People behind us were older;their children were in their late teens, and we didn’t see them or hear from them much.Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch. We would have invited their children if they had been of the same age. While our older children had parties the neighbor’s little kids would shout through the fence the entire time; we knew it was time to get a new fence. When we built our fence next to the old one, they not only paid nothing for it, but watched us have it built. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline (蹦床). She could only see the tops of their heads and couldn’t figure out who it was. Good people, just too much interest in us. Years later they rebuilt their houses and built a pretty fence between the houses next to the old one. They were not surprised that we didn’t want to pay for it. I have to admit their fence is much prettier than our wooden one.Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence. We have left ours in place. While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have fences between each of us. Only in this way can we protect our little privacy (隐私), as fences certainly do make good neighbors.36. When the author’s older children had a party, .A. his neighbor’s children also had a party as they didB. they would invite his neighbor’s children to attend itC. his neighbor’s children would shout behind the fenceD. his neighbor’s children would watch it through the window37. Why did the author’s home have a wooden fence built?A. The wooden fence looked more beautiful.B. With the fence his home could become safer.C. They didn’t want their little privacy to be known.D. The author’s family didn’t like their new neighbor.38. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The author’s neighbors all have built strong fences.B. Old people living behind liked children very much.C. The young neighbors wanted the author to pay for the fence.D. The young neighbors were very angry about the author’s ugly fence.39. We can guess from the passage that .A. the young mother of the house was interested in other families’ lifeB. the neighbor of the author started to live there when the author was very youngC. the author thinks that the fences destroy the friendship between the neighborsD. the author’s family was not a big one when the younger family moved hereBDuring an earthquake, you should need to know a thing or two on what to do. If the earthquake strikes while you’re inside a house, you should lie on the floor and take cover under a strong table or other furniture. If there is no furniture you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room. You should remain away from windows, glass walls, or anything that can fall.If you are in bed, stay still. Hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow (枕头) to safeguard your head. You may use a doorway or shelter but only when it is close to you. It should also be considered whether it is strong enough to deal with the load. Do not use lifts, even when they work. Electricity may go out at any time. Many injuries happen when people try to rush out. This means you ought to stay still in your house or perhaps wherever you are. When you are outdoors, you should be far away from buildings, power wires or lights. You should be in the open until the quake stops. Remember that many earthquake deaths outside the house come from debris (碎片), falling walls, flying glass and other falling objects. If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, you pull up to the side of the highway and stop as quickly as possible. You ought not to stop under trees, buildings or power wires. Don’t stop in the middle of the street since it could trouble others. When trapped, you shouldn’t move. Your mouth should be covered with a piece of clothing or handkerchief. Do not shout whenever possible. Shouting should be employed at last to get help from rescuers. This is because it is possible for you to breathe some dirty dust.40. If there is no furniture in the room you should stay .A. near the windowB. far from the doorC. in the center of the roomD. in the corner of the room41. What are you advised to do if you are in bed?A. The pair grew up together and finally became an attraction of the zoo.Back on the singles market: zoo officials are not clear about why the turtles have fallen out but they say that Bibi, the female, starts attacking her partner, biting off part of his shell.“But for no reason that anyone can discover they seem to have fallen out, they just can’t stand each other,” added Happ.It seems that it was Bibi, the female, who started the break-up.According to the newspaper The Austrian Times, staff at the zoo realized all was not well when Bibi attacked Poldi — biting off a chunk (厚片) of his shell. She launched further attacks on her partner until her partner was moved to a different location. The zoo even called in animal experts to try and reunite the couple with counseling but, so far, to no avail. In order to get them in a more loving mood, the experts tried to put some fun back into the relationship by getting them to play games together, but it has not worked.Happ told the newspaper, “It is very rare for animals who are a pair to fall apart after such a long per iod. We hope we can bring a reconciliation (和解) around,” she added.Keeping the animals apart is important as weighing in at 100 kilos each — if they wanted they could kill the other.Giant turtles have no teeth but instead have a horn-rimmed mouth and a powerful jaw which can cause serious damage.44. Why did the two giant turtles get separated?A. They attacked each other.B. They were too large for the cage.C. They couldn’t stand each other.D. The exact reason is unknown.45. What do we know about the two giant turtles?A. They used to fight a lot.B. They came from different zoos.C. They were of different ages.D. They used to live in peace.46. What can we infer from Happ’s words?A. It’s common for animals to break up.B. The two giant turtles will reunite.C. Animals that live long together seldom fall apart.D. The zoo officials will put the two giant turtles into a cage.DAnthony Marc Robles is a college wrestler (摔跤选手) that many people recognize. Do it hard, just make it possible, and I’ll not complain about the pain I have experienced. My spirit is unconquerable (不可征服的). Fearless, I will face each opponent, forI know I am capable. A deep-seated preference for night life and subways, the thinking goes, has driven the revitalization of urban cores across the U.S. over the last decade-plus.But there’s mounting evidence that millennials’ love of cities was a passing fling(放纵). Millennials don’t love cities any more than pr evious generations. The latest argument comes from Dowell Myers, an urban planning professor at USC.As they age, says Myers, millennials’ presence in cities, will “be evaporating(蒸发) through our fingers, if we don’t make some plans now.” That’s because millennials’ preference for cities will fade as they start families and become more established in their careers. It’s about more than aging, though. Demographer William Frey has been arguing for years that millennials have become ‘stuck’ in cities by the 2008 downturn and the following slow recovery, with poor job prospects and declining wages making it harder for them to afford to buy homes in suburbia.Myers, too, says observers have confused young people’s presence in cities with a preference for cities. Survey data shows that more millennials would like to be living in the suburbs than actually are. But the normal career and family cycles moving young people from cities into suburban houses have become, in Myers’ words, “a plugged-up drain.”But unemployment has finally returned to healthy lows (though participation rates and wages are still largely stagnant), which Myers says should finally increase mobility for millennials.Other trends among millennials, supposedly matters of lifestyle preference, have already turned out to have been driven mostly by economics. What was once deemed their broad preference for public transit may have always been a now-reversing inability to afford cars. Even decades-long trends towards marryinglater have been accentuated a s today’ s young people struggle for financial stability.Investors are already taking the idea that millennials will return to old behavior patterns seriously, putting more money into auto manufacturers and developers. But urban lifestyles, up to and including trendy bars, aren’t just hip—they’re a part of what powers a city’s economic engines, bringing people together to explore new ideas, create companies, and build careers. From the 1960s to the 1990s, we saw that suburbanization(城市郊区化) also means an economic and social hollowing out for cities. Now that the economic shackles are coming off today’s young city residents, cities that want to stay vibrant(充满生机的) have to figure out how to convince them—and their growing families—to stick around.1. Why are Millennials about to leave city?A. It is too expensive for them to buy apartment in cities.B. They find it difficult for to seek a god job in cities.C. It is easier to get married moving to the suburban.D. They are more confident with their economic situation.2. What does the author mean quoting Myer’s “a plugged-up drain"(para 5)?A. Millennials are reluctant to leave attractive cities.B. Millennials are stopped from moving to the suburbs.C. Millennials are unwilling to be cut off from the suburban.D. Millennials are afraid of another economic decline.3. How does the author feel about the suburbanization?A. sign of stable finance.B. A growth of health issuesC. A conflict of new ideas.D. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War Ⅱ these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as cars and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. Rather than other levels, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, entertainment, and fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On this level, a great percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more and more on taxes to pay government action against diseases, crime, and so on. At this stage, we may seek to ensure the health, safety and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.31.Altogether there are ________ levels of human wants.A.7 B.6 C.5 D.432.According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when he has ________.A.saved enough money B.grown dissatisfied with simple shelterC.satisfied his hunger D.learned to build houses33.It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War Ⅱ most Americans ________.A.were very rich B.lived in povertyC.had the good things on the first three levels D.did not own cars34.All of the following except ________ are related to “physical satisfactions”.A.a successful career B.a comfortable homeC.a good service D.a family car35.The main concern of man on the fourth level is ________.A.the more goods the better B.the more mental satisfaction the betterC.the more expensive items the better D.the more earnings the betterBA characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self- made man — the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or thecollege professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common labourer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or labourer of some sort. This attitude toward manual labour is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is well furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterwards; furthermore, the dinner will not only consist of something quickly and easily made from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds and painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction team on a highway in order to pay for his education. 36.From Paragraph 1,we can know that in America ________.A.people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manB.people can always rise to the top through their own effortsC.college professors win great respect from common workersD.people feel painful to mention their fathers as labourers37.According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because ________.A.servants in America are hard to getB.she takes pride in what she can do herselfC.she can hardly afford servantsD.it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food38.The underlined expression “wait on table” in the second paragraph means“ ________ ”.A.work in a furniture shop B.keep accounts for a barC.wait to lay the table D.serve customers in a restaurant39.Which of the following statements is not true?A.Usually the hostess in a family which can afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children is happy to cook.B.The husband may be ready to help his wife to wash dishes.C.In order to pay for the college education, young men have to work with their own hands.D.In America the couples are willing to share the housework.40.Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?A.A Respectable Self- made FamilyB.American Attitude Toward Manual LabourC.Characteristics of American CultureD.The Development of Manual LabourB卷Ⅳ.从右栏中选出左栏单词的意思(15题,15分)1.skillful (A)willing to give money to others or give them pleasure2.revolution (B)to travel through or examine an area to find out what is true3.protest (C)a happening, usually an important one4.confident (D)to set sb. free, to let news known, to express feelings5.awful (E)unable to use part of the body6.disabled (F)eager or anxious to do sth.7.explore (G)great social change, especially by force8.release (H)be good at doing sth. especially sth. that needs special ability9.struggle (I)be sure that you can do sth. successfully10.generous (J)terrible, shocking11.promote (K)trust, a feeling that sb. or sth. is good or able12.train (L)to say or do sth. publicly to show disagreement13.keen (M)a long hard fight to get freedom14.event (N)to teach someone or be taught the skill of15.belief (O)to help sth. to develop and be successfulⅤ.用方框中所给词的适当形式填空(10题,10分)1.2.He was ________ to everybody with money.3.The residents ________ about the noise and dust from the construction site.4.She cut the melon into six ________ pieces.5.The look on his face said that he was ________ of success.6.When people go shopping, they have to choose between ________ and price.7.After the ________ there were many who wanted food and shelter.8.He died ________ after having lived well all his life.9.At first, Mike lied to me. AI have many new teachers in high school, but Lori Runkle, my English Language and Composition teacher, is my favorite teacher.Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist新(闻记者 ). Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the United States, she has introduced many helpful journalistic writing skills to me.Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to listen to a journalist's speech, which helped me better understand current events 时(事 ).Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are required to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. It requires a lot of deep thinking and I really learn quite a lot from it.I love Ms. Runkle very much. She not only helps me to get good scores, butalso acts as a good friend and always gives me advice on life.21.After class, the author _____.A. seldom sees Ms. RunkleB. talks with Ms. Runkle quite a lotC. enjoys introducing Ms. Runkle to her friendsD. often invites Ms. Runkle to different activities22. We can infer from the text that Ms. Runkle is _____.A. friendly and helpfulB. kind and humorousC. clever andactive D. strict and boring23.The author's favorite part of Ms. Runkle's class is when Ms. Runkle _____.A. tells them how to get good scoresB. asks them questions about the worldC. asks them to describe current events24.What is the author's purpose of writing the text?A. To express how much she misses Ms. Runkle.B. To look back on her special high school life.C. To describe an unforgettable teacher.D. To show what makes a good teacher.BThe English language has a lot of words which can be used in manydifferent ways and in many different expressions. One such example is the wordmatter. In fact, matter can mean just aboutanything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.Let's get to the heart of the matter— a matter of principle (原则 ).If someone says that you owe 欠() him $50, but you don't, a friend might say,“ Well, you could pay him the $50. It's not that much moneyThen. you won't have tohear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It's a matter of principle. There is another way to use the wordmatter. But be careful with your choice ofwords. If you ask someone,“ What's the matter?” , it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying,“ What's the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude 粗(鲁的 ). In fact, when you say,“ What's thematter with you?” , you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.Another expression that could sound rude is to say,“ It doesn't matter to me. Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it.Let's say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That personanswers with,“ It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude. But saying,“ Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn't matter to me.” do sound rude. In this situation,“ it doesn't matter”-goingshows(随you和的are). easy No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. Andit's only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use ofmatter.25.We can infer from the text that the word matter _____.A. has a wide useB. can mean moneyC. is the most used English wordD. has the most different expressions26.What is the author's suggestion in Paragraph 4?27. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common labourer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or labourer of some sort. This attitude toward manual labour is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is well furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterwards; furthermore, the dinner will not only consist of something quickly and easily made from contents of various cans and a cake ora pie bought at the nearby bakery.
