Gothic novel as one branch of the English literature and the father of horror movies origins from The Castle of Otranto(1764). More importantly, it leads habitually with darkness and horror. Gothic elements include horror, mystery, supernatural phenomenon, misfortune, death, haunted houses, and family curses.
4. Omens, portents, visions(预兆). A character may have a disturbing dream vision, or some phenomenon may be seen as a portent of coming events. For example, if the statue of the lord of the manor falls over, it may portend his death. In modern fiction, a character might see something (a shadowy figure stabbing another shadowy figure) and think that it was a dream. This might be thought of as an "imitation vision."

Woolf - A Haunted House
A Haunted HouseWoolf, Virginia Published:1921Type(s):Short Fiction, Ghost StoriesSource:.auAbout Woolf:Virginia Woolf(January25,1882–March28,1941)was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century.During the interwar period,Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dal-loway(1925),To the Lighthouse(1927),and Orlando(1928),and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own(1929)with its famous dictum, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction".Also available on Feedbooks for Woolf:•To the Lighthouse(1927)•Mrs. Dalloway(1925)•The Waves(1931)•Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street(1923)•Between the Acts(1941)•The Years(1937)•The Duchess and the Jeweller(1938)•The Mark on the Wall(1917)•An Unwritten Novel(1920)•Moments of Being. "The Treasure yours."The wind roars up the avenue.Trees stoop and bend this way and that.Moonbeams splash and spill wildly in the rain. But the beam of the lamp falls straight from the window. The candle burns stiff and still.Wandering through the house, opening the windows, whispering not to wake us, the ghostly couple seek their joy."Here we slept,"she says. And he adds,"Kisses without number." "Waking in the morning—""Silver between the trees—""Upstairs—""In the garden—""When summer came—""In winter snowtime—"The doors go shutting far in the distance, gently knocking like the pulse of a heart.Nearer they come;cease at the doorway. The wind falls, the rain slides silver down the glass. Our eyes darken;we hear no steps beside us;we see no lady spread her ghostly cloak. His hands shield the lantern. "Look," he breathes. "Sound asleep. Love upon their lips."Stooping, holding their silver lamp above us,long they look and deeply.Long they pause. The wind drives straightly;the flame stoops slightly.Wild beams of moonlight cross both floor and wall,and,meet-ing,stain the faces bent;the faces pondering;the faces that search the sleepers and seek their hidden joy."Safe, safe, safe,"the heart of the house beats proudly."Long years—" he sighs."Again you found me.""Here,"she murmurs,"sleeping;in the garden reading;laughing, rolling apples in the loft. Here we left our treasure—"Stooping, their light lifts the lids upon my eyes."Safe!safe! safe!"the pulse of the house beats wildly.Waking,I cry"Oh,is this your buried treasure? The light in the heart."Loved this book ?Similar users also downloadedMrs. Dalloway,Virginia WoolfMrs Dalloway(published on14May1925)is a novel by Virginia Woolf that details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway in post-World War I England.Mrs Dalloway continues to be one of Woolf's best-known novels.Created from two short stories,"Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street"and the unfinished"The Prime Minister",the novel's story is of Clarissa's prepar-ations for a party of which she is to be hostess. With the interior per-spective of the novel, the story travels forwards and back in time, and in and out of the characters'minds,to construct a complete image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure. To the Lighthouse,Virginia WoolfTo the Lighthouse(5May1927)is a novel by Virginia Woolf.A land-mark novel of high modernism, the text, centering on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between1910and1920, skillfully manipulates temporality and psychological exploration. To the Lighthouse follows and extends the tradition of modernist novel-ists like Marcel Proust and James Joyce, where the plot is secondary to philosophical introspection, and the prose can be winding and hard to follow. The novel includes little dialogue and almost no action;most of it is written as thoughts and observations. The novel recalls the power of childhood emotions and highlights the impermanence of adult relation-ships. One of the book's several themes is the ubiquity of transience. The Waves,Virginia WoolfOne of Woolf’s most experimental novels,The Waves presents six characters in monologue-from morning until night, from childhood into old age-against a background of the sea.The result is a glorious chorus of voices that exists not to remark on the passing of events but to celeb-rate the connection between its various individual parts. The Canterville Ghost,Oscar WildeThe Canterville Ghost is a popular1887novella by Oscar Wilde, widely adapted for the screen and stage.“The Canterville Ghost”is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and the United States minister(ambassador)to the Court of St. James's,Hiram B.Otis.Mr.Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted country house.Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the house, warns Mr.Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted it ever since he killed his wife,Eleonore, three centuries before. But Mr.Otis dismisses the ghost story as bunk and dis-regards Lord Canterville’s warnings. When the Otises learn that the house is indeed haunted, they succeed in victimizing the ghost and in disregarding age-old British traditions. What emerges is a satire of American materialism,a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale.Between the Acts,Virginia WoolfIn Woolf’s last novel, the action takes place on one summer’s day at a country house in the heart of England, where the villagers are presenting their annual pageant. A lyrical, moving valedictory. The Years,Virginia WoolfThe Haunted House,Charles DickensMrs Dalloway in Bond Street,Virginia WoolfThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow,Washington IrvingThe Picture of Dorian Gray,Oscar WildeOscar Wilde's story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is one of his most popular works.Written in Wilde's characteristically dazzling manner, full of stinging epigrams and shrewd observations, the tale of Dorian Gray's moral disintegration caused something of a scandal when it first appeared in1890.Wilde was attacked for his decadence and corrupting influence, and a few years later the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became is-sues in the trials occasioned by Wilde's homosexual liaisons, trials that resulted in his imprisonment.Of the book's value as autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter,"Basil Hallward is what I think I am:Lord Henrywhat the world thinks me:Dorian what I would like to be--in other ages, perhaps." the canterville ghost 读后感

Ebonezer, a businessman described in The Ghost of Canterville, was cursed for greed and selfishness and was trapped in a ghost。
This story implies that people should cherish their current happiness and not pursue endless material desires。
It also inspires us, for example, that many people are busy at work, neglecting family warmth and even forgetting to be good to their parents。
Persons in the workplace can enhance family relations by improving their working methods and adjusting their working hours in an appropriate manner, andby apanying their families in order to avoid the loss of valuable human relations in pursuit of wealth, as in the case of Ebola。
1Black Cat English Graded ReadersI'm a student in middle school, and one of the things I really like is reading the Black Cat English graded reader books. They've helped me a lot with learning English. Let me tell you about them! The Black Cat readers come in different levels from Starter up to Level 8. The lower levels use simple vocabulary and grammar. As you go up through the levels, the books get longer and more challenging. But they're all really engaging stories that make you want to keep reading.I started with the Starter level books when I was younger. These have just a few hundred words of text, big print, and lots of pictures to help understand the story. The vocabulary is super basic, like colors, numbers, common objects and so on. The grammar is simple sentences too. Some examples of the Starter level books I read were "Jack and the Beanstalk", "The Elves and the Shoemaker", and "TheTown Mouse and the Country Mouse". Even though the language was very easy, the stories were still fun to read. And having the pictures there made it much easier to figure out what was happening.Once I got through most of the Starter level, I moved up to Level 1 books. These were still pretty simple, but started having a bit more advanced vocabulary and longer sentences. There were less pictures too, so you had to rely more on the words themselves. Some Level 1 books I liked were the classic tales like "The Gingerbread Man" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". There were also original fiction stories like "The Ring" about a girl who finds a magic ring. The language got slightly trickier, but the stories were still very engaging for kids. I remember feeling really proud when I could read an entire Level 1 book on my own!As I kept improving, I progressed through the other levels. Level 2 had books around 800 words long with more descriptive writing. Level 3 was where I started seeing some more complex grammar and idioms. By Level 4, the books were novellas of a few thousand words, with more advanced plot lines and themes. One book I really enjoyed from these higher levels was "The Canterville Ghost" - it's a funny story about a haunted house andthe ghost who tries to scare the new family living there. The language was challenging at times, but the humor and imagination of the story kept me motivated to push through.Another memorable one was "The Age of Innocence" which looks at society life in 19th century New York. It exposed me to a lot of new vocabulary around wealth, social classes, and cultural traditions. Reading stuff like that really expanded my English skills.Even now at the middle school level, I still actively read the Black Cat books around Levels 6-8. The stories are as engaging as adult novels, but carefully controlled to provide an effective language learning experience. Some topics they cover include classic literature, historical fiction, mysteries, sci-fi, and more. For example, I recently read "The Withered Arm" which is a haunting story in the horror genre full of atmosphere and suspense. Another good one was "The Yellow Wallpaper" - a psychological drama that really made me think. Between the challenging vocabulary and complex themes, these higher level books are perfect for building advanced English skills.Overall, I'm so grateful to have had the Black Cat graded reader series to guide my English learning journey over the years. The way the levels are structured provides an ideal progression -you're constantly being exposed to new vocabulary and grammar structures, but at a manageable pace that lets you achieve a true understanding. The wide variety of stories across all the levels keeps things interesting too. You've got fairy tales and folklore when you're starting out. Then you transition to more contemporary fiction, drama, suspense, and even non-fiction articles as you move up the levels. So you're constantly being exposed to new genres, writing styles, and perspectives which is amazing for an English learner. But most importantly, the stories themselves are sowell-written and compelling that it makes you want to keep reading. Unlike dry textbooks or boring essays, the Black Cat readers are true "pleasurable reading" which is proven to be one of the best ways to effectively learn a language. When you're engaged in a story you enjoy, you'll naturally start understanding and absorbing the language without even realizing it.So I wholeheartedly recommend the Black Cat graded readers to any student looking to improve their English in an engaging, progressive way. They've been an invaluable tool for me, and I know I'll keep reading them to continue expanding mylanguage skills. The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde Introduction to the writerOscar Wilde was an Irish writer and poet. Wilde's parents were successful Anglo-Irish Dublin intellectuals. His father was a surgeon, his mother was a poet and writer. He became fluent in French and German early in life. At university, Wilde read literae humaniores; he proved himself to be an outstanding classicist, first at Dublin, then at Oxford. He became known for his involvement in the rising philosophy of aestheticism. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. As a spokesman for aestheticism, he tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems, lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art", and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day.At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. Oscar Wilde's drama brought him great honor. In 1895, Marquess of Queensberry found his son Lord Alfred Douglas has been with Wilde for four years and accused of him. Oscar Wilde immediately appealed against Marquess of Queensberry. But the result is Wilde failed the appeal, and was called committing ACTS of gross indecency with other male persons and was sentenced to be a hard labor for two years. At last he was died of meningitis in 1990 in Paris.Thesis statementThrough “The Canterville Ghost” we can see the aestheticism of Oscar Wilde and dispel to aesthetics.AnalysisLike other works of Oscar Wilde, clearly reflects the concept of Wilde's aestheticism. The first performance of aesthetics is the ghost of Canterville. He is arguably one of the most radical aesthetes in Wilde’s works. The only reason why he had killed his wife was just his wife cooking skill was so poor that she made a beautiful deer that he had just hunted a mess, and there is no aesthetic feeling anymore. In other words, he killed his wife simply in order to defend his aesthetic pursuit. For the revenge of brother-in-law, the ghost was also very dissatisfied about the aesthetic point of view."Her brothers killed me by starving to death, which didn’t have enough beautiful, although I did kill their sister." It is visible that in the logic of the ghost, judging the standard of things is not ethical, not right and wrong, but the aesthetics.Ghosts have not only beautiful concepts, but also more interested in performance art. His every appearance is an elaborate show. He spent a lot of time choosing clothes in the closet, designing for the action of appearance to make himself a blockbuster. This performance art is to bring terror feeling. We have to admit that the ghost has genius of imagination and artistic inspiration. We also recognized that the ghost gained the achievements and pleasure through aesthetic pursuit is at the expense of the loss of conscience and hurt others. It is a sin.Although there are so many thrilling artistic achievements, ghosts had thoroughly taken a knock by a minister in the United States after moving into the castle. Rusty chains dragging in the hallway had not frighten them, but be given a small bottle of lubricating oil; frightening smile of ghost didn’t get scream, but the minister's wife a bottle of Dr. Dobell's tincture. Two children who love mischief even make the real ghost cry. These naive and funny tricks deconstruct t he ghost’s sense of art that he valued it too highly. This gave ghost even aestheticism a great irony. It also illustrates that Oscar Wilde think of aesthetics as a pessimistic fate. The set of ghost’s fate itself questioned the aestheticism of Wilde’s own views. "For the art and love, you have everything you need."The finally yearning of ghost is just asking the Angel to have mercy on him. He hoped to lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time,to forgive life, to be at peace. The ghost at the last moment gave up his aesthetic pursuit, and chose to repent. He sincerely repentance impressed the minister's daughter Virginia. She is willing to help the ghost and eventually make the ghost rest and get peace.ConclusionIn this novel, humanity spirit replaced the aesthetic pursuit and became the real power of salvation. Virginia helped ghost redeem himself. She had a general tolerance and love as Jesus. The love of Jesus is absolute, universal and beyond any resentment and jealousy. The Gospel of Luke, Jesus enlightenment public: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.It was Virginia's spirit of universal love but not the pursuit of beauty that made ghost get real forgiveness of God and made him get peace. Wilde chose spirit of universal love to take place aesthetic pursuit for the comfort of human spirit, and ultimately realized the aesthetics’redemption through spirit of universal love.Works cited1.
