采用两谐振器之间的耦合效应,减 小了器件的尺寸。
在 HFSS 中建立滤波器模型并仿真,滤波器的中心频率为 1.07 GHz,带宽为 428 MHz,回波损 耗大于 22 dB,2 f0 处抑制大于 45 dB,整体尺寸仅为 6.5 mm×4 mm×0.9 mm。
在此滤波器上模拟表贴变容二极管 来调节两个谐振器中的电容实现中心频率可调。
结果表明,滤波器的中心频率在 1.05~1.23 GHz 内连续变化,在 中心频率变化过程中插损始终小于 1 dB,回波损耗始终大于 15 dB,2f0 处抑制大于 45 dB。

The filter model was established and simulated by HFSS. The center frequency of the filter is 1.07 GHz, the bandwidth is 428 MHz, the return loss is more than 22 dB, the attenuation at the 2 f0 is greater than 45 dB, and the overall size is 6.5 mm×4 mm×0.9 mm. To simulate the surface paste varactor diode to adjust the capacitance of two resonators, the center frequency of the filter is adjustable. The results show that the center frequency of the filter is continuously changed from 1.05 GHz to 1.23 GHz. The insertion loss is always less than 1dB during the change of the center frequency, the return loss is always greater than 15 dB, and the suppression at the 2f0 is greater than 45 dB. TUNABLE BANDPASS FILTER FOR ALL HF BANDS (160m-10m)Ing Tasic Sinisa –Tasa YU1LM/QRP GQRP10091At the beginning of 80 I worked with stations which have serious problems with IMD products such as FT101B, this was very noticeable on lower bands 7 ,3.5 and 1.8 MHz . In literature I saw very simple tunable bandpass filter designed by M. MartinDJ7VY in CQ-DL 7/84 which cure IMD problems substantially. Filter have 3 coils , double variable capacitors and few toggle switches for the frequency and bandwidth selection. Filter behaves as a tunable peak filer and insertion loss is changing very much with changing operation frequency from less than 1dB to 15dB. Bandwidth and selectivity is changing very much with operating frequency and because of that it was not suitable for use in transmitting systems. When you like to build HF bandpass filters especially for 50Ohm system problem is how to design them that the realization have to be a simple as possible. Without appropriate measuring equipments adjustment will be a nightmare especially with unknown coils or coils with taps. I designed simple tunable bandpass filter for whole HF and it is one of my favorite RF BRICK-s for design on the table. It was designed and realized with the next design goal:1.All HF frequencies (1.8-30MHz)2.Insertion loss in range to max 3dB3.Selectivity at harmonic related band in range of 30dB4.input/output impedance 50 Ohm5.coils with fixed inductance without tapsTunable bandpass filter realization is very simple and compact made in one box based on PCB soldering ,it is important to notice that double variable capacitors(both connection) are isolated from the ground. Inductors are made with toroid core but I tried BP filter with fixed molded chokes and results are similar except little bigger insertion loss (see example diagram for filter 3.5 MHz). It is possible because working Q in banpass filter is small and sensitivity to component values is small too. It is possible to realized HF filter with only 2 coils (for example toroid T50- ) with taps but it is not recommend for un experienced builders. 超宽带微带带通滤波器的设计

恒定绝对带宽的紧凑型可重构双频带通滤波器包晓蕾【摘要】A compact dual-band bandpass filter (BPF ) based on stepped impedance resonator (SIR ) and defected-feeding structure is investigated in this paper.The SIR with T-stub centrally loaded provides more degrees of freedom to adjust the dual-band resonant frequencies.By combining the SIR with the defected-feeding structure and adjusting their dimensions,the absolute bandwidth can be easily controlled.Transmission zero is derived through simulation due to the combination of SIR and defected -feeding structure.Finally,simulation results show the second passband switched among 1.55GHz,1.75GHz and 2.05GHz with a constant absolute bandwidth of 230MHz ± 5.6%,and the first passband fixed at 0.90GHz with a constant absolute bandwidth of 32MHz.The measurement of the fabricated example shows good agreement with the simulation.%本文研究了一种基于阶梯阻抗谐振器(SIR)和缺陷馈电结构的小型双频带通滤波器(BPF).具有T型中央加载的SIR可以更自由地调整双频谐振频率,SIR和缺陷馈电结构组合,并进行阶数调整,可以很容易控制绝对带宽,仿真得到传输零点.最后,仿真结果显示,恒定绝对带宽在230MHz±5.6%的情况下,第二通带可以在1.55GHz,1.75GHz和2.05GHz之间切换,恒定绝对带宽为32MHz的情况下,第一通带稳定在0.90GHz.实际加工的滤波器测量结果与仿真结果吻合较好.【期刊名称】《安徽师范大学学报(自然科学版)》【年(卷),期】2017(040)006【总页数】6页(P563-568)【关键词】紧凑型;双频带通滤波器(BPF);阶梯阻抗谐振器(SIR);恒定绝对带宽【作者】包晓蕾【作者单位】上海电子信息职业技术学院通讯与信息工程学院,上海 201411【正文语种】中文【中图分类】TN911随着无线通信系统的快速发展(例如,无线局域网(WLAN),全球移动通信系统(GSM),第三代(3G),第四代(4G),全球微波接入互操作性(WiMax),等等).双频通带滤波器(BPF)已经引起了很多关注[1-6].近年来,已经使用阶梯式阻抗谐振器(SIR)的结构实现双频通带滤波器,Makimoto和Yamashita分析了SIR的基本理论,通过控制SIR的阻抗和长度比,可以获得想要的工作频率[7].基于基础理论,一些文章中出现了一些新结构的SIR.Zhang和Sun使用新耦合方案的U形SIR来减少插入损耗[8].采用两个具有缺陷接地结构(DGS)的SIR组成双频带通滤波器,表现出良好的高通带性能[9].并提出了由开环谐振器实现的双频通带滤波器[10-12],以及由两个级联三重(CT)单元组成的双频带通滤波器[13].RF可重配置双频带滤波器正在成为一个热门研究课题,它可以显著减小现代多频带系统的总体尺寸和复杂性.恒定分数带宽和恒定绝对带宽(ABW)是不同应用的频率可重配置滤波器中的非常重要的特征.以前大多数工作集中在调整中心频率,在保持恒定绝对带宽方面研究较少.有学者采用机械电容器来调节滤波器的频率,通过在相邻的滤波器谐振器之间设置可变耦合衰减器来调谐带宽[14].并引入双模谐振滤波器保持ABW恒定[15,16],证明了混合电磁耦合方案可以控制带宽[17].在本文中,提出了具有容易控制的第一通带和可重构的第二通带特性的双频通带滤波器.预测第二通带在1.55GHz,1.75GHz和2.05GHz之间切换,改变由T型中央加载的SIR尺寸即可得到.通过改变零欧姆电阻器的位置,可以方便地将第二通带的三个中心频率调谐到期望值,因此本文的滤波器结构提供了更多的自由度来实现可调谐性.将缺陷馈电结构与加载SIR的T型组合,在两个通带之间产生传输零点,从而改善了选择性能.利用缺陷馈电结构调整,可以很容易地控制绝对带宽.去掉多余电路,通带中的低插入损耗性能得到改善,尺寸也更紧凑.为了验证所提出的方法,我们优化设计、制造并测量了可重构双频带通滤波器,仿真和测量结果证明了有效性.谐振器的基本结构如图1(a)所示.由于结构是对称的,可以采用偶模式和奇模式分析获得谐振频率.对于奇模和偶模等效电路,输入阻抗为Zino=jZ2tanθZine=Z2其中Z1和Z2分别是相应传输线的特性阻抗,ZinT是T型负载的输入阻抗.为了简化分析,使内线和外线的电长度相等,定义θ=β1l1=β2l2. 输入阻抗ZinT由下式给出ZinT=-jZ3为了减小谐振的大小,电长度θ小于π/4.由式(1)得出,奇模式谐振频率为fodd=其中l1是物理长度,v1是内线中的相速度. 由式(4)可以看出,当确定l1和v1时,奇模式谐振频率取决于Z2和Z1的比值.偶模式谐振由式(2)得出,feven由式(6)的解确定tan2θ-(1+Z2/Z1)|ZinT|tanθ-Z2/Z1=0tan()=(1+Z2/Z1)+式(6)中,当阶梯阻抗谐振器固定时,受到T型尺寸的影响,偶模式谐振频率由|ZinT|,决定,因此改变T型加载的SIR的尺寸将产生各种偶模谐振频率,而奇模谐振频率不受影响.基于以上分析,本文提出一种双频带通滤波器的结构,由T型加载的SIR和缺陷馈电结构组成,图2所示.该设计中,采用SIR的基本奇模谐振频率作为第一通带频率,将偶模谐振频率作为第二通带频率.为减小尺寸,将谐振器折叠,由两条特性阻抗为50Ω的的微带线路馈电.图3表示T型加载SIR的通带特性和不同参数的频率的变化趋势.预测中心频率的第一通带可以通过优化L2来设计. 如图3(a)所示,L2越小,第一中心频率越高. 实验发现,具有T型尺寸的第二通带的变化对第一通带几乎没有影响.如图3(b)所示,随着L3或L4减小,T型尺寸变小,产生更高的中心频率fo2.显然,第二通带表现出1.88-2.29GHz的调谐范围,而第一通带在运行过程中保持在0.96GHz.在1.88GHz和2.29GHz之间的调谐范围,两个通带的插入损耗都小于1dB,其回波损耗分别大于-20dB.因此,在设计中使用缺陷馈电结构与SIR组合,在主要两个频带之间出现新的通带和传输零点. 同时,新的通带可以通过改变缺陷馈电结构的尺寸来移动,如图4所示.当新的通带和第二通带合并时,可以实现双带BPF的调谐中的中心频率和绝对带宽.如图5所示,随着L7的减小,绝对带宽变窄,位于低阻带的发射零点向第二通带移动,而L7的变化对高阻带处的传输零点几乎没有影响.基于以上分析,我们优化设计了可重构双频带BPF滤波器,其第二通带具有预定义的恒定绝对带宽,第一通带固定.图6为用SIR和基于六个开关的缺陷馈电结构来改变T型尺寸的示意图.根据六个开关的不同状态分成三种组合,状态1:S3断开,S4断开,S6断开,其它接通;状态2:S2断开,S4断开,S6断开,其它接通;状态3:S1断开,S2断开,S5断开,其它接通,相应的S参数如图7所示.在实际应用中,用零欧姆电阻作连接开关.由图7可以看出,第二通带的中心频率在1.55GHz,1.75GHz和2.05GHz之间切换,恒定绝对带宽230MHz和第一通带在调谐过程中保持恒定.随着六个开关的位置改变,将获得其他三个频率,因此所提出的结构提供更多的自由度来实现可调谐性.所提出的可调谐双频带滤波器在单个谐振器结构内集成了两个通带,不仅避免了额外损耗,还实现了尺寸的紧凑. 另外,它大大简化了谐振器的组装和集成,从而节省了时间和成本.在该设计中,所有尺寸选择如下:L0=39.94mm,L1=19.5mm,L2=16.2mm,L3=9mm,L4=5.4mm,L5=5mm,L6=26 mm,L7=13.5mm,W0=1.14mm,W1=0.6mm,W2=2mm,W3=2mm,W4=0.39m m,g1=g1=0.2mm.设计结束后,采用Ansoft HFSS V13进行仿真,用Agilent矢量网络分析仪N5230A进行测量,并制作了紧凑型可重构滤波器,如图8所示.图9比较了仿真和测量结果.制作滤波器的第二通带在1.55/1.75/2.05GH之间切换,3dB绝对带宽为230MHz.所有配置测量到的带内最大插入损耗为2.16/2.18/1.74 dB,其中包含连接器的损耗,带内回波损耗优于-10 dB.第一通带固定在0.91GHz,其3dB绝对带宽约为32MHz.在两个通带之间产生传输零点可以提高通带选择性并提高隔离度.测量与仿真的偏差主要来自连接器和有限衬底的反射.整体尺寸约为20mm×44mm.表1表示滤波器特性与开关配置之间的关系.表2对提出的可重构BPF与其他可重构BPF的性能进行了比较.可以看出,与其他滤波器设计相比,该滤波器设计可以提供独立的可调谐双带通带特性,具有小尺寸和低插入损耗.在本文中,提出了一种基于T型加载SIR和缺陷馈电结构的紧凑可重构双带通滤波器. 通过控制T型尺寸可以方便地将第二通带调谐到期望的值,几乎不影响第一通带.所制作的第二通带实现了230MHz±5.6%的3dB带宽,这可以被明确地看作是ABW.此外,在两个通带之间存在传输零点,这改善了裙部选择性.该设计方法适用于可选择的多频带应用,相关滤波器已经实现.其良好的性能,平面结构和紧凑的尺寸对无线通信也很有吸引力.【相关文献】[1] SUN S, YANG S, WU B, et al. 带通是让某一个范围的频率通过,滤除其余频率。
如高通滤波器+低通滤波器可组成带通滤波器。
它大体分为模拟带通滤波器和数字带通滤波器.模拟带通滤波器一般是用电路元件(如电阻、电容、电感)来构成我们所需要的频率特性电路。
模拟带通滤波器的原理是通过对电容、电阻和电感参数的配置,使得模拟滤波器对基波呈现很小的阻抗,而对谐波呈现很大的阻抗,这样当负载电流信号通过该模拟带通滤波器的时候就可以把基波信号提取出来。
目前,有些有源滤波器利用模拟电路实现带通滤波器检测负载电流的基波分量,并且在实际中得到了应用。
但是,模拟带通滤波器也有一些自身的缺点。
这是由于模拟滤波器的中心频率对电路元件(如电容,电阻,电感)的参数十分敏感,较难设计出合适的参数,而且电路元件的参数会随外界环境的干扰发生变化,这会导致中心频率的偏移,影响滤波结果的准确性。
数字带通滤波器就是用软件来实现上面的滤波过程,可以很好地克服模拟滤波器的缺点,数字带通滤波器的参数一旦确定,就不会发生变化,只要电网的波动频率在我们设计的范围之内,就可以比较好地提取出基波分量。
数字滤波器根据其类型可以分为IIR型和FIR型。
PIR型只有零点,不容易像IIR型那样取得比较好的通带与阻带特性.所以,在一般的设计中选用IIR型。
IlR型又可以分成Butterworth型滤波器,Chebyshev I型滤波器,Chcbyshev Ⅱ型滤波器和椭圆型滤波器等。
滤波器是具有频率选择作用的电路或运算处理系统。
按所处理信号形式不同,滤波器可分为模拟滤波器与数字滤波器两类;按功能滤波器可分为低通、高通、带通与带阻四类。
滤波器主要特性参数包括:1) 特征频率滤波器的频率参数主要有:①通带截频fp=ωp/2π为通带与过渡带的边界点,在该点信号增益下降到一个人为规定的下限。
②阻带截频fx=ωx/2π为阻带与过渡带的边界点,在该点信号衰耗(增益的倒数)下降到一个人为规定的下限。

近年来,随着新材料和新的集成技术的发展,滤波器的设计方法和实现形式也有了很大的进步,特别是基于小型化、低成本以及集成化的考虑,采用平面印刷技术的微带线滤波器有了长足的发展,并得到广泛应用。
但是由于微带线滤波器色散和衰减等问题,在Ku及以上波段,其使用受到了限制。
波导滤波器的Q 值高,其在Ku及以上波段应用广泛。
然而波导滤波器结构是由腔体的不连续变化结构组成,这些不连续变化结构在工业加工中的误差难以控制,后期需进行大量工作调试滤波器性能 [6-10]。
悬置微带线滤波器通过将薄的介质板悬置在腔体中来实现,综合了上面两种滤波器实现形式的优势[11-16],具有插入损耗小和集成度高的特点。

Tunable High-Q N-Path Band-Pass Filters: Modeling and VerificationAmir Ghaffari,Student Member,IEEE,Eric A.M.Klumperink,Senior Member,IEEE, Michiel C.M.Soer,Student Member,IEEE,and Bram Nauta,Fellow,IEEEAbstract—A differential single-port switched-RC N-pathfilter with band-pass characteristic is proposed.The switching fre-quency defines the center frequency,while the RC-time and duty cycle of the clock define the bandwidth.This allows for high-Q highly tunablefilters which can for instance be useful for cognitive ing a linear periodically time-variant(LPTV)model, exact expressions for thefilter transfer function are derived.The behavior of the circuit including non-idealities such as maximum rejection,spectral aliasing,noise and effects due to mismatch in the paths is modeled and verified via measurements.A simple RLC equivalent circuit is provided,modeling bandwidth,quality factor and insertion loss of thefilter.A4-path architecture is realized in65nm CMOS.An off-chip transformer acts as a balun, improvesfilter-Q and realizes impedance matching.The differen-tial architecture reduces clock-leakage and suppresses selectivity around even harmonics of the clock.Thefilter has a constant 3dB bandwidth of35MHz and can be tuned from100MHz up to1GHz.Over the whole band,IIP3is better than14dBm, dBm and the noisefigure is3–5dB,while the power dissipation increases from2mW to16mW(only clocking power). Index Terms—Band-passfilter,CMOS,cognitive radio,commu-tated capacitors,frequency translatedfilter,high linearity,high-Q, inductorlessfilter,linear periodically time variant circuit,LPTV, N-pathfilter,software-defined radio,tunablefilter.I.I NTRODUCTIONI N software-defined radio(SDR)and cognitive radio trans-ceivers,programmability is not only desired in the digital back-end,but also for analog front-end functions.A major chal-lenge for such radios is the realization of an RF band-passfilter, with tunable center frequency over a wide frequency span.For cognitive radio applications in the TV-bands,relatively few and rather narrow spectral holes may exist between strong incum-bent TV transmitter signals[1].To reject the strong signals in order to avoid blocking of the receiver,such afilter should have very high linearity,high compression point but also very high Q(e.g.for10MHz bandwidth around500MHz). inductors is poor and coils take large area.Q-enhanced techniques[2]–[4]can improvefilter quality factor but degrade linearity and noise.Thus alternative tunable filters without inductors are highly wanted.Inductor-less tunablefilters based on periodically time variant networks have been addressed in literature under different names such as N-pathfilters,sampled datafilters, commutated capacitors,etc.[5]–[11].Discrete-time switched capacitor N-pathfilters are probably best known[8],but here we focus on their continuous-time predecessors.Fig.1shows a block diagram of an N-pathfilter composed of identical linear time-invariant(LTI)networks with impulse response and2frequency mixers(or modulators),driven by time/phase shifted versions of the clock and.The time shift between two successive paths is,where is the pe-riod of the mixer clock.If the LTI networks exhibit a low-pass characteristic around DC,the mixing results in a band-pass around the mixing frequency.Simply put,the input signal is down-converted to baseband,filtered by the LTI network and then up-converted again to the original band of.The center frequency is determined by the mixing frequency,insensitive tofilter component values.A high mixing frequency combined with a narrow low-passfilter bandwidth allows for a very high filter Q.While time-continuous N-pathfilters have been proposed for kHz operating frequencies in the1960s[6],they seem to have been largely forgotten until recently.CMOS technology now al-lows N-pathfilters to work at TV-band RF frequencies[9],[10] and even receiver.This paper aims to model and verify N-pathfilter ing linear periodically time-variant(LPTV)anal-ysis,exact expressions for the frequency response of differential N-pathfilters are derived.In[7]state-space analysis was used to derive the steady state and transient response for a single-ended N-pathfilter,which is however not directly applicable to our dif-ferential architecture.We will derive one set of equations that characterizesfiltering but also possible imperfections like har-monic folding,noise and the effects of the clock phase imbal-ance and mismatch.Moreover,an equivalent RLC tank circuit will be derived to approximate N-pathfilter behavior around the center frequency.Finally,we will verify the model via extended experimental results compared to[10].In Section II,we will derive the differential N-pathfilter architecture starting from Fig.1and then analyze its transfer function in Section III.Section IV presents basic characteristics of the differential N-pathfilter.Its chip implementation is discussed in Section V and Section VI covers the measurement and verification versus the model.II.N-P ATH F ILTERWe will now derive the differential N-pathfilter from Fig.1,where we aim for a high-linearity implementation using MOS-switches as passive mixers,and RC low-passfilters[see Fig.2(a)].Furthermore we will try to develop some intuitive understanding of thefilter behavior.A.Single Ended Switched RC N-Path FilterFig.2(c)shows a multi-phase clocking scheme for the switches with non-overlapping on-times.Thus no charge ex-change between capacitors can occur.For this reason and since a resistor is a memory-less element,it can be shared by all paths and shifted in front of them[Fig.2(b)].Moreover,if the clocks as a highly linear multiphase passive mixer[12],[13].To intuitively understand thefilter behavior of Fig.2(b)it is useful to model it as a two-step process:1)the input signal expe-riences down-conversion and low-passfiltering passing through the switches to the capacitors;2)the same switches up-convert thefiltered capacitor voltages to the output node.Another way to understand thefiltering is to realize that at any moment one and only one capacitor is connected to the output node.If we assume that the time constant,the output voltage will be the average of the input voltage over the time that the capacitor“looks at”.If the frequency of is equal to the switching frequency,a particular capacitor will periodically ob-serve the same part of the input waveform during every period. As each capacitor sees another part,the result is a staircase ap-proximation of,see Fig.2(d)(4-path example).In fact,the capacitors experience a steady DC voltage and,infirst order ap-proximation,conduct no current.If the input frequency deviates from the clock frequency the signal portion seen by a capacitor will“travel over the period”and the capacitors experience an AC voltage(with).Thus the capacitors conduct current while switches are on and the average voltages on the capacitors becomes closer to zero.Consequently signals at input frequen-cies below or above the switching frequency will be suppressed with an amount depending on the offset from the switching fre-quency,on-time of the switch and RC time.B.Differential Switched RC N-Path FilterIf we repeat the analysis for input signals around the har-monics of the clock frequency,we alsofind non-zero average values.Thisfits to the comb-like characteristic of N-pathfil-ters[5],i.e.,its repetitive selectivity around harmonics of the switching frequency.The differential architecture of Fig.3aims to cancel the even harmonic responses.Each path is differen-tial-in and differential-out,but contains one grounded capac-itor connected to two anti-phase driven switches.A4-phase 25%-duty-cycle clock provides all required clocks(see Fig.3). Now,for input signals around the even harmonics of the clockfrequency,no net charge is stored on the capacitors in steady state and no up-converted signal appears at the output.III.A NALYSISTo model the behavior of the N-pathfilter quantitatively,we will now apply LPTV state space analysis[14],[15]to derive the exact shape of the transfer function of a differential N-path filter.A.State Space Analysis of LPTV CircuitsFor an LPTV network which is periodic with the frequency ,the output spectrum is related to the input spectrum as[16](1) where represents the shifted version of the input spectrum to account for frequency translation(mixing),while describes the spectral shaping(filtering)properties of an LPTV network.To simplify analysis,we make two assumptions:1)the switches are ideal,i.e.,their off-impedance is infinite and on-impedance is zero;2)switching occurs instantaneously.The time interval is divided into portions(is the number of the states)and each portion identified by can be represented as,and(see Fig.4).During each interval there is no change in the state of the switches and the network turns to an LTI system.The state equations for interval can be two capacitors are connected to the differential output through two switches,which are activated with the same phase of the input clock.The resulting time-domain output signal is the superposition of will now derivefilter characteristics from(11).IV.C HARACTERISTICS OF A D IFFERENTIAL N-P ATH F ILTER A.Filtering and Harmonic Folding Back EffectsFor an ideal N-pathfilter we assume,where is the duty cycle of the multiphase clock.Analysis of(11)shows that is undefined for,but we can take the limit of when approaches con-tinuously to zero tofind.Moreover,in deriving(11)we assumed(non-overlapped switching).When ,there are periodic time intervals that all the switches are off and the output signal is tracking the input signal(instead of the voltages on the capacitors).The output spectrum function from(12)and the sim-ulated results applying Spectre RF PSS-PAC is shown,whichfit completely on top of each other.Fig.6shows band-passfiltering around the switching frequency,for this case with1.8dB inser-tion loss.However,there are also response peaks around odd harmonics of the switching frequency,related to repetitive poles in the denominator of(12).Thanks to the differential architec-ture,peaking around even harmonics does not occur.From(11) we see that for whereand is zero for other values of.Thus thefilter not only shows a comb-filter characteristic,but also“folding back”from input frequencies around to the desired band around .The strongest terms which result in down-conversion in a 4-pathfilter are shown in Fig.7.For instance,renders non-zero,modeling folding from and to (both with frequency shift).For an8-path architecture the first folding back will happen from.In general,increasing the number of paths will increase the distance between and thefirst folded component around.Often,a low-pass pre-filter will be needed in front of the N-pathfilter to sufficiently suppress harmonic folding.For radio receiver applications,the pre-filter requirements depend on specific blocker scenarios.In fact the folded back power from blockers to the desired band and the amount of degradation in Fig.7.around the switching frequency for a4-pathfilter.This deter-mines the back from odd harmonics of the switching frequency MHz.Fig.8.N-pathfilter with switch resistance.the sensitivity of the receiver must be acceptable.Note that the implementation of a low-pass pre-filter is likely to be feasible, because it does not need to be tunable.In the proposed differ-ential N-pathfilter,second harmonic folding is cancelled which relaxes the pre-filter transition band.Moreover,increasing can relax the pre-filter transition band requirements.B.The Effect of the Switch ResistanceIn order to include the effect of the switch resistance in our analysis,we consider the model shown in Fig.8.Since in the architecture illustrated in Fig.3,at any moment just two of the switches are on,the model in Fig.8includes two switch resis-tances in front of an ideal N-pathfilter with zero switch resis-tances.Employing(11)with,the transfer function from to can be easily ing su-perposition of the and contributions wefind(13) If is set to zero in(13)it returns to the previous form of(11).Switch resistance can have strong impact on the max-imum achievable rejection in N-pathfilters.To understand this, consider the frequency transfer function switch resistance is not significant(term is close to1and dominates).But for frequencies further away from the switching frequency,where is close to zero,thefirst term often dominates and the output can be approximated as.Thus,the maximum filter rejection is limited by the switch resistance,as exemplified by Fig.9for the same4-pathfilter used for Fig.6but now with added.As a conclusion,in order to increase the maximum rejection of thefilter,the switch resistance should be very small with respect to the source resistance.C.Harmonic Selectivity in an N-Path FilterIn this section we will discuss the selectivity in the har-monics of the switching frequency both in an analytical and intuitive way.Aroundfilter response peaks thefilter becomes high-ohmic.To quantify the selectivity around the harmonics of the switching frequency,we approximate(12)for, for odd,resulting in(15) where and is the duty cycle of each clock phase.As an example,if we substitute and and,then,i.e.,1.8dB in-sertion loss in the pass-band,whichfits to Fig.6.According to (15)increasing N will reduce the insertion loss.As an example, for an8-path system the insertion loss becomes0.4dB.Equa-tion(12)was used to produce Fig.10(a),comparing a4-path and8-pathfilter with afixed total amount of capacitance.This figure suggests that thefilter attenuation around harmonics is reduced by increasing the number of paths.To understand this fact better,notice that the achievable rejection of thefilter at the odd harmonics of the switching frequency can be approxi-mated by(15).Assuming ideal clocking(substitutein(15))the suppression at the harmonics is solely defined by the number of paths.Fig.10(b)shows the calculated harmonic rejection applying(15).In most cases indeed harmonic suppres-sion decreases by increasing the number of paths,but there are a few exceptions[see Fig.10(b)].To get some intuitive insight how harmonic rejection and har-monic folding occurs,we added third harmonic,illustrating that both harmonic selectivity and harmonic folding occurs.Similar signals can be drawn for a larger number of paths.Doing so, we can observe that for more paths,i.e.,greater number of time slots in Fig.10(c),there is less time to cancel the positive parts of a signal with the negative parts during the integration taking place on each individual rger leads to less attenuation of harmonics at the output[Fig.10(b)],but less folding back since the staircase approximation in Fig.2(d)re-sembles the actual input signal better.D.Input Impedance of an N-Path FilterNow by applying(14)and(15)we can derive simple expres-sions for the input impedance of the N-pathfilter in Fig.8at the switching frequency,its odd harmonics and for frequencies far away from the peak points in Fig.9.It will be shown that these impedances are all resistive.The effect of the switch re-sistance can easily be taken into account by substituting(15)in (14)tofind an approximate equation for.Tofind the equivalent input impedance of the N-path systemwe define.As a result,.For a 4-path system(,)wefind(16) Equation(16)predicts that at the switching frequency the input power matching.E.The Effect of the Duty Cycle of the ClockWhen the duty cycle of the multiphase clock is smaller than,all switches are off periodically for some time and the output signal of the N-pathfilter simply tracks the(unloaded) input signal.Applying(12)for a4-path architecture,thefilter shape for a duty cycle is illustrated in Fig.11(a). Comparing to the ideal case,notice from(17) that reducing the duty cycle from results in higher input impedance for the frequencies far away from the switching fre-quency and its odd harmonics,which translates to less rejection. On the other hand the reduced duty cycle decreases pass-band insertion loss,as predicted by(12)and also(15)[see Fig.11(b)]. Note that the degradation of the maximum rejection is much more than the reduction in the pass-band loss.As mentioned in Section III,our analysis does not include the case for which two switches can be on at the same time,resulting in undesired charge sharing between capacitors. Fig.11(a)also shows simulation results for two overlapping clock cases:1)and,resulting in com-plete destruction of thefilter shape;2),, where the switch resistance still limits the charge sharing be-tween capacitors and somefiltering remains,but with large in-sertion loss.F.RLC Model,Bandwidth and Quality FactorAround,thefilter transfer function as shown in Fig.6resembles that of a high-Q tank circuit.Now we want to quantify this similarity andfind an equivalent RLC model that predicts the quality factor and bandwidth for the N-path filter.Although(11)encompasses a repetitive pattern of poles and zeros,we are mostly interested in poles which occur close to theswitching frequency.Equating the denominator ofin(12)to zero to find the poles,wefind,Fig.12.Equivalent RLC circuit model for the N-pathfilter.,indeed odd harmonics of.In order to make a narrowband approximation,we just consider the poles close to the switching frequency,which areand set these poles equal to the poles of the transfer function of Fig.12,which is shown in(18):(18) As a result,and in the RLC model can be found as(19a)(19b) The value of in the RLC model is already derived in(16) for a4-path system with for the switching frequency. Intuitively this can be understood considering that in Fig.5the resistor value charging the capacitor is and the capacitor sees this resistor value for a fraction of the period,i.e.,the “effective resistor”is.Therefore,the3dB bandwidth becomes times the low-passfilter bandwidth defined by. Finally,for a4-path system and.Thus,we see that the bandwidth not only depends on theparison of the transfer of the RLC model with the full N-pathfilter model(11).RC value for each path,but also on the duty cycle of the clock. Comparing a4-path and an8-pathfilterusing identical capacitors in each path,the8-pathfilter has half the bandwidth of the4-pathfilter.If we keep the total amount of capacitance equal,then the bandwidth will not differ by in-creasing the number of paths[see Fig.10(a)].In this paper,we exploit a1:2transformer to increase the source resistance,as seen by thefilter,and hence reduce the bandwidth and increase the Q of thefilter.A further increase in capacitor area can pro-vide even lower bandwidth and higher Q.Notice that as we discussed intuitively in Section II,the RC in each path of an N-pathfilter is performing integration on the input signal,when the corresponding switch is on.In contrast to a sampling system,there is no need for the voltage to settle during one on-time of the switch.Thus,the choice of the capac-itor size is independent of the switching frequency and can be solely determined based on the desired bandwidth.G.Imbalance Multiphase Clocking and Mismatch in the Paths Next,consider what happens if there is mismatch between paths or if clocking signals deviate from the ideal situation. With mismatch,we can expect that even-order terms are no longer perfectly cancelled and extra frequency components show up.As an example,,which was0for an ideal N-path system,can be non-zero around the desired band.
