(; aPart II Reading ComprehensionPassage 1In Alexandria, Virginia, the two thousand students at T.C. Williams High School started classes last month in a new building. It was built as a ―green‖ school based on requirements from the United States Green Building Council. The council is a nonprofit organization made up of building industry leaders. It has a rating system for buildings called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED.In 2001, there were four schools asking for LEED certification. Now there are four hundred, including T.C. Williams. So far, fifty-eight schools have been recognized for meeting the requirements. These include protecting natural areas and limiting the amount of chemicals in building materials. They also include better lighting and improved indoor air quality. Buildings are also rated on how well they use energy and water, and on things like the use of recycling programs. At T.C. Williams, one example of green design can be seen in the many windows that let in natural light. Students say the sunny rooms help them stay awake during class.A rooftop garden is designed to provide storm water control and help keep the building cool in the sun. And an underground tank can store 1,700,000 liters of rainwater for air conditioning and other systems. The new building cost about 90,000,000 dollars to build. It stands next to the old T.C. Williams building, which officials say will slowly be taken apart and recycled. T.C. Williams High School is still waiting for the final part of the LEED certification process. Schools receive points for the number of requirements they meet. Buildings are rated silver, gold or platinum.Around the country, concerns about limited budgets (预算) for public schools sometimes lead to objections to investing in “green”schools. But the Green Building Council points to a report by Capital E, a Washington D. C. company that serves the clean energy industry. Capital E examined the cost of thirty ―green‖ schools in the United States. It says the average cost was only two percent higher compared to a traditional school. And it says this extra cost is small compared to the savings over time from lower energy and water costs and healthier students.41. The United States Green Building Council aims to __________.A. collect money for ―green‖ schoolsB. construct ―green‖ buildings on its ownC. promote the construction of‖green‖schoolsD. evaluate the ―greenness‖ of any school building42. We know from the passage that ____________.A. LEED evaluates the buildings at four different levelsB. Capital E designed many requirements for ―green‖ schoolsC. T. C. Williams High School has received LEED certificationD. LEED is provided by the United States Green Building Council43. The underlined word nonprofit in Paragraph 2 means ____________.A. expensiveB. cheapC. money-makingD. non-money-making44. The underlined word they in Paragraph 3 refers to ____________.A. the requirementsB. the natural areasC. the building materialsD. the amount of chemicals45. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Green schools cost more than traditional ones.B. Capital E is devoted to the clean green industry.C. Green schools will have more benefits in the long term.D. Limited budgets cause a disagreement on ―green‖ schools.Passage 2Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (pocket money). The purpose is to let children learn from experiences at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance. In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands a choice between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowances can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance.A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest. Compounding works by paying interest on interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will earn two cents in the first year. The second year, the money will earn two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up.46. Giving an allowance, parents should consider all the following EXCEPT______.A. how much the child should get each timeB. whether the child has made a budgetC. where the money really goesD. how often a child can get it47. According to the passage, how can a child learn to have a budget?A. Through their own experiences.B. Through parents‘ instruction.C. By spending allowance.D. By receiving allowance.48. The author of the passage holds the opinion that ____________.A. what children learn by handling allowances may be beneficial in the futureB. children can learn to set up their own business with their allowancesC. keeping allowances in the bank is the best choice for childrenD. it isn‘t a good i dea to pay children to do housework at home49. The underlined words ―compound interest‖ in the passage probably means ______________.A. increasing curiosity to learn how to make more moneyB. stronger power to hold one‘s attention to saving moneyC. money paid by the bank on your original money and the gain from itD. the sum of money that you keep in the bank50. What is the best title for the passage?A. Be Generous To Pay Your ChildrenB. Be Wise To Avoid Financial MistakesC. Saving Allowances Is Good To ChildrenD. Allowances Help Children Learn About MoneyPassage 3A boy aged eight who suffered brain damage at birth has spoken his first words after making friends with a dolphin (海豚). Well-wishers raised more than $10,000 to send Nikki Brice to Miami for treatment at a therapy(治疗) center where disabled youngsters are encouraged to swim with dolphins. After eight y ears of silence, Nikki‘s mother, Tabitha was astonished to hear him say ―in‖ as she helped him out of the pool where he had been swimming with four dolphins including their most famous, Flipper. Since that first breakthrough, eight days ago, he has learnt to say ―please‖ and ―duck‖.Family, friends and celebrities including the Spice Girls, the musician Ben Elton and film-actress Deborah Kerr helped to raise the money for him to spend nearly three weeks at the Human Dolphin Therapy Center. The center uses 40-minute sessions (治疗时段) with trained dolphins alongside conventional therapies. The conventional therapies included the usual one-to-one speech therapy sessions.Although Nikki had been nervous, his mother said that he soon enjoyed playing with the dolphins. Mrs. Brice said, ―On the third day he was swimming with the dolphin. We hadn‘t been there for long when Nikki was told to get out of the water, at the end of the session, and he stood very quietly at the edge of the tank.‖“Nikki must have thought he w asn‘t going to be allowed to go swimming with the dolphins again because he suddenly pointed at the water and said ‗in‘. He was telling us he wanted to get backinto the water. We just stood there in shock because it was so unexpected. Once we got over it we quickly told him he could go in again and he soon cheered up. For years, I have hoped to hear Nikki speak.‖The person in charge of Nikki‘s treatment is David Nathanson, who pioneered dolphin therapy 20 years ago. The center claims to have helped more than 1,000 children to overcome problems, from brain damage to learning difficulties. However, the reasons behind are still unknown.51.
