This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. These days, Americans worry most about an economic recovery that President Obama calls "painfully slow." But on Saturday millions will remember the day al-Qaida terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.Another hijacked plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania when passengers rebelled. Close to three thousand people died that day.Next year will be a big anniversary, ten years since the day Americans call 9-11.But this September eleventh comes at an uneasy time. A large number of Americans say they oppose plans to build an Islamic center near the World Trade Center site in New York. This week attention centered on a Christian minister with a small following in the state of Florida.Reverend Terry Jones said he would mark the 9-11 anniversary by burning copies of the Quran. He said he wanted to send a message to Islamic extremists.TERRY JONES: "We are not hateful toward Muslims. We are not aiming this at Muslims, we are aiming this at Sharia law."His church in Gainesville has maybe fifty members. On Thursday, Mr. Jones met with a local Islamic leader in Florida and agreed to cancel the burning. He said the decision was part of an agreement to move the proposed mosque in New York. But the imam leading that project denied any such agreement. In reaction, Mr. Jones said he was not canceling the burning, but was suspending it.Political and religious leaders around the world had condemned him. The plan even led the State Department to warn American travelers to avoid places where protests might take place.President Obama said burning Qurans could endanger American troops and invite more extremism. Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Mr. Jones on Thursday to urge him to reconsider.Administration officials called the idea of burning Qurans "un-American." But they also agreed that it would be within constitutional rights, like protesters who burn American flags. The Constitution guarantees free speech and bars the government from restricting the practice of religion.President Obama has worked to improve relations with the Islamic world. On Thursday he extended greetings to the world's Muslims for Eid al-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan.APA memorial with pictures of some of the 343 New York City firefighters killed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001But many Muslim groups in the United States are limiting celebrations on Saturday because of the timing of Eid and 9-11 this year. A Muslim student leader at George Washington University, for example, called on Muslim students to take part in a day of community service. On Friday, a new study said national security agencies have not changed enough to deal with new terrorist threats against the United States.Experts warned of a growing threat from Americans going to other countries to train and work with terrorists. At least forty-three American citizens or residents linked to militant groups were charged with or convicted of terrorism crimes last year. These cases were in the United States and other countries, and were the most since 9-11.The two former chairmen of the 9-11 Commission that investigated the attacks led the study. And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. October 2, 2010100110.01'The Social Network' Tells True Story of Worldwide Phenomenon, FacebookAlan Silverman | Hollywood"People want to go on the Internet and check out their friends, so why not build a website that offers the friends, pictures, profiles ..." "This idea is potentially worth millions of dollars.""Millions!"Getting dates, not making money seemsto have been the motivation for MarkZuckerberg in 2003 when, smarting froma break-up, the Harvard student andcomputer whiz sat down at the keyboardwith his best friend Eduardo.Their "Facemash" website became aninstant hit on campus. It took a fewrefinements to expand the scope and turnit into something that captured theattention of the world just by posting information members want their friends to know."You don't know my name, do you? How do you go to a party and you meet somebody ...""Amelia Ritter, but you prefer Amy. You're from Orinda. Your father is in commercial real estate and your mother is 10 years sober." "What's my major?""French. Your major is French."Facebook quickly grows into a global connection with some 500 million Andrew Garfield, left, andJesse Eisenberg in ColumbiaPictures' "The SocialNetwork."'friends;' but, as the movie's advertising points out, you don't get that many friends without making a few enemies."You stole our website!""They are saying we stole the Facebook ...""I know what it says.""So did we?"The legal battle pits friend against friend and shatters relationships. English actor Andrew Garfield, who plays Eduardo Saverin, says the technology they invented is not the story."Facebook is just a backdrop to these incredibly universal themes that are playing out between people," explains Garfield, "like brotherhood, love, betrayal, power - all of these Shakespearean, Greek things."Jesse Eisenberg stars as the computer genius at the center of the tempest, but he never spoke with the real Mark Zuckerberg (who, like the other principals, did not cooperate with the making of the movie)."I spent six months thinking about him every day," says Eisenberg. " I developed a great affection for my character and, of course, by extension, the man. I'd be very interested to meet him."The Social Network script is by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who says the multiple (and conflicting) versions of the truth challenged and intrigued him."The antagonist and protagonist in this story shifts as we go along," notes Sorkin. "I don't think this movie belongs to any particular drama, but the one that it is most closely related to is actually courtroom drama, where we are certain of someone's guilt or innocence at the beginning and we change our minds five times all the way through. Strictly speaking, Mark is the anti-hero for the first hour and 55 minutes and the final five minutes being the tragic hero, which means that he has paid a price and is experiencing remorse. Protagonist and antagonist in this case don't relate to 'good guy' and 'bad guy.'Sorkin insists his script is fair to all sides in the ongoing argument; but star Eisenberg says it is important to keep in mind that The Social Network is the dramatized version of events, not a documentary."In the movie that Aaron created is a guy that is desperately trying to fit in and doesn't have the social wherewithal to do so. I could certainly relate to that," admits Eisenberg. "Almost to cope, he creates this incredible tool to interact in a way that he feels comfortable. Because of his incredible insights, 500 million other people also feel comfortable using that tool. It's just a fascinating character, complicated in all the right ways, so even though he acts in a way that might be hurtful to other characters, by the end of the movie it's totally understandable. The Social Network, directed by David Fincher and executive produced by Kevin Spacey, also features pop star Justin Timberlake as an early Facebook supporter, Sean Parker, founder of the Napster file-sharing website. The eclectic, electronic-themed soundtrack is composed by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor.100210.02Golfer Arjun Atwal Shines as India's First US PGA Tour Winner Teresa SullivanDifficult roadArjun Atwal hit a low point in July when he lost his U.S. PGA Tour playing card, which ended his qualifying exemption status and his eligibility to compete in the PGA's lucrative season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs. A month later, Atwal's season was over, and he was at home in Orlando, Florida, contemplating whether to watch the first FedEx Cup playoff tournament on television or maybe take his wife and two young sons to the nearby Disney World theme park. But having just won his first PGA Tour title, the 16-year veteran was not dwelling on the fact he had not qualified for the playoffs.Atwal's one-stroke victory at the 2010 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina August 22 had made him the firstIndian-born player to win a U.S. PGA event, and the first Monday qualifier in 24 years to claim a Tour title. It also netted him twice what he earned in all of 2009 and gave him a two-year Tour exemption. The Calcutta native told VOA Sports he is delighted about hisground-breaking win and looking forward to next year."I definitely want to do this again, winmore," said Atwal. "And I'm lookingforward to being in contention again, definitely. Definitely. I'm going to beplaying in my first Masters next year, andthat will be exciting - all the bigtournaments, as well, so it should be fun, should be a lot of fun."Prelude to successAt the Wyndham Championship, Atwalopened with a dazzling 9-under-par, 61 on the course at the Sedgefield Country Club to take a first round lead. He led or shared the top of the leaderboard through most of the next two rounds, but entered the final 18 holes three strokes ahead of the field. At one point during the fourth round, he and six other players shared the best score. But Atwal held his ground, shook off his nerves and made par on his final shot of the final hole to earn a spot in the record books.Atwal said he was glad the Wyndham tournament was televised live in India where his parents were watching, even though it was the middle of the night there."All the people that called me - even the media - or my friends and family - they were all up watching until like 2:30 in the morning in India, and I think that's just beautiful, because I know I'm not the most popular name here in America, but in India it would be great to have all the people in India watch this and maybe inspire a few to come out and pursue their dreams in golf, or whatever it is," he said.Arjun Atwal, of India, holds theSam Snead Cup on the 18thgreen after winning theWyndham Championship golftournament in Greensboro,N.C, 22 Aug 2010Who is he?No stranger to success and setting golf records, Atwal said he started his professional golfing career in 1994. He was named the Asian Tour's rookie of the year in 1995.? He won a number of tournaments in India before going on to win titles and raise the profile of Indian golfers on the Asian and European Tours and the second tier PGA Nationwide Tour. In 2002, Arjun became the first Indian golfer to win on the European Tour. The following year, he won the 2003 Asian Tour Order of Merit title and became the first Asian player to claim two European Tour wins. But playing on the U.S. PGA Tour was what he had yearned for since his youth in India. The years of hard work paid off when Atwal earned his first Tour card in 2003, the same year he settled in the United States. He landed in the top-25 at several PGA events in 2004, and in 2005 Atwal had a career-best five top-10 U.S. finishes. After failure, victoryArjun's advice to young people in India is simple: work hard and follow your dreams."If you have a dream, to do whatever, and it's not just golf - in any sport in India - just to follow it, and not let anyone tell you any different," said Atwal. "And whatever work you put into it is what you're going to get out of it, so that's what I've always believed in. The harder you work, the better it gets. And that would be my message to all the kids over there."But Atwal has faced lean times in recent years, with trouble following him both on and off the golf course. In 2007, he was involved in a fatal car accident that reports say occurred when another driver was trying to drag race Atwal on a road in Orlando, Florida. After a year-long investigation, he was cleared of any wrongdoing in the other driver's death, but the apparent stress took a toll on his game.In 2009, weight training injuries to both shoulders left Atwal sidelined for four months before he returned too soon and played poorly as aresult. His game continued to deteriorate until he missed six consecutive tournament cuts and lost his Tour card when he did not earn enough to remain in the required top 125 on the PGA's money list.Love of the gameNow, a rejuvenated Atwal shrugged off missing the 2010 FedEx Cup playoffs, and said he expects to finish the year playing most of the fall series events in the United States as well as some tournaments overseas. He might even play in India."The Indian Open is on in the first week in December, so I would love to play in that, but we'll see how the rest of the schedule fits in with that, so I haven't decided yet, but I would love to," Atwal said.In his youth, Atwal said he played soccer and cricket like many children in India, but shifted his focus solely on golf not long after his father introduced him to the sport when he was 14 years old."My dad took me to our club there, in Calcutta, India," said Atwal. "And on weekends, he would spend time with me, and he taught me how to play, and that's basically how I got started."And Atwal fell in love with the game."Once I started playing golf, I basically had no time for anything else because I got 'the bug,' you know, like they say, and I just wanted to practice and get better, and see how good I could get," he said. Atwal said his parents were thrilled about his big win at the 2010 Wyndham Championship, especially his dad."He always talked about me playing on the PGA Tour and winning out here," said Arjun Atwal. "And then, I came close so many times, in '05 and in '06. I had, maybe, lost in a playoff, and three putted the last hole on one of the tournaments to not get in the playoff, so I came close, but this was just awesome for them."Sounds like it was pretty awesome for Arjun Atwal, too.100210.03Explosions During Nigerian Independence Celebrations Kill 8 Scott Stearns | DakarTwo car bombs went off in Abuja and there was also a smaller explosion nearer the parade grounds -- all claimed by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta which issued a statement saying there is nothing worth celebrating after 50 years of failure. The explosions did not disrupt theindependence ceremonies wherePresident Goodluck Jonathan said that onthis day in 1960 the new citizens of a newcountry were full of hopes."Nigerians were filled with expectations asthe Union Jack was lowered and thegreen-white-green flag was raised in itsplace," said President Jonathan. "A newcountry was born. A new journey hadstarted on a route never taken before. The future was pregnant with promise."In a written statement, the president's office said the bombings are a "low, dirty and wicked act of desperation by criminals and murderers." It said the president grieves with families who have lost loved ones and wants those behind the attacks to know that they will be found and "will pay dearly for this heinous crime."Over the last 50 years, that promise has not always been delivered on as Nigeria suffered through a civil war and long years of military rule. Today, President Jonathan says many Nigerians believe the dreams and expectations of independence have not been fulfilled."Not only do people despair over the slow pace of progress, some have A Nigerian police officer walkspast the burnt out shell of acar, after a car bomb explodedin Abuja, Nigeria, 1 Oct 2010in fact given up on the country," added Jonathan. "Some believe that if the colonial masters had stayed longer, Nigeria may have been better for it. Our troubles and our failures are well-cataloged."President Jonathan says despite serious challenges, Nigerians have cause to celebrate their nationhood and look forward to a brighter future.Mr. Jonathan wants to be a part of that future by running for president next year. But his campaign illustrates one of Nigeria's greatest weaknesses - regional rivalries. An informal political agreement says the next Nigerian president should be from the north to finish out what would have been the second term of the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua instead of continuing on with Mr. Jonathan, who is from the south.Mistrust between the mainly-Muslim north andpredominantly-Christian south was exploited by British colonial rulers who entrenched separate regional councils in the 1947 constitution, a divide-and-rule tactic denounced at the time by the man who would become Nigeria's first president, Nnamdi Azikiwe."As delegates of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, chosen by our people in order to demand for a more democratic constitution, to modify foreign laws affecting our land, minerals, and chiefs," explained Azikiwe. "And to request the British government to grant us more political responsibility to enable us to take an active part in the management of our affairs within the framework of the British Empire."Yusuff Maitama Sule was a minister in that first government."One would have thought that the crisis of uniting this country should have started when they were here," added Sule. "But perhaps because of the policy which they had been identified with of divide-and-rule, they kept the different parts of the country separate for quite some time. And left the country like this. This made it very difficult for the Nigerians leaders after independent to bring about national unity."Fifty years later, newspaper editor John Ege says the golden jubilee is worth celebrating, if only because Nigeria has survived so much."Nigeria at 50, that is an achievement. It is worth celebrating that we lived up to 50 years. It is not easy," noted Ege. "There have been significant improvements in the life of Nigeria. We have the Internet. We have so many things in Nigeria apart from the power failure and the infrastructural decay. But there is hope."But computer saleswoman Helen Arerota is not so sure."Our country Nigeria at 50, we are still struggling," said Areota. "Even crawling is an understatement. It is a child that is still sitting. Military or non-military, the leaders in their state of mind they are corrupt." Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka says Nigeria as a nation is still a work in progress."You can unveil the flag as much as you want, you can recite the national pledge as long as you want you can sing that banal, tawdry national anthem as loudly as you like, that project is still in the making," said Soyinka.Soyinka says next year's vote is a chance to regain ground lost when the military annulled Nigeria's 1993 election."If Nigerians still go to this election hammer and tongs with that mentality of the most ruthless killer take all - not just winner take all, but killer take all - then of course this election is going to be a disaster," noted Soyinka. "It's possible; a free and fair election can only come about if Nigerians recover that sense of self worth that made them act in a disciplined and truthful manner towards one another in the election of 1993."Then-military-ruler Ibrahim Babangida annulled that 1993 vote, which is widely seen as Nigeria's fairest ever. The retired general is now a candidate in next year's election.100210.04Chemists Take First Steps in Making Cancer DrugArt Chimes | St. Louis, MissouriThe drug Taxol is a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer, but it's very expensive and complicated to manufacture. Now, scientists at Tufts University and theMassachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) say they've taken the first steps tomake the drug using a commonbacterium.Taxol was first found in the bark of thePacific Yew tree decades ago. Like manycomplex chemicals, it is the result of aseries of steps that in this case all happenin the tree.MIT chemical engineering professor Gregory Stephanopoulos and colleagues have begun the process of making Taxol in the lab, starting with a genetically engineered form of E. coli, a safe variety of the bacterium that's usually in the news in stories about food poisoning."It is the bacterium of choice for a lot of molecular biology," he explained, "so there are many, many tools available for working with E. coli, and these tools allow researchers to 'knock out' genes and introduce new genes into E. coli."By genetically manipulating the microbe, the scientists were able to take the first chemical steps in the process that, in nature, eventually leads to Taxol."So E. coli, that little bacterium, acts as a little chemical factory. In this way it replaces an equivalent chemical process which may require high temperatures and pressures and expensive solvents and all of these National CancerInstitute/Nancy LankfordThis photo of a Pacific Yewtree was taken in Mt. Hood,Oregon.things — all of that is replaced by a single bacterium that's been property engineered to do that," said Stephanopoulos.Another advantage is that the intermediate chemical molecules can themselves be studied and tested for any possible therapeutic effects they might have.Although the process, if perfected, may synthesize a drug found in tree bark, Stephanopoulos says it's important to remember that Taxol —and possibly other, undiscovered medicines — originate in nature."It relies on samples from plants from the rainforests, from different sources, because the diversity that exists in these habitats gives the opportunity for the production of many, many, many different types of molecules, some of which may have very potent therapeutic properties."So he says it is important to continue prospecting in the natural world in the hopes of discovering pharmaceutical molecules, even if they are eventually manufactured in ways different than how they are grown in nature.MIT chemical engineering professor Gregory Stephanopoulos and his colleagues published their research in the journal Science. 11。

How rotational grazing works. Transcript of radio broadcast: 19 January 2010 Listen to Show - (Tip: Left-click, or right-click and choose "Save...") Download (MP3) Listen to Show - Stream (MP3)

Experts say rotational grazing is good for the land and the animals, and it can save money. This form of grazing can reduce the need for pesticide 杀虫剂 treatments by reducing the growth of weeds. And it can limit the need for chemical fertilizers by letting animal waste do the job of natural fertilizer. Rotational grazing can even help prevent wildfires by keeping grasslands in good condition. Letting animals feed continually and intensively in the same grazing areas can require costly replanting. Animals eat the most desirable growth first. When that keeps happening, the roots do not have enough time to recover. As a result, less desirable plants may replace them. Intensively used grasslands are also harmed as the soil is continually crushed under the weight of heavy animals. And the animals usually avoid their own waste, so that reduces the amount of good grazing space even more. Experts say that while rotational grazing can save money over time, it also requires planning. And that starts with a good map to mark fences, water supplies and grazing areas. Changing methods of grazing also requires time. Farmers may want to put up electric fences to enclose grazing areas, called paddocks. The paddocks will need water. Some farmers design paths for animals from different paddocks to drink from a common watering place. Farmers can start rotational grazing by removing animals from a pasture when the grass is eaten to less than five centimeters. The pasture is then kept empty until the grass grows to more than fifteen centimeters high. Experts say sheep and goats may require special preparations. They may need stronger fences than other animals. And while they eat the grass, they may need guard animals to protect them from animals that would like to eat them.

VOA常速英语:Austin's SXSW Festivals Continue to Expand2010-04-08Austin, Texas calls itself the "Live Music Capital of the World." That's certainly true for the 10 days in mid-March each year when the annual South By Southwest Music, Film and Interactive festivals attract tens of thousands of visitors to town.Bob Schneider's "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)" was named Song of the Year at the 2010 Austin Music Awards, the event closing this year's edition of the South By Southwest Music Festival. Perhaps they should change the name of the awards to "The Bob's," as he and his band had 10 wins this year, including Musician of the Year and Album of the Year.Started in 1987 as a way to bring national attention to Texas musicians like Schneider, South by Southwest is a now week-long event with performers from every continent arriving in Austin, trying to get the attention of booking agents, managers, publishers, record labels, radio presenters, critics and others in the music industry.Every year, the international presence at South By Southwest expands. This year, 642 acts from 59 countries were invited to perform. They included Nneka, who came from Nigeria to promote her new CD, "Concrete Jungle." The singer fell ill before her official set, but carried on to perform several showcases of her soul-Afropop blend. At a time when many business conferences are showing a decrease in attendance, South By Southwest is growing. The music festival had more than 13,000 registrants this year, an 11 percent jump from 2009. The South By Southwest Film and Interactive festivals also saw an increase in registrations this year. The economic impact of the South By Southwest festivals is immense. In 2009, South By Southwest injected more than $99 million into the local economy, and predictions for this year top $100 million. That figure includes dollars spent by conference attendees in Austin's restaurants, hotels and merchants, including Waterloo Records. Known worldwide for an extensive selection of all kinds of music, Waterloo turns its parking lot a music venue during South By Southwest. More than 25 bands played or signed autographs there this year. Among them, rock legends Cheap Trick and John Hiatt, who performed several South By Southwest events to promote his new CD "The Open Road."It's not just attendee figures that are increasing, the number of South By Southwest performers are on the rise as well. In its 24th year, the event featured more than 2,000 artists performing at venues around town. In addition, hundreds of other bands, not part of the official proceedings, also flock to town, and play in driveways, backyards, storefronts, anywhere they can!South By Southwest week can be a stressful one for musicians. "Matt The Electrician" is based in Austin, and has a new CD called "Animal Boy." He used to worry so much about playing South By Southwest showcases and impressing the right people that it wasn't fun. So he changed his game plan."My general goal the last three years is to stop all of my emotional connections to the politics of the music industry and of 'South By,' not having anything to do with that," says Matt. "I used to have a lot of expectations about what that [South By Southwest] meant and what it was for. And what I was supposed to use it for. And that [stopping] did wonders for my outlook! I could just have a good time playing a whole bunch of day parties, play some stuff at night that was free, see my friends, and not feel like I was missing something, or that I had to do anything. And so now I have a great time!"On the first day of South By Southwest 2010, word came of the death of singer-songwriter Alex Chilton. One of his bands, Big Star, was scheduled to reunite for a panel discussion at the conference, and a show on Saturday night. That set turned into a benefit for his family, with Big Star's remaining members joined by Mike Mills of R.E.M, M Ward, Amy Speace and others for a trip through the Big Star catalog. The show closed with Susan Cowsill and The Watson twins singing "September Gurls."。

That program, launched in November, could inject six hundred billion dollars into the economy. The aim is to increase economic growth by lowering long-term interest rates. That would reduce borrowing costs for businesses and individuals. But long-term rates have risen since the Fed launched its latest program of so-called quantitative easing, known as "QE2."The rates are up in part because investors are concerned about government policies. But experts say investors may also be more hopeful about the economy and looking for investments with higher returns than Treasury securities. One way to get a sense of how Americans feel about the economy is through retail sales. Consumer demand drives about seventy percent of the nation's economic activity. The National Retail Federation says its members employ twenty-five million people in the retail and services industry. Those businesses reported almost two and a half trillion dollars in sales last year.APThe Monday after Thanksgiving is a big day for Internet shopping. Online sales during Cyber Monday have grown since the day got its name in 2005Terry Lundgren is chief executive of Macy's, the company that owns Macy's and Bloomingdales department stores.TERRY LUNDGREN: "Retail and restaurants represent one in five jobs in America. So if we do well, we grow, than we're going to be the ones that will start to lead us into a recovery and out of the difficulty that we've had in terms of job hiring, unemployment and all of those challenging issues that relate to that."The kinds of stores where sales are up also says something about the economy. Stores with the lowest prices do well in hard economic times. But the retail federation said at the end of November that discounters had fewer shoppers this year. Stores that sell jewelry and other higher-priced items have seen sales grow.Another change: Americans are less willing to buy on credit. Over forty percent of holiday shoppers said they planned to mainly use debit cards instead of credit cards. Instead of borrowing money, debit cards take money directly from a bank account. And that's the VOA Special English Economics Report, written by Mario Ritter and Mil Arcega. I'm Steve Ember.O. Henry MuseumDOUG JOHNSON: One of America's best-loved writers of short stories was William Sydney Porter -- better known as O. Henry. Beginning in eighteen ninety-three he lived with his family in a house in Austin, Texas. It is now a museum. Katherine Cole has our story.KATHERINE COLE: Visitors to central Austin will find many huge hotels and modern buildings. It would be easy to miss one very small, old house where one of America's favorite writers once lived. It is now called the O. Henry Museum. It was saved from destruction, moved, and turned into a museum in nineteen thirty-four. The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of O. Henry.William Porter rented this house in Austin and lived there with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum belonged to the Porters. Others didnot, but are in the house to recreate the way it looked during their lifetime. Our guide takes us into the living room.William Sydney Porter, better known as O. HenryGUIDE: "Another important piece in the room is the original photograph over here. It was taken here in the house about eighteen ninety-five. The piano dates back to the eighteen sixties. His wife took lessons on it when she first moved to Austin."William Porter did not start his career as a successful writer. He worked at a pharmacy, farm, land office and bank. He also loved words and writing. The museum has special proof of Porter's love of language -- his dictionary.GUIDE: "Very, very well used. It's said that he has read every word in that dictionary."Porter started a small publication called "The Rolling Stone."GUIDE: "We have a copy of the Rolling Stone magazine. He wasn't being published early on, so he published himself."His funny stories, poems, and drawings were published in the magazine. But it was too costly to continue for long, so he closed the project after about one year.Other troubles would lead the Porters to leave Austin. Porter was accused of financial wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job. Fearing a trial, he fled the country. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced trial and was found guilty. He served three and a half years in a federal prison in Ohio.William Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it. It provided him with time to write. By the time of his release, he had published fourteen stories and was becoming well known as O. Henry.Porter would later move to New York City and find great success there. He published over three hundred eighty stories in the last eight years of his life. One of his most famous stories is "The Gift of the Magi." You can hear it next Saturday, December twenty-fifth, on the Special English program AMERICAN STORIES.The Great HoudiniDOUG JOHNSON: Our listener question this week comes from Anemina Raente Vaijero who wants to know about the life of magician Harry Houdini. His real name was Ehrich Weisz. He was born in Budapest, Hungary in eighteen seventy-four. His father was a rabbi, a Jewish religious leader. His family moved to the United States two years later.Young Ehrich loved show business. At the age of nine, he called himself "The Prince of the Air" as he performed on a swing high above the audience. But Ehrich always dreamed of becoming a magician. One of his favorite entertainers was a French magician named Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. Ehrich took his last name, changed the pronunciation, added an "i" and began calling himself Harry Houdini. At first, he performed many different kinds of magic. But in eighteen ninety-nine, he decided to spend most of his time working on "escapes."Harry Houdini began performing his escape from the Chinese Water Torture Cell in 1913One of his most famous tricks was the "Chinese Water Torture." His feet were locked together and he was lowered, upside down, into a glass box filled with water. A curtain was placed in front of the box so the audience could not see how he did the trick. Several minutes would go by. Just when everyone was sure the Great Houdini had drowned, the curtain would drop. There stood Houdini on the stage, free from the deadly box.Harry Houdini also was famous for escaping from handcuffs. He said he would give one hundred dollars to anyone who could lock him into a set of handcuffs from which he could not escape. In his long career, he never had to pay the money.Harry Houdini enjoyed a long career as a magician and escape artist. He wrote books and performed in movies. He became the most famous magician in the world. But it all came to an end on Halloween, October thirty-first, nineteen twenty-six. Houdini died after being hit several times in the stomach by a college student. In October, the Jewish Museum in New York City opened an exhibit called "Houdini: Art and Magic." Visitors can see old photographs, posters and videos of his escapes. They can also see some of the things he used in his magic tricks, including a straitjacket and eleven pairs of handcuffs.Although Houdini did not believe in talking with the dead, his wife, Bess, tried to communicate with his spirit. Did she succeed? This Sunday on the Special English program PEOPLE IN AMERICA we will tell more about Houdini's magic and how he lived and died. And we will also tell you why the words "Rosabelle, believe" are important for magicians around the world.Big Money Music MakersDOUG JOHNSON: Americans attended fewer live music shows this year. And there were fewer concerts than last year. That is the report from Billboard Magazine's yearly study of the subject. But "Billboard's Boxscore" also shows a few musicians still had some very profitable concert tours this year. Barbara Klein has more.BARBARA KLEIN: Who made the most money this year in a concert series? Rock and roll band Bon Jovi. Billboard says it has sold more than one hundred forty-five million dollars worth of tickets. The band has played sixty-nine sold-out shows. "The Circle Tour" continues into next year. Bon Jovi will have performed in thirty countries during the series of shows.Recently, the twenty-seven year old band released a greatest hits album. Here Bon Jovi performs "I'll Be There for You" from nineteen eighty-eight.(MUSIC)Lady Gaga also had a big year with her concert series. She made about one hundred ten million dollars on her tour. She performed at more than one hundred twenty shows.Last week, Billboard magazine named Lady Gaga its Artist of the Year. Only six other women have made the list. They include names like Madonna and Taylor Swift. Here is Lady Gaga performing her Grammy-nominated song "Bad Romance."(MUSIC)Finally, the Irish band U2 also had successful concerts this year. The stage design of "U2 360" puts the band in the middle of the audience.U2 formed in nineteen seventy-eight. It has been together even longer than Bon Jovi. We leave you with a U2 song from two thousand. Here is "Beautiful Day."(MUSIC)DOUG JOHNSON: I'm Doug Johnson. A new study says the loss of biodiversity may make humans more vulnerable to infectious diseases.Biodiversity is one of the ways to measure the health of an eco-system. And the healthier an eco-system is, the better off we are. That's because animals, plants and even microbes can act as a buffer between people and pathogens.Associate Professor Felicia Keesing, an ecologist at Bard College in Annandale, New York, is the lead author of the study."Biodiversity is the diversity of genes, species and eco-systems that occupy the earth. Most of the time when we talk about biodiversity, we mean the diversity of species," she says.Keesing says the study adds a new reason to protect the environment."People have always recognized that there's some sort of esthetic value in having all of these different creatures living on earth with us. Many people feel that there's an ethical responsibility to protect them. But in the last couple of decades, scientists have begun to document ways in which biodiversity is actually providing services to us. Such services become practical reasons for protecting biodiversity as well," she says. It's long been known that biodiversity helps provide clean water, cycles nutrients through the eco-system, and absorbs carbon from the atmosphere. But Keesing says the fact that biodiversity protects humans from disease is a compelling reason for conservation.Sucking up pathogensKeesing says, "What we've seen over and over again in different studies that we describe in our paper is that in diverse systems the species that are present either reduce the number of disease bearing organisms by competing with them. Or they suck up pathogens, sort of vacuum up pathogens, and then don't transmit them again."That protection suffers as biodiversity is lost. Keesing says one example is Lyme Disease, which is a common tick-borne bacterial illness in the United States."If you have a low diversity system, the species that are present always include white footed mice. And white footed mice are very, very good at transmitting the Lyme bacterium back out so that humans are at risk," she says.Eco-systems under attackBiodiversity faces many threats all over the world. The biggest, she says, is land conversion."We're destroying habitats," she says, "So there are fewer places for organisms to live. But there are also a lot of other threats. The key ones are also climate change. So as the climate changes species are struggling and in some cases going extinct because they can't adapt quickly enough – or they have nowhere to go that has the appropriate environmental conditions."Other threats to biodiversity include the spread of invasive species of plants and animals, as well as overhunting or overharvesting of species."In many ways, the biggest threat is that all of these things are happening at the same time and interacting with each other," she says.Keesing rejects the idea that the loss of biodiversity is simply a matter of survival of the fittest, with humans being the most fit."Our survival," she says, "is actually linked to the survival of these other species. So, neither our short term nor our long term survival prospects are increased because we're destroying other species."Scientists are also considering what a loss of biodiversity means for such diseases as Ebola in Africa. In other words, could it mean the disease could become more common and spread to new areas if there's a weak biodiversity buffer? The Bard College associate professor says the effects of biodiversity loss are so clear, there's no reason to delay protecting the Earth's eco-systems.Climate Change: More Funding Needed for Agriculture AdaptationJoe DeCapua06 December 2010A U-N agency says there are major funding gaps in efforts to help the agricultural sector adapt to climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization, the FAO, says this could affect food security. The warning comes as the U-N Climate Change Conference continues in Cancun, Mexico. The World Bank estimates it will cost about $2.5 billion a year – for the next 40 years – to help agriculture in developing countries adapt to climate change. Other estimates say costs could run as high at $14 billion a year. However, the FAO says, "Available financing mechanisms are substantially insufficient to meet the climate change and food security challenges faced by the agricultural sector." This, despite the fact that the FAO says there are many examples of how agriculture can become more resilient.FAO Senior Environmental Economist Leslie Lipper says, "It's not just setting up the mechanisms; it's actually getting a commitment of the resources. One of the points in the FAO document is that there's not enough investment resources being committed. Even in the context of climate change adaptation (for) agriculture, there's not sufficient resources to cover what the costs are."What's more, she says, "And then it is complicated sometimes to set up the mechanisms to actually get the financing where you need it to go."Creative financingLipper says one possible solution is to link funding for climate change adaptation to other programs."We also look at the potential to link with existing financing mechanisms for agricultural development and overseas development assistance. And work through those in order to reduce the costs of getting this financing in," she says. The global economic crisis is one reason for the lack of financing."Well it doesn't help," says Lipper, "but there's been a long term decrease in investment in agriculture. So, no, it's not just that. It's a lack of recognition of the importance of the sector and a lack of political commitment to really meet the commitments to decrease food insecurity and also now to meet climate change mitigation adaptation."The U.N. estimates the agricultural sector will need to feed 9 billion people by 2050.Lipper says, "First of all, we know that developing country agriculture needs to grow in order to provide the basis for achieving food security – provide food and incomes for people, the rural poor. We also know they'll be facing adaptation. We need funds in there to get more resilient type of production systems. They're facing more variability of climate shocks and there's a need to make the production systems more stable."But the FAO economist says the news isn't all bad."A lot of the same changes that you want for increasing people's incomes, food production and resilience, also give you a mitigation benefit, which means either reducing emissions or increasing carbon sequestration either in soils or in plants. Basically pulling the emissions back and putting it back in the ground. And that has an additional benefit," she says. She adds, "We think that by combining mitigation adaptation financing for these kinds of things is one potential way of dealing with this issue of the investment gap."The FAO also says developing countries should have national policies that encourage private investment in mitigation and adaptation.Futuristic Robot Comes to Life in Virginia LabBeverly Amsler | Blackburg, Virginia06 December 2010Photo: Virginia TechThe ultimate goal of the CHARLI project is to develop full-size, autonomous robots that can take on the dullest, dirtiest and most dangerous jobs that humans now do.The world of tomorrow - at least according to writers of science fiction - includes human-like robots that interact with people and help society in many ways. That future is becoming a reality at Virginia Tech in Blackburg, Virginia.Meeting CHARLI"I can walk like you with two legs. I can see and recognize objects with my two camera eyes. I can track objects and grasp them with my hand. And most of all, I can play a game of soccer," says CHARLI, 1.4-meter-tall robot, made of shiny black metal and white plastic, who can also stretch his arms. His name is an acronym for Cognitive Humanoid Autonomous Robot with Learning Intelligence.Billed as the nation's first full-sized autonomous walking humanoid robot, CHARLI was developed over the past year-and-a-half at Virginia Tech's Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory. A team of students designed and built it for just $20,000.Virginia TechCarbon-fiber tubes and custom-milled aluminum parts give CHARLI a strong but lightweight body.Dennis Hong, who heads RoMeLa, as the lab is known, says that's unheard of in the world of robotics."Because you had a very, very small amount of seed money, $20,000, we had to be really creative," says Hong. "How can you create a full-size, fully autonomous robot in such a short period of time with such a small amount of money? So, instead of using quote, unquote, conventional methods, we had to be innovative and come up with different types of solutions."Off the shelfAlthough CHARLI's circuit boards and some of the power boards are custom-designed, the robot is made up of mostly off-the-shelf parts."For example, most of the shoulder motors you can buy from the internet, these are motors," says Taylor Pesek, a junior engineering student from Ohio. He helped develop and manufacture white covers for CHARLI's torso and arms to make it look more human while also protecting the electronics underneath. "Right now, we're using vacuum-form plastic. It's really easy to manufacture. It's relatively impact resistant and the thicker material that we're using right now also helps resist cracking and abrasion."CHARLI can walk forward, backward, and sideways, and it can vary the length of its stride. But it can only walk on a hard, flat surface. RoMeLa is developing a heavier version, CHARLI-H, that will be able to handle various surfaces.Hong has his eye on Robocop 2050 - a futuristic, international competition that's still 40 years away - which will pit full-sized, autonomous robots against that year's World Cup soccer champions. But he expects more from CHARLI than a win on the soccer field."The ultimate goal of our CHARLI project is to make a full-size autonomous human robots that can eventually help people, help the society," he says.Virginia TechVirginia Tech will soon post instructions for building one of its robots online so people can download, reprogram, upload and improve it.The three DsThe team is focusing its research on what is known as the three Ds: dull, dirty, and dangerous jobs."So those are the areas we want to send robots instead of humans," says Hong, "like in a nuclear reactor. We need to clean up all the nuclear waste, we send in robots. In the war zone, there are roadside bombs, very dangerous. They send in the robots to do the work. In a factory, repetitive tasks. We humans, we don't want to do that, so we send in the robots."December is a big month for RoMeLa. The Virginia Tech lab begins work on a project using robots to fight fires on naval ships. Another grant will allow Hong and his team to put the instructions for building another one of their robots online."You can download instructions," says Hong. "You can build your own if you want to. All the software is there, you can download it, reprogram it, upload, and improve it."The build-your-own-robot program is called DARwIn-OP. That's short for Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence-Open Platform. It makes its debut, along with the legs and feet of the next generation of CHARLI, at the International Humanoid Robotics Conference in Nashville, Tennessee this month.Turning Love of Nature into ActionFaiza Elmasry | Washington, DC06 December 2010Photo: Today, John Adams is chairman of the Open Space Institute, which purchases scenic and natural land in New England to protect it from development. For more than four decades, John Adams has fought to defend the environment and empowered individuals in the US and around the world to join the cause. Adams isco-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council, the nation's first law firm for the environment.Defending the environment, John Adams says, is personal.Taking it personally"When you care about something, like the environment, it does become a passion," he says. "It becomes your life. I grew up on a small-town farm in the Catskill [Mountains] of New York. It was a wonderful place to grow up. I loved it. I learned to love a lot about spending time alone and looking at what was out there."But by the 1960's, he didn't love what he saw happening to the environment."We were a major industrial force with no pollution controls. So if you were in Pittsburg or New York or the factory areas of New Jersey or California, you would be hit with air pollution that had virtually no pollution controls," says Adams. "In New York, we burnt a lot of our garbage right in the buildings - with incinerators in it, of course. Fly ash would come up and it was really all over the city. The rivers were burning because of the pollution that came from the factories. The Hudson River, where I live and grew up, was raw sewage and it smelled because there were no requirements for sewage control."He also woried about the chemical pollution of the waters and the disappearing farmland around the big cities which became suburban sprawl without any planning.Adams turned his love for nature into action, leaving his job with the U.S. Attorney's office in New York in 1970 to help establish the Natural Resources Defense Council, the NRDC. The 33-year-old lawyer became its first director.Professional corps of environmentalists"An older group of lawyers, very wonderful people, both from Yale law school and the bar in New York, came to me and said, 'We should start the first public interest law firm for the environment.' So I agreed to leave the Attorney's office to do that. And with a grant from the Ford Foundation,we started the first public interest law firm to practice law as a charitable corporation, the first in the country."The founding of the NRDC coincided with the strengthening of federal laws protecting the quality of air, water and land.'A Force for Nature,' chronicles the evolution of the Natural Resources Defense Council from a home-grown advocacy group to a 1.3-million member organization with global reach."We were there to work on helping to write [the laws], and then, most important, we were there to help work on making sure the rules and the regulations under those statues provided for protection of the environment, and provided citizens the right to challenge, if they didn't adequately protect the environment. So we helped to create an environmental movement that gave citizens the right to participate."Force of natureIn their new book, "A Force for Nature," John Adams and his wife, Patricia, also an environmental activist, chronicle the evolution of the NRDC from a home-grown advocacy group to a 1.3-million member organization with international reach."The model that we used for building the NRDC, I think, works. It works because, first of all, we wanted to have a collegial place that would attract really, really, bright people who had the dedication to want to really make a difference about the environment. We wanted them to stay and become professional environmentalists. Back in 1970, there were not very many places for a lawyer or a scientist to be an environmentalist unless they stayed at a university. So we thought that that there should be a professional corps of environmentalists."The core philosophy of NRDC's environmental advocacy, Adams says, is to fight on many fronts at once - national and state legislatures, the court system and at the grassroots level. In some places, he says, advocating for environmental issues gives people their first opportunity to have。

Friday was originally supposed to be the opening day protest rally of the G8 meeting in the city. What started out as an organized, permitted rally against economic injustice led by National Nurses United in Chicago’s Daley Plaza ended as a disorganized, unpermitted march by Occupy Wall Street protestors through the financial heart of the city. But in a show of restraint, Chicago police officers stood by as the protestors moved through the streets, stopping traffic along the way.Northwestern University Political Science Professor Ian Hurd says the success of the NATO Summit depends on how well the protestors and police get along.“The dynamic between the police and theprotestors is really subtle and sensitive. And it’s not hard for overreaction on one side or the other to snowball into something that neither side was intending,” Hurd explained.Protests in the Windy City got off to a shaky start when President Barack Obama moved the G8 Summit from his hometown of Chicago to the Camp David Presidential retreat.Jean Ross, Co-President of National Nurses United, says they decided to continue with their rally on what was supposed to be the first day of the Chicago G8 meeting, only to meet resistance from city officials who wanted to deny the group a permit to assemble in Daley Plaza.“If you are afraid of a large group of nurses and one musician with an acoustic guitar, things are in sad state in this country if that’s what scares you. And no we weren’t going to give up and we were going to file for injunctive relief,” said Ross. The city relented, and that acoustic guitar player, former Rage Against the Machine front man Tom Morello, took the stage in front of a crowd that swelledabove 2,000. Morello says the heightened security in Chicago ahead of the NATO Summit sends a signal to world leaders.“The G8 is not welcome in Chicago,” said Morello. “They ran away like little lambs afraid of the reception that Chicago was going to give them. You know who else is not welcome? NATO. They had to call in the National Guard and bus in police from three adjoining states to protect their conference from the people of Chicago.”But Professor Hurd says despite the large force deployed throughout the city, officials are somewhat receptive to the protests.“When the city of Chicago agreed to host the Summit, it knew there would be protest, and I think they were hoping that would add to the media profile to the event,” Hurd added. That profile will increase on the opening day of the NATO Summit during a march expected to attract up to ten thousand protestors.
PUNE, INDIA — In western India, farmers like Popat Pokharkar are among the first in the country to harvest crops that are fortified with key nutrients to combat what is being called the country's hidden hunger.A fourth-generation farmer, Pokharkar, is just getting ready to harvest this year’s pearl millet crop. The grain — a staple in India and in parts of Africa — helps feed his family and livestock at a time when much of his home state of Maharashtra is experiencing a drought.“In the summer season, it’s the best crop when there is limited water and it is more nutritious for the children,” he says, explaining that this particular pearl millet, unlike varieties grown by his forefathers, is enriched with iron.As part of a program run by Washington-based non-governmental organization HarvestPlus, farmers in this village outside the city of Pune are spearheading biofortification efforts to address micronutrient deficiency in a country where one in three children is said to be malnourished.“Villagers and tribal people are malnutritioned, so this is the only way — a cheap way with less cost — to increase their vitamins [and] irons, all these micronutrients that are needed for the health of the body," said Sunil Gandham of Nirmal Seeds, who partnered with HarvestPlus to provide iron-fortified seeds in what he calls the new direction of agriculture.“Programs like this are crucial in a country where more than 60 percent of women are iron deficient or anemic, leading to problems in pregnancy, childbirth and in the growth and development of young children.”Some 20 percent of maternal deaths in India are caused by anemia, a decrease in red blood cells that is often caused by iron and vitamin deficiency.Parwath Pokharkar has seen the effects of anemia in her village.“A lot of women experience heavy bleeding, tiredness, and you cannot sustain, you cannot do work,” she said. She and others welcome efforts to fortify staple crops. In the case of pearl millet or bajra, the grain is made into a flat bread, or roti, which is eaten everyday by families in Maharashtra. The biofortified millet can provide 30 percent of the mean daily iron requirement of women and children.Farmer Dhanesh Pokharkar says the benefit will be widespread.“This will help not only to my family but also the laborers who harvest the millet, they eat the same grain,” he said.HarvestPlus has already introduced Vitamin A-enriched sweet potato and cassava seeds in Africa. Here in India, the organization plans to launch high-zinc rice and wheat in parts of the country later this year.。

过去的两年我们是在极其困难条件下走过来的。
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, friends of the press. Under very tough circumstances, we have covered an eventful cause in the past two years.人民是用坚实的步伐走过了不平坦的道路,这将会在历史上留下印迹。
The Chinese people have gone through an extraordinary journey with solid steps, it will leave an imprint in the annals of history.今后几年,道路依然不平坦,甚至充满荆棘,但是我们应该记住这样一条古训:行百里者半九十。
不可有任何松懈、麻痹和动摇。
The road ahead is not a smooth one. It may be full of twists and turns. But we should always remember this important thing, that is half of the people who have embarked on the 100 mile journey may fall by the wayside, this means we must not slacken our efforts in the slightest, and we must not waiver in our resolve. 但同时我们要坚定信心,华山再高,顶有过路。
解决困难唯一的办法、出路和希望在于我们自己的努力。
We must reinforce our confidence, no matter how high the mountain is, one can always ascend to its top. In the face of the various difficulties, our only answer, only solution and only hope lie in the efforts of ourselves.我深深爱着我的国家,没有一片土地让我这样深情和激动,没有一条河流让我这样沉思和起伏。

NATO has discovered it is not well equipped to train a new national police force for Afghanistan and has turned to the European Union and private contractors for guidance.
***
Afghan police beat their batons against their shields in a drill showing how they would react if a demonstration became violent.
They are the most highly trained of Afghanistan's police forces designed to handle difficult situations.
Italian Carabinieri Brigadier General Carmelo Burgio is helping train the police. He says they are just what Afghanistan needs right now.
"They are the right tools for this kind of job because they are policemen, so they have the mentality of policemen. They have to deal with people, but they have also a sort of military training," says Brigadier General Carmelo Burgio.
The police in Afghanistan are accused of widespread corruption and are said to make money from bribes at checkpoints or at the border. In
November an Afghan policeman killed five British soldiers who were training him. Their commander told a British newspaper recently that police corruption is fueling the insurgency.
But six months ago, NATO set up a new command for training the police, and its officials say they are working to eradicate the culture of corruption and ill-discipline.
Earlier this year, police salaries were increased and many are now being? paid through bank transfers, so no one is able to take a cut of a policeman's pay before it gets into the hands of the employee.
Journalist? Massoud Farivar produces radio programs broadcast across the country. He says what NATO is doing is a start, but there is still a long way to go.
"I think there has been some change, but I do not think there has been significant change in the police," says Farivar. "In general, I would say that there is greater public trust in army than police. The police is still seen as incompetent, corrupt and predatory."
The man in charge of developing the police force, Canadian Major General Mike Ward, says that can be corrected with training.
"If people see them as incompetent, corrupt and predatory, they should also see them as untrained. We can address the untrained part," Major General Ward said.
Perhaps because of the pay raise, recruitment for the force is strong. Attrition rates had been high, likely because police have been threatened and killed by insurgents, especially in the south around Kandahar, the Taliban heartland. Ward says police are targeted because they are working with NATO.
"The police are the ones that are in the fight every day," he added. "They are the ones dying in tremendous numbers, being injured, being wounded. Their families are under great risk and threat."
The police are at the center of NATO's strategy for wresting control from the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, particularly around Kandahar.
A police convoy heading to Kandahar for the offensive was attacked eight
times by insurgents on the road. That they defended themselves well is considered a victory, but NATO and Afghan police officials say there is still a lot of work to do before Afghanistan has a police force it can depend on.。
