The 2007 National Postgraduate Entrance Examination for English, Paper 1: Reading Comprehension and Translation.Part I:Reading Comprehension (60%)Passage 1: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of WorkArtificial Intelligence (AI) is fast becoming an integral part of our daily lives, reshaping various industries and the way we work. As AI technologies continue to advance, concerns over its impact on employment are growing. This passage explores the relationship between AI and the future of work.AI has already made significant progress in automating repetitive and routine tasks. Its ability to analyze vast amounts of data and perform complex calculations has revolutionized industries such as manufacturing and customer service. However, experts argue that AI will not replace humans entirely. While it does have the potential to eliminate some jobs, it will also create new opportunities and change the nature of work. One of the main reasons for this shift is the need for human skills that AI cannot replicate. Creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence are qualities that make humans invaluable in many job roles. AI may be efficient in processing data, but it lacks the ability to understand human emotions and complex social interactions. Therefore, jobs that require these interpersonal skills will remain in demand. Moreover, the integration of AI in the workplace can enhance productivity and efficiency. AI systems can analyze data at a much fasterrate than humans, enabling businesses to make informed decisions and improve their operations. By automating routine tasks, employees can focus on more meaningful and strategic work, ultimately increasing job satisfaction. While some fear that AI will lead to mass unemployment, historical evidence suggests otherwise. Throughout history, technological advancements have consistently led to the creation of new jobs. The Industrial Revolution, for example, resulted in the decline of certain industries but simultaneously opened doors to new occupations. Similarly, AI will likely lead to the emergence of new job categories, requiring individuals to constantly adapt and acquire new skills. In conclusion, the rapid development of AI is transforming the world of work. Although certain jobs may become obsolete, AI's integration will also open up new opportunities for employment. The future of work will require a combination of human skills and AI technologies, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in an ever-changing job market.Passage 2: The Benefits of Outdoor ExerciseIn today's fast-paced world, finding time to exercise can be a challenge. However, research suggests that exercising outdoors provides additional benefits beyond physical fitness. This passage examines the advantages of outdoor exercise for both the body and mind.Firstly, exercising in natural environments exposes individuals to fresh air and sunlight. Sunshine is a natural source of vitamin D, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones and immune function. Spending time outdoorsalso allows people to escape the air pollution commonly found in urban areas, leading to improved respiratory health. In addition to the physical benefits, outdoor exercise has been associated with enhanced mental well-being. Engaging in physical activity in nature can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. The soothing sounds of birds chirping, the calming effect of being surrounded by greenery, and the opportunity to unplug from electronic devices can all contribute to improved mental health. Research has shown that individuals who exercise outside experience greater feelings of revitalization and improved mood compared to those who exercise indoors.Furthermore, outdoor exercise provides a more diverse and stimulating environment for physical activity. In contrast to the monotonous setting of a gym, outdoor spaces offer varied terrain and natural obstacles, which engage different muscle groups and increase the intensity of the workout. This diversity not only challenges the body but also adds an element of fun and excitement to the exercise routine.Lastly, exercising outdoors can foster a sense of connection with nature and promote environmental awareness. When individuals spend time in natural surroundings, they develop a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world. This increased ecological consciousness may inspire individuals to take actions to protect the environment, leading to the preservation of our planet's resources. To summarize, outdoor exercise offers numerous advantages for both physical and mental well-being. The combination of fresh air, natural surroundings, and exposure to sunlight provides additional benefits beyondwhat can be achieved through indoor workouts. By incorporating outdoor exercise into our routines, we can reap the rewards of improved physical fitness, mental health, and environmental consciousness.。

(7)Part CDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points)The study of law has been recognized for centuries as a basic intellectual discipline in European universities. However, only in recent years has it become a feature of undergraduate programs in Canadian universities. (46) Traditionally, legal learning has been viewed in such institutions as the special preserve of lawyers rather than a necessary part of the intellectual equipment of an educated person. Happily, the older and more continental view of legal education is establishing itself in a number of Canadian universities and some have even begun to offer undergraduate degrees in law.If the study of law is beginning to establish itself as partand parcel of a general education, its aims and methods should appeal directly to journalism educators. Law is a discipline which encourages responsible judgment. On the one hand, it provides opportunities to analyze such ideas as justice, democracy and freedom. (47) On the other, it links these concepts to everyday realities in a manner which is parallel to the links journalists forge on a daily basis as they cover and comment on the news. For example, notions of evidence and fact, of basic rights and public interest are at work in the process of journalistic judgment and production just as in courts of law. Sharpening judgment by absorbing and reflecting on law is a desirable component of a journalist's intellectual preparation for his or her career.(48) But the idea that the journalist must understand the law more profoundly than an ordinary citizen rests on an understanding of the established conventions and special responsibilities of the news media. Politics or, more broadly, the functioning of the state, is a major subject for journalists. The better informed they are about the way the state works, the better their reporting will be. (49) In fact, it is difficult to see how journalists who do not have a clear preps of the basic。

As is graphically pictured in the miniature above, when a soccer player is preparing to shot at goal, in his mind appears a goalkeeper with huge figure which nearly block the goal so that he could not get any opportunity to score, while in the goalkeeper’s eyes, the same picture occurs. Apparently, what the miniaturist intends to reveal is a not uncommon phenomenon that far too many, particularly young adults in the Ivory Tower, are prone to distrust in their own, which is poisonous to their mental and physic growth. It is a truth universally acknowledged that most of high-achievers, if not all, pocket this sort of quality—self-confidence. Youngsters enjoying this kind of character can gain a competitive edge over their counterparts or opponents in the future career. Undeniably, people who lack of this quality is hardly likely to make a high achievement, not to mention to possess charismatic character to appeal to others’admire. On my personal level, it is this marvelous quality that inspires our glowing capacity so that we can accept all sort of challenges in thenot-too-distant future more naturally. Consequently, parents concerned are under the imperative to pay a great deal of attention to foster their kids’self-confidence. And moreover, they ought to encourage their children to make some bold attempt in an effort to improve their own self-confirm. With the advent of the internet, the landscape of education has been revolutionized. The year 2007 marked a significant milestone in the integration of the internet into educational practices. This essay will explore the various ways in which the internet has impacted education, focusing on the advantages and challenges it presents.Firstly, the internet has provided access to a wealth of information that was previously unavailable to students.Online databases, digital libraries, and educational websites have become invaluable resources for research and learning. Students can now access scholarly articles, historical documents, and a plethora of educational materials with justa few clicks, which has greatly facilitated the research process and deepened the scope of knowledge acquisition.Secondly, the internet has enabled new forms of learning that are more interactive and flexible. Online courses and virtual classrooms have made education more accessible to individuals who may not have the means or the ability to attendtraditional schools. This has been particularly beneficialfor working adults, people living in remote areas, and those with disabilities. The flexibility of online learning allows students to study at their own pace and on their own schedule, which can be more conducive to effective learning. However, the internet has also presented challenges to theeducational system. One of the primary concerns is the issue of information accuracy. With the abundance of content available online, it can be difficult for students to discern credible sources from unreliable ones. This has led to the need for critical thinking skills and information literacy to be integrated into the curriculum.Another challenge is the digital divide, where unequal access to technology and the internet can exacerbate existing educational inequalities. Students from underprivileged backgrounds may not have the same level of access to online resources and digital tools as their more affluent peers, which can hinder their ability to compete academically. In conclusion, the internet has had a profound impact on education in 2007 and continues to shape it today. While it offers numerous advantages such as expanded access to information and flexible learning opportunities, it also presents challenges that need to be addressed. As we move forward, it is crucial for educational institutions to harness the power of the internet while also equipping students with the skills to navigate this digital landscape effectively.。

Directions: Write an essay of 160-200 words based on the followingdrawing. In your essay, you should1) describe the drawing briefly,2) explain its intended meaning, and then3) support your view with an example/examples.You should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)It goes without saying that this picture aims at revealing a current problem: what kind of attitude we will choose when facing difficulties and challenges. In this drawing, a football-player is prepared to kick a ball towards the net, where a goal-keeper keeps guard. However, in the player’s mind appears a scene in which the keeper becomes a giant covering the net completely, while the latter imagines that he turns out to be a dwarf standing below the huge net. Obviously, both of them lack courage and confidence in front of challenges. These two players represent those who often choose to magnify their enemies and dangers, and lose their confidence to fight against them. As a result, what they can achieve in the end is nothing but failure. This sad situation can be best illustrated in the fact that some people lose their chance of success in the entrance examination for the MA program. When preparing for the exam, they often feel depressed thinking that they are never well-prepared. In fact, they will soon realize that it is not as difficult as they thought before. In a word, they suffer from underestimating their abilities. In our life, what we need most is self-insurance and a proper view of challenges before us. Therefore, we should bear in mind that our competitors may not be as terrible as expected, and our painstaking efforts will pay off as long as we arm ourselves with courage and confidence. Only in this way can we overcome anydifficulties and challenges.。

Although the specific topic of the 2007 English Level 6 essay is not provided, I will create a sample essay based on a common theme that could have been relevant at that time.Globalization has been a topic of intense debate inrecent years. While it has brought about numerous benefits, such as economic growth and technological advancements, ithas also raised concerns about its impact on local cultures. This essay will explore the effects of globalization oncultural diversity and the importance of preserving local traditions.Firstly, globalization has facilitated the spread ofglobal cultures, often at the expense of local ones. The dominance of Western media, for instance, has led to the widespread adoption of Western lifestyles and values, which can overshadow the unique characteristics of local cultures. This homogenization can result in a loss of cultural identity, as traditional practices and languages are gradually replaced by global norms.Secondly, the economic pressures of globalization canlead to the commodification of culture. Local arts and crafts, for example, may be produced on a mass scale to meet global demand, losing their original cultural significance in the process. This commercialization can strip away the authenticity of cultural expressions, reducing them to mere commodities for sale. However, globalization also offers opportunities for the preservation and promotion of local cultures. The internet and social media platforms have become powerful tools for cultural exchange, allowing people to share and celebrate their cultural heritage on a global stage. Moreover, the increased awareness of cultural diversity has led to a greater appreciation for local traditions, with many communities actively working to preserve their cultural heritage. In conclusion, while globalization poses challenges to local cultures, it also presents opportunities for cultural exchange and preservation. This has not only made learning more convenient but has also democratized education, allowing students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to access quality educational materials.InteractivityInteractive technology, such as multimedia presentations and educational software, has transformed the classroom environment. These tools engage students in a more dynamic learning process, promoting active participation and critical thinking. For instance, simulations and virtual labs allowstudents to conduct experiments and explore concepts in a safe and controlled digital environment, enhancing their understanding and retention of complex subjects.PersonalizationOne of the most significant impacts of technology on education is the ability to personalize learning. Adaptive learning platforms and intelligent tutoring systems cantailor educational content to suit the individual needs and learning styles of each student. This personalized approach helps students to progress at their own pace and ensures that they receive the support they need to overcome learning challenges.ConclusionWhile technology has undoubtedly brought about significant changes in the field of education, it is essential to recognize that it is not a panacea for all educational challenges. The effective integration of technology into the classroom requires thoughtful planning, teacher training, and a commitment to ongoing evaluation and improvement. As we move forward, it is crucial that we harness the power of technology to enhance learning experiences, while also nurturing the human elements of education that cannot be replicated by machines.

It's that time of the year again the time when thousands of students like me embark on the journey of preparing for the postgraduate entrance examination, commonly known as the "gaokao" in China. The gaokao is not just any ordinary exam. It is a make-or-break moment for many students, as it determines their future and opens up doors to prestigious universities and promising careers. The pressure is immense, and the competition is fierce. But amidst all the stress and sleepless nights, there is a glimmer of hope and determination in our eyes.Preparing for the gaokao is no easy task. It requires months of rigorous studying, countless practice exams, anda never-ending thirst for knowledge. We spend hours on end pouring over textbooks, memorizing formulas, and analyzingcomplex theories. We sacrifice our social lives, hobbies, and sometimes even our sanity, all in the pursuit of a higher score. But it's not just about studying hard; it's also about studying smart. We learn to develop effective study strategies, such as creating detailed study schedules, using mnemonic devices to remember key concepts, andseeking help from teachers and classmates. We becomeexperts at time management, learning how to balance our study time with breaks and relaxation to avoid burnout. The gaokao is not just a test of our academic abilities; it is also a test of our mental and emotional strength. We learn to cope with stress and anxiety, to stay focused and motivated even when the odds are against us. We develop resilience, perseverance, and a never-give-up attitude that will serve us well not just in the exam, but in life as well. And as the day of the gaokao approaches, we can't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. We know thatthis exam is just a stepping stone towards our dreams, but it is an important one nonetheless. We have put in the hard work, and now it's time to put our knowledge to the test. So, as I sit here, staring at the blank page in front of me, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The gaokao may be a daunting challenge, but it is also an opportunity for us to prove ourselves, to show the world what we are capable of. And no matter what the outcome may be, we know that we have given it our all, and that is something to be proud of.。

52. Directions:Write an essay of 160-200 words based on the following drawing. In your essay, you should1) describe the drawing briefly,2) explain its intended meaning, and then3) support your view with an example/examples.You should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)范文:As can be seen from the cartoon, different ideas may come from the same thing. In the picture, while trying to catch the upcoming soccer, the goal-keeper says to himself why it is so big. And, the striker simply thinks in a different way, that is why it is so small? What makes such a big contrary on the same tournament at the same moment? It is no doubt that they are facing the very same goal and experiencing the very same moment. However, the subjective views result in different impression on the same object. Many of us may still remember the story of a pony crossing the river, which we learned from the textbook in primary school. The squirrel tells him, the river is deep; and the cow tells him, the river is not deep at all. However, in the end, he tells himself a third answer. Therefore, it is not exaggerating to say that most of us are looking into the world with personal ideas. Subjective mental status may result in a really big difference in personal views, just like the goal-keeper and the striker in the drawing.A possible solution might be to face any situation as objectively as possible. If we realize this in an objective way, it would be good for us to deal with what we encounter in life, especially when we are in setbacks or facing difficulties.。

Directions:You live in a room in college which you share with another student. You find it very difficult to work there because your roommate always has friends visiting. He/She has parties in the room and sometimes borrows your things without asking you.Write a letter to the Accommodation Officer at the college and ask for a new room next term. You would prefer a single room. Explain your reasons.Dear Sir or Madam,I am writing to express/air dissatisfaction/disappointment/concern regarding accommodation. I would prefer to move into a single room next semester,as I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.I must explain that the reason for my dissatisfaction is my roommate’s incon siderate behavior. For one thing, his friends are constantly visiting him;for another,he regularly holds noisy parties. To solve this problem/surmount this difficulty/improve this situation/crack this hard nut,I hope to draw the attention of the authorities concerned. I am sure you will agree that the only solution is for me to move into a room of my own. Therefore,I would be grateful if you could find a single room for me,preferably not in the same building but as near to the college campus as possible. Directions:Study the following pictures carefully and write an essay in which you should1)describe the pictures briefly;2)interpret the social phenomenon reflected by them,and3)give your point of view.图略The cartoons vividly depict people in expanding numbers are engaged in open and rampant cheating in business. In the first drawing,a boy has no courage to have dinner in front of delicious foods in that there may exist pesticide pollution or poisonous elements in the foods. In the second picture, the administrative office, salesmen, breeding families andforage shops are laughing at the hanging of a poisonous duck.Professional dishonesty has a very damaging effect. In the first place, since cheating in business reveals the moral deficiencies as well as the humanity weakness of those businessmen who engage in it,the dishonest practice will ultimately exerts a perverse influence on the whole society. In the second place,it not only puts honest businessmen at a competitive disadvantage, encouraging those who did not cheat to adopt similar practices later, but undermines the very foundation of professional ethics in business. It is often painful to impose sanctions in a specific case. But it is worthwhile. For one thing,to eliminate professional dishonesty thoroughly, serious forms of punishment for a willful offense—a suspension of the offender from business—should be applied. For another, since the incentives to engage in cheating in business are mainly due to a lack of adequate precautions, drastic actions should be taken to prevent one form of cheating or another.。

In the year 2007 the English language examination for second-year university students in China presented a writing task that has since become a subject of much discussion and analysis among educators and language learning experts The prompt for this essay was deceptively simple asking students to write about their experiences learning English and the role it has played in their lives While on the surface this may have seemed like a straightforward assignment the responses revealed much deeper insights into the challenges and rewards of mastering a foreign language in the context of modern ChinaFor many of the students taking this exam English was not their first language nor even their second in a country with over 130 different dialects and minority languages represented across its vast territory Instead English was often a third or even fourth language that they were required to study as part of their academic curriculum beginning in middle school This meant that the relationship these young people had with English was often complex shaped by years of rote memorization grammar drills and high-stakes testing ratherthan organic communication and personal engagementAnd yet despite the difficulties inherent in learning a language so different from their native Mandarin Chinese the essay responses demonstrated a profound appreciation for the ways in which English had enriched their lives and opened up new opportunities As one student eloquently put it English has become a bridge connecting me to the world beyond my local community allowing me to engage with different cultures access information and resources and pursue academic and professional goals that would have been out of reach had I not devoted years to mastering this global tongueMany of the essays described the frustration and sense of inadequacy that came with stumbling through conversations with native English speakers or grappling with complex academic texts But they also spoke of the immense satisfaction that came with slowly chipping away at those linguistic barriers and the thrill of being able to express themselves fluently and confidently in a language that was not their own One student recalled the first time she was able to help a lost tourist find their way around the city using only English a moment she described as a major milestone in her language learning journeyBeyond the personal satisfaction however the essayists also highlighted the practical benefits that English proficiency hadafforded them access to better educational and career opportunities the ability to connect with people from all over the world and a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives Several mentioned how learning English had sparked an interest in travel and a desire to experience other countries firsthand something that would have been difficult if not impossible without that linguistic bridgeInterestingly many of the essays also touched on the role that English has played in shaping modern Chinese society and culture The ubiquity of English loanwords in the Chinese lexicon the prevalence of English signage and advertisements the emphasis placed on English education in schools all of these factors have had a profound impact on the daily lives of young people in China One student observed how knowing English had become a sort of social currency a marker of education and sophistication that could open doors both literally and figurativelyAt the same time the essayists acknowledged the complexities and contradictions inherent in Chinas relationship with the English language On the one hand it was seen as a symbol of modernity progress and engagement with the global community but on the other hand there was a lingering sense that an overreliance on English could threaten the primacy of the Chinese language and national identity This tension was palpable in many of the essays asthe students grappled with feelings of pride in their accomplishments as English learners tempered by a desire to preserve and celebrate their cultural heritageUltimately what emerged from this collection of essays was a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of the English language in contemporary China a portrait that defied simplistic notions of it as either a panacea or a threat Instead the essayists painted a complex picture of English as a tool for connection and opportunity but also as a source of anxiety and ambivalence one that is inextricably woven into the fabric of modern Chinese societyAs an educator I found these essays to be a fascinating window into the lived experiences of young people navigating the challenges and rewards of bilingualism in a rapidly changing world They served as a powerful reminder that language learning is not just about mastering vocabulary and grammar but about cultivating cultural awareness forging personal connections and finding one's voice in an increasingly interconnected global communityThe thoughtfulness and insight displayed in these 2007 English II essays suggests that the students who composed them were far more than just test-takers mechanically regurgitating information they were complex individuals grappling with weighty questions of identity belonging and the role of language in shaping ourunderstanding of ourselves and our place in the world Their words offer a compelling counterpoint to the reductive stereotypes that sometimes plague discussions of language education providing a rich and nuanced portrait of the true value of mastering a foreign tongue。

本书的总结性的知识都尽量用表格来体现,而在作文点评时还引入了Dr.Remarks(点评博士)Dr.Words(词汇博士)Dr.Tricks(技巧博士)三博士架构的创新形式,使同学们对于优秀范文的赏析有了更直观地领悟。

My Mother’s HandsOne evening, when mother was preparing supper, all of a sudden, she called me into the kitchen. After I rushed in, I saw blood dripping down from her cut finger. I immediately got the iodine and clumsily bandaged her. And when I noticed my mother’s hands—the hands which hadbrought up four children. Her hands were like the dry bark of an old oak tree, wrinkled, rough and hard. I could not believe that they were the hands of a lady in the early thirties. They looked like the hands of a woodsman.I knelt beside her and asked her how hands got like that. She caressed my face with her unhurt hand, and told me that it was the fault of the war. When the Japanese invaded our city, she and father fled into inland. There they were in a wretched plight, no money, no job, and no friends.Mother had to do every kind of work, such as laundering, knitting, and sewing. Father pawned and sold all their possessions simply for a few catties of rice. The Japanese continued their invasion, they continued to flee, death always hovering over them. Mother did so many hard—labor work that she had a breakdown and nearly died. The years passed like a long nightmare. Not until the Japanese surrendered did mother and father end their long suffering. After mother finished her story, I was very moved. I could hardly control me from falling. I kissed her hands that I loved better than any other softer, smoother hands in the world.
