AYou might not expect it, but cows are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Cows produce lots of methane by breaking down the grass, Now scientists have shown that the pollution from cows canbe reduced by adding a little seaweed to their food.Scientists first discovered that seaweed could help control methane from cows several years ago. But this work was done in a laboratory, there were many questions about whether the idea could work in real life.In the lab studies, the cows were given quite a bit of seaweed, and they would cause losing weight. That wasn't helpful, since cows are often sold by weight. It also wasn't clear if the seaweed would stop working if it was used for a longer period of time. Now, scientists from the University of California, Davis have answered several of these questions. The researchers studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to measure the methane that the cows were giving off. This time, they used a much smaller amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows' food. The results were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given, but even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane.Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows' stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again.Another surprise came when they looked at the weight of the cows. The cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows, but they didn't need as much food. But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there's notadequateseaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed.A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in fields, where they eat the grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day. These problems need to be taken seriously if the world is going to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis.Still, it's true that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.1. Why did the scientists do the experiment on the farm?A. To control the amount of seaweed.B. To record the weight cows gained.C. To confirm the effect of seaweed in real life.D. To measure the amount of seaweed cows ale.2. The underlined word “adequate” means ________ .A. commonB. specialC. lackingD. enough3. The passage is written to ________ .A. appeal to people not to raise the cowsB. encourage people to plant the seaweedC. remind people of controlling cows' weightD. call on people to take actions to reduce the pollutionBPreparations for the Tokyo Olympics have suffered another challenge after a survey found that 60% of people in Japan want them to be cancelled, less than three months before the Games are scheduled to open.Japan has extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and several other regions until the end of May as it struggles to control a fast increase in COVID-19 cases caused by new, more catching variants(变异体)with medical staff warning that health services in some areas are on the edge of breaking down. The Olympics, which were delayed by a year due to the pandemic, are set to open on 23 July, with the International Olympic Committee(IOC)and organizers insisting that measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of athletes and other visitors, as well as a nervous Japanese public. The survey, conducted between 7 and 9 May by the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun, showed 60% wanted the Games cancelled as opposed to 39% who said they should be held. “Postponement” — an option abandoned by the IOC — was not offered as a choice.Of those who said the Olympics should go ahead, 23% said they should take place without audience. Foreign audience have been banned but a final decision on native attendance will be made in June.Another poll conducted at the weekend by TBS News found 65% wanted the Games cancelled or postponed again, with 37% voting to give up the event altogether and 28% calling for another delay. A similar poll in April conducted by Kyodo news agency found 70% wanted the Olympics cancelled or postponed. The IOC's vice president, John Coates, said that while Japanese sentiment about the Games “was a concern”, he could foresee no situation under which the sporting events would not go ahead.4. How many Japanese wish the Olympics would not be held in Tokyo according to the survey?A. 60%.B. 28%.C. 37%.D. 70%.5. What should be put into consideration if the Olympics open?A. The economic crisis.B. The urban transport.C. The safety of athletes.D. The health condition of citizens.6. What is some people's attitude towards foreign spectators in Paragraph 5?A. Welcome.B. Unfriendly.C. Cold.D. Unsupported.7. What can we conclude from John Coates'words?A. The Olympics will be stopped this year.B. The Olympics will be put off.C. The Olympics will be held normally.D. The Olympics will take place in other place.CAs a rider, Anna Kiesenhofe’s Olympics victory might be a surprise. The winner of the road race at the Tokyo Olympics left the sport at the end of 2017 when she found herself out of contract (合同). She came into Tokyo without a professional team and left as an Olympic champion. The 30-year old began her cycling career in 2014 after running injuries that prevented her from continuing her pursuits of triathlon (铁人三项). She later joined a Catalan team and won the Spanish National Cup in 2016.The then-26 year old signedher first professional contract with Lotto Soudal Ladies for the following season. However, she ended her 2017 campaign in April and did not sign a contract for 2018, eventually taking a year off the bike. In 2019, Kiesenhofer came back to the sport as a rider, winning the Austrian national road race. Despite her results, Kiesenhofer sill had no professional contract while going into the Tokyo Olympics.Kiesenhofer was the first rider to attack in the Olympic road race, eventually forming a breakaway along with Carl Oberholzer, Omer Shapira, Vera Looser and Anna Plichta, which went on to reach a gap of 11 minutes. After Looser and Oberholzer were dropped, Kiesnhofer ataced her two remaining breakaway companions. After Shapira and Plichta were caught by the peloton (主车群), the rest of the riders seemed to believe that they were racing among themselves for Gold, not knowing that Remehofere was still in front. While it might be a misjudgment from the rest of the peloton that allowed Kiesenhofer to keep her lead of more than two minutes, other riders’ mistakes should not detract from the Austrian’s efforts.Off the bike the new Olympic Champion has a PhD in mathematics after studying at the Technical Universityof Vienne as well as at Cambridge University. She currently works at the University of Lausanne.8. Why did Anna give up triathlon?A. She got injured.B. She lost interest in it.C. She had to attend university.D. She never won a medal.9. Which is the right order of the following events?①She ended her campaign.②She took a year off the bike.③She began her cycling career.④She won the Austrian national road race.⑤She won the Spanish National Cup.A. ③④①②⑤.B. ②③④①⑤.C. ③⑤①②④.D. ④②③①⑤.10. What were the riders of the peloton unaware of at the Tokyo Olympics?A. The road race was so difficult.B. Anna was a new rider.C. They had caught up with Anna.D. Anna took the lead of them.11. What is Anna’s present job?A. A cycling coach.B. A university teacher.C A professional rider. D. A college student.DWe use what is known as inner speech, where we talk to ourselves, to evaluate situations and make decisions. Now, a robot has been trained to speak aloud its inner decision-making process, giving us a view of how it responds to contradictory demands.Arianna Pipitone and Antonio Chella at the University of Palermo, Italy, programmed a humanoid robot named Pepper, with software that models human cognitive(认知的)processes, which allowed Pepper to retrieve (检索)relevant information from its memory and find the correct way to act based on human commands, as well as a text — to — speech processor. It allowed Pepper to voice its decision-making process while completing a task, "With inner speech, we can better understand what the robot wants to do and what its plan is," says Chella. The researchers asked Pepper to set a dinner table according to etiquette (礼仪)rules they had programmed into the robot. Inner speech was either enabled or disabled to see how it affected Pepper's ability to do what was instructed. When instructed to place a napkin on a fork with its inner speech enabled, Pepper asked itself what the etiquette required and concluded that this request went against the rules it had been given. It then asked the researchers if putting the napkin on the fork was the correct action. When told it was, Pepper said, "OK, I prefer to follow your desire," and explained how it was going to place the napkin on the fork. When asked to do the same task with inner speech disabled, Pepper knew this contradicted etiquette rules, so it didn't perform the task or explain why. With the potential for robots to become more common in the future, this type of programming could help the public understand their abilities and limitations, says Sarah Sebo at theUniversityofChicago. "It maintains people's trust and enables cooperation and interactions between humans and robots," she says. However, this experiment only used a single human participant, says Sebo. "It's unclear how their approach would compare across a wide range of human participants," she says.12. Why does the author mention how people make decisions in the first paragraph?A. To introduce the topic.B. To make comparisons.C. To provide an example.D. To support his argument.13. How did Pepper react to the contradictory instruction with its inner speech enabled?A. It failed to complete the task.B. It followed the etiquette rules.C. It made a random decision.D. It communicated with the researchers.14. What did Sarah Sebo think of the research?A. It was creative but worthless.B. It was a good try but the result was a failure.C. It was inspiring but needed further evidence.D. It was carefully designed but poorly performed.15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. Robot Taught To Be PoliteB. Robot Can Explain Its DecisionC. Robot Making Decisions: No Longer A DreamD. Robot-Human Communication: No Longer A Problem第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

That name suggests the type of work we do. The “drops” in question are drops of water. My organization works in the poor countries of Africa to provide clean water to areas which most need it. This is not an easy task, nor a cheap one, but it is a very important one. To cut costs,we employ volunteers from schools and factories to help us drill or dig wells for villages which do not have an adequate supply of rain or river water. So why am I telling you this? Because we need your help. We don’t have the wealth of a private company or a government behind us. As a charity, we rely on donations and volunteers. So if you can’t help us financially, I would like to ask a ny of you who can lend a hand with our work, perhaps during your summer vacation. You will have the experience of a lifetime and know what you have helped save or improve countless lives.。

安徽省淮北市第一中学2020-2021学年高二上学期第四次月考(12月)英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读选择Saturday, March 24thWe have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand (泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North. Tuesday, March 27thBangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai. Friday, March 30thOur trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life—no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year.1.Which of the following is TRUE?A.The writer left Chiang Mai for Chiang Rai by busB.The writer is working in Thailand.C.The writer dislikes the food in Thailand.D.The writer will take a bus to Chiang Mai.2.The people in the village .A.like to speak English B.are friendly to othersC.hope to live in the cities D.live a very busy life3.What is the passage mainly about?A.My First Travel B.The Outside WorldC.My Trip to Chiang Mai D.Traveling in ThailandMy family lived in a motel for two years. Like most families living there, we stayed in a two- bedroom suite. We were living from paycheck to paycheck, so when Christmas approached, we didn't know if we could be able to purchase gifts for our children.A few days before Christmas someone dropped off presents for all the kids that lived in the motel. It brought so much joy to all the children, most of whom knew that they wouldn't be receiving anything.Five years ago, we moved out of the motel. After that, my husband and I were working hard at the Joe’s Crab Shack to support our family. A few days before Christmas, I was working a “big top” and a single table. The man at my table could see that the large table was taking most of my time, but I was very patient and friendly. Between drinks and food I was able to chat with him about his family and mine. He left me $10, then walked out. About 10 minutes later, I turned around and there he was again. He gave me a hug, and put something in the side of my coat, tell ing me “Have a Merry Christmas”. I reached into my coat and pulled out $800.I was so moved by his generosity that I burst into tears. He had given me more than enough money to help my family catch up on our bills. After discussing what we should do with the money we had left over, we decided to buy presents for the families living at the motel, so we could pass on the blessing that we had received. Since then, it has been a tradition for us to give Christmas gift to the families in need.Last year we were able to give presents each of the 80 children at a school in our community, and throw a Christmas party for them. But when former South African president Nelson Mandela advised two dozen local youth leaders in Los Angeles to take education seriously, his audience was listening. The famed old man said to the young people that if they expected to improve the lives of others in the future, they must work at improving their own lives now. "Education is one of the most important weapons you have,” Mandela advised. “It will place you in a far better position to serve yourself and your community.”“The point is, he was young once and rebellious(叛逆的)once and he kept his dream alive, just as y ou each have dreams,” explained South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Sheila Sisulu, as she introduced Mandela to the young crowd.Asked for specific advice about changing society by 21-year-old Ahmed Younis, Mandela suggested that somehow helping arouse more American interest in foreign affairs might be a start. There is an impression that Americans, in general, have not followed international developments properly, Mandela said. “I’m not making that statement myself, but there are serious political analysts who say Americans are not well informed as to what has happened in the world.”22-year-old Omari Trice said Mandela left him full of enthusiasm. “ He’s a person who set the tone for an entire nation, said Trice. “You come away feeling yo u need to be a superman in order to get things done.”8.From the passage, we can conclude that American youth .A.are unwilling to accept the advice from world-famous leadersB.have a good understanding of the oldC.usually think that advice from old people is not worth consideringD.have no intention to improve the lives of others9.Nelson Mandela makes the point in his speech that American youth leaders should .A.go to college for better educationB.improve their own livesC.become interested in foreign affairsD.put more importance on education10.What Sheila Sisulu said suggested that .A.she was especially troublesome when youngB.American youth should be no more rebelliousC.Nelson Mandela never lost hope in his lifeD.Nelson Mandela was quite different from American youth when young11.From what Trice said, we can know that .A.he thought little of Mandela’s speechB.he must be a superman in order to change societyC.he’ll be more interested in international developmentD.he was gr eatly impressed and encouraged by Mandela’s speechMax Vernon Mathews has been called the father of computer music. He created electronic tools so that people could use computers as musical instruments. He had a huge influence on the development of electronic music and how it is written, recorded and played. In 1957, Max Mathews wrote the first computer program that enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. At the time, he was working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. His computer program was called Music. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeen-second piece of music that he had written. The computer was so slow that it would have taken an hour to play the piece of music in seventeen seconds. For that reason, Mathews moved the work to a tape player, which could be sped up to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the music notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge. The science fiction writer Arthur C.Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He heard a computer “sing” the song "Daisy Bell" on devices and programs developed by Max Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which was later made i nto a movie.Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios.Max Mathews had a long and productive career. He worked with composers like John Cage and Edgard Varese. He helped create a center for research in computer music in Paris. And he taught at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics in Stanford University in California.Mathews believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin, but with a computer, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He said he did not want computer sounds to replace live music. But he said he hoped laptop computers would one day be considered serious instruments12.How did the program Music work according to the passage?A.It made sound and play it on a computer.B.It helped design a computer program.C.It could record a seventeen-second piece of music.D.It enabled a large IBM computer to work faster.13.Mathews was likely to think that .A.the first piece of computer music was too shortB.the first computer music was technically important.C.the IBM computer was fit for creating slow musicD.the first piece of computer music wasn't music indeed14.Which of the following is true?A.Clarke helped develop computer music.B.Mathews became a character in a movie later on.C.Computer music was mentioned in Clarke’s book.D.Clarke saw Mathews operate a singing computer.15.It is implied in the last paragraph that .A.Mathew wanted computers to take the place of live music.B.a violin does make much better sounds than a computerC.laptops are more suitable to be used as serious musical instrumentsD.a computer can help improve sounds of traditional musical instruments二、七选五Money MattersParents should help their children understand money. 16.So you may start talking aboutmoney when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.1.The basic function of moneyBegin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport. The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests that young people aged between6 and17carry out at least60minutes of physical activity a day,7hours a week. But researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that14hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than14hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than1,245teenagers aged between16and20from Switzerland. All participants were required to answer questions regarding height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being.Their well-being was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO)Well-Being Index, which provides scores between0and25.Of the participants,50.4%were male with a mean age of17.95years.Almost9%of these males were overweight. The overall well-being score for all participants was17.The researchers divided sports participation into low(0-3.5hours a week),average(3.6-10.5 hours),high(10.6-17.5hours),and very high(more than17.5hours).The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below13,compared with participants who carried out around14hours of physical activity a week, but beyond14hours resulted in lower well-being scores.Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been associated with positive emotional well-being,reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-esteem(自尊)in teenagers. The researchers note that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about well-being.Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being.The findings can inform guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers.25.From the first paragraph we can conclude that_________.A.teenagers negatively do sportsB.everything coin has two sidesC.active sports does good to healthck of exercise influences health26.What does the underlined word“detrimental”in Paragraph2mean?A.Positive.B.Essential.C.Beneficial.D.Harmful.27.What did the researchers find out?A.Overdoing sport exercise is unhealthy for teenagers.B.Taking part in sport less is the cause of overweight.C.Very high activity groups tend to get higher well-being scores.D.Self-esteem is improved by unlimited sport activity.28.How do physicians assess teenagers’health from the study?A.The way to promote teenagers’physical health.B.The importance of checking their level of workout.C.The method of improving their emotional well-being.D.The necessity of giving suggestions on their workout.CEvery year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii,Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for---its stadium and theaters, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost2,000years.Once,Pompeii was a busy city of22,000people.It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius,a grass-covered volcano.Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries,so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.In August of AD79,Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air.Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later,Pompeii was buried under20feet of stones and ashes.Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries,Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then,in the year1861,an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii.Slowly, carefully,Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD79.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with20,000seats.Perhaps the most important of all there everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people of Pompeii who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom,so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too;metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were81round, flat loaves of bread---a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today.Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.Geinseppe has died, but his work continues.One-fourth has not been uncovered yet.Scientistsare still digging, still making discoveries that draw tourists to Pompeii.29.Why do large number of people come to Pompeii each year?A.To visit the volcanoB.To shop and eat thereC.To watch sports and playsD.To see how Pompeiians lived30.Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?A.The city nearby offered all kinds of fun.B.The area produced the finest wine in Italy.C.Few people expected the volcano to erupt again.D.The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.31.Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD79?A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.32.What do we know about the Pompeiians who live3,000years ago?A.They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.B.They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.C.They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.D.They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD79.DWhen I began my career as a jazz singer,I was told to start by covering the standards. But I didn’t follow the path most new jazz artists take and produced original albums instead.I believe when you have something to say,you can’t really keep it down. Two of those original albums,Liquid Spirit and Take Me To The Alley, earned me a loyal fan base and two Grammys for best jazz album in2014and2017respectively.My idol is Nat King Cole, whose music has an important place in our household.I could smell the greens on the stove and the cornbread in the oven when I hear Nat’s music.I wanted to have his music come through my body and sing it as an expression of appreciation for him.My mother had always been a fan of his music. This is something I did one day:Imagine her coming home from some protest movement or march and putting on,“Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though it’s breaking.”Imagine her putting on,“Pick yourself up,dust yourself off, start all over again.”I see the optimism and the strength in his music.Writing from a personal experience can bring about my feelings and power of feelings that can be instantly connected to the instrument and my voice. When I sing Mother’s Song,Insanity, even Holding On,I am expressing things I have a connection to.The song Holding On is a soul song.It connects to Nat King Cole with its optimism, the optimism about the power and the strength of love.I like the fact that I can have17to25-year-olds all over the world jumping and dancing to this song. They’re still getting the message.33.How did the writer start his career as a musician?A.By copying his idol.B.By singing for awards.C.By covering the standards.D.By creating original music.34.What’s paragraph three mainly about?A.The writer’s childhood experience.B.Nat King Cole’s contribution to jazz.C.The writer’s mother in the protest movement.D.Nat King Cole’s influence on the writer and his family.35.What does the writer express in his songs?A.His personal emotions.B.His strong love for jazz.C.His attitude toward social injustice.D.His memories of the good old days.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
