FAMILY VALUE

FAMILY VALUEAlong with the development of global economy, intercultural communication is becoming increasingly important in our life. Without communication, there is no cooperation or common development. And for intercultural communication, learning the cultural differences is extraordinary necessary. The reason why we choose to compare the different family values between China and western country is that family value plays an important role in society. It can represent the culture difference in some way.Family values embody in many aspects, such as the proportion of the family in society, the relationship between family members and the way people call the family members, the different family education mode, the different ways to celebrate the festival, the economic problem in the family, etc. I will compare the home education of China to that of America to talk about cultural differences and what we should pay attention to in intercultural communication. The United States is representative in the culture and education among the most developed countries, also it is very different from China. We can learn a lot from a comparison. When talk about family values, a lot of people think China always has a big family, Chinese people attach great importance to the family relations, and regard it as cells of society. In China, we pay more attention to the way we call family members, or a pecking order. I have never called the elder’s names, even though my sister is one years older than me, not to mention my parents or grandparents. It will surely make me uncomfortable. Chinese need to perform their obligations to their parents and their parents also have strong dependent on them. When I was a kid, I really don't like living in relative's house without being accompanied by parents. Now I am a college student, I am still afraid of independence. Even imagining myself into middle age, I hope to live with my parents. In China, the relationship between the elder and the younger generation is close. From what we find above, we can easily reach a conclusion that the relationship between family members is complex in China. Though parents and children rely on each other much, children never call their parents’ names. Children respect their parents orsometimes are afraid of them. Such kind of education mode is easy to make the younger generation be cautious and careful.Chinese parents always worry about the children too much, and never let children grow without their company, which makes the Chinese lack of independence. I finally have my own room until junior high school. My mother hopes I will talk to her about anything. In my days, privacy seems to belong to adults only. When I chat with a foreign teacher, it makes him puzzled that I often refer to "my mother said" He does not understand, what he insists is that the questions is for me but not my mum.In china few parents will let their children make money outside when they are young, and grandparents will strongly object to it. My first pay came two years ago. I finally learned how difficult to make money.I check it on the website that the United States belongs to the core family values. The united state provides it is legal obligation for parents to bring up the children, but provides that no children must support their parents. If old parents lost self-care ability, they tend to live in the nursing home.In the United States, children will regard parents as their friends, and not be afraid of them. Husband and children will share housework. In most cases, the children enjoy privacy in their bedroom. They early take the responsibility of money management. Parents often let children make their own decisions. Children choose to wear what kind of clothes or buy what kind of toys. American home education is to cultivate rich pioneering spirit and the competition ability. The child can be an independent one. Parents think subjective initiative is really necessary.American parents pay attention to helping children build clear economic concept and economic independent consciousness, they teach children how to use money or to save it, how to make money. What is really different is that parents often use money to stimulate the competition between children. One of my French friends thinks it is very normal for young people to make his or her own money.By comparing China and United state on home education, I don’t think we can point which one is better. There are many factors influence family values, such as the social economy, social education background and so on. We can only say that his family value issuitable for his culture. Different home education modes embody different cultures. In a word, China is passive and the United state is more individual.Maybe comparing Chinese and American family values is not enough to represent all cultural differences, but at least we can see how important it is to understand that the cultural difference is a wide range of issue, and to recognize the different ways of thinking. It may be helpful in the future when we are communicating with foreigners and avoiding the unnecessary misunderstanding. Through the comparison, while not comprehensive, we can clearly learn a lot.Information from 。

• Jiang Haochen, 17, Liaoning • I always remember that any sort of waste is not allowed in our family. I have to finish all the food in my bowl and I shouldn’t spend too much money on meaningless stuff, like game cards. I’m really thankful for the lessons that my father has taught me . They have shaped my personality. • Li Dongdong, 17, Shanxi • Parents are absolute authority in most families, but my parents respect me a lot. They let me think and act independently all the time. They support me to speak out about my ideas and to choose what I really like as my hobbies. They never force me to do anything. It’s great!
• How to Help Children With Manners
• Helping children with manners is important for parents, teachers and other adults who deal with children. The most important element of manners is consideration of others because it is thinking about the way another person feels. Using common sense is another important element in teaching manners -- treating other people the way you would like to be treated. Being rude, for example, is considered to be bad manners because it hurts other people's feelings. Remember that adults often teach children by example.

Family values are the moral and ethical principles that guide the behavior and decision-making within a family unit. They are the beliefs, traditions, and customs that shape the way a family interacts and functions. In today's fast-paced and ever-changing world, it is important to establish strong family values to provide a sense of stability and unity within the family. This article will explore the significance of family values and how they contribute to the overall well-being of individuals and society.First and foremost, family values play a crucial role in shaping the character and personality of individuals. From a young age, children learn important values such as honesty, respect, and responsibility from their family. These values serve as a foundation for their behavior and interactions with others. For example, a child who grows up in a family that values honesty is more likely to develop a strong sense of integrity and truthfulness. This, in turn, will positively influence their relationships and interactions with others throughout their lives.Furthermore, family values provide a sense of identity and belonging. When individuals have a clear understanding of their family's values and traditions, they feel connected to their roots and have a sense of belonging. This sense of belonging fosters a strong support system within the family, where members can rely on each other during difficult times. For instance, a family that values loyalty and support will come together and provide emotional and practical support to a member going through a challenging situation, such as a job loss or a health issue. In addition, family values contribute to the overall well-being and happiness of individuals. When families prioritize values such as love, compassion, and empathy, they create a nurturing and supportive environment. They are also more likely to develop healthy relationships and have successful careers. Moreover, family values have a significant impact on society as a whole. Strong family values promote social cohesion and harmony. When families prioritize values such as tolerance, respect for diversity, and social responsibility, they raise individuals who are more accepting and inclusive. These individuals then contribute positively to their communities and work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society. Family values also serve as a counterbalance to negative influences from the outside world, such as peer pressure and societal norms that may contradict the family's values. In conclusion, family values are essential for the well-being and development of individuals and society. List of Chinese Family ValuesBy Amie Taylor, eHow ContributorChinese traditions date back thousands of years. In China, the interest of the family outweighs the interest of the individual, and decisions are made based on how they impact the group first and foremost. Family in China means not only mom, dad and kids. It includes all manner of extended family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws. As a result, many of the values of Chinese culture revolve around family.Commitment to MarriageMarriage has always played an important part in China's culture. Marriage was so important that arranged marriages were typical for centuries. Such marriages were expected to endure for a lifetime. This important decision was not left to the young people, but was made by their elders. While that has changed today, marriage is still considered the desired state and the basis of the family. Even now, a couple typically requests the approval of their parents before marriage as a sign of respect for the knowledge and experience of their elders.Respect for EldersUnlike many western cultures that value youth, the Chinese revere their elders and respect the knowledge that is gained with age and experience. Chinese families typically take care of their aging family members, rather than leaving them to fend for themselves. Recent changes in society, however, have prompted the possibility of a law requiring children to visit and care for their parents in cases where the children fail to uphold a duty to support their parents.Respect for the DeadAncestor worship is important within the Chinese family. The Chinese believe that the spirits of deceased family members continue to watch over them and influence the lives of those they've left behind. Remaining family members often create an altar in the home with candles, a photo of the relative and several items of offering. Articles the deceased may need in the great beyond are placed on the altar. Grooming items, favorite foods and money are commonly found on altars.Importance of EducationChinese families place a great value on education and Chinese children are expected to assume the same attitude without question. Students of both sexes spend considerable time studying and striving to excel in the subjects they take in school. Television, computer games, sports and playtime are often given low or no priority in favor of academic pursuits. Intense pressure and a competitive atmosphere prevail, as parents insist on nothing short of academic excellence in the hope of securing a good future for their children.Chinese Marriage and Chinese Marriage TraditionsIn ancient China, a man could have as many concubines as possible after the first wife. It was possible that the youngest concubine would be a teenager while the husband could be an ancient old man. Poor families sold their young daughters to rich families just because they could get some money from the rich family and also get rid of a useless female in the family.Since 1950, the Chinese government has promulgated a law which stated that one man can only get married with one woman. It offends the law for anyone who has more than one wife.In the past, parents arranged marriages were very common. Usually young people would have their spouse decided by their parents. Sometimes young people could only have the first look of their spouse at their wedding. It was also common that sometimes an arranged marriage could be organized even before the child was born as long as parents from both families agreed. In modern days, things have changed quite a lot. Free love prevails and lovers can choose to get married with whoever they love. Of course, in order to show their respect to their parents, formal agreement has still to be obtained prior to any proper marriage procedure.Even more modern, matchmakers businesses are all thriving just because sometimes people find it a bit hard to find their true love. Before getting marriedBefore getting married, young people have to pay a formal visit to each other's parents. When visiting the girl's parents, the boy has to bring with him the betrothal gifts in order to show sincerity. When the gifts are received, then both the boy and the girl are engaged. When the girl visits the boy's parents, the parents have to prepare a formal gift for the future daughter-in-law.In China, usually the newly wedded couple will move to live with the boy's family. Sometimes it is not surprising to see that they will live with the girl's family. However, in these modern days, young couples would prefer to live alone without the parents if they can afford to pay for a new flat or house. One of the wedding procedure is that the bride has to prepare a dowry to be brought to the bridegroom's family on the wedding day. A dowry is things bought by the bride's family, which includes blackest, clothes, accessories, daily necessities and etc. What comes next is to choose a good day to hold the wedding. It is very important in the Chinese culture. A wedding, being such an important day in a person's life, has to be held on a day which symbolizes goodness. People will choose the best day based on the Chinese Lunar calendar, or on any festival days. The wedding ceremonyA formal Chinese wedding requires thebridegroom to pick up the bride at thebride's home after respectfully greetedthe parents-in-law to be. Thecouple-to-be will then go to thebridegroom's home, where the bride willgreet her parents-in-law to be, or to thebanquet location. If they choose to go tothe bridegroom's home, the youngcouple will have to greet theparents-in-law to be with a cup of tea each and the parents will return the daughter-in-law to be with a red packet of money inside. Similar to the western culture, the bride and bridegroom will be accompanied by bridesmaids and best men and they are usually still non-married.One very important procedure is the banquet. All relatives and friends will be invited and they will wish the new couple with all the best. At the banquet, the newly wed has to drink half glass of wine for a pair of glasses linked by a ribbon. After that the newly wed has to cross-hand and drink the other half of the wine. It is believed that after this ceremony the newly wed will love each other more dearly. In some parts of China, the fish served in the banquet should not be eaten totally. The head, tail and the whole skeleton of the fish should be left untouched so as to symbolize a good start and end of a marriage. After the banquet, friends of the new couple will usually continue the night by deliberately disturbing the new couple with a few games. Games will include different quests for some difficult performances or questions. Unfortunately to the newly wed that these games usually last till very late in the night! However in the modern days, many young people try to skip most of these rituals or ceremonies. They do that either because they think that new generations should not be confined by these old traditions, or some do so just because of economical reasons of trying not to spend as much money as possible.Family and HouseholdSource: U.S. Library of Congress/china/51.htmIn past Chinese society, the family provided every individual's support, livelihood, and long-term security. Today the state guarantees such security to those with no families to provide for them, and families and work units share long-term responsibility for the individual. The role of families has changed, but they remain important, especially in the countryside. Family members are bound, in law and custom, to support their aged or disabled members. The state, acting through work units, provides support and benefits only when families cannot. Households routinely pool income, and any individual's standard of living depends on the number of household wage earners and the number of dependents. In both cities and villages, the highest incomes usually are earned by households with several wage earners, such as unmarried adult sons or daughters. In late traditional society, family size and structural complexity varied directly with class. Rural landlords and government officials had the largest families, poor peasants the smallest. The poorest segment of the population, landless laborers, could not afford to marry and start families. The need to provide for old age and the general association between the numbers of sons surviving to adulthood and long-term family success motivated individuals to create various nonstandard family forms. Couples who produced no sons, or no children at all, adopted or purchased infants outright. Families with daughters but no sons tried to find men willing to marry their daughters and move into their families, abandoning their original families and sometimes even their original surnames. Families with daughters but no property to attract a son-in-law were sometimes forced to sell their daughters as concubines or prostitutes. The variation in family size and complexity was the result of variation in class position and of the dual role of the household as both family and economic enterprise. In contemporary society, rural families no longer own land or pass it down to the next generation. They may, however, own and transmit houses. Rural families pay medical expenses and school fees for their children. Under the people's commune system in force from 1958 to 1982, the income of a peasant family depended directly on the number of laborers it contributed to the collective fields. This, combined with concern over the level of support for the aged or disabled provided by the collective unit, encouraged peasants to have many sons. Under the agricultural reforms that began in the late 1970s, households took on an increased and more responsible economic role. The labor of family members is still the primary determinant of income. But rural economic growth and commercialization increasingly have rewarded managerial and technical skills and have made unskilled farm labor less desirable. As long as this economic trend continues in the countryside in the late 1980s, peasant families are likely to opt for fewer but better educated children. The consequence of the general changes in China's economy and the greater separation of families and economic enterprises has been a greater standardization of family forms since 1950. In 1987 most families approximated the middle peasant (a peasant owning some land) norm of the past. Such a family consisted of five or six people and was based on marriage between an adult son and an adult woman who moved into her husband's family. The variant family forms--either the very large and complex or those based on minor, nonstandard forms of marriage--were muchless common. The state had outlawed concubinage, child betrothal, and the sale of infants or females, all of which were formerly practiced, though not common. Increased life expectancy meant that a greater proportion of infants survived to adulthood and that more adults lived into their sixties or seventies. More rural families were able to achieve the traditional goal of a three-generation family in the 1980s. There were fewer orphans and young or middle-aged widows or widowers. Far fewer men were forced to retain lifelong single status. Divorce, although possible, was rare, and families were stable, on-going units.A number of traditional attitudes toward the family have survived without being questioned. It is taken for granted that everyone should marry, and marriage remains part of the definition of normal adult status. Marriage is expected to be permanent. That marriage requires a woman to move into her husband's family and to become a daughter-in-law as well as a wife is still largely accepted. The norm of patrilineal descent and the assumption that it is sons who bear the primary responsibility for their aged parents remain. The party and government have devoted great effort to controlling the number of births and have attempted to limit the number of children per couple. But the authorities have not attempted to control population growth by suggesting that some people should not marry at all.In the past, kinship principles were extended beyond the domestic group and were used to form large-scale groups, such as lineages. Lineages were quite distinct from families; they were essentially corporate economic-political groups. They controlled land and, in some areas of China, dominated whole villages and sets of villages and held title to most of the farmland. Like most other late traditional associations, lineages were dominated by wealthy and educated elites. Ordinary peasants paid as much of their crop to their lineage group as they might have to a landlord. The Communists denounced these organizations as feudal systems by means of which landlords exploited others. The lineages were suppressed in the early 1950s and their land confiscated and redistributed in the land reform. Communal worship of distant lineage ancestors lost much of its justification with the dissolution of the lineage estate and was easily suppressed over the next several years. Domestic ancestor worship, in which members of a single family worshiped and memorialized their immediate ancestors, continued at least until 1966 and 1967, in the early stages of the Cultural Revolution, when Red Guards destroyed altars and ancestral tablets. In 1987 the party was still condemning ancestor worship as superstitious but had made little effort to end it.。

my-view-on-family-values-in-China-and-America

my-view-on-family-values-in-China-and-AmericaMy View on Family Values in China and AmericakathleenFamily is the most fundamental unit of society. And to a large extent, family values are the most direct reflection of social values. As to us all, Chinese culture is the representation of the orient civilization, while American culture is kind of mixture of western civilizations. Difference between the two cultures brings the great differences on family values. After studying and reading materials, I suppose that the main differences are concerning ethic, education and marriage. As to ethic, I reckon that Chinese family put great emphasis on emotion and family hierarchy , while Americans prefer democracy and freedom. Emotion is the symbol of the Chinese family. It’s the connection of the whole memebers, leading them to care about the relatives and make contributions to the family. The desire of going back home makes up the Chinese life. There are two most famous phenomenons. One is the Spring Festival travel, which represents the traditional family value of gatheringt. And the other is visiting family member s’ graves and choosing to be buried in one’s hometown. Another characteristic of chinese family is the hierarchy that all members naturaly observe. The generations with high status are respected and carefully looked after during their old age. And they unconditionally spend large amounts of time and money to make their children and grandchildren grow up happily and live a high quality life. But things are quite different in the American family. They believe all the efforts should be paid back, including love. So the child must do something for their parents once he needs money fromhis parents. Besides, Americans stress on democracy, justice and reason, which makes them have a voice in the family rather than obeying the parents’words no matter whether the wo rds are right. They don’t regard the family connection and blood relatives as that important. As to education, Chinese parents make arrangements for chidren while American parents let children make choices. Education is a part of culture. Being affected by Confuciansm, parents treat the education of children as the future of themselives, even related to the interest of the whole family. They usually forget to consider the children’s willings, and make ‘pefect’plans. On the contrary, American parents try to cultivate the abilities of chasing for self interest, such as the ability of choosing on one’s own and the ability of being responsible for oneself, which I think are the most important things a child should learn for his better future. They don’t stress too much on the grades, and support children to develop their interests, for example Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to develop his computer career, which may not be allowed in a Chinese family. However, with the society development and globalization, more and more Chinese family realize the significance of quality education, and begin to transform the relationship between parents and children. As to marriage, the marriage relationship is one of the most vital things during one’s life in traditional Chines e values, while Americans emphasize on equality as well as independence and don’t take it much seriously. In Chinese society, marriage is not just one’s thing, but related to the couple’s families, morality, reputation as well as responsibility. The couple aim to bulid a harmonious union family, in some time requring them toabandon their own willings. During a Chinese family, members learn to tolerate, to forgive, to adapt to others, which can be seen as a huge burden, making modern young people frightened to marry somebody. Also, the cost of a marriage is beyond a family’s tolerance. Because of the serious imbalance of the sex ratio, the male family must have a well economic condition to attract the female family. But things differ in the US. American couple enjoy independence, leaving each other enough private room and never intervening. They stres on emotional communication to make their love fresh and stable, and they undertake the household and education of children together. Americans regard marriage as their own thing and no relation with morality. So once there is the other man or woman stepping into their marriage, they will think mistakes have appeared in the marriage and give each other a chance to choose, rather than fight or quarrel like Chinese couples. Owing to the individualism, Americans’s divorce rate is the highest all over the world.Above all, we can learn of the obvious differences family values between China and America. Chinese advocate collectivism while Americans adore individualism. And that’s the fundamental reason of the differences. We can’t judge which value is the better, but we can learn from the two’s advantages to build a more modern and harmonious family.。

写三个关于家庭价值观的英语作文Title: Three Family ValuesFamily values play an important role in shaping individuals and society as a whole. In this essay, I will discuss three important family values that contribute to a strong and harmonious family unit.First and foremost, respect is a fundamental family value that is essential for maintaining healthy relationships within a family. Respecting one another's opinions, feelings, and boundaries is crucial for fostering a sense of trust and understanding among family members. By showing respect towards each other, family members can create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and appreciated. This value of respect also extends to other people outside the family, teaching individuals to treat others with kindness and consideration.Another important family value is communication. Effective communication is key for resolving conflicts, expressing emotions, and building strong connections within a family. By openly discussing issues, sharing thoughts and feelings, and listening attentively to one another, family members can build trust and deepen their relationships. Good communication skillsalso help family members to understand each other better, create a sense of unity, and work together towards common goals. Moreover, communication within the family can help individuals to develop important life skills such asproblem-solving and conflict resolution.Lastly, unconditional love is a core family value that forms the foundation of a strong family unit. Unconditional love means accepting and supporting each other through thick and thin, regardless of mistakes or imperfections. This unwavering love creates a sense of security and belonging within the family, nurturing emotional well-being and resilience in individuals. By demonstrating love and care towards one another, family members can create a positive and nurturing environment where everyone feels safe and valued. Unconditional love also helps to instill important values such as empathy, compassion, and forgiveness, shaping individuals into kind and compassionate human beings. In conclusion, respect, communication, and unconditional love are three essential family values that contribute to a strong and harmonious family unit. By practicing these values in everyday interactions, family members can build healthy relationships, foster understanding and trust, and create asupportive and loving environment for everyone. Embracing these values can not only strengthen the family bond but also contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society as a whole.。
