Tolerance means tolerating or putting up with differences. 36 . This concept means different things to different people, but it is when something is disagreeable, that tolerance is expected, and in more politically correct cultures, demanded. There are many different ways to show tolerance. A person might fully disagree with others on any issue, while at the same time respecting those with different opinions and treating them with dignity. 37 .One problem is the fact that this respect is sometimes one-sided. 38 . But some supporters feel reasonable in labeling those who disagree with hateful terms, and vice versa. People on both sides of an issue must be tolerant of each other.39 . It does not mean that a person has to accept actions or ideas that are against his or her values or beliefs. It means that each person agrees to respect the others' right to his or her feelings on the matter. When both parties have expressed their opinions, and it is obvious that neither is likely to change position, agreeing to disagree is often the ideal outcome. Some degree of tolerance is necessary in any civilized society. 40 . It goes against human nature. Putting up with differences is a virtue that requires honest effort on the part of every person. It takes time to develop.A. Therefore, both parties should change their opinions if necessary.B. It is widely accepted that tolerance is a critical step towards a peaceful world.C. Disagreement alone does not equal intolerance.D. It refers to showing respect for the race, religion and opinions of other people.E. Those who disagree with a particular issue must respect the opinions of those who support it.F. However, it is not realistic to believe that all people can achieve it completely on every issue.G. When it comes to controversial issues. tolerance may also represent a "let's agree to disagree" attitude.DCEGF河南省郑州市2021届高三英语上学期1月第一次质量预测英语试题第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AImagine you've had a fight with your best friend. It's a stupid fight, something you will both get over. But right now you are upset. When you walk in the door, your mum asks what's wrong. How are you mostly likely to respond? Have a long, comforting talk about it with her.Or head to the fridge for the ice cream. But can that really help you feel better—or just make you feel sickeningly full?Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We've all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a coming exam. But when done a lot—especially without realizing it—emotional eating can affect weight, health, and well-being.One of the biggest beliefs about emotional eating is that it's caused by negative feelings.Yes,people often turn to food when they're stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious,or bored.Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linkedto positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.More often, though,it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or relaxation in food.We all have our own comfort foods.Amazingly, they may vary according to moods and sex.One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies.Bored people desire salty, fragile things, like chips.Girls go for chocolate and ice cream. This brings up a curious question: Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?Researchers are looking into that, too. What they're finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset. We're all emotional eaters to some extent. But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. For example,do you come home from school each day and automatically head to the kitchen? Stop and ask yourself,“Am I really hungry?〞 Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.1. The first two paragraphs are designed to ________.A. offer advice on how to comfort an annoyed childB. explain the function of eating an ice creamC. put forward the idea of emotional eatingD. stress the importance of friendship2. People turn to emotional eating because ________.A. they suffer from weight problemsB. they want to seek comfort or relaxationC. they have a strong desire for foodD. they benefit a lot from eating3. Which of the following may not serve as comfort food?A. Cookies.B. Carrots.C. Chips.D. Pizzas.4. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Eat whenever you can't concentrate.B. It is natural to feel hungry after school.C. It's hard to tell physical hunger from mental hunger.D. There are ways to break the cycle of emotional eating.【答案(dá àn)】1. C 2. B 3. B 4. D【解析】【分析】这是一篇说明文,介绍了“情绪饮食〞这个概念,并对其进展了分析。

"Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment." As time went on, the crowds and other racers spread around. Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(体外骨髓)to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving. In 2013, Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor(肿瘤)that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs. He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had "always wanted to run a marathon," he said, but he never made the plan to do so—until this year.During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest. "At that point, I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally," Kindleysides said. But he kept going. "I didn't want to let people down. I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity," he said. "I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far, I would have to continue." So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot. Then, recovering at home, he shared his accomplishment with his three children. "They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad, the only one who has walked a marathon," he said.Kindleysides is training to complete three more marathons next year, including the London Marathon again.(1)Why did Kindleysides' supporters accompany him all the way?A.To help change the batteries.B.To inspire him as a team.C.To guide him along the road.D.To assist him with the wheelchair.(2)What caused Kindleysides' disability?A.An accident in the previous marathon.B.An operation on his brain for the tumor.C.The pressure from the brain tumor on the nerves.D.Some nerves produced out of the tumor.(3)What partly supported Kindleysides to finish the hardest two-mile race?A.The belief to beat others.B.The kindness to help the charity.C.The strong desire to recover.D.The prize money for the winner.(4)What can we learn about Kindleysides?A.He was once a successful actor.B.His children feel a pity for him in the wheelchair now.C.He was the first disabled-man to complete the London Marathon.D.He is ambitious for joining in London marathons once more.4.Microplastics, the kind of current working definition, are plastic particles(颗粒)less than five millimeters. So people commonly think the microplastic to be something like a grain of rice or a sesame seed. Actually, most of the microplastics that people are interacting with are quite a bit smaller than the sesame seed size, so it always shocks people when they know about the number of microplastics because they can hardly see a lot of these things, at least with the naked eye.Kieran Cox, a PhD candidate in marine(海洋的)biology at the University of Victoria, is one of the authors of the study, which is in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. For their study, Cox and his team pulled together past scientific literature that calculated the number of microplastics in things we commonly consume, such as in tap and bottled water, sugars, seafood—even in the air that we breathe. This analysis helped them figure out the baseline amount of microplastics that people are consuming every year. They couldn't include common foods like beef, vegetables and dairy in their analysis because the data on them doesn't exist yet. In fact, their study could account for only 15 percent of people's caloric in-take. Even missing the majority of what people swallow, the research revealed that—at the very least—humans appear to consume somewhere between 74,000 and 121,000 microplastics every year. That number goes up for people drinking bottled water rather than tap water. Now, is all the plastic safe to take in? Scientists don't know yet. This is like the first estimate of the dose which means an amount of a medicine that is taken once. So the amount is a very important factor to think about, but it is very difficult to estimate because it is what we don't know.(1)What do we know about the microplastic?A.It's much bigger than a grain of rice.B.It's barely seen without an instrument.C.It can be a kind of fish feed.D.It's harmless to humans.(2)What is the second paragraph mainly about?A.The study of microplastics people consume.B.The analysis of past scientific literature.C.The amount of nicroplastics in food.D.The study of marine biology.(3)Which aspect should scientists focus on in further study according to the text?A.Making plastics safe.B.The things people swallow.C.The amount of bottled water.D.Finding the safe dose of microplastics.(4)What can we learn about the study?A.It was about a new material.B.It was published in a journal.C.Kieran Cox didn't finish it.D.Scientists did it by using marine life.5.Hoping to raise £15,000, 44-year-oll Natal Gorman who will be accompanied during parts of her walk by her 13-week-old dog named 'Buddy" is shortly to set out on a charity walk from Cromer Pier in Norfolk to Sittingbourne, Kent.Trying to make sense of personal misfortune, including five continuing miscarriages(流产), Natalie became inspired to do something positive and as walking has played a key part in her dealing method, a walk to raise money for causes close to her heart, seemed like an obvious choice.Unsurprisingly, the first of three charities that will benefit from any funds raised will be The Miscarriage Association. Having lost family and friends due to cancer, she decides Cancer Research will be the second charity to benefit. The final charity Covex was set up by her mother's late partner and for many years had a charity shop in Norfolk. Covex is a UK registered charity devoted to delivering aid to the poor and displaced families, children and the elderly, hospitals, orphanages and many varied projects in Romania.Natalie says "With the closure of the charity shops in Norfolk, my mom now relies on raising money to help fund the trips. She takes aid out to hospitals, churches, and Children's Homes.""The aid for churches is for people young and old that have lost everything due to flooding or house fires. This could be beds, mattresses, toys and clothes. Aid for hospitals could be hospital beds, bandages, and hoists to name a few. The Children's Homes receive items like books, pencils, toys, clothes, and furniture, etc."The walk has been divided into seven daily sections, each approximately between 25 and 30 miles. Natalie will start from Cromer Pier on August 2nd and for support a local Comer walking group has offered to accompany her at the start of the journey.Any donation made large or small is greatly appreciated.(1)Why does Natalie start the walk?A.To help her mom with fund.B.To raise money for charity.C.To make sense of her life.D.To get physical exercise.(2)Which is the second charity to benefit from the funds raised?A.Covex.B.AIDS research.C.Cancer Research.D.The Miscarriage Association.(3)About how many miles is it from Cromer Pier in Norfolk to Sittingbourne, Kent?A.170.B.200.C.220.D.230.(4)What's the text mainly about?A.A great woman.B.A wise choice.C.A walking method.D.A great charity walk.三、书面表达(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)6. She put it aside, thinking it was one of those detective tales she loved. On a rainy Saturday, she picked up the book. As she sped through the pages, she became fascinated by the drama, which encouraged her to explore nature's wonders. Even though her high school teacher told her that girls didn't become scientists, she decided she would. She worked with a biologist, Charpentier, to turn a curiosity of nature into an invention—an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as Crispr, the tool will transform the human race. James Watson, the author of The Double Helix, later told her it was the most important biological advance since he and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA.For this achievement, Doudna and Charpentier were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. Until now, only five women, beginning with Marie Curie in 1911, had won or shared the Nobel for Chemistry out of 184 award winners. When this year's prize was announced, Dr. Charpentier said it would provide a message specifically to young girls who would like to follow the path of science and to show them that women can also be awarded prizes.A few decades from now, if it becomes possible and safe to edit DNA, should we allow parents to improve the IQ and physical strength of their kids? Should we let them decide eye color? Skin color? Height? After helping to discover Crispr, Dr. Doudna has become a leader in considering these moral issues. That's the main message we should take from this Nobel: New technologies can be a huge benefit to the human race, but in order to make sure they are used wisely, it's important for people to understand them.(1)Jennifer Doudna decided to become a scientist because, ________.A.her father pushed herB.a book inspired herC.her teacher encouraged herD.James Watson motivated her(2)Dr. Doudna was awarded the Nobel Prize because, ________.A.she wrote the book "The Double Helix"B.she discovered the structure of DNAC.she is a hardworking woman scientistD.she helped invent a tool for editing DNA(3)According to passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.The two women's success will inspire more girls to be devoted to science.B.Since 1911, there have been 184 people who won the Nobel for chemistry.C.If girls follow the path of science, they will surely achieve their goals.D.Crispr will make a big difference to the human race.(4)Which words can best describe Jennifer Doudna?A.Determined and responsible.B.Ambitious and humorous.C.Cruel and indifferent.D.Fearless and stubborn.4.If you want to lose weight fast to fulfill a New Year's resolution or just live a better life, be careful you don't push yourself past a safe weight loss rate.Rapid weight loss can have some side effects, and it's also not effective: people who drop a lot of weight quickly tend to gain it back because they have not treasured the important lifestyle changes that will support their lower weight.Livestrong lists some diseases such as fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gallstones and hair loss as potential side effects from pounds lost quickly. Malnutrition(营养失调)which will result from a weight loss plan that severely restricts your diet, can also make you dizzy and tired , but the UK's National Health Service adds it can lead to trouble concentrating or depression. Not having enough necessary nutrients also leaves you easier to infection. But those side effects coming from weight loss speeds don't sound all that fast: Livestrong puts them at 3 pounds or more in a week, and eats fewer than 800 calories per day. The weight loss should be more gradual than that, according to experts. "A persons approach to weight loss should be one that is enjoyable and can be maintained over the long term," Live Science says. "Guidelines recommend that people start out with a goal of losing 5 to 10 percent of their body weight over six months."With weight loss, as is the case with many things in life, slow and steady wins the race.(1)What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?A.The ways of losing weight.B.The side effects of losing weight.C.The benefits of losing weight.D.The ways of keeping healthy.(1)If a person weighs 250 pounds, how much should he lose a month according to Guidelines?A.2 to 4 pounds.B.12 to 25 pounds.C.1 to 2 pounds.D.3 or more pounds.(3)Which column of a website does the passage come from?A.Wealth.B.Work.C.News.D.Health.5.I was 16 years old the day l skipped school for the first time. Why? Hit the mall? Nope. I was delighted by a book—it was Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises—and I just needed to be alone with in. I couldn't bear the thought of sitting in a classroom and taking another biology exam.I spent that day lost in words. My role in the world(as a daughter, sister, teenager and student)no longer had any meaning. I had found the key to perfect happiness: I had become completely absorbed by something I loved. Please note that absorption(专注)is not the same as obsession(着魔). To be absorbed by something is to become it. It's true, for instance, that when we spend hours distracted by our smartphones, we become nothing at all. We don't get enriched; we just get removed. So the trick to happiness is to find something that absorbs you and to become that thing bypursuing(追求)it with devoted attention. In order for this trick to work, however, your only reason for the pursuit must be pure love. As a young person, I devoted myself to reading simply because I loved it. Any other motivation, the desire for recognition or wealth or power, for instance, wouldn't have led me into happiness. The principal called my mom at work, and my mom called home, and I answered the phone. I got in big trouble. Certainly nobody believed that l had skipped school merely to read. So, yeah, I got grounded for two weeks, but it was worth it, because something more important was happening: I was getting stuck in the blessed field of my own becoming.Soon I will put another log on the fire, and then write another page or read or study or edit another page. If I ever find anything better to do with my time than this, I'll get back. Till then, let the great world spin, because loving absorption is mine, and happiness is its generous side effect.(1)Why did the author skip school that day?A.To go shopping in a mall.B.To avoid a biology exam.C.To read The Sun Also Rises.D.To be alone in the wood.(2)What did the author find by skipping school?A.The direction of life.B.The power of writing.C.The role in the world.D.The trick to happiness.(3)What did the author think of the punishment?A.Worthwhile.B.Frightening.C.Shameful.D.Annoying.(4)What did the author tell us in her story?A.Happiness is a side effect of language.B.Absorption is the source of the joy.C.Love works better than money in happiness.D.Devotion makes an adventurous travel.三、书面表达(本题共计 2 小题,每题 5 分,共计10分)6. 假定你是李华,你校将举办主题是“中国历史名人”的英文演讲比赛,请写封邮件邀请你校外教Mr. Robert来当评委,内容包括:1. 比赛简介(时间,地点和目的);2. 评委职责。

The Academy of Motion Pictures announced on Jan, 7 that food served at Oscar events will be almost entirely plant-based. Both the annual lunch for Oscar winners and the finger food served before the actual ceremony on Feb, 9 will be 100% plant-based. Reuters also reports that "the menu for the Governors' Ball, a great event held immediately after the Oscar ceremony, will be 70% plant-based and 30%, fish and meat."Additionally, drinks in plastic containers will no longer be served at any Oscar events. The Academy explained in a statement that, "For the past seven years, the Oscars show has had a low carbon mark. We continue to expand our sustainability plan(可持续发展计划)with the final goal of becoming carbon-free."Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said he wasn't sure how the vegan(严格的素食主义的)menu would be received but was "pleasantly surprised" by the attention it produced. Though many questioned if long-time vegan and actor Joaquin Phoenix played a key role in the push to vegan, Soria says the change was supported by multiple actors in the industry. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts(BAFTA)issued(发布)their guests a set of fashion guidelines this year, along with their own plant-based menu and eco-friendly travel tips. Sadly, this attempt wasn't successful. "It was a strange disconnect," journalist Hannah Marriott writes. "Perhaps BAFTA issued the advice too late for the celebrities to come on board?"If you consider fashion production, shipping and use is responsible for around 10% of the world's annual carbon emissions, this was more than a missed moment. Hopefully, both the entertainment industry and celebrities themselves will continue to use their global platform for good in the coming years—whether it's food, fashion or flights.(1)What is special about Hollywood's going green this time?A.It is mainly focused on food.B.It is globally supported.C.It aims to consume no meat.D.It encourages healthy drinks.(2)What can we know about going green according to the Academy of Motion Pictures?A.It has made changes to human life.B.It is a new trend in the Oscars show.C.It has been taking place in Hollywood.D.It is so urgent in the entertainment industry.(3)How do entertainers respond to going green judging from Lorenzo Soria's words?A.Most of them keep going on vegan diets.B.All of them don't support the vegan menu.C.Few of them doubt Joaquin Phoenix's efforts.D.Many of them join in pushing people to vegan.(4)What can we infer about the going green attempt of BAFTA?A.It requires more improved advertising methods.B.It is a goal most celebrities are eager to realize.C.It is a concept deeply rooted in people's minds.D.It suffers difficulties when carried out this time.B. Fashion.(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine.B. The Popularity of Tonic Food.C. An Introduction to Chinese Tonic Food.D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food.5.Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing(冲洗)off raw poultry(家禽). Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria. The do-not-wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important. But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging. The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli(大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking. To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.(1)People don't accept USDA's advice because ________.A.the advice is relatively newB.cleaning seems more trustworthyC.cooks clean the turkey before cooking itD.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food(2)What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?A.Food packages carry germs.B.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.C.Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.(3)Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?A.Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.B.Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.C.Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.e a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.(4)From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken?A.Culture.B.Science.cation.D.Medicine.

Last Sunday, my family went for walk in a nearby park. We wanted to breathe the fresh air and having fun there. However, when going out, we find it was cloudy and smoggy. Only a few people were walking quick on the streets wearing their masks. I was wondering why the matter was when my little brother began to cough loudly. Suddenly, I realized that it was air pollution. So we had to go to home that day. Smoke from cars, buses, and factories make the air dirty, that is harmful to our health. I think they all should do something to keep the air clean.
Dear Tom,
In your last e-mail, you said you wanted to learn something about Chinese paper cutting.
Yours,
Li Hua
