The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea tells a simple story in straightforward fashion :Cuba's old fisher named Santiago continuous skiff didn't catch fish for 84 days, but his perseverance, finally caught a big marlin. The fish is too big to be caught immediately. He fought against the big marlin for three days and nights ,overcoming countless difficulties , and he managed to kill the fish and bound it to his skiff ultimately.However,on the way back, he was attacked by a group of sharks. Being exhausted with wounds, he came back to the shore with the huge fish spine.Briefly speaking,The Old Man and the Sea is about a man who's heroic by virtue of his personal struggle .

The old man Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea is a character seen in many perspectives,as a hero ,an ordinary fisher,an unlucky man,and a wise man.From my standpoint,he is regarded as a person of motivation ,hope and endeavor.He always remained clear-headed and is firm his faith no matter what kind of difficulties he came across.The majority of the book is devoted to describe the details about the struggle with the sharks.As we can image,an armless old man in really tough circumstances,confronted a group of sharks which are enormous and ferocious , showing the perseverance and tenacity of confidence in the victory.What impressed me most is the reaction of Santiago when he lost the fish slice by slice.Although

he gained nothing finally,he still the winner in my mind.He did not surrender to the density and not finish his journey with regret.As the word by the old man goes:" a man can be destroyed but never defeated."

The main character in the novel Santiago became the famous code hero in literature. The work reveals the spirit of the man, people's wisdom, firmness and persistency. Due to its success,Hemingway who created The Old Man and the Sea winned the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature .
