百老汇在哪?纽约曼哈顿区的长街百老汇大道(Broadway)为纽约市重要的南北向道路,南起巴特里公园(Battery Park),由南向北纵贯曼哈顿岛。

下⾯我们就来介绍⼀下美国的街名类别,它们的来历,以及地图和路牌上的简写。
美国的⼤⼩城镇往往有⼀条Main Street,也有不少地⽅把这样的⼀条街叫做Market Street,直译过来当然就是“主街”或“市场街”,但是前⼀个不⼤符合汉语对街道命名的习惯,后⼀个则现在那⾥不⼀定能看到像模像样的市场。
其实,右,这两种叫法就再⾃然不过了。
英译汉历来有意译和直译之争,如果坚持意译的话,那么汉语的城关⼤道可能最为贴切。
例如West Main Street可以译为西关⼤街或西⼤街。
⼀般⽽⾔,Street(街)指的是⼀边或两边有⼈⾏道的通道,路⾯铺设了砖⽯或沥青⽔泥,便于车辆通⾏。
在中世纪的西⽅,Road或Way(路、道)仅仅指可以通⾏的道路,只有⼈⼯铺设过的才能够叫Street,所以直到现在它仍然衍⽣出许多其他意思,例如the people in the street指的是普通市民阶层,常⽤在政治领域例如竞选活动的⽀持者等。
其他像man in the street表⽰普通⼈,street people为⽆家可归的流浪汉,⽽street smarts则⽤来形容⼀个⼈喜欢耍⼩Street 在美国城镇的街道路牌上⼀般都简写为ST或St。
纽约市街道路牌WALL ST即华尔街(Jianan)上⾯提到了Road和Way,这两个词也是美国常⽤的街名类别。
Road通常翻译为汉语的路,从词源上来说,它是从riding即骑乘演变⽽来,所以城镇、市郊以及乡村道路都可以⽤,⽽且通常不会⽤作特别狭窄的街名。

• Broadway is a street in Manhattan, New York. The street across the island of Manhattan from the south to north. It is the longest and most bustling street in the world. There are a lot of theaters at both sides of the street, so it is the most important cradle(发源地) of drama (发源地) and musical in the United States. That’s why Broadway became a synonym(代 ( 名词) 名词) of musical.

• "Broadway," the meaning of the word today is not just focused on this street or the theater; people use the word to refer to the essence of American drama. So that an actor’s name appear in a Broadway Theater is the symbol of real success.

• American Theatre Association set up a Tony Award by the name of a famous American actress and director Antoine Bennett Perez in 1946.It is famous in the musical industry just like the Oscar award in film industry. It gives 19 awards to Broadway shows annually, such as the best drama award, best Director Award, best actor and actress awards and so on. Winner Receives only gold medal, no prize money.

• Many Hollywood stars are coming out from the Broadway stage. One example is Julie Andrews, she was found by director because she was the actress in the musical "The Sound of Music”. Then she changed direction to the screen and became the American screen idols in 1960s. • There were a lot of musicians in Broadway; the most famous is Andrew Lloyd Webber. He was born in London and fond of music in childhood. He created many musicals which were handed down from his age(传世之作). He also wrote music for (传世之作) films.
• When a musical has a successful performance in Broadway Theater, it will be famous throughout the United States and throughout the whole Western world. So the musical will be performed in various places. From the same token, the majority of successful musicals in America will move to Broadway Theater, and then it will be advanced to other places by Broadway’s repute.
