在中学阶段培养学生英语自学能力是非常重要的，这需要教师在教学过程中对学生进行有计划、分层次的训练，激发学生的求知欲，使自学成为他们内在的需要，使学生从苦学到乐学，从学会到会学，使学生真正获得适应社会需要的学习能力。
首先，注重英语教学中的非智力因素。
现在的初中生，获取信息的渠道多，见识广。
从生理心理角度看，他们的身心正处在迅速成长阶段，成人感和独立意识逐渐增强，喜欢独立思考，对事物有着自己的见解，对教师不再“唯命是从”。

为了帮助学生提高听课的效率，培养学生自学的能力，我根据课型的不同，设计了不同的预习作业。
有的是几个重点词语和句子，需要学生阅读书本内容自己去找的；有的是关于课文内容的几个简单的问题，需要学生先熟悉课文大意的；有的是和新课内容相关的旧的语法知识的复习和整理；有的是和课本话题相关的、贴近学生生活实际的问题的小讨论……多样化的预习作业既引导学生带着问题去熟悉新课内容，又激发了学生对新课内容的好奇和兴趣，从而最大限度地为上课做好了准备。
