Ben has recently graduated college, with his parents now expecting great things from him. At his "Homecoming" party, Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner, has Ben drive her home, which leads to an affair between the two. The affair eventually ends, but comes back to haunt him when he finds himself falling for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's daughter. It makes us understand why Ben just has to do what he does, also telling us that Ben is not the strongest person in the world. Ross is quite nice too, although her character is pretty forgettable. If Ben would have chosen for Mrs. Robinson instead of the daughter it would probably have been more believable.Captain of the Crosscountry TeamHead of the Debating ClubAssociate Editor of the college newspaper in his Junior yearManaging Editor in his Senior………...Overall I think this is a great film, with only the ending as really implausible, although I must admit I liked it this way. Even if it has flaws, even if it is a little dated at times, it feels fresh and is more entertaining than most films today. The Graduate was a movie that everyone could relate to. The feeling of being thrown out into the world and life just passing you by is overwhelming which is how we find out main character Benjamin feeling. When we first meet him he stares straight ahead with a look that could mean so many things and in fact I felt that through out the movie I could never really tell how he felt except by the change if music and its tempo. I found Hoffman's character hard to grasp except that he is just going through the motions in his monkey suit to make his parents happy. The action is mainly seen through the eyes of Benjamin Braddock, a confused twenty-one year old, who is worried about his future but who does not simply want to follow the commercial path of his affluent family and their friends. When Benjamin is on the plane there is a head shot of him staring straight ahead and his head seems to be enveloped by the brilliantly white head rest. I found that shot to be amusing because it showed the innocence that he possessed even after completing four years of college. Benjamin was the prodigal son who did everything to make his parents happy, even when he voiced complaints to his father about the party or the diving suit; he was never heard, throughout the movie his character is ignored until he meets Elaine. One of the many great scenes that drive the point across that he is lost in his own world where he can only hear himself is when he comes out for his 21st birthday party and his father will not listen to his objections. The audience is taken into the back yard through Benjamin's perspective (his own world) looking through the goggles. All we can hear is his breath and all he can hear is himself which is what he is used to. His breath blocks every body out and he is pushed repeatedly back into the pool by his father. Benjamin decides to stay submerged and avoid reality. This theme of submersion is present in the beginning of the movie when he is looking through the fish tank and watches the fish swim around, they seem so free yet they can only swim so far before they are back where they started.Benjamin feels alone in the beginning until Mrs. Robinson begins to show an interest in him and pretty soon that white 'halo' from the plane turns to black. As far as the viewer can tell there is no emotional connection between Ben and Mrs. Robinson, he still walks around aimlessly and his manner turns from that of a paranoid youth, like many of us, to an almost cocky young man. An interesting aspect between the relationship of Ben and Mrs. Robinson is the way the gender roles are switched. Ben is interested in involving conversation to their meetings and feels like he is being used while Mrs. Robison just wants to be purely physical. Ben has a more feminine personality then Mrs. Robison because she has so many secrets kept inside. The romance between Ben and Elaine is somewhat rushed because one second they are in a adult club where Elaine feels insulted and wants nothing to do with Ben, and then the next thing we know they are laughing and getting along and going on another date. The next instance Elaine is being married off yet she does not object. When Ben shows up to the wedding it is hard to say whether she is happy because she loves him or if she is happy because he offers and escape for her. All she can hear is Ben screaming her name, everyone else is blocked out.。

The Graduate
This is just one of those films where everything's in synchronicity and everything works, where the camera is plugged into a higher power making the film transcend the vast majority of celluloid product. It's as if the film taps into the energy of the Sixties and Berkeley, California and post-adolescent angst and imparts that onto the viewer. Although many might consider this to be a film about protest, it's really about the difficulties of growing up and maintaining any sort of idealism in a plasticene, compromising culture, and how we're fated to fall into that quagmire no matter how good our intentions may be.

The influential film is a comedy with stinging satire not only on the college graduates who finds himself isolated with social environment but also on the values of Americans in1960 through the vivid description of the confusion, and struggle of Benjamin. The numbness and confusion of Ben is not only his personal problem but also the miniature of that era.
Key word: numbness, confusion, miniature, graduate, struggleIntroduction:The movie was adapted firstly from a novel written by Calder Willingham, Buck Henry and then premiered on Broadway in early April of 2002, with Kathleen Turner reprising her role as Mrs. Robinson, along with Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone in the other major roles. Mike Nichols Benjamin Braddock who was the main character is adrift after graduate from college. He was seduced and betrayed by a corrupt, decadent, and discredited older generation twice his age Mrs. Robinson. She was an insightful woman who can notice Ben’s inner emptiness in the party. Then Benjamin’s dream girl was shocked when she found out he has been sleeping with her mother. Finally Benjamin followed his heart and went with his dream girl. As far as I concern what impressed me most is the confusion and struggle of the youth in that age.The struggle:In 1960s with the rapid economic development, people began to have doubts about the old social order which kept capitalism running. The suspicion promoted a series of struggle. For example, black nationalism, women liberation, anti-Vietnam War, and sexual liberation. The entire struggle reflected the disruptive innovation and destructive effect of the new generation. Anti-establishment which was the main melody in literary works was deeply reflected in The Graduate. I will analyze the struggle exposed in the movie.Firstly, on the term of hippies’ struggle, in the movie when Ben and Elaine were sitting in the car and chatting freely, the hippies played rock music constantly outside. The noisy prevented them from hearing each other clearly. When Ben called the hippies to turn down the music, they didn’t follow Ben’ order and even made their music louder. This sight showed a sharp contrast of the youngsters’ rebel personality against the traditional thought.Secondly, as to the sexual liberation, the resign of President Kennedy left the American society in a mess. People were eager to find outlets for their frustration and confusion for their future. Then sexual liberation appeared as times acquired. In this movieMrs. Robinson’s sexual allure of Ben was also the embodiment of sexual liberation. In tradition a boy should love a girl who is of the same age. While in this movie Ben, a promising graduate, had a love affair with a woman who was old enough to be his mother. This section of roentgen loves obviously violated the traditional concept.Thirdly, in the aspect of anti-war movement, the Vietnam conflict broke out in 1950s, and soon anti-war passions began to heat up and soon gained a peak in the end of 1960s. There was a sense of dissatisfaction with the status quo and the middle-class values flowing in the mass. The breakthrough movie described the restless emotion so profoundly and it also mirrored that anarchic mood perfectly for American youth of the 60s during the escalation of the Vietnam War. In the movie the exhausting Ben sat in Berkley Berkeley. This university was the home of student movements and was also the most active place for anti-war activities. When Ben sat beneath the flying American flag which represented the American Dream, he still felt confused with his future. This sharp satire which indicated the collapse of American Dream. The confusion:The main character Ben who had stepped outside the Ivory Tower and was going into the community college. He had to turn his focus from his study to social affair such as love, career and so on. But he lost his way when facing the crossroads in the life. He found his outlook diverged from his peers, so he automatically isolated himself from others. That was because on the one hand he was eager to do something special and live his own life and on the other hand he was forced to follow the old social rule which has arranged for him by his predecessors. The two thoughts attacked each other in his mind and finally he lost in the confusion. Then he finally struggle for a new social concept.Firstly, the confusion before his struggle, at the beginning of the movie Ben returned to his family which was a ferociously stupid upper-middle-class in California suburb. His family and their social circle demanded that he should perform in the role of successful young college grad. When the party was centered around him and his dad proudly introduced various honor he had received in school, we can obviously notice Ben’ anxiety. When Mrs. Robinson --o ne of his parents’ contemporaries-- noticed his emptiness he finally found warm comfort with this decadentwomen who succumbs mostly out of weariness and disbelief. Ben’ submission to Mrs. Robinson’s sexual temptation reflected the confusion of new social men when facing a choice.Secondly, the confusion after struggle, in the end of movie the Ben finally kidnapped Miss Ross from the altar to prevent the wedding. He jammed a cross into the church door to prevent pursuit, and they escaped on a bus. While in accordance with common sense, when two lovers finally took the shackles off and got forward to begin their new life, they must be exciting and looked forward to the future with full confidence. After the transient craze gave away to reality, they began to rethink their behaviors. Ben may soon be aware that the looting marriage was the result of hotheaded impulse rather than the pursuit of true love. Then the two people felt desperately depressed and confused. They are wondering whether the love they had been pursuing all the time was the real love. The audience might also question did the two youngster really love each other. After they got on the bus, they didn't show any sense of excitement and even they separated themselves when the song --the sound of silence-- sounded. They isolated themselves from their families and at the same time they separated themselves from each other as well. Though they got on the bus they didn’t know where thedestination the bus would brought them to. After they had struggled for a new life they finally fell into a new confusion again. Their experience also indicated the new generation would ultimately return to the traditional moral values when they approached middle-age and worked in sterile corporate settings. What they struggled for in the early of life would be aimless. Conclusion:The Graduate is the milestone of comedy. It is influential not because of sight gags and punch lines, but because its reflection of the American upheaval in 1960s. The movie still resonates across modern Americans after 30 years. Time doesn’t make the pioneering film fade on the contrary bring new meaning to it dramatically.Bibliography:(1).Movie The Graduate at/content.asp?id=346(2) David Smith,” The Confusion in the Graduate”, 2005(3) Roger Ebert, “The Graduate”, Chicago Sun-Times (March 28, 1997).(4). “Analysis of the Graduate”Retrieved from/subject/1292271。

The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols, is a classic coming-of-age film that explores themes of disillusionment and seduction. Released in 1967, the film follows the story of Benjamin Braddock, who has just graduated from college and is uncertain about his future.Dustin Hoffman delivers a stunning performance as Benjamin, capturing the character's vulnerability and confusion. As the film begins, Benjamin is unsure of what he wants to do with his life, feeling pressured by both his parents and society to have a successful career. This sense of uncertainty resonates with many young viewers who have also experienced the overwhelming expectations placed upon them. One of the standout moments in the film is Benjamin's affair with Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft. Their relationship starts off as a game of cat and mouse, with Mrs. Robinson seducing Benjamin. This forbidden romance adds an exciting and suspenseful element to the film. The chemistry between Hoffman and Bancroft on-screen is palpable, making their scenes together captivating to watch. However, it is the film's portrayal of Benjamin's existential crisis that sets it apart. Benjamin is torn between following societal expectations and finding his own path. This struggle is expertly portrayed through Hoffman's nuanced performance, as he conveys Benjamin's feelings of being lost and trapped. The film's use of close-ups and lingering shots perfectly captures Benjamin's inner turmoil, making the audience empathize with his predicament. The symbolism in The Graduate is also noteworthy. One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Benjamin is seen swimming in his parents' pool. The pool represents the shallowness of suburban life and the society that Benjamin is rebelling against. This scene perfectly encapsulates Benjamin's desire to break free from the constraints of his parents' world. Additionally, the use of Simon & Garfunkel's soundtrack adds another layer of meaning to the film, with songs like "The Sound of Silence" perfectly complementing Benjamin's feelings of isolation. In conclusion, The Graduate is a timeless film that continues to resonate with audiences. Its exploration of youth, disillusionment, and rebellion is as relevant today as it was in 1967. Dustin Hoffman's impeccable performance, along with Mike Nichols' direction, makes this film a must-watch for anyone going through a period of questioning and uncertainty in their lives. The Graduate remains a cinematic masterpiece that captures the complexities of growing up and finding one's place in the world.。

The Graduate" is one of the best films I have ever had the pleasure to witness, and I only wish I were alive when it was first released. Dustin Hoffman, in his first major film role, plays Benjamin Braddock: the epitome of the confused and isolated young adult male. He sits in his room and does nothing. He lies around in his parent's pool for hours on end. Ben, who has just graduated from college, is home for the summer. Then, after an awkward sexual encounter with a friend of his parents named Mrs. Robinson, a one night stand turns into a summer romance. But betrayal soon follows as Benjamin falls for Mrs. Robinson's daughter, Elaine.Nichol's directorial genius (he won an Oscar for the film) really shows in the opening party sequence celebrating Ben's arrival home. There is a close-up of Ben's face as he stumbles his way through the event, listening to advice and shaking hands with the faceless (much like his future) masses. The camera moves in such a way that a feeling of claustrophobia comes over the viewer. They are overcome by what is going on around them, much like Benjamin is at this crossroads in his life. Another example is when Ben first arrives at the fateful hotel where he meets Mrs. Robinson for sex. He walks around the lobby, suspicious that the desk clerk is on to him, and then he attempts to walk into a room. Only a large group of the elderly walks out, and Benjamin stands there holding the door for them. Then he proceeds inside, only to be passed by a group of high school students. This image once again reinforces the crossroads that Ben is at in his life. After finally viewing this classic, I realized that many of my favorite directors to emerge from the 90's (mainly Wes Anderson) were greatly influenced by this film. What's more interesting is that "The Graduate" was a landmark film for American cinema and the decade in which it was released, sharing the same themes that Benjamin experiences throughout the film. Most of American cinema was very conventional up until the 60's. Nothing extremely scandalous was shown in a film, and many serious topics were not widely addressed through cinema…yet. "The Graduate" is the perfect mix of old and new. It's the 'bridge' that separates the standard American films from the more experimental ones that would emerge all throughout the 1970's.The same can be said for the decade of the 1960's. America lost its innocence the day Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. For the next five years, the country went through a spiral of events that led to the sexual revolution of the late 1960's. And "The Graduate" separates the white picket fences of the 50's and early 60's from the Rock and Roll and drugs of the late 1960's and early 70's. It's a crossroads in the middle of the most turbulent time in American history. In one of the films most ironic images, a tired and lonesome Benjamin slumps on a bench on the Berkley campus (an important place for the sexual revolution) under an American flag blowing in the wind. The flag still waves, but Benjamin is beat. He represents the fall and eventual metamorphosis of the American dream. But aside from all its serious themes and deeper meanings, "The Graduate" is a comedy at its heart. It contains one of the funniest and most exciting climaxes in cinema. And the final image is a knockout. It shows Benjamin and Elaine sitting at the end of a bus filled with elders, looking ahead blankly, at the road and at their future. Then the bus drives off in the distance. They do notknow where their future is headed, or where the bus is even going. It was the same circumstance for America in 1967. The film closes with the same song it opened with: "The Sounds of Silence".(ZZ from IMDB)。
The Graduate is a thought-provoking film that delves into the themes of love, identity, and the disillusionment experienced by many recent college graduates. Directed by Mike Nichols, the film stars a young Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a student who has just graduated from college and finds himself aimless and unsure about his future. The film begins with Benjamin’s return home after completing his studies. His parents throw a lavish party to celebrate his graduation and to show him off to their friends. However, Benjamin feels suffocated by the expectations and the perfect life his parents have planned out for him. This feeling of being trapped is expertly conveyed through the use of camera angles and shots, particularly during the pool scene where we see Benjamin floating aimlessly, symbolizing his lack of direction and purpose.Benjamin's life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes involved with Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner. The affair between Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson becomes the centerpiece of the film, and it explores the complexities of love and desire. Hoffman’s portrayal of Benjamin captures the inner conflict he feels as he grapples with his feelings for Mrs. Robinson, while also trying to navigate his own identity and figure out what he wants out of life. One of the standout scenes in the film is the iconic shot of Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson's legs as they stand on opposite sides of the frame, symbolizing the physical and emotional distance between them. This shot is a powerful visual representation of theinevitable loneliness that comes with pursuing hollow relationships and the emptiness that Benjamin feels despite the surface excitement of his affair. As the film progresses, Benjamin falls in love with Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's daughter. His relationship with Elaine represents a chance for him to break free from the superficiality and emptiness of his previous affair. However, standing in the way of their love is society's expectations and the influence of both Mrs. Robinson and his parents. The climax of the film occurs when Benjamin interrupts Elaine's wedding to try and stop her from making a mistake. This chaotic and unpredictable scene perfectly captures the desperation and determination Benjamin feels to hold onto the love he has found. The editing and camera work during this scene only add to the intensity, creating a feeling of unease and suspense in the audience. The Graduate is a film that explores the pressures and confusion that many young people experience after graduating from college. Benjamin's experiences mirror the disillusionment that often accompanies adulthood and the search for one's identity and purpose in life. Mike Nichols successfully navigates these themes, using clever cinematography and strong performances from the cast to convey the emotions and conflicts of the characters.Overall, The Graduate is a timeless and thought-provoking film that shines a light on the complexities of love, identity, and the challenges faced by recent graduates. It remains relevant even today, resonating with audiences of all ages and providing a starkreflection of the universal struggles faced by young people in their journey towards self-discovery.。
