.C. Jamal and his brother recalled their past standing where it usedto be their home.D. Jamal remained in his childhood home in the slums before he was 17 or 18.2. Viewers can learn from the movie EXCEPT__________.A. Jamal’s childhood and his bitter experience of wandering across the country.B. The rapid social changes and economic development in India.C. The poor life of people in the slums against the prosperity of cities in Asia.D. The secret of becoming a millionaire through personal struggle. 3.Why does the movie appeal to the writer?A. It’s a typical story of the underdog who becomes a hero, which the writer admires most.B. It’s an Oscar-nominated movie that helps the writer understand the nature of human.C. It has an exciting and complicated plot that attracts the writer very muchD. It reminds the writer of her experience in China and helps her know about Asian countries.4. What can we infer from the reading passage?A. The writer is now studying in a school in China.B. The movie will win the Oscar because of the social problems presented in it.C. The writer is surprised at the gap between the rich and poor in developing countries.D. The movie is only welcomed by Americans who have Indian friends.5. What is the main purpose of writing the passage?A. To introduce a movie to readers and share her views about it.B. To persuade more viewers to go to the cinema to see the movie.C. To express the writer’s enthusiasm towards Asia and its culture.D. To reveal the true social reality in the developing countries.参考答案 1---5 B D D C A*******************************************************结束(C)People know the dangers of fires. While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction. Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job. For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (学术界) outweigh any financial considerations.Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects of a commercial return, and Lee’s is one of them. The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career. Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical (制药的) company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities.Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (转换) to academia more attractive, according to Lee. Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary team, manage budgets and negotiate contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development. “Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow researchproject.”12. By “a one-way street” (Line 1, Para. 1), the author means ________.A .university researchers know little about the commercial worldB. there is little exchange between industry and academiaC. few industrial scientists would quit to work in a universityD. few university professors are willing to do industrial research13. What was Helen Lee’s major conside ration when she changed her job in the middle of hercareer?A. Flexible work hours.B. Her research interests.C .Her preference for the lifestyle on campus. D. Prospects of academic accomplishments.14. Guy Grant chose to work as a researcher at Cambridge in order to ________.A. do financially more rewarding workB. raise his status in the academic worldC. enrich his experience in medical researchD. exploit better intellectual opportunities15. What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university?A. Increase its graduates’ competitiveness in the job market.B. Develop its students’ potential in research.C. Help it to obtain financial support from industry.D. We spoke Tuesday with Jonathan Links, an expert in radiation health sciences. He is a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland.Professor Links says workers within the nuclear plant are the only people at risk of extremely high doses of radiation.JONATHAN LINKS: "Of course, we don't know what doses they've received, but the only persons at risk of acute radiation effects are the workers."For other people, he says, there may be a long-term worry. People can get cancer from low doses of ionizing radiation, the kind released in a nuclear accident.Professor Links says scientists can use computers to quickly model where radioactive material has blown and settled. Then they measure how large an area is contaminated. He says if the situation is serious enough, officials could take steps like telling people not to eat locally grown food or drink the water.JONATHAN LINKS: "But that would only be the case if there was a significant release and, because of wind direction, the radioactive material was blown over the area, and then settled out of the air into and onto water, plants, fruits and vegetables."The reactors at Fukushima are on the Pacific coast. But Professor Links says people should not worry about any radioactive material leaking into the ocean.JONATHAN LINKS: "Even in a worst-case scenario accident, the sea provides a very high degree of dilution. So the concentration of radioactivity in the seawater would still be quite low."Japan is the only country to have had atomic bombs dropped on it. That memory from World War Two would create a stronger "psychological sensitivity" to radiation exposure, Professors Links says.Next month is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the explosion and fire that destroyed a reactor at Chernobyl in Ukraine. The nineteen eighty-six event was the world's worst accident in the nuclear power industry.A new United Nations report says more than six thousand cases of thyroid cancer have been found. These are in people who were children in affected areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The report says that by two thousand five the cancers had resulted in fifteen deaths. The cancers were largely caused by drinking contaminated milk. The milk came from cows that ate grass where radioactive material had fallen. To get the latest updates, go to .Contributing: James Brooke8. The passage mainly tells us __________.A. Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would,is it the best solution?Despite what it promises,GM technology actually has not increased the production potential(潜力)of any crop. In fact studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analysed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Family Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.主要讲转基因技术并不是解决世界饥饿问题最好的方式。

It was a hot summer day that found me running down the street with a dollar in my sweaty hand. The closer I got to Sam & Joe's Stationery Store, the more excited I was. After all, a dollar was a tidy sum for an 11-year-old boy in 1961.Out of breath, I swung open the door and got a blast of cold air that instantly cooled me off. I was in a place of pure happiness. Sam & Joe's had it all---books, candy, toys, baseball cards, puzzles and games. I went directly to the bar and ordered a bottle of soda. There I sat, considering my next move.Books always came first. I picked out five titles. Next came the candy, rows and rows of it. I chose five candy bars, which brought my total to 75 cents. After paying the clerk, I still had 5 cents.I hurried directly to my backyard, where an apple tree patiently waited for me. There, sitting in the shade against its strong trunk, I read my books, ate my candy and drank my orange juice. As I sat in my own personal heaven,I started thinking about having more. 北京市2015届高考一轮专题训练说明文阅读【2014北京】CChoosing the Right Resolution (决定)Millions of Americans began 2014 with the same resolution they started 2013 with, a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake. To reach our goal of losing weight --- the output, we need to control what we eat --- the input ( 输入). That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construce goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “I’ll stop having desert for lunch,” or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.Recently a new science behind incentives (激励) , including in education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increased achievement when based on input but had no effect on output. Fryer’s conclusion was that the intensives for inputs might be more effective because do not knoe how to do better on exam, aside from general rules like “study harder.” Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a well-set task over which they have much more control. As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a much higher chance of success. And it’s easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your family, don’t stop with this general wish. Think bout an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday. In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.63. The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because _______ .A. it is hard to achieve for most AmericansB. it is focused too much on the resultC. it is dependent on too many thingsD. it is based on actionable decisions64. In Roland Fryer’s research, some students did better than the others because ______ .A. they obeyed all the general rulesB. they paid more attention to examsC. they were motivated by their classmatesD. they were rewarded for reading some books65. According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal?A. “I’ll give up desert.”B. “I’ll study harder.”C. “I’ll cut down my expense”D. “I’ll spend more time with my family”66. The writer strongly believes that we should ________ .A. develop good habits and focus on the outcomeB. be optimistic about final goals and stick to themC. pick specific actions that can be turned into good habitsD. set ambitious goals that can balance the input ang output【答案】63-66: BDAC【2014北京】DMultitaskingWhat is the first thing you nitice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sightsand sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’intension to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on slaes. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be. Some years ago,the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.67. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the successof some brand store?A. Friendly assistant.B. Unique scents.C. Soft background musicD. attractive window display.68. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .A. ashow the advantages of brick-and-mortar storesB. urge shop assistants to change their attitudeC. push stores to use sights and soundsD. introduce the rise of e-commerce69. The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means _______ .A. a platform that exhibts goodsB. a spot where travelers like to stayC.a place where customers love to goD. a target that a store expects to meet70. The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .A. compare and evaluateB. examine and assessC. argue and discussrm and explain【答案】67-70: BACD【2012北京】DWilderness“In wilderness(荒野) is the preservation of the world.” This is a famous saying from a writer regarded as one of the fathers of environmentalism. The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved. As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(开发) brings to such landscapes(景观) is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr.Sauven, these ”ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation.Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view. He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation. But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation. There are ever more people on the Earth, and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival. While the ways of using resources have improved, there is still a growing need for raw materials, and some wildernesses contain them in abundance. If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide, the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so. Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic worth valuing above all others.I look forwards to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants. One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly. Andthere is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm. This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason. What position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking.67. John Sauven holds that_____.A. many people value nature too muchB. exploitation of wildernesses is harmfulC. wildernesses provide humans with necessitiesD. the urge to develop the ecosystem services is strong68. What is the main idea of Para. 3?A. The exploitation is necessary for the poor people.B. Wildernesses cannot guarantee better use of raw materials.C. Useful services of wildernesses are not the reason for no exploitation.D. All the characteristics concerning the exploitation should be treated equally.69. What is the author’s attitude towards this debate?A. Objective.B. Disapproving.C. Sceptical.D. Optimistic.70. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A. B.C. D.CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion67.B 第二段中, The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation brings to such landscapes is real.68.C He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, but that is nota reason to avoid all human presence.69.A This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason……deserves much more serious thinking.70.D 总分总的结构类型【2011北京】BSubmission GuidelinesBefore sending us a manuscript(稿件), look through recent issues(刊物)of the Post to get an idea of the range and style of articles we publish. Much of the real significance of railroads and highways is not in their direct physical effect onthe scenery, but in the ways that they affect the suurouding community. The same is true of big solar ppants and the power lines that will be laid dowm to move electricity around. The 19th century saw land grants(政府拨地)offered to railroad companies to build the transcontinental railroads ,leaving public land in between privately owned land . In much of the west ,some of the railroad sections were developed while others remained undeveloped ,and in both cases the landownership has presented unique challenges to land management ,with the completion or the interstate highway system ,many of the small towns which sprang up as railway stops and developed well ,have lost their lifeblood and died .Big solar plants and their power lines will also have effects far beyond their direct footprint in the west .this is not an argument against building then ,we need alternative energy badly .and to really take advantage of it we need to be able to move electricity around far more readily than we can now .So trade-offs will have to be made .some scenic sport will be sacrificed .some species (物种)will be forced to move ,or will be carefully moved to special accommodations ,deals will be struck to reduce the immediate effects .The lasting effects of these trade-offs are another matter .the 21st century development of the American west as an ideal place for alternative energy is going to throw off a lot of power and money to do a lot of good .but it is just as likely that they will be spent wastefully and will leave new problems behind ,just like the railroad and the highway .The money set aside in negotiated trade –offs and the institution that control will shape the west far beyond the immediate footprint of power plants and transmission lines .so let’s remember the effects of the railroad and the highways as we construct these new power plants in the west .67.What was the problem caused by the construction of the railways ?A. Small towns along the railways became abandoned.B. Some railroad stops remained underused.C. Land in the West was hard to manage.D. Land grants went into private hands.68.What is the major concern in the development of alternative energy according to the last two paragraphs ?A. The transmission of power.B. The use of money and power.C. The conservation of solar energy.D. The selection of an ideal place.69.W hat is the author ‘s attitude towards building solar plants ?A. CautiousB. ApprovingC. DoubtfulD. Disapproving70.Which is the best title for the passage ?A. How the Railways Have Affected the WestB. How Solar Energy Could Reshape the WestC. How the Effects of Power Plants Can Be ReducedD. How the Problems of the Highways Have Been Settled67-70 CBAB【2010北京】CPacing and PausingSara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in--and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.That's why slight differences in conversational style--tiny little things like microseconds of pause-can have a great effect on one's life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems---even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.64. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?A. Betty was talkative.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.65. According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between turns?A. Americans.B. Israelis.C. The British.D. The Finns.66. We can learn from the passage that __A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the USC. one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up one's confidence67. The underlined word "assertiveness" in the last paragraph probably means __A. being willing to speak one's mindB. being able to increase one's powerC. being ready to make one's own judgmentD. being quick to express one's ideas confidentlyC篇阅读技巧:开篇复杂的人物关系,以及第三段几个国家之间的复杂对比是学生阅读的最大困难。

The unit, expected by the end of the year, will use hydraulic technology to compress (压缩) the gas for vehicle use, he said. He did not say how much the unit would cost. But Go Natural may have a lot of competition. General Electric, Whirlpool and Eaton are all working on home refueling technologies expected to be launched in the next couple of years.General Electric, which received $1.8 million from the government to develop its system, aims to release a unit that will cool natural gas to minus 50 degrees Celsius to extract (提取) water and other contaminates before refueling. GE aims to sell the unit at $500, about a tenth of the cost of current models.General Electric said it was in the development phase and declined to comment on the program’s progress.Honda, which makes the natural gas-fired Honda Civic GX, has contacted GE and Whirlpool to discuss their plans, according to Elmer Hardy, Honda’s senior manager of alternative fuel vehicles.Eaton, which received $3.4 million from the government to develop the technology, is working on a unit at its labs in Southfield, Michigan, that would use liquids to compress the gas instead of the traditional metal pistons(活塞). It aims to make a unit available for $500 by 2015.“We are seeing if we can do it in a way that reduces the price point,”said Clark Fortune, who leads the program at Eaton. “The adoption will improve if the costs come down.”46. Soon you may be able to throw your wallet away and pay for things with a quick wave of your smart phone over an electronic scanner. In January, Starbucks announced that customers could start using their phones to buy coffee in 6, 800 of its stores. This is the firstpay-by-phone practice in the U. S. , but we’re likely to see more wireless payment alternatives as something called near field communication(NFC) gets into America’s consumer electronics. Last December, some new smart phones which contain an NFC chip were introduced to the public.Already in use in parts of Asia and Europe, NFC allows shoppers to wave their phones a few inches above a payment terminal—a contact-free system built for speed and convenience. But before NFC becomes widely adopted in the U. S. , a few problems need to be worked out, like who will get to collect the profitable transaction (交易) fees. Although some credit card providers have been experimenting with wave-and-pay systems that use NFC-enabled credit cards, cellphone service providers may try to muscle their way into the point-of-sale(POS) market. Three big cellphone service providers have formed a joint venture (合资企业) that will g o into operation over the next 15 months. Its goal is “to lead the U. S. payments industry from cards to mobile phones.”The other big NFC issue, apart from how payments will be processed, is security. For instance, what’s to stop a thief from digitallypi ckpocketing you? “We’re still not at the point where an attacker can just brush against you in a crowd and steal all the money out of your phone,” says Jimmy Shah, a mobile-security researcher. “Users may also be able to set transaction limits, perhaps requiring a password to be entered for larger purchases.”Still uneasy about this digital-wallet business? Keep in mind that ifyou lose your smart phone, it can be located on a map and remotely disabled. Plus, your phone can be password protected. Your walle t isn’t.1. What is predicted to happen in the U. S. ?A. The expansion of cellphone companies.B. The boom of pay-by-phone business.C. The disappearance of credit cards.D. The increase of Starbucks sales.2. Some of the earliest board games are over 5,000 years old. The oldest is probably Senet, an American Egyptian game which has been found in burials from before 3000 BC. The game involves an element of luck, and so it was thought by the Ancient Egyptians that those who won the game were protected by God. For this reason, games of Senet were often buried alongside the dead body, to be used on the dangerous game board is set out as a grid of three by ten rows, and uses two sets of at least five pawns. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near tothe far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment, she fell back into the river. 高中英语真题:2015高考英语阅读理解一轮训练(10)【2015高考复习】阅读理解Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building wit h controlled light, temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a highrise or a sprawling comple x in the Saudi desert. It may be an answer to the world's food pr oblems. The world already is having trouble feeding itself.Half the peopl e on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those- about 3 billion-are hungry or illfed.Foodprices, currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvestand transport. And prices will only get more unstable.Climate change makes longterm crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world already are using water available to the last drop. And the world is gettin g more crowded:by midcentury, the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion. To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at th e expense of forests and wilderness,or finding ways to completely increase crop output.Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house plants in enclosed (封闭的) and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans when needed, and the temperature is kept constant.Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but according to the rhythm of the plant.A building of 100 square meters and layers (层) of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people.Their idea isn't to grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes. Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful.Plants need only specific wavelengths of light to grow.Their growth rat e is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90 percent less water than outdoor agriculture. And ci ty farming means producing food near the consumer, and there's no need to transport it long distances.【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。

]CKirk Watson, then Austin‟s mayor, remembers it this way:“I was at the gym working out and going back and forth between different machines, doing different things. I was on a treadmill(踏车), my head down and a guy on another treadmill cried out, …Mayor, is that the World Trade Center?‟ ”Moments later, Watson was in another part of the gym, away from televisions. “Another guy said another one hit.” he recalled.Watson, now a state senator, recalls every detail, every emotion of Sept. 11, 2001.“I will never forget the feeling of watching the towers fall,” he said, recalling going into mayor mode when it became clear our nation was under attack. You, too, remember the details, the emotions of 9/11. Five weeks from today, on the 10th anniversary of that awful day, we will provide a forum for Central Texans to share their memories. At times, the memories are so vivid, it seems impossible it was so long ago. And there are times the memories are so horrific that it can be hard to comprehend that such a thing actually happened. For many of us, the 9/11 attacks on our homeland are the equivalent(等同) of what the attack on Pearl Harbor was for Americans on Dec. 7, 1941. The events were comparable, but the outcome was different. Does it seem to you America was in a better place 10 years after Pearl Harbor than we are 10 years after 9/11? We remain at war on two fronts. Our nation‟s economy is shrinking. Too many Americans are unemployed. W e face challenges so deep that some Americans — inheritors(继承人) of a national spirit long marked by eternal optimism about a boundless future — are thinking about whether our best days are behind us.“Sept. 11, 2001 was our day that will live in evil,” Watson said. “We need to make sure our children and grandchildren will say we reacted to our day that lived in evil at least as well as that generation that came before us reacted to Pearl Harbor.”Have we done that? We‟d like to share your thoughts in a project planned for these pages on Sunday, Sept.11. Are your memories consumed by the horror of the sights of that day? And, like Watson, do the emotions of the day still burn within you?63.When America was under attack on Sept 11, 2001, Kirk Watson was________.A.in the office having a talk with his staffB.receiving a phone call from his colleagueC.in the stadium watching TVD.at the gym taking exercise64.It can be learnt from the passage that ten years after Sept 11, 2001, ________ .A.America is in a better place than they were 10 years after Pearl HarborB.America‟s economy is picking upC.Americans are worried about their futureD.many Americans are living a happy life65.The author‟s purpose in writing the passage is to ________ .A.hope the readers will talk about how they feel about the 9/11 attacksB.expect the victims of the 9/11 attacks will be tolerantC.call on all Americans to uniteD.encourage American young people to fight against terrorists66.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Great Pain Disappears SlowlyB.Ten Years Later, Memory Still BurnsC.Ten Years Ago, the 9/11 Attacks Occurred UnexpectedlyD.The 9/11 Attacks, Forgettable or Forgivable【参考答案】63—66、DCAB[史地自然型阅读理解]----- (三)Besides containing attractive flowers, trees and other plants that beautify the community, ecofriendly rain gardens(雨水花园) are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby.A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden. It is just a far more ecofriendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak(浸入)slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply. Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water willsoak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco friendly “green” way to treat storm water. What's more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once the native plants establish the necessary root system, it will require little care.Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. However, you don't need to be a professional environmental engineer to create a rain garden. As long as you're ecoconscious homeowners, you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.1.Which of the following is NOT true for the function of rain gardens?A. They need little water after all the plants are planted.B. They usually need at least an inch of rainwater a week.C.They may attract local birds and change the local climate.D.
