AHave you ever heard of an old saying? Intelligence is a born ability while goodness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after a ll. Choice can be hard.I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, an d I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t and I wasn’t sure what to expect.MacKenzie told me I should go for it.As a young boy,I’d been a garage inventor.I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me,and finally said,“That sounds like a really goodidea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t alr eady have a good job.”That logic made some sense to me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision.Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally,I decided I had to give it a shot.I didn’t think I’d r egret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration,I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.21.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A. His dream of being an inventor.B. The support of his wife.C. The greatly increasing usage of the Internet.D. Millions of exciting titles.22. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?A. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.B. He would be very excited if he tried it out.C. H e would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.D. The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him.23. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Cleverness and KindnessB. The Starting of AmazonC. Following My PassionD. We Are What We Choose24. We can know from the passage that_______.A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the authorB. the author wanted someone else to try the ideaC. the author might not regret if he failed the ideaD. the author might go back to his boss if he failedBWith the development of modern society, human beings are increasingly invading wild animals’ habitat as well as the wild plants’. Nearly a third of the world’s cacti (仙人掌) are facing the threat of extinction, according to a shocking global assessment of the effects.Cacti are an important provider of food and water to desert wildlife ranging from wolves and deer to tortoises, bats and birds, and these fauna spread the plants’seeds in return. But the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s first worldwide health check of the plants says that they are coming under huge pressure from human activities such as land use changes, commercial and residential developments and shrimp farming. But the paper said the driver of cacti species extinction was the “uncontrolled collection of live plants and private decorating collections, and annual agriculture.”The findings were described as “disturbing” by Inger Anderson, the IUCN’s director-general. “They confirm that the scale of the illegal wildlife trade, including the trade in plants is much greater than we had previously thought, and that wildlife illegal trade concerns many more species than the elephants which tend to receive global attention.”Cacti are almost always delicious but unlike most others, they store water in their stems alone, enabling them to survive extreme draughts. The plants can be as small as one centimeter in diameter and grow above 19 meters in height. Well over half of the species are used by humans for display decoration, food or medicine. Almost 1,500 types of cacti were surveyed by the IUCN specialists over a five-year period, mostly in America.Dealing with the illegal trade is a hard task as they can be hidden in suitcases or even socks. While countries such as Peru have made progress in blocking the illegal trade, the IUCN is calling for more strictly carrying out the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) in the “hotspots’’ of Uruguay, Brazil and Chile. Mexico has made advances but still has work to do, according to Goettsch.25. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?A. What causes cacti species extinctionB. What gives people pressureC. What IUCN has foundD. What farmers have planted26. In Inger Anderson’s opinion, _____________.。

From its very beginning, A Bite of China is not just a documentary about food. "The scenes of digging for bamboo shoots, hanging hams, catching fish using a net, opening a steamer filled with white steamed buns, and pulling wheat dough into thin strands for noodles move us to tears. What a lovely China!" a viewer said.A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relations between people and food and between people and society from the perspective of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every grain comes from hard and laborious toil. Some people see patriotism in the documentary, and some considerit a great cultural export. How did this documentary achieve a tremendous influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time?"It is not empty propaganda about China's splendid food culture. Instead, it shows the techniques usedin making food and their production process as well as the lives of ordinary people, thus striking a chord with the audience," an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be attributedto sincerity and reality. It is said sarcastically that Americans like to shoot sci-fi films because they have no history, while Chinese like to shoot time-travel dramas to the past because they have no future. The correctness ofthis arbitrary conclusion is debatable, but it has raised a thought-provoking question. Works that are created behind closed doors and fail to reflect reality or that only focus on the luxury lives of a few people and ignore ordinary people's desire for ample food and clothing will not touch people's hearts. "We made this documentary with our respect and love for food," said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincereis the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convinced. Sincerity is the "secret"for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.16. A Bite of China has all the following emotional influences EXCEPT _______.A. reminding people of their memories about familyB. making people treasure every gainC. arousing people’s patriotism towards their countryD. calling on people to export their culture17. Which of the following statements about A Bite of China is TRUE according to the passage?A. It only focuses on the luxury lives of a few people in China.B. It stresses the emotions of ordinary Chinese people in its shooting.C. It has been considered a “week player” on T V since it was produced.D. It provides a unique view of Chinese from the perspective of humanity.18. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Sincerity and reality, Great SuccessB. If you’re married, you’re going to lie to your wife/ husband in one out of every 10 communications. If you’re unmarried, that number drops to three. But look, if at some point you got lied to, it’s because you agreed to get lied to. Truth about lying: lying’s a cooperative act. Not all lies are harm ful. Sometimes we’re willing to lie for the sake of social dignity, maybe to keep a private secret.Lying is complex. It’s woven into the fabric of our daily and business lives. We’re deeply disturbed by the truth. We explain it, sometimes for very good r easons, other times just because we don’t understand the gaps between ideals and realities in our lives. We’re against lying, but secretly we’re for it in ways that our society has practiced for centuries and centuries. It’s as old as breathing. It’s part of our culture and history. Think the stories from Dante, Shakespeare, the Bible, and News of the World.Lying has great value to the evolution of human being. Researchers have long known that the more intelligent the species, the more likely it is to lie. We human like to become leaders. It starts really early. How early? Well, babies will pretend to cry, pause, wait to see who’s coming and then go right back to crying. One-year-olds learn hiding truth. Two-year-olds bluff (虚张声势). Five-year-olds lie outright and try to control via flattery (讨好). Nine-year-olds, masters of covering up. By the time you enter college, you’re going to lie to your mom in one out of every five interactions. By the time we enter this work world to b e breadwinners, we’ve entered a world that is just full of fake digital friends, business media, identity thieves, world-class cheats, ——in short, a post-truth society. What do you do? Well there are steps we can take to guide our way through the bushes. Trained lie spotters(监视人) get to the truth 90% of the time. The rest of us, we’re only 54% accurate. Why is it so easy tolearn? There are clever liars and stupid liars. There’re no real original liars. We all make the same mistakes. We all use the same techniques.23. From Para.1 we learn that lying is very ________.A. harmfulB. easyC. interestingD. common24. According to the passage, a lie works when _________.A. the liar’s words are sweet enoughB. it is given to a complete strangerC. someone gives the liar cooperationD. we are willing to lie for the dignity25. Lying is complex because ________.A. it is practiced by clever onesB. people are for it as well as against itC. ancient stories are full of liesD. it is the whole part of great culture26. What will the writer most likely talk about if he continues the passage?A. How to become clever liars.B. How to avoid stupid lies.C. How to get through the bushes.D. How to tell truth from lies.DDepression can be a devastating illness, plaguing millions of people worldwide with feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and fatigue. Despite numerous antidepressant drugs, as many as a third of patients don’t respond to medication. This has forced doctors to be more creative in finding different treatments for the condition. In the past two decades, researchers have tied depression to a seemingly unrelated condition: inflammation(炎症), the body’s natural response to stress. It could rise from injury or inflection, or even emotional issues like an unhappy marriage or problems at work. Some amount of inflammation is generally beneficial, as it increases production of cytokines (细胞因子),proteins that help us heal and protect us from the effects of overwork. But excessive cytokine levels, and the inflammation they bring on, could come at a cost. A number of studies suggest that high levels of cytokines could contribute to depression.Cytokines can reach the brain several ways: directly through the blood-brain barrier or indirectly by binding to nerve fibers elsewhere, which send signals to the brain to produce the inflammation molecules. In the brain, cytokines can disturb the production and release of several important signaling chemicals, including serotonin, dopamine and glutamate, which help control emotion, appetite, sleep, learning and memory. It’s though that a lack of serotonin activity in the brain causes depression; most antidepressants increase the activity. But cytokines also have been shown to activate stress hormone signaling in the brain, which may also serve to develop depression. With all the evidence implicating inflammation in depression, doctors have been anxious to test anti-inflammatory drugs as a potential treatment. Four small students published between 2006 and 2012 by research groups in Europe and Iran found that adults diagnosed with depression who took aspirin or another anti-inflammatory drug called Celecoxib, along with an antidepressant, got more relief from feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt and fatigue compared with those taking an antidepressant alone. However, Andrew Miller, a professor of psychiatry at Emory University, thought something was amiss in these small, limited studies. None of them looked at whether the participants had to have high levels of cytokines before into the trap of viewing inflammatory drugs. “Unfortunately, much of the field has fallen into the trap of viewing inflammation as the be-all, end-all,” Miller says. He and his colleagues wanted to see whether the effect of these drugs was limited to the depression patients with high cytokinelevels, or if it helped all people diagnosed with depression.27. Which of the following illustrated how depression is developed?A. infection -→inflammation -→cytokine -→depressionB. stress-→overwork-→inflammation -→depressionC. cytokine-→stress -→ infection-→depressionD. inflammation -→ infection-→stress-→depression28. We can infer from the passage that ______.A. depression will be an incurable disease for a long timeB. we have a long way to go before depression can be satisfying treatedC. people who are hard –working are more subject to depressionD. aspirin can effectively help relieve people of many emotional problems29. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and the older boys reciting L atin verbs made him sleepy. Jonathan had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new!He looked up at the schoolmaster’s high desk in the front of th e room. The new teacher was from . Jonathan’s father had b een impressed with him. The boys had already had several ot her teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire Jonathan. S o far, there was nothing to show that this one was special , th ough he’d only been there two days.“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster sa id. “We’ll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, d ig for grubs and beetles ( 幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells”Jonathan watched the teacher surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever used the schoolyard itself for a cla ssroom. “What next ?” he thought. He didn’t have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies a nd dragonflies himself.Jonathan and his friends liked this new way of learning.“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their bri ghtness and the patterns they make. These patterns have na mes from Greek mythology(神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will lea rn about the ancient stories on them.”“How is the new schoolmaster ?” asked Jonathan’s father that evening, when Jonathan announced he was going out to look at the sky.“He’s different from any other schoolmaster we’ve had,” Jonat han admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schooly ard as a classroom!”“So Mr. John Adams and his new ways make school useful toyou after all,” joked Jonathan’s father.“I believe he has,” said Jonathan. “I know I won’t forget the les sons he has taught us!”1. When you are pressed for time on a business trip, noth ing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a spee dier check-in process.1. Yotel New YorkThe self-service kiosks at this high-tech hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport. The re are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a ro botic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down an d store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head toa series of meetings.2.Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is roll ing out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the hotel. (I’ve teste d the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the ba sic idea: you download the iphone or Android app. The night b efore, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.3. Hyatt RegencyI happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your cred it card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with an ipad and asks fo r an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.4. Radisson: LaCrosseThe Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster, at a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in , you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by emailor text. When you get to the kiosk, you scan the barcode to ge t your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. Yo u can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, an d as well.5.Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to chec k in?A. Yotel New York and .B. and Radisson: LaCrosse.C. . and Hyatt Regency .D. Hyatt Regency and Radisson: LaCrosse.6.Which hotel will send you a receipt by email?A. Yotel New York.B. .C. Radisson: LaCrosse.D. Hyatt Regency .7.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. At Yotel New York, a robot will help you with all the check-in process.B. With its check-in app, you may enter your room in Marriott without a key. C. The barcode you receive from Radisson contributes to the fast check-in.D. Hyatt Regency is close to an airport terminal.CYou may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous s ystems would not operate. Our hearts would not beat. But do not think rubbing salt into a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not heal the wound. “To rub salt into a wound” is an idiom that means to purposefully make a bad sit uation worse.Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the a nimals they killed. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were luc ky. Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people use d salt as a method of payment in many parts of the ancient w orld. The word “salary” comes from the word “salt”.Salt also played an important part in population movement an d world exploration. Explorers understood that if they could ke ep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they use d salt to preserve food and explore the world.Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for-pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “worth one's salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The expressions de scribe a person of value.A person might also be called “salt of the earth”. That descript ion means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. However, when you say “I think we should take what he said with a grai n of salt”you mean you accept it but maintain a degree of dou bt about its truth.8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Salt plays an important part in our life.B. Salt mak es food tasty.C. Salt is considered to be part of our muscles.D. Salt is sure to damage nervous systems.9. A beggar’s bread was stolen last night, which means______ ___.A. salt of the earthB. rubbing salt in a woundC. a diet low in saltD. worth his salt10. If you describe a person as a great help, you mean______ ___ .A. he rubs salt in a woundB. he is often taken as a grain of saltC. he often uses salt to preserve meatD. he is worth his weight in salt11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Salt Is More Than a Four-letter Word.B. Salt Is a Basic Element in Cooking.C. Salt Is a Word with a Long History.D. Salt Is Popular with Different People.DA new study has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce depression. The study fou nd that this mind and body combination, done twice a week fo r only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of stude nts by 40 percent.“We are excited by the findings because we saw such a me aningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students,” said lead author Dr. Brandon Alderman.“It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways hav e been looked at together for dealing with depression.”Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive e ffect on combating depression. Alderman and Dr. Tracey Shor s discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the stud y began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation follo wed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if thei r thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus—part of the brain involved in memory and learning—says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen spo rt exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive. The idea for the human intervention(干预)came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main go al of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can lea rn to recover from stressful life events.By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people wh o are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelm ing recollection of memories from the past, Shors says.“We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health.” said Alderman. “The good news is that this intervention can be p racticed by anyone at any time and at no cost.”12. What made the research so different?A. Adopting a way of meaningful talk.B. Combining the two behavioral ways to treat depression.C. Treating depression with special medicine.D. Comparing the depressed with the non-depressed.13. The underlined word “combating” in Paragraph 3 can be r eplaced by ______.A. fightingB. identifyingC. distingui shingD. examining14. What did the participants do in the research?A. They did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking.B. They thought quietly and then took exercise.C. They took exercise longer than they thought.D. They too k exercise while thinking quietly.15. What is Shors’ main purpose of her studies?A. To find out certain brain cells of humans.B. To study the production of new brain cells.C. To offer people a new method to treat stress.D. To decid e the links between stress and exercise.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共1 0分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

You should decide on the best choice.AGiven its subject matter and time slot, A Bite of China was initially considered a "weak player" on TV. "Man is what he eats," said Ludwig Feuerbach. We say, “Nice song.” “Honey, you don’t look fat in that, no.” But another study showed that strangers lied three times within the first 10 minutes of meeting each other. We lie more to strangers than we lie to coworkers. Men lie eight times more about themselves than they do other people. Women lie more to protect other people. If you’re married, you’re going to lie to your wife/ husband in one out of every 10 communications. If you’re unmarried, that number drops to three. But look, if at some point you got lied to, it’s because you agreed to get lied to. Truth about lying: lying’s a cooperative act. Not all lies are harmf ul. Sometimes we’re willing to lie for the sake of social dignity, maybe to keep a private secret.Lying is complex. It’s woven into the fabric of our daily and business lives. We’re deeply disturbed by the truth. We explain it, sometimes for very good re asons, other times just because we don’t understand the gaps between ideals and realities in our lives. Why is it so easy to learn? There are clever liars and stupid liars. There’re no real original liars. We all make the samemistakes. He and his colleagues wanted to see whether the effect of these drugs was limited to the depression patients with high cytokine levels, or if it helped all people diagnosed with depression.27. On September 10, the center hosted a unique class of star musicians: kids and teens. The young players are part of the World Peace Orchestra, or WPO. The group held its first Music for Peace concert inNew York City, with 134 students from more than 60 countries taking part. Musicians were chosen from all over the world. The World Peace Orchestra began in 2013. The nonprofit group brings kids together using the common language of music. To be considered for the orchestra, students first had to be recommended by their teachers and then audition online for a group of judges. Once chosen, professional musicians and teachers then worked with the players to improve their skills. Some of the young musicians played classical instruments, such as violins and flutes. Others played instruments unique to their home country. For example, Amold Mugo, 16, fromKenya, played an instrument called the djembe. The drum is originally fromWest Africa. Mugo said he was shocked when he learned he was chosen for the orchestra. “I can’t express how I felt. I was rolling on the floor. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.Adomas Hendrixson, 13, fromLithuania, played piano for the WPO. Before theNew York Cityperformance, Hendrixson talked about what he hoped to take away from the event. “Fun and joy-- people smiling and clapping,” he said.“This is one of the only times in your life this could happen and I'm very excited.”Mugo says his favorite part of the WPO is making new friends from around the world. “I hope when I go home, I just take a little bit of every friend that I made here-- Brazil, Portugal, Queens,” Mugo said, “I hope that I take part of their culture home with me so I understand them more.”1. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products. At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(来源)of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part ofVon Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear. In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate(说明)a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒)from a truck all atonce.Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.4. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for?A. Beautifying the city he lives in.B. Introducing eco-friendly products.C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste.D. Reducing garbage on the beach.5. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.B. To explain why they are useful.C. To voice his views on modern art.D. To find a substitute for them.6. What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers?A. Calming.B. Disturbing.C. Refreshing.D. Challenging.7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Artists’ Opinions on Plastic SafetyB. Media Interest in Contemporary ArtC. Responsibility Demanded of Big CompaniesD. Ocean Plastics Transformed into SculpturesCEver wondered if dogs can learn new words? Yes, say researchers as they have found that talented dogs may have the ability to grasp new words after hearing them only four times. While previous evidence seems to show that most dogs do not learn words, unless eventually very well trained, a few individuals have shown some extraordinary abilities, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.“We wanted to know under which conditions the gifted dogs may learn novel words” said researcher xuekw Claudia Fugazza from theEötvösLorándUniversityinHungary. For the study, the team involved two gifted dogs, Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team exposed the dogs to the new words in two different conditions. In the exclusion-based task, presented with seven known toys and one new toy, the dogs were able to select the new toy when presented with a new name. Researchers say this proves that dogs can choose by exclusion when faced with a new word, they selected the only toy which did not have a known name. However, this was not the way they would learn the name of the toy. In fact, when they were presented with one more equally new name to test their ability to recognize the toy by its name, the dogs got totally confused and failed. The other condition, the social one, where the dogs played with their owners who pronounced the name of the toy while playing with the dog, proved to be the successful way to learn the name of the toy, even after hearing it only 4 times. “The rapid learning that we observed seems to equal children’s ability to learn many new words at afast rate around the age of 18 months,” Fugazza says. “But we do not know whether the learning mechanisms(机制) behind this learning are the same for humans and dogs. ”To test whether most dogs would learn words this way, 20 other dogs were tested in the same condition, but none of them showed any evidence of learning the toy names, confirming that the abilityto learn words rapidly in the absence of formal training is very rare and is only present in a few gifted dogs.8. What was the purpose of the study published in Scientific Reports?A. To better train dogs’ ability to learn new words.B. To further confirm previous evidence about dogs.C. To prove extraordinary memory abilities of gifted dogs.D. To explore favorable conditions for gifted dogs’ new-word learning.9. How did the dogs react when exposed to two new names in the first condition?A. Slow to understand.B. Quick to learn.C. At a loss.D. In a panic.10. What was found about dogs’ new-word learning in the social condition?A. Learning through playing applied to most dogs.B. The social condition helped dogs learn new words.CDogs’ new-word learning turned out to be less effective.D. Dogs shared similar learning mechanisms with children.11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. Gifted Dogs Can Learn New Words Rapidly.B. Dogs Identify Newly-named Toys by Exclusion.C. Dogs Can Acquire Vocabulary through Tons of Training.D. Gifted Dogs Have Similar Learning Abilities to Humans.DIt’s become an accepted part of keeping up to date with extended family and friends, but if schoolchildren were in their parents’ shoes, the majority wouldn’t share posts of their sons and daughters online. Over 55% said they would not upload news about, or images of, their children to their social media feeds, according to survey of over 16,000 pupils by Votes for Schools. While some were concerned about being embarrassed or the longevity of content which could remain online indefinitely, others expressed concern about their personal data beingcompromised. One of the pupils surveyed said, “Although our parents mean well, sometimes theconsequenceof a post can be disastrous.”In response to thesurvey, children’s mental health charity Place2Be and law firm Mishcon de Reya have produced three films ahead of the Christmas holidays – the best period for parental oversharing. In one video, about safety online, 10-year-old Adavan said, “If you share anything with your family, you know who’s going to see it. But if you share it publicly, there are millions of people who can see your picture.”Joe Hancock, a security lead at Mishcon de Reya, encouraged parents to share wisely. “Simple steps, such as checking your privacy settings and asking others not to share content of your children on their accounts if they have not updated their privacy settings, are a good start. And, as we found out from the children during filming, having their permission is key,” he said. The study marks a shift away from the usual debate about teaching children to use the Internet safely. Sandra Davis, head of the law firm’s family department, said, “Children are the experts on the real and immediate impact of sharenting(晒娃)– the full extent of which we cannot know yet. We must ensure we listen to children and take their views into consideration now in order to avoid any unintendedconsequences further down the line.”12.What’s most pupils’ attitude towards sharing posts about children?A. Skeptical.B. Unconcerned.C. Tolerant.D. Unwilling.13.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?A. Summarize the previous paragraph.B. Provide some advice for parents.C. Predict the consequence of sharing posts.D. Give reasons for the result of the survey.14.What should parents first pay attention to according to Joe Hancock?A. Safety.B. Consequence.C. Wisdom.D. Health.15.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Parents should take children’s opinions into account.B. Parents should teach children to use the Internet safely.C. Children must make sure to listen to their parents.D. Children should avoid unintended consequences of sharenting.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks."The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of its components is off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own’ said Robert Wood, a Harvard engineering professor. They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings hasa number of interdependencies (相互依赖)on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it d connected to,” said Wood. While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites,in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. "Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications.“You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animal, but using these robots instead” he said. Also, children who slept for shorter periods at night were more likely to be associated with borderline personality disorder at ages 11 and 12.The research, published in the journalJAMA Psychiatry, was the first time possible links between early childhood sleep problems and adolescent psychotic experiences and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms have been examined.“We know from previous research that persistent nightmares in children have been associated with both psychosis and borderline personality disorder,” said lead author Isabel at theInstituteofMental Healthat theUniversityofBirmingham.“But nightmares don’t tell the whole story. We’ve found that, in fact, a number of behavioral sleep problems in childhood can point towards these problems in adolescence,” she said.Adolescence, typically defined as the ages between 10 and 19, is a key period in human development because of brain and hormonal changes, anditis now thought to be when many mental health problems start.Prior research inAustraliafound that babies with persistent severe sleep problems in their first year were at greater risk for anxiety and emotional issues in later childhood. Sleep problems in children and adolescents have been shown to predict the development of various emotional and behavioral problems, including depression, anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, risk-taking and aggression. However, findings have been inconsistent, especially when based on objective measurements of sleep, rather than parental reports.Sleep and mental health are closely connected in adults, with sleep problems increasing the risk for developing particular mental illnesses as well as resulting in mental health issues.12. 一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解One of my favorite hobbies is exchanging old-fashioned, paper-with-a-stamp-on-it postcards with random strangers around the world. The Postcrossing Project was created by Paulo Magalhaes in 2005. He liked getting mails—especially postcards. He thought others did, too—but how could he connect with them? That's when he came up with the idea of an online platform (): There, postcard lovers like me can sign up to send a postcard to someone who has registered online, and receive a postcard in return.Along with a randomly selected address, participants get a unique code to put on the postcard. When the postcard arrives, the recipient registers that code with the site, which then causes the sender's address to be given to another postcrosser in turn. In practice, this means that for nearly every postcard I send (a few get lost in the mail) I get one back. And since I never know who will send me a card or where in the world they live, every trip to the mailbox holds the potential for a wonderful surprise.Privacy-conscious Americans might worry about sharing their address with strangers overseas. But postcrossers are friendly, polite, respectful folks—in more than 450 cards exchanged, I've yet to have a bad experience. On days when the international news is depressing, postcrossing is my comfort. There's nothing like getting a card from a child in China just learning to write in English, or a grandmother in Belarus describing her most recent gardening success to remind me that we truly are members of one global family, far more similar than we are different. It seems like such a small thing to send out a postcard. But as travel and communication technology continue to shrink the world, it's important to remember that it isn't just for diplomats and politicians to represent our country anymore. All of us have the power—and perhaps the responsibility—to be ambassadors, to show the best of your country to the world. And it's good to know that what you need to accomplish this is not necessarily complicated or expensive. It can be as simple as a postcard.(1)Why did Paulo set up ?A. To discuss personal hobbies with strangers.B. To exchange postcards with others in the worldC. To collect different postcards from other countries.D. To provide a platform for communication online.(2)According to the passage, postcrossers __________.A. don't know who will send them postcardsB. are sure to get a postcard back immediatelyC. often choose a receiver's address carefullyD. register every postcard they receive online (3)What did the writer learn from postcrossing?A. The international news is usually depressing.B. Americans are more conscious about privacy.C. Postcrossers sometimes describe their bad experience.D. The whole world is actually a big family.(4)What does the underlined word "this" refer to?A. Choosing a diplomat to represent a country.B. Having the responsibility to be an ambassador.C. Showing the best of your country.D. Shrinking the world with communication technology.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇应用文,介绍了网站,一个可以让世界各地的陌生人交换老式的、带有邮票的明信片的网站,由Paulo Magalhaes 在2005年创立。

We learned that, over time,a full life can leave little time for personal rest and for reflection, hanging out with friends,or just being“off. ”So,after a number of years,we make a change. If I can persuade you to take your own PTO,then these might help.■Schedule itFirst of all,one of our favorite family sayings is“schedule it. ”Sounds easy enough, but life gets complicated managing full-time work and full-time family. Put yourPTO time on the calendar and you make it a real thing.■Be flexible and strictIf you can schedule PTO at the same time each week, then all the better. Because our calendar can get rather full, flexibility in scheduling becomes a necessity. But being strict in actually taking the time each week is more important. Skipping it once makes it easier to skip again.■Take enough timeMy typical PTO lasts a couple of hours or longer. Sometimes it might be half the day depending on what I’m doing. The goal is to spend enough time away to1et your shoulders drop.■Do what you want to doRemember,PTO time is about personal time to do what you want to do,not what you have to do. Sports & EntertainmentCIt’s a little before8 a.m. when Mathias Schergen pushes open the side door at Chicago’s Jenner Elementary Academy for the Arts. He walks down the hall toward the office to sign in. It’s the same routine he’s had as Jenner’s art teacher for nearly a quarter century. “It’s going to be a good day,” a colleague calls out. “It’s a good day.” They hug. It seems like a typical Friday. Except it’s not. After 23 years at Jenner Elementary, Schergen is retiring. Even on his last day, there are still art projects to finish.Schergen leaves behind a richlegacyat this school. He’s won grants (拨款) for art projects. He turned an empty classroom into a museum. He’s pushed his students to make art about their lives. And he was awarded aGolden Apple — the most honorable teaching award in Chicago. But it wasn’t always easy. For years, Schergen taught in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods. “When I first got my room, I noticed there were bullet holes in the window. That made me nervous,” he says. So he stuffed Beanie Babies in the holes to make it “look kind of funny”. “I didn’t even tell my wife for a whole year,” he says. “I didn’t want her to know.”With one hour to go, Schergen piles the chairs and sweeps the floor. He cleans out the sink for the last time. Fifth-grader Deontae Barnes, one of his best helpers, has watched him say goodbye all day. He wanders in the doorway. “Ah, come here, son,” Schergen says, signaling him over. He bends down for a hug. “Thank you for making these last days special and being a help to me.”When Deontae leaves, a reporter asks Schergen: When your kids ask why you’re retiring, what do you tell them? “I just tell them that grown people have dreams too,” he says. “I have other things in my life I have to do. It’s time. It’s just time.”8. Why is it a special Friday for Schergen?A. He was retiring on that day.B. He won an honor for his school.C. He was interviewed by a reporter.D. Students’ poor academic performance.11. What is the best title for the text?A.A Typical Day for an Art TeacherB. Time for Art ProjectsC. A Teacher’s Final Day at SchoolD. The Last Art ClassDNew research has shown that loneliness may affect ants to a greater extent than many other living creatures. It has long been known that loneliness can lead to a shorter life. In humans, it has even been found to be a driver of high blood pressure, sleep disorder, and depression that’s independent of factors like age, race, gender, weight and economic status. However, loneliness has never been identified as a factor that can cut human lifespan by more than a small part of the average. Ants, on the other hand, appear to be far more sensitive to this stress, with loneliness leading to asurprising 91 percent reduction in lifespan. That’s at least according to a study that details how “lonely” ants only live up to six days on average. Ants living in a community, on the other hand, were found to live up to about 66 days.In a series of experiments where ants were picked from their colonies (群体) and separated, they were found to continuously walk without rest, consuming far more energy than they could ever. The reason for the behavior is that an isolated ant is simple trying to get back to its colony at all costs, and doesn’t know what to do without its nest mates. After all, many entomologists (昆虫学家) would argue that an ant colony is far more a single living entity (实体) than its members. If you were to take a single part from a clock, it would simply move aimlessly as well, running without a purpose. However, while there is a difference between aimlessness and loneliness, the researchers found that the latter affects lonely ants more directly. The study indicated that ants can’t even eat alone, as they normally collect some of the food they gather in the field in a specialized organ called a crop. This crop is normally shared with other ants back at a nest, but as for a single ant, it simply just sits there, undigested and useless.12. How does loneliness influence a person?A. It can make him very tired of himself.B. It can leave him in conflict with others.C. It can lead to him being very independent.D. It can cause him to suffer from poor health13. What can be learned from the experiments?A. Most ants can live about 6 days on average.B. Lonely ants can become very restless.C. Human beings are similar to ants in some way.D. Lonely ants seem to be violent and impatient.14. Why does an isolated ant walk non-stop?A. It attempts to return to its colony.B. It wants to attract other ants to form a colony.C. It hopes to make signals to its mates.D. It has to find more food to survive.15. The author mentioned a clock in the passage_________.A. to show ants have a biological clock in the head.B. to prove ants are a well-regulated community.C. to stress ants are really highly social animals.D. to compare aimlessness with loneliness.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

For each of them there arefour choices marked A. B. C. and D. You should decide on the best choice.AGiven its subject matter and time slot, A Bite of China was initially considered a "weak player" on TV."Man is what he eats," said Ludwig Feuerbach. From its very beginning, A Bite of China is not just adocumentary about food. "The scenes of digging for bamboo shoots, hanging hams, catching fish using anet, opening a steamer filled with white steamed buns, and pulling wheat dough into thin strands fornoodles move us to tears. What a lovely China!" a viewer said.A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relationsbetween people and food and between people and society from the perspective of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every graincomes from hard and laborious toil. Some people see patriotism in the documentary, and some considerit a great cultural export. How did this documentary achieve a tremendous influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time?"It is not empty propaganda about China's splendid food culture. Instead, it shows the techniques usedin making food and their production process as well as the lives of ordinary people, thus striking achord with the audience," an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be attributedto sincerity and reality. It is said sarcastically that Americans like to shoot sci-fi films because they have no history, whileChinese like to shoot time-travel dramas to the past because they have no future. The correctness ofthis arbitrary conclusion is debatable, but it has raised a thought-provoking question. Works that arecreated behind closed doors and fail to reflect reality or that only focus on the luxury lives of a fewpeople and ignore ordinary people's desire for ample food and clothing will not touch people's hearts."We made this documentary with our respect and love for food," said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincere is the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convinced. Sincerity is the "secret"for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.16. We s ay, “Nice song.” “Honey, you don’t look fat in that, no.” But another study showed that strangers lied three times within the first 10 minutes of meeting each other. Not all lies are harmful. Sometimes we’re willing to lie for the sake of social dignity, maybe to keep a private secret.Lying is complex. It’s woven into the fabric of our daily and business lives. We’re deeply disturbedby the truth. We explain it, sometimes for very good r easons, other times just because we don’t understand the gaps between ideals and realities in our lives. We’re against lying, but secretly we’re for itin ways that our society has practiced for centuries and centuries. It’s as old as breathing. It’spart of our culture and history. Think the stories from Dante, Shakespeare, the Bible, and News of theWorld.Lying has great value to the evolution of human b eing. Researchers have long known that the more intelligentthe species, the more likely it is to lie. We human like to become leaders. It starts really early. Howearly? Well, babies will pretend to cry, pause, wait to see who’s coming and then go right back to crying. One-year-olds learn hiding truth. Two-year-olds bluff (虚张声势). Five-year-olds lie outright and tryto control via flattery (讨好). Nine-year-olds, masters of covering up. By the time you enter college, you’re going to lie to your mom in one out of every five interactions. By the time we enter this workworld to b e breadwinners, we’ve entered a world that is just full of fake digital friends, businessmedia, identity thieves, world-class cheats, ——in short, a post-truth society. We all make the samemistakes. This has forced doctors to be more creative in finding different treatments forthe condition. In the past two decades, researchers have tied depression to a seemingly unrelated condition:inflammation(炎症), the body’s natural response to stress. It could rise from injury or inflection,or even emotional issues like an unhappy marriage or problems at work. Some amount of inflammation isgenerally beneficial, as it increases production of cytokines (细胞因子),proteins that help us healand protect us from the effects of overwork. But excessive cytokine levels, and the inflammation they bring on, could come at a cost. A numberof studies suggest that high levels of cytokines could contribute to depression.Cytokines can reach the brain several ways: directly through the blood-brain barrier or indirectlyby binding to nerve fibers elsewhere, which send signals to the brain to produce the inflammation molecules. In the brain, cytokines can disturb the production and release of several important signaling chemicals, including serotonin, dopamine and glutamate, which help control emotion, appetite, sleep, learning andmemory. It’s though that a lack of serotonin activity in the brain causes depression; most antidepressants increase the activity. But cytokines also have been shown to activate stress hormone signaling in thebrain, which may also serve to develop depression. With all the evidence implicating inflammation in depression, doctors have been anxious to testanti-inflammatory drugs as a potential treatment. Four small students published between 2006 and 2012by research groups in Europe and Iran found that adults diagnosed with depression who took aspirin oranother anti-inflammatory drug called Celecoxib, along with an antidepressant, got more relief fromfeelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt and fatigue compared with those taking an antidepressant alone. However, Andrew Miller, a professor of psychiatry at Emory University, thought something was amiss inthese small, limited studies. None of them looked at whether the participants had to have high levelsof cytokines before into the trap of viewing inflammatory drugs.
