Your store isn’t too easy to find.E: You can say that. They’ve moved us to the basement.S: Well, I made it anyway. Could I get some color copies of this flier?E: Sure, how many do you need?S: 500. It’s for a fundraiser I’m organizing, and I need enough copies for each faculty and staff member, also a few to put on bulletin boards.E: Really? What fundraiser?S: Oh, it’s to raise money for a new sandbox at the preschool on campus.E: Oh, do you work there? My wife and I looked into the preschool for our daughter, but we arrived on campus too late for her to enroll.I just started at the university this semester, so maybe we’ll get her in next year.S: No, not exactly. I’m majoring in early childhood education. For a research paper I’ve been spending time there observing the different ways they teach pre-reading skills. I was really surprised by all the learning tools and techniques that they use in the classroom and even on the playground.E: Yea? It’s interesting what they do with kids these days.S: Anyway, there’s another thing that surprised me. I had no idea how sparse their playground is—just a slide, some balls, and a couple of swings for about 45 children! The director told me she’d love to have a big sandbox too, which got me some thinking. I have to do 20 hours of community service to graduate, so I offered to organize a fundraiser to buy a sandbox, and the director really loved that idea. I figured that’ll take 20 hours, at least.E: So what’s your plan to raise the money?S: I got my advisor, Professor Campbell, to teach a parenting workshop there. He’s going to give tips on raising toddlers.E: Great idea. Toddlers can be a challenge. I know that from experience.S: Anyway, the workshop is just three weeks away, so I need to distribute the flyers as soon as possible. Could I get the color copies right now?E: Well, unfortunately our color copiers are undergoing routine maintenance right now, so it might take a day or two, but if you need them right away, you could use one of our black and white copiers. They’re all self-service.S: I guess that’ll be ok. Thanks!E: By the way, how much are you going to charge for that workshop?S: $50, but that registration fee also includes a copy of Professor Campbell’s new parenting book. He wrote this great book about toddlers that sells for $25.E: $50 seems a little high, but since you include the book too...S: Yea, the book has gotten some great reviews, too.E: Hmm... can I have one of your flyers after you make the copies?S: Sure! I’ll give you a few if you want to help me spread the word.1.Why does the student go to see the university employee?A.To get directions to the nearest copy centerB.To order photocopies of a documentC.To get permission to post a sign on a bulletin boardD.To solicit his help on a research project正确答案:B解析:目的主旨题。

The student is a part-time employee at the library.E: Hi, Melissa! How was your economics exam?S: It was actually pretty challenging. Thanks for letting me take time off from here to study for it.E: Well, like we said, when we hired you, your schoolwork is always a priority as long as you give us sufficient notice as to when you need off. When you were out though, we had a staff meeting explaining a couple of things. We’ll be dividing work in a new way, and we’ll also be using a new procedure for employees to keep track of what work they do.S: You mean instead of keeping track of how many hours we work per week?E: No, you’ll still need to keep track of your total hours, so you can get paid each week. The new procedure I’m talking about will be extra.S: And you said the work will be divided differently?E: Yes. You work at the circulation desk, right?S: Right.E: So, right now you check out books for students, log the returned books, and sort them by category so the stock team can put them back on the shelves. Anything else?S: No, that’s about it.E: Ok. Well, we’re expanding that job to have you do some other tasks too, so going forward you will also help students locate books on the shelves and put returned books in their proper places on the shelves.S: Oh, that’ll be good. There are times when I sit at the desk just waiting for students to come by to check out or return books.E: Ok, and now for the tracking procedure. We’re asking employees to keep track of the specific tasks they do and for how long. For example, when you’re at the circulation desk, how much time do you spend checking in returned books and separating them, or how much time do you spend checking out books for students to borrow?S: Wow, and this seems very specific. I’m just wondering why do we have to be so detailed?E: Well, the university wants a written job description for each role, so we’re putting together a summary of student jobs at the library with specific details about each job, what specific tasks it entails and how much of the job is spent on each task. It won’t be as complicated as it sounds. You’ll have a piece of paper listing all the tasks you do, and you’ll just need to write on it how many minutes you spend on each task. You’ll submit it with your weekly timesheet.S: I also wanted to ask for a few days off again. I have a project due for my world history class at the end of the month.E: That’s fine. Please email me the details. For now, go meet with Ms. Stanton in the reference section. She’ll show you how to help students who are looking for specific books.1.What is the conversation mainly about?A.Additional tasks the student will be expected to carry outB.The student’s interest in switching jobs at the libraryC.Procedures the student should use to request time of her workD.An evaluation of the student’s performance at her library job正确答案:A解析:内容主旨题。

Could I talk with you for a minute?P: Sure, Marty. What’s up? Is it about the class assignment this week?S: No, no... I’m almost done... really enjoying it.P: I’m glad to hear that.S: So, well, I’ve been talking to some of the other students in our studio art class and we were wondering who to talk to about maybe buying art supplies that are more environmentally safe for the art classes.P: Well, that’d be me. As the chair of the art department, I do have a say in purchasing decisions, but of course all decisions are voted on by the department faculty. You know... we already buy some eco-friendly products, for example, the easels in your painting studio. They’re made of wood from a South American eucalyptus tree. The trees grow really fast and new trees grow from the stumps of trees that have already been harvested. This is a great renewable resource.S: I didn’t know that. That’s fantastic! We are also considering drawing paper and pencils. There are some really cool companies that use recycled paper to make drawing paper and some pencil companies that make greener products out of wood from sustainable forests.P: Well, I can see you’ve done some research. Why don’t you write up a proposal? You can give us a list with the prices of the eco-friendly supplies you’d like the department to consider, and the faculty can compare that to the current cost of supplies at our next meeting.S: Oh, yeah ... I can appreciate that decisions will also be affected by the cost.P: Well, yes...that’s partly true. Of course, we have a budget for supplies and most of that money has been spent for this year, but you know, the university has been allocating additional funds for more eco-friendly practices. It’s part of their new ‘green campus’initiative.S: Yeah, the solar panels were recently installed on the roof of my dorm, and actually I read an article about the initiative in the campus newspaper. There’s a committee... I even heard there’s student representation that help in decision making related to the implementation of the university’s environmentally friendly practices.P: That’s right! The Green Committee and the solar panels you mentioned are just one of the many things they’ve done. So, I don’t know... given the university’s commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly and the fact that the university does receive partial funding from the state government to support this initiative... you never know!S: Ok... urn, when do you want the figures?P: Well, the next meeting of the art department faculty is at the beginning of next month. That gives you about three weeks.S: That should be enough time. We’ll get to work on it right away. Thanks for your help!1.Why does the student go to see the professor?A.To ask whether students can be represented at an upcoming faculty meeting B.To propose changing the kinds of supplies the art department usesC.To discuss an art project inspired by environmental concernsD.To complain about the lack of materials available to art students正确答案:B解析:目的主旨题。

Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and his English professor. Professor: Hi, Bob. How is it going? Are you enjoying the Introduction to Literature class? Bob: Yeah, it's great. Araby, that short story by James Joyce we read last week, it was awesome. Professor: I'm glad you like it. Most of Joyce's work is very complex. A lot of students say that he is hard to understand. Normally, you wouldn't tackle Joyce in an Intro class, but I'd like to give my first year students a taste of his style, his psychological approach to literature, because, mainly because it influenced other writers.I only wish we had more class time to discuss it. Bob: Me too. So why did you pick Araby instead of some other story? Professor: Well, um, first you should know that Araby is one of fifteen short stories by Joyce in a book called Dubliners. Uh, all the stories are related to one another, and they are set in the same time period. But Araby is the easiest one to follow. Though all the stories in the collection are written in stream of consciousness, which as you know, means they are told through the narrator's thought, through an inner monologue, as opposed to dialogue or an objective description of events. But Araby is easier because it's linear, the story unfold chronologically. Bob: Still, I wish we could read whole novels by Joyce and discussed them in class. Professor: That's what happens in my Master Writer Class. Bob: Master Writer Class? Professor: Yeah, I teach one on Joyce every spring. It's such a privilege, spending an entire term diving into a single body of work. And my students, they bring so much insight to the table that it's easy to forget who the professor is. Bob: Oh, wow. That could actually solve my dilemma, uh, what I originally wanted to ask you? Um, I am working on my schedule for next term, and I've got room for one more course, and I'd like to take more literature. Could I take your Master Writer Class on Joyce? Professor: I'm sorry. I should have mentioned. Uh, Master Writer is an advanced seminar. So students need to get a strong foundation in literary theory and criticism before I let them in the room. Bob: But I have gotten really good grades on all my paper so far, I'm sure I can keep up. Couldn't you make an exception? Professor: Your grades are excellent. But in our intro class, you are reviewing the basics, like plots, setting and character and getting your first real exposure to different literary styles. Bob: But why do I have to study different styles to understand Joyce's novels? Professor: There are a lot of little details involved in interpreting literature. And like with Joyce. His novels have very unique structures. The only way to appreciate how unique they are is by studying a variety of authors. Bob: Oh, OK. So could you suggest a different literature class then? Professor: Sure. There's doctor Clain's course on nineteenth-century novels. It's more focused than the class you're in now.But it will build on your current knowledge base and give you the background you need. That, plus a couple more foundational classes, and you will definitely be ready for my seminar. Bob: Sweet. Thanks. 1.Why does the man go to see the professor? A. Listening ComprehensionSection One:Listening Comprehension听力原文:Listen to a conversation between a student (S) and a university travel administrator (A).S: Thanks for the list of travel agencies. This will really help if I get a chance to go to another conference, but now my question is: you said that the university doesn’t pay for everything, doesn’t cover all the costs of school-related travel.A: Nope, we do cover the cost of the conference itself, the registration fees, but university policy is that we only cover up to a certain amount of travel expenses. We calculate the average cost of traveling to a city, the average cost of food, lodging, etc., and are willing to pay that much back to you.S: OK, so how do I find out what the average costs are?A: Well, on the travel office’s Web page you’ll find a chart with a bunch of cities. Just find the columns for the city that you’re traveling to, like Philadelphia, that’s where you went, right?S: Yeah, the Eastern Literary Society Conference. It was... I went to hear some presentations, you know.A: Ok, so the chart will tell you how much the university will cover for trips to Philadelphia. There will be a column for food, one for transportation, one for hotel, but I’m guessing that...S: Yes, since Philadelphia’s only an hour from here and the conference was just one day, I guess that’s why I wasn’t overly concerned about the expenses, but I did take the train in and of course I ate lunch there. So could I have a copy of the expense form? I’ll need to fill it out.A: Sure, but it’s quicker if you do it online. That way your information goes directly to the travel office. We’ll be in touch later if we need your receipts.S: Ok, I already tried that, but the system wouldn’t let me download the form.A: Really? That’s strange.S: Yeah, it kept asking for my... for a preapproval number.A: Ok, the number your department gave you when you completed the preapproval request.S: Preapproval request? I didn’t know. No one told me about a preapproval request.A: That’s why you’re having trouble. See, the policy is that your department has to preapprove you for the travel, so that we, the university travel office, so we know you’re doing legitimate school-related travel. We can’t be reimbursing people for their personal vacations now, could we?S: Well, how was I supposed to know? I mean, my professor only asked me like two weeks ago after someone else canceled.A: Oh, well that’s it. That student probably filled out a preapproval request. Your department can probably update that form with your information. Then it’ll show up under your name instead, and you can do the online form.S: Oh, really? Let me talk to them and see what I can do. I’ll come back to you if I have questions after that.A: Ok, good luck with that.S: Thanks for your help.1.What are the speakers mainly discussing?A.How the student can get permission to travel to other citiesB.How the student can get reimbursed for travel expensesC.A problem with the travel office Web pageD.A conference the student recently attended正确答案:B解析:内容主旨题。

Listening ComprehensionSection One:Listening Comprehension听力原文:Listen to a conversation between a student (S) and an American history professor (P).S: Professor Farrington, may I ask a question about something you said in class yesterday?P: Sure.S: You mentioned that... about how Park City in Utah went from a boomtown in the 1800s to a ghost town and then became prospero us again. I was, well... that’s an interesting cycle, and..., well, perhaps it might be suitable topic for my research paper?P: Sure, that might make a good topic since similar things happened at other mining towns.S: So, comparing them might be interesting?P: Yeah, absolutely!S: So, what triggered the economic downturn in Park City?P: Well, in 1870 there were fewer than 200 people living in the Park City area. After silver was discovered there the population grew very quickly. I think it reached around 10,000 by 1900, but soon after that the silver that was close to the surface had all been mined, so they had to dig deeper and deeper, which reduced the profit margin not just because it’s time consuming, but going deeper led to problems with flooding. It’s t ime consuming and expensive to pump water out of mines. So, that was one major factor. I mean there were other factors that contributed too like the recession and a stock marketpanic in 1907. If you do write about this, you have to get into that.S: Ok, and it was what... tourism that brought it back again?P: Basically, yes. The ski industry kind of started about the same time in the 1920s. At first it was only a few folks hiking up to the top of the mountain and then skiing down. As the sportbecame popular, so did the mountains around Park City. By the 1960s, it was a major ski resort with thousands of skiers.S: And the same with the other abandoned mining towns?P: Well, some, but some became tourist attractions not because of skiing, but because people were interested in the history. Actually, one old mining town in the middle of the California desert... Bodie, that’s now a state park. It’s popular because the buildings have been preserved as they were in the 1940s.S: Wow! So, maybe I could choose a couple of towns that went through that whole cycle and talk about them in some depth as a way of illustrating the general boom and bust phenomenon... maybe find some first-hand accounts?P: Well, for this, sure, it’d be better to go into some depth about specific towns rather than talking about a lot of them in broad terms. Definitely give it a shot. But you probably won’t be able to find many diaries or personal accounts. Not many people who lived in mining towns could read or write, Oh, and also remember the impact of national events.S: Ok, that’s understandable, the local and the national. Thanks!。

Listening 2
