That 's bad news for the environment —and our wallets —as theseoutdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things. To figure out how much power these devices are using, Callie Babbitt and her colleagues at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for each product throughout its life —from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using the device. This method provided a readout for how homeenergy use has evolved since the early 1990s. Devices were grouped by generation. Desktop computers, basic mobile phones, and box-set TVs defined 1992. Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997. And MP3 players, smartphones, and LCD TVs entered homes in 2002, before tablets and e-readers showed up in 2007.As we accumulated more devices, however, we didn 't throw out our old ones. “The living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids ' room, and s uddenly one day, you have a TV in every room of the house, ” said one researcher. The average number of electronic devices rose from four per household in 1992 to 13 in 2007. We' re not just keeping these old devices —we continue to use them. According to the analysis of Babbitt ' s team, old desktop monitors andbox TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy consumption and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions(排放) more than doubling during the 1992 to 2007window.So what' s the soluti on(解决方案)?The team' s data only went up to 2007, but the researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new electronics that serve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV viewing. They found that more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.32. What does the author think of new devices?A. They are environment-friendly.B. They are no better than the old.C. They cost more to use at home.D. They go out of style quickly.33. Why did Babbitt ' s team conduct the research?A. To reduce the cost of minerals.B. To test the life cycle of a product.C. To update consumers on new technology.D. To find out electricity consumption of the devices.34. Which of the followi ng uses the least en ergy?A.The box-set TV.B.The tablet.C.The LCD TV.D.The desktop computer.35. sense of humor and laughed a lot,not only at home but also at work, had fewer heart problems than people who laughed less, and people who laughed a lot tended to live a longer life than the ones who did not. After reading plenty of information about the benefits of laughing and a careful study of previous papers in this area,a doctor in India started a Laughter Club.Dr.Mandan Kataria's Laughter Club quickly grew into 1,800 groups throughout India and over 6,000 around the world. The Laughter Club had even inspired World Laughter Day,which people celebrate on the first Sunday of May every year.Instructors at the clubs get people laughing not only through jokes but through simple laughing exercises. For example, instructors and participants repeat the chant “hohoho”and “ha-ha-ha” together. What's more, participants also do the“Lion Laughter”by sticking out their tongues and waving their hands around their ears.Otherexercises focus on breathing and simple yoga exercises. In a If the people who lived here2,000years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures?Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle. The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt,Malta,United States(Mississippi and California),Chile,Holivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological(考古学的) group. The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it,due to the combination of the climate(one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year)and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode(腐蚀)it,lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-colored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.1.What can we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?A.They were built as a big map.B.They were formed by nature.C.They are ancient lines in caves.D.They are huge markings in a desert.2.How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive?A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.3.Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?A.Because of the wind at ground level.B.Because of the existence of soft soil.C.Because of the climate and geography.D.Because of the thick sand on the top.4.What does the underlined word“eternal”probably mean?A.Non-stop.B.Ever-lasting.C.Real-life.D.High-end.2、Camp All-StarOne of a Kind Summer Camps for KidsWelcome to Camp All-Star,your No.1summer sports camp for kids!Located on the famous Kents Hill School campus by the beautiful lake,Camp All-Star hosts kids from around the world. When thinking about your next overnight summer camp, consider the best—Camp All-Star!Great Sports Summer Camps for KidsCamp All-Star stands out among the successful camps in theU.S.We have the best sports fields and courts to make your child’s sports camp experience a successful one.Your child can enjoy playing for hours in any of our more than30sports and activities each day.Our camper to staff rate is three to one, which makes it possible for children to receive more careful instruction. We have a wide variety of activities and sports to choose from:fishing, dance, basketball, soccer, baseball, and tennis.Boys and girls,aged8-16,can customize their own schedules in our2,3,4or6week summer camp session for kids. The aim of Camp All-Star is to develop athletic skills, encourage abilities in leadership, fair play and team work, and provide a fun, rewarding and memorable summer sports camp experience. Our staff have the experience and qualified training necessary to ensure that your child has a successful, memorable and enjoyable time at our summer camp.Call Today About Our Overnight Summer Camps for KidsDon’t let your kids waste another summer playing video games and sitting around.Let them enjoy their time and get some exercise at our exciting and friendly summer sports rmation for our upcoming camps can be found on our website. For additional information or questions, contact us today. We hope your kids can join us at Camp All-Star!1.Camp All-Star stands out among the others because it______.A.is surrounded by a beautiful lakeB.provides various activities and sportsC.offers timely information on its websiteD.allows children to play outside all day long2.One of the goals of Camp All-star is to______.A.fire kids’imaginationB.build up kids’confidenceC.develop kids’leadership skillsD.promote kids’self-control3.This advertisement is intended for______.A.parentsB.coachesC.staffD.Campers3、Regardless of how far we’d like to believe gender(性别)equality in the workplace has come, there’s still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world.A2018statistic shows that women nowadays hold just5.8percent of CEOs positions at S&P500companies,according to Catalyst. While it’s not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though,is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area,at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School. In their research,Professor Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed(调查)2,900managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear:Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories. While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders—probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women—this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting,openness,sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly. There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.Obviously,it’s important to consider individual(个人的)differences.Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss.So next time you’re hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes(简历)from female candidates a harder look.1.What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?A.Women are worse than men.B.Men take almost all high positions.C.There is a huge gap between genders.D.Women might behave better in every field.2.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word‘‘inherently”in paragraph4?A.properlyB.potentiallyC.naturallyD.normally3.Which of the following may be the best title of this text?A.How We Can Figure Out The Boss.B.Why Women Are Better Than MenC.Why Women Make Better BossesD.How We Can Tell Gender Difference4.Who might have special interest in this article?A.Job hunters.B.Employers.C.Employees.D.University students.4、In ancient Egypt,a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment.Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food(垃圾食品)later in their trip.In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妆品)section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers'senses.Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping,so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day.Music sells goods, too.Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity.A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these$10million houses.1.Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?A.To save customers time.B.To show they are high quality foods.C.To help sell junk food.D.To sell them at discount prices.2.According to Paragraph3,which of the following encourages customers to buy?A.Opening the store early in the morning.B.Displaying British wines next to French ones.C.Inviting customers to play music.D.Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.3.What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?A.The house structure is a key factor customers consider.B.The more costly the house is,the better it sells.C.An ocean view is much to the customers'taste.D.A good first impression increases sales.4.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.B.To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.C.To report researches on customer behavior.D.To show dishonest business practices.5、How to Excel in Poetry WritingIf you are serious about your poetry, then you should consider the suggestions presented here.①__________Many poets have also used these tips to make poetry publishing possible in their life. finished college at home in Britain,Pat chose to visit Latin America first,so she managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia.Pat spoke a little Spanish,so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind:if you dream in a foreign language,it means that you have really mastered it.Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English. One day,Tim,one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early and had slept badly.Pat was quite angry with him,for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that hedreamed all night and his dream was in English.“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also secretly jealous. Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.“All the people in my dream spoke English,”Tim said.“And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers and magazines and all the TV programs were in English.”“But that's wonderful,”said Pat.“What did all the people say to you?” she asked.“I'm sorry.Miss to shake her belief in the sentence stuck in her mind. Her jealousy had all gone.Staring into the boy's eyes,Pat sensed something wrong hidden there.Obviously, the boy was telling a lie.Seeing the negative effect his behavior would have on her students,Pat decided to teach the boy a lesson.Though she knew only a little Spanish, she decided to scold him using the language. In order to inspire her students to speak English,Pat arranged for several people in the secondary school to have weekly talks, their topics ranging from travelling around the world to language learning methods. After several weeks, many of her students came running to her, telling her that they finally dreamed in English. This time, instead of being jealous,Pat felt proud of them, saying she would also try her best to learn Spanish so that one day she would also dream in Spanish.Ⅲ.概要写作(2017·浙江杭州质检二)【导学号:38144077】阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.As is known to all, sports stars earn large amounts of money every year.LeBron James, the famous American basketball star, for instance, earns an income of more than 20 million dollars a year. Some people hold the view that these stars do not deserve the high pay that they are getting. Some even argue that sports stars do nothing to society apart from entertaining people.Their contributions to society are much less than those made by doctors, firemen, scientists, professors, etc. But I can never agree with that. While sports are for entertainment,it does not mean that they are not important to people's life. Why do so many people go to see football matches and NBA games? It is because they enjoy the games, and they are willing to pay to watch theperformances.Because of the sports stars, our life becomes more exciting. Some sports stars gain honor for their countries, and their countrymen are proud of them. They contribute to the spiritual wellbeing of their people. What's more, sports stars usually are at the top level in their fields. In this world, you have to pay if you want the best.It is the same with sports.Skills in sports are like the skills in works of art.People will not say that Da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa was bought with too much money. Most stars are skilled in their own field not only because of their talents but also because of their hard training. They have to keep performing at their peak to earn that good income.Their influence on the national economy can not be overlooked.Take NBA in America, for example. The stars help to support not only the basketball industry, but also other related industries like sportswear and sports equipment.Sports stars also make constant appearances in advertisements.Since they are well known in the world, they attract many people's attention, which often leads to an immediate boom in the sales of the products that are advertised by them.I hope one day their accomplishments will be fully 专题限时集训(二) 读后续写训练2A阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold winter day.A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth(收费站).“I'm paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,”she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed,“Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”It turned out that the woman,Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend's refrigerator:“Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down as soon as she got home.Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down in her diary.“I thought it was beautiful,”she said, explaining why she'd taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters,“like a message from above.”Her husband,Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson,a local news reporter.Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it,she didn't know where it came from or what it really meant. She really wanted to find out the originator(创作者) of this phrase and know about the story of it.Two days later,Alice got a call from Anne Herbert,a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days. The restaurant was decorated in a simple style and the owner had a kind heart. He regularly handed out food to the beggars nearby, which left a deep impression on Anne. Then Alice asked her what her idea was.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’tbe a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.24.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.Your life style.B.Your life value.C.Your trouble in life.D.Your life experience.25.Why does the author say they are inspired every day?A.They possess different kinds of superpowers.B.They have got the power to change the world.C.Some people around them are making the world better.D.There are many powerful people in their life and work.26.What does the author stress in Paragraph 5?A.Learning more and contributing more to a cause.B.Rising above self and acting to help others.C.Working hard to get a bigger opportunity.D.Trying your best to help the poor.27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better.B.Much more progress will be made in the near future.C.The work on health is the most valuable experience.D.People’s efforts have been materially rewarded.C(2018课标全国Ⅰ,C)Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系)groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages;the Americas about 1,000;Africa 2,400;and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon(eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150), Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia(one, with a question-mark):none of these seems to have much chance of survival.28.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?A.They developed very fast.B.They were large in number.C.They had similar patterns.D.They were closely connected.29.Which of the following best explains“dominant”underlined in paragraph 2?plex.B.Advanced.C.Powerful.D.Modern.30.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?A.About 6,800.B.About 3,400.C.About 2,400.D.About 1,200.31.What is the main idea of the text?A.New languages will be created.B.People’s lifestyle s are reflected in languages.C.Human development results in fewer languages.D.Geography determines language evolution.D(2018课标全国Ⅰ,D)We may think we’re a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight of something shiny and new, but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices(装置) well after they go out of style. That’s bad news for the environment—and our wallets—as these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things. To figure out how much power these devices are using, Callie Babbitt and her colleagues at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for each product throughout its life—from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using the device. This method provided a readout for how home energy use has evolved since the early 1990s. Devices were grouped by generation. Desktop computers, basic mobile phones, and box-set TVs defined 1992. Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997. And MP3 players, smartphones, and LCD TVs entered homes in 2002, before tablets and e-readers showed up in 2007.As we accumulated more devices, however, we didn’t throw out our old ones. “The living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids’ room, and s uddenly one day, you have a TV in every room of the house,”said one researcher. The average number of electronic devices rose from four per household in 1992 to 13 in 2007. We’re not just keeping these old devices—we continue to use them. According to the analysis of Babbitt’s team, old desktop monitors and box TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy consumption and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions(排放) more than doubling during the 1992 to 2007 window. So what’s the soluti on(解决方案)?The team’s data only went up to 2007, but the researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new electronics that serve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV viewing. They found that more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.32.What does the author think of new devices?A.They are environment-friendly.B.They are no better than the old.C.They cost more to use at home.D.They go out of style quickly.33.Why did Babbitt’s team conduct the research?A.To reduce the cost of minerals.B.To test the life cycle of a product.C.To update consumers on new technology.D.To find out electricity consumption of the devices.34.Which of the following uses the least energy?A.The box-set TV.B.The tablet.C.The LCD TV.D.The desktop computer.35.What does the text suggest people do about old electronic devices?A.Stop using them.B.Take them apart.C.Upgrade them.D.Recycle them.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)(2017课标全国Ⅲ)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

difficult 7 (see). Many people were passing through the cave,so the paintings were losing their color. 8 (sad),people can no longer visit the cave. However, another set of cave paintings has been
