Unit 4 Astronomy: the science of the starsI. 阅读理解AAn ambitious project to establish a human colony on Mars has attracted applications from tens of thousands of would-be astronauts, just two weeks after applications opened. The mission, a private venture by the Dutch non-profit organization, Mars One, aims to send a crew to the Red Planet in 2022 — and, due to the physiological change in the human body after a sta y on Mars, there’d be no coming back. That hasn’t deterred people, though, so far, over 200,000 people have applied to become one of Mars’ first immigrants."This is turning out to be the most desired job in history,"says Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One.Day-to-day life on Mars will be no picnic. The organization says that the daily routine on the planet would involve construction work on the colony (installing greenhouses, for example), maintenance of the settlement’s systems and research into Mars’ cl imate and geological history —all in an inhospitable environment with unbreathable air and an average temperature in the planet’s mid-latitudes of around -58 ℉.But Mars One says it is not looking for applicants with specific skills, such as a science degree, which might be useful during an interplanetary posting. Instead, they are looking for people who "have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust."They also want volunteers who are "resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful."Candidates will receive a minimum of eight years training before leaving Earth, the company says.In addition to people skills, successful applicants must be good fundraisers too: Mars One plans to raise much of the mission’s $6 billion estimated cost through a reality TV show following the applicants as they undergo preparations for the one-way trip to Mars.1. According to the passage,we can’t k now about Mars that _______.A. there is no human beings living on it nowB. there is no air on itC. the mid-latitudes’ average temperature is lower than that on the earthD. it will lead to physiological change for human beings living on it2. The applicants will ________ on Mars.A. live in coldB. get a desired jobC. do some researchD. get a large amount of money3. The applicants are not necessary to _______.A. have a science degreeB. have people skillsC. be good fundraisersD. have a deep sense of purpose4. The underlined word "deterred"in Paragraph 2 means _______.A. preventedB. scaredC. explained toD. informedB(2016·天津) When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,"said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to havewarm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working— at any age — is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work."5. What do we know about John?A. He enjoyed his career and marriage.B. He had few childhood playmates.C. He received little love from his family.D. He was envied by others in his childhood.6. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________.A. a description of personal values and social valuesB. an analysis of how work was related to competenceC. an example for parents’ expectations of their childrenD. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men7. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by _______.A. recording the boys’ effort in schoolB. evaluating the men’s mental healthC. comparing different sets of scoresD. measuring the men’s problem solving ability8. What does the underlined word "sharp"probably mean in Paragraph 4?A. Quick to react.B. Having a thin edge.C. Clear and definite.D. sudden and rapid.9. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Competent adults know more about love than work.B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.D. Independence is the key to one’s success.II.语法填空阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the stars李仕才一、阅读理解。

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the Internet to connect with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. That expression means there is no going back. If you prefer boating, you can say that ship has sailed. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers.Study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure.High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some forms of dementia, a brain disease. Dementia is marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and a reduced ability to reason.Let’s introduce something about the study of it.The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use and high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. In a statement she said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life but it shouldn’t consume us. ”For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on “average 25 hours a week. ”Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take “regular breaks from their computers or smartphones” and to do some “kind of physical activity. ”She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.【文章大意】互联网如此有用并且融入我们的生活, 但过度使用它, 会导致多种健康问题。

Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the stars李仕才***阅读理解。

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, “You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided. My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approachedit but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, “The character cannot be developed with ease. Only through experiences of suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our making but many are no fault of our own. While we cannot choose adversity, we can choose our attitude towards it.Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said, “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, and you’ll never use crutches or a stick, and then have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, neverlet them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible.”The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread(思路) is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.【解题导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。

备战2020年高考英语一轮精品复习Unit4 Astronomy:the science of the stars练习

必修三Unit 4 Astronomy: the science of the stars练习Ⅰ.阅读理解AThere are strong arguments on space travel, and below you will find a list of many frequently used arguments.Pros of space travel:—Space travel has inspired many people to continue improving technology such as inventing Velcro and non-stick frying pans.—If you look at the total GDP worldwide, space only accounts for a very small percentage of the total budget.—Better to spend money on our future, than on other projects that would have a much lower potential reward.—If we were to colonize (开拓……成殖民地) another planet, it would reduce the population on Earth, which is already overpopulated. This will result in the survival of our species when our planet can no longer support human life.—Multinational space stations have helped diplomacy (外交) among multiple nations.Cons of space travel:—There is a very large percentage of the earth's oceans we have yet to explore. We should continue exploring the remaining unknown regions of our oceans before continuing to another planet.—The funding for space exploration comes from the tax payers' pockets. Many do not think that they should be forced into paying for something they oppose.—The total contribution from space travel is minimal, when considering the total cost.—We should not be thinking about colonizing the moon, or a planet. It's better to save our existing planet first. If we are to destroy one planet, what is to stop us from repeating the mistakes on another planet.—Not only is the cost of manned space missions high, but space travel can have a serious effect on the human body over an extended period of time. The only way to solve it is by using robots, which reduces the human risk factor, and reduces the overall cost.Overall, most people approve of (赞成) our current exploration methods. In my opinion, these methods should be reviewed to help reduce the cost of launches. I believe the potential of finding resources on other planets will make the cost of several decades of space exploration worthwhile.语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。

Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the stars李仕才一、阅读理解。

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks(挫折) and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls(陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place. This tension between what we feel we can have and what we’re seemingly able to have is the niggling(烦人的)suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it’s easier to just give up. But we’re never meant to let go of part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us — the real us. It’s the part that believes in the life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you’re dropping "you".So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today’s challenges. While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind — or the minds of those close to us — usually says we can’t. That isn’t a reason to stop, it’s just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It’s all about starting simple and doing it now.Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you’ll be on your way.1. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should ________.A. slow down and live a simple lifeB. be careful when we choose to changeC. stick to our dreams under any circumstancesD. be content with what we already have2. What is the key to breaking the old patterns?A. To focus on every detail.B. To decide and take immediate action.C. To listen to those close to us.D. To think twice before we act.3. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?A. Escape from your punishment.B. Realization of your dreams.C. Freedom from your tension.D. Reduction of your expectations.4. What does the author intend to tell us?A. It’s easier than we think to get what we want.B. It’s important to learn to accept sufferings in life.C. It’s impractical to change our way of thinking.D. It’s harder than we expect to follow a new course.【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文。

(2020·合肥市调研性检测)The effects of coffee consumption on health have long been a subject of conflict and uncertainty. Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as it’s harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health.According to a scientific report, mild coffee consumption, three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern, along with other healthful behavior. The report also says that coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it protects against Parkinson’s disease.According to Dr. Donald Hensrud of Mayo Clinic, high consumption of coffee has health risks. Dr. Hensrud mentions the dangers of high coffee consumption for people with a certain illness that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. Some studies said that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California, San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of caffeine, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.Until the scientific community reaches a general agreement on the effects of coffee consumption on human health, it will be up to the individual to decide whether the benefits of drinking coffee are greater than the risks. When informed of these possible health benefits and harm of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, “Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health. Not to mention I need coffee to stay awake.”【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Some studies said that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California, San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of caffeine, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues. When informed of these possible health benefits and harm of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, “Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health.
