My best friend, Lily, came with me. I remember arriving at the Center the first day, assuming the staff there would take us to meet the family we were to stay with and get us settled. Instead, they handed us a piece of paper with the address and put us in a taxi. I remember how scared I was. All of a sudden I was across theocean in a city I didn't know, and I was losing confidence in my Spanish skills quickly while trying to speak with the taxi driver. As soon as we arrived at our new home in Spain, however, I knew that I was going to spend a happy, comfortable three weeks learning and exploring. We met the mother of the family we would stay with. Her name is Fina, and she greeted us warmly with a kiss on each cheek. She shares a beautiful apartment with her two daughters, Maribel and Laura. After meeting them, I was no longer worried about things. After that first day, Lily and I were ready to explore. We went down to the bus stop and bought a month long pass so that we could easily get around the city. The people of Seville were so friendly and we simply asked a passerby for directions whenever we needed them. I quickly gained confidence in my Spanish again as I practiced more and more every day. Lily and I began to grow used to Spanish life. One of the happiest moments on my trip occurred during the last week in Seville. Lily and I were walking down the street going shopping, when a Spaniard stopped to ask us for directions! The culture there is so wonderful that it is hard to want to live any other way. After the busy life in the United States, I actually had to make myself slow down. One of the things that I loved most about Spain was the fact that there is no fast food. Before school every morning, I would of course wake up too late. Then we would rush down to the bus which we could take half-way to class. The class itself was a very exciting learning experience for me. I was so proud of myself to have taken a class entirely in Spanish, and understood what was going on. I loved the change of pace and challenged myself. My professor was a wonderful man, and made the three-hour class fly by. He had so many interesting stories about Spanish culture and life. One of the things I loved most about being in another country was meeting people from all over the world. We met students from Britain, Australia, Morocco, France, Germany, and many other countries. It was a lot of fun talking with people from so many different backgrounds and perspectives. It is hard toimagine people living so differently from the way we do in our little state of Pennsylvania. This experience is going to be helpful to my teaching because it has made me more open-minded and bold (勇敢的). I have learned that the way I am used to doing things is not always the best way. The more different perspectives and backgrounds that we can experience, the more we can learn.1. I know this from personal experience.Email makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't automatically much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool. The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun − see a great film, perhaps − and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story. With email, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience (方便), and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.Email is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents useemail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't eliminate (排除) any of the old ways.56. The purpose of this passage is to ________.A. explain how to use the InternetB. describe the writer's joy of keeping up with new technologyC. tell the merits and usefulness of the InternetD. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet57. The use of email has made it possible for the writer to ________.A. spend less time working B . have more free time with hischildC. work at home on weekendsD. work at a speed comfortable to him58. According to the writer, email has a clear advantage over the telephone because email helps one ________.A. reach a group of people at one time convenientlyB. keep one's communication as personal as possibleC. pass on much more information than the telephoneD. get in touch with one's friends faster than the telephone59. The passage discussed all the following elements of email EXCEPT ________.A. its costB. the way of writingC. the saving of timeD. its easy and convenient use60. The best subject for this passage is ________.A. Computers: New Technological AdvancesB. Internet: A New Tool to Make FriendsC. Computers Have Made Life EasierD. Internet: A Convenient Tool for CommunicationPassage 2Jim was a young man who was honest and worthy of trust, so his boss was pleased with him. As he was easy to deal with, he was popular with his workmates, too. Though they made fun of him a great deal, he never got angry with them. But Jim's one great shortcoming was that he could never tell a lie, no matter how hard he tried, not even a little one. In fact, he was so honest and shy that he would blush (脸红) even when he was telling the truth. He used to stand in front of the mirror and practice lying while looking himself in the eye at the same time. As soon as he told a lie he'd see his face starting to go red and he had to look away. One morning, however, he didn't feel like going to work. But in order to do this, he'd have to lie to his boss. He called his boss, pretending to be a woman. "I'm afraid Jim can't come to work today. He isn't feeling very well."Poor Jim was thankful that his boss couldn't see him just at that moment because his face was bright red."Thank you for letting me know," said Mr. Woods, his boss, and then just as he was about to hang up, he said, "Just a moment, madam, who's speaking?""Oh!" Jim stammered (口吃地说), and going all-out to make his voice sound like a woman's, he cried, "This is my landlady speaking!"61. Jim's face would always turn red because ________.A. he was honestB. he became embarrassedwhenever he liedC. he did not like to talkD. he was getting sick62. Reading a book by the warm fireside will be another pastime on a cool winter night. Life in the country is indeed simple and pleasant.
example
In America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three categories. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars----the people associated with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talents but not wonders if as a role model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear in the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such externals as money and good clothes.
Country life and city life
Some people think that people living in the country enjoy several advantages that people living in the city cannot. Country people are in close contact with the nature. They make friends with trees and stones, cows and dogs. They breathe fresh air and listen to the song of birds. Other people believe that people living in cities have much to enjoy. There are all sorts of things to see in the shop windows. There are lecture and concerts, movies and plays. The means of communication in the city is more convenient than in the country.

One such painting is known asattributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representationof the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be byRembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it couldnot be a work by Rembrandt.First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in theportrait is dressed. 我是军市一号上的一个厨师,跟岸上的人一样,那个感恩节的上午,我们忙着在准备一道以烤火鸡为主的传统菜肴。
3 Well, as any cook knows, it's a lot of hard work to cook and serve a big meal, and clean up and put everything away. But finally, around sundown, we finished at last.
2 I was one of the Murzim's several cooks and, quite the same as for folk ashore, this Thanksgiving morning had seen us busily preparing a traditional dinner featuring roast turkey.

Writing Three Thank-You Letters
Alex Haley
1 It was 1943, during World War II, and I was a young U. S. coastguardsman. My ship, the USS Murzim, had been under way for several days. Most of her holds contained thousands of cartons of canned or dried foods. The other holds were loaded with five-hundred-pound bombs packed delicately in padded racks. Our destination was a big base on the island of Tulagi in the South Pacific.

My hobby is collecting stamps. I like collecting stamps because I think this is an enjoyment of art. When I am free, I open my album. Through collecting stamps, I can learn a lot, for example, high mountains, great rivers, famous persons, historic events and well-known scenic spots.

We have had a discussion on how to / whether / ...Different people have different opinions on ...In the discussion on ..., people have several different opinions.People hold different opinions on whether / ...People take different attitudes towards ...主体:Those who agree ... think ...People who are against ... think ...Some people hold the opinion that it is good to ... because ...Some people think ..., while others argue that ...On the one hand, ..., on the other hand, ...On the contrary, some people think ...Firstly / First / First to all ... Secondly / Second ... Lastly / Last but not least ...结尾:In short, I firmly support the view that ...I think / don’t think ...I think whether ... or not depends on ...From my point of view / As far as I am concerned / In my opinion, ...【参考范文】Recently our class has had a discussion on whether human cloning should be allowed. Different students have different opinions. Some are for human cloning because they think it will help those who aren’t able to give babies achieve their dreams. Besides, human cloning helps maintain or save people’s lives as human cells can be cloned and used for medical treatments. However, those who are against it hold the view that human cloning is against human ethics and morality. What’s worse, this technology can be used by evil leaders or terrorists, which will bring great damage to the world. As far as I am concerned, as long as we use this technology to benefit humans, human cloning should be allowed.。
