My best friend, Lily, came with me. I remember arriving at the Center the first day, assuming the staff there would take us to meet the family we were to stay with and get us settled. Instead, they handed us a piece of paper with the address and put us in a taxi. I remember how scared I was. All of a sudden I was across theocean in a city I didn't know, and I was losing confidence in my Spanish skills quickly while trying to speak with the taxi driver. As soon as we arrived at our new home in Spain, however, I knew that I was going to spend a happy, comfortable three weeks learning and exploring. We met the mother of the family we would stay with. Her name is Fina, and she greeted us warmly with a kiss on each cheek. She shares a beautiful apartment with her two daughters, Maribel and Laura. After meeting them, I was no longer worried about things. After that first day, Lily and I were ready to explore. We went down to the bus stop and bought a month long pass so that we could easily get around the city. The people of Seville were so friendly and we simply asked a passerby for directions whenever we needed them. I quickly gained confidence in my Spanish again as I practiced more and more every day. Lily and I began to grow used to Spanish life. One of the happiest moments on my trip occurred during the last week in Seville. Lily and I were walking down the street going shopping, when a Spaniard stopped to ask us for directions! The culture there is so wonderful that it is hard to want to live any other way. After the busy life in the United States, I actually had to make myself slow down. One of the things that I loved most about Spain was the fact that there is no fast food. Before school every morning, I would of course wake up too late. Then we would rush down to the bus which we could take half-way to class. The class itself was a very exciting learning experience for me. I was so proud of myself to have taken a class entirely in Spanish, and understood what was going on. I loved the change of pace and challenged myself. My professor was a wonderful man, and made the three-hour class fly by. He had so many interesting stories about Spanish culture and life. One of the things I loved most about being in another country was meeting people from all over the world. We met students from Britain, Australia, Morocco, France, Germany, and many other countries. It was a lot of fun talking with people from so many different backgrounds and perspectives. It is hard toimagine people living so differently from the way we do in our little state of Pennsylvania. This experience is going to be helpful to my teaching because it has made me more open-minded and bold (勇敢的). I have learned that the way I am used to doing things is not always the best way. The more different perspectives and backgrounds that we can experience, the more we can learn.1. I know this from personal experience.Email makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't automatically much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool. The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun − see a great film, perhaps − and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story. With email, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience (方便), and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.Email is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents useemail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't eliminate (排除) any of the old ways.56. The purpose of this passage is to ________.A. explain how to use the InternetB. describe the writer's joy of keeping up with new technologyC. tell the merits and usefulness of the InternetD. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet57. The use of email has made it possible for the writer to ________.A. spend less time working B . have more free time with hischildC. work at home on weekendsD. work at a speed comfortable to him58. According to the writer, email has a clear advantage over the telephone because email helps one ________.A. reach a group of people at one time convenientlyB. keep one's communication as personal as possibleC. pass on much more information than the telephoneD. get in touch with one's friends faster than the telephone59. The passage discussed all the following elements of email EXCEPT ________.A. its costB. the way of writingC. the saving of timeD. its easy and convenient use60. The best subject for this passage is ________.A. Computers: New Technological AdvancesB. Internet: A New Tool to Make FriendsC. Computers Have Made Life EasierD. Internet: A Convenient Tool for CommunicationPassage 2Jim was a young man who was honest and worthy of trust, so his boss was pleased with him. Jim stammered (口吃地说), and going all-out to make his voice sound like a woman's, he cried, "This is my landlady speaking!"61. Part I WritingFor this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write an essay entitled The Way toSuccess by commenting on Abraham Lincoln's famous remark, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.14分Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” In my opinion, this remark can be interpreted 解读in this way: If you want to successfully achieve a certain goal, you must be well prepared for it at first. A good preparation involves sufficient 充分的learning, good strategies, and a healthy mentality. To be well prepared, you must first equip yourself with the required knowledge and skills. Only in this way can you move smoothly in all kinds of tough and complex situations. In the process of preparation, you will formulate制定good strategies which can contribute to reducing the potential mistakes, thus leading to higher efficiency. Finally, you must learn to cultivate培养a healthy mentality. You must be fully prepared for the possible setbacks 挫折you may encounter 遇到and devote yourself wholeheartedly to whatever goal you pursue. In a word, success comes to those who are well prepared for it. The way to get prepared is also a way to improve yourself. By sparing no effort to “sharpen your axe”, you will successfully arrive at your destination.11分“Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sh arpening the axe.” This remark of Abraham Lincoln’s may sound ridiculous at first, but it is actually right. In my opinion, the way to success is to make preparations before the final action, because good preparation can improve one’s efficiency. Sharpening the axe may take four hours, but it will only take us a short time to chop down a tree with a sharpened axe. Otherwise, it may require more than six hours’ time to finish the job as the axe is really ineffective.Good preparation means both tools and plan. Before we start to do something, we must have made a good plan in detail. A plan can help us to manage the time and resourses. When both tools and plan are ready, we will start to do our job with confidence. In conclusion, t he way to success is to prepare well. We can only pass the exam we have well prepared, we can only chop down a tree with a axe well prepared. Good preparation is the way to success.8分Abraham Lincoln used to made a remark on how to achieve success. He said, “give me six hours to ch op down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” This has revealed the importance of making preparation to the way to success. The knowledge and ability one need in order to do a great job is just an axe to chop down tree. Students either need varies kinds of skills or need to be very skillful in onearea in order to achieve their career success. However, some of us are just too eager to prove themselves. They are willing to find a job right after graduation, even start to take part in all kinds of unions and communities even when they are under-graduates.It’s the big time to learn knowledges and skills for us students. Only you have made yourself well prepared can you do a greater job on your way to success. Don’t think that making preparation will waste your time and influence the effect of your work. Sharper axe can chop much faster, so is good preparation in future career life.5分Every one has a dream to be a hero. But there are a few individuals can be success. That’s why? Maybe t hey could not find the best way to success. As Abraham Lincoln said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” We should find the best way to chose it. As to Lincoln, the best way is to prepare fully. And it is vital significance for fighting to success to ourselves.Firstly, the good preparing is the good beginning for completing the task. As we known, every building was built on the based subjects. The good beginning will help us to achieve the aims earlier and easier.Secondly, we can find both the advantages and disadvantages when we do preparing something. And then, we can do something to avoid the expression of disadvantages. As far as I am concerned, we should do fully preparing before starting a task. The preparing should be including the thoughts, the ananrys and others. Besides, we should find other ways fitting for ourselves and fight to success along the best way.2分Everyone want to success and everybody desir success, but in our world, although there are many people successed, also many people losed, so I think the successful people are find the way to success, and losed people can’t find the way to success. Why some people are successed. Because they are find the right way, then they hard work. The way to success. Should we persistent our right way. We can’t walk into the short way because the resualts is obvious we abosolute losed, like a children just can walk slowly, but the children want run, he must down. The success is give the person who prepared. The phrase is mean. If we have hard work and we find the right way we also need a very important thing, the thing is chance. In our world, everyone have same chance. Some people prepared and they catched the chance. So they are successed. When the chance came, some people not prepared and not catch the chance. They perhaps losed. All in All, the way to success like a challenge, the winner not won so easy. One pain, one gain.。

高分范文:The Power of Mutual UnderstandingA host of facts in our daily life have proved that lack of understanding is a critical factor leading to disagreement among people, which makes it difficult for people to be on friendly terms with others. That’s why the phrase“mutual understanding”is emphasized.Just as the remark goes,“Seek to understand others, and you will be understood.”The significance of mutual understanding cannot be understanding. On the one hand, mutual understanding serves as a prerequisite for learning progress, career success and happy life.If we understand each other and are willing to reach agreement,we can be empowered to summon multi-forces to grease the wheels of everything. On the other hand, mutual understanding is the lubricant of human relations. For those who wish to build lasting relationships and achieve civilized intercourse, mutual understanding is a foolproof strategy. To sum up,mutual understanding is the basis of our relationships with others and we would be socially idiotic without it.To avoid this, all we need is our utmost effort to seek to understand others.全文翻译:我们日常生活中大量的事实已经证明,缺乏了解是导致人与人之间出现分歧的至关重要的因素,使得人们很难与他人友好相处。

You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. You might not know yourself as well as you think. According to a new study, people are ___26___ accurate judges of only some of their behaviors. While most previous studies on how well people know themselves have been done on long-term personality traits, this new study ___27___ how well people understand how they are acting from one moment to the next. Researchers asked participants to wear audio recorders that automatically ___28___ every 9.5 minutes between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m. to record 30 seconds of audio. These participants were then emailed surveys four times a day asking them to ___29___ how outgoing, agreeable, or conscientious they were during a particular hour of the day. The study used data from 248 participants, all of whom answered questions about their behavior for two ___30___ weeks and wore the audio device for one of those weeks.Six laboratory assistants rated each participant's audio clips to see how their observations compared with people's ___31___ of themselves. The six assistants were generally in agreement with one another about how the people they were observing acted. Further, participants' ratings of their own behaviors agreed with observers' for how outgoing and how conscientious they were being. But the agreement between participants and outside observers was much smaller for agreeableness. Some of this ___32___ could be because the observers used only audio clips, and thus could not read ___33___ like body language, but there are ___34___ other explanations, as people should be able to hear when a participant is being kind versus being rude. The weak agreement between how participants thought they were acting and what observers heard could be because people would rather ___35___ rude behavior.A) activated I) probesB) articulates J) randomC) assessment K) recallD) consecutive L) relativelyE) cues M) saturatedF) deny N) symptomsG) discrepancy O) terminateH) probablySection BDirections:In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by making the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Why we need tiny collegesA) We're experiencing the rebirth of smallness. Farmers markets, tiny homes, and brew pubs all exemplifyour love of smallness. So do charter schools, coffee shops, and local bookstores. Small is often (but not always) more affordable, healthier, and sustainable, but its finest characteristic, the one that turns charm into love, is that going small allows us to be more fully who we are.B) In higher education the trend is mostly in the opposite direction: Universities with 20,000 or30,000students are considered "mid-sized". The nation's largest university, Arizona State University, has 80,000 students on campus and aims to enroll another 100,000 students online. At the other end of the spectrum is a handful of colleges that have fewer than a hundred students on campus and no online courses: colleges such as Sterling College, Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, and Deep Springs College. These colleges are so small that they can only be called "tiny."C) Tiny colleges focus not just on a young person's intellect, but on the young person as a whole. Equallyimportant, tiny colleges ask, "How can education contribute to human flourishing and the well-being of the world?" And they shape a college experience to address that question. They replace concerns about institutional growth with attention to the growth of students as fully developed participants in their communities.D) I've had the privilege of teaching at three different institutions of higher learning during my career-a smallliberal arts college and two mid-sized public universities. I've also been profoundly disappointed in each of these institutions, and in many of my colleagues, especially when it comes to helping students and preparing them for the many responsibilities of adulthood. Administrators focus on the business of running a university, and most faculty focus on their scholarship and teaching their discipline. Little deliberate attention is given to how students mature as individuals and social beings.E) Having just retired from teaching at a public university, I'm now returning to my hometown of Flagstaff,Arizona, to establish a tiny college—Flagstaff College. I'm convinced there's a need for another type of education, one devoted to helping students come into their own and into this beautiful and troubled world. Young people need an education that will provide them with meaning, hope, courage, and passion, as well as information and skills. Large institutions, I believe, are particularly ill-suited to this type of education.F) There's no "best of" list when it comes to tiny colleges, at least not yet. But around the country people arecreating new colleges that provide an alternative to small liberal arts colleges, large public universities, and online education.G) With only 26 students, Deep Springs is the smallest college in the country and, quite likely, the mostatypical (非典型的). Located on a working cattle ranch on the California-Nevada border, Deep Springsis a private, residential, two-year college for men, committed to educating students for "a life of service to humanity." Founded by the electricity tycoon (大亨) L.L. Nunn in 1917, Deep Springs "curriculum"revolves around academics, labor, and self-governance. In addition to their courses, students are charged with running the 155-acre ranch and overseeing the functioning of the college. Students chair both the admissions and the curriculum committees.H) "Living in close community with one's teachers and fellow students, and being forced to take on adultresponsibilities, makes for one's growth as a person," says William Hunt, who graduated last year. "To exist for very long in a community like that, you have to get over the question of whether you're sufficiently talented or principled and get started worrying about how you can stretch yourself and your peers, how much you can manage to learn with them."I) Sterling College, in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, is also very small-fewer than 100 students. UnlikeDeep Springs, Sterling focuses its curriculum on environmental and social justice issues, but like Deep Springs it places a high value on personal responsibility and manual labor. According to its catalog, a college education at Sterling combines "rigorous academics, roll-up-your-sleeves challenges, and good old hard work."J) The average tuition at a small liberal-arts college is $30,000 to $40,000 a year, not including the cost of living on campus, as compared to $8,000 to $10,000 a year for tuition alone at a public university. Of the tiny colleges, only Deep Springs doesn't charge tuition or room and board; students pay only for books and the cost of traveling to and from college. If tiny schools are to become a player on the higher education scene, they will need to find a way to be truly affordable.K) Doing so may not be that difficult so long as they do not pattern themselves too closely on existing norms. We've come to believe that a good college should have many academic programs and excellent facilities, posh (豪华的) dorms, an array of athletic programs, and a world-class student activity center.Imagine a good college without a climbing wall! We also have accepted the idea that college presidents, and their many vice-presidents, should be paid like their counterparts in the business world and that higher education requires an elaborate, up-to-date technology infrastructure. All of this drives up the cost of education.L) The "trick" to making tiny colleges affordable, if that's the right word, is simplicity. At its core, education is a human-to-human interaction. Reflecting on his own college education, President Garfield once commented that an ideal college would consist of nothing more than the legendary teacher Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and a student on the other. The economics of a tiny college, in other words, might be similar to that of a tiny house. Because it is small, a tiny house costs less to build and less to furnish, insure, and maintain. But the economic benefits of a small house don't end there. Tiny homes discourage homeowners from buying stuff that they really don't need, because there's no place to put it.M) I'm a late convert to the idea of tiny colleges, and I fully understand the need for many diverse types of educational institutions. Academic research and job training are important, but tiny colleges aren't suited for either. The educational needs of a complex society are themselves complex, and no single model can meet all of these needs. But I'm now convinced there's an educational need that's now going almost completely unmet: namely, the need to help young people transition into adulthood. Tiny colleges can do this better than any other type of educational institution.N) The ultimate justification for a tiny college is the conviction that each of us comes into our full humanity by close interaction with those who know and care for us, and that one of the basic purposes of higher education is social. Although we give lip service to the idea that a college education will make us better people, when all's said and done, we think of higher education primarily in economic terms. We've come to think of higher education as a means to make a living rather than make a life. We've also come to see higher education as a private good rather than a public one. Tiny colleges are not the answer to all of our educational requirements, but they're an answer to one of our most basic educational necessities; the needto produce thoughtful, engaged, and compassionate human beings.36. One tiny American college situated on a cattle farm is devoted to educating students to serve mankindthroughout their lives.37. Much to the author's disappointment, the three institutions of higher learning where she taught largelyignore students' growth as social beings.38. Tiny colleges must be made affordable in order to play a role in higher education.39. According to a recent graduate from a tiny college, living together with faculty and fellow students isconducive to a student's growth as a person.40. Rather than going small, most American universities are trying to go big.41. In a certain tiny college, rigorous academic work and traditional manual labor are integrated.42. Tiny colleges focus on educating students to become well-rounded citizens instead of seeking their ownexpansion.43. The essence of education lies in the interaction between people.44. After her retirement, the author has decided to set up a tiny college in her hometown.45. Tiny colleges are justified as it is believed that our growth into full humanity comes through interactionwith people near and dear to us.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. If you're someone who has turned to snacking on junk food more in the pandemic (大流行病), you're not alone. Investigative reporter Michael Moss says processed food is engineered to hook you, not unlike alcohol, cigarettes, or other harmful substances. His 2013 book, Salt Sugar Fat, explored food companies' aggressive marketing of those products and their impact on our health. In his new book, Hooked, Moss updates the food giants' efforts to keep us eating what they serve, and how they're responding to complaints from consumers and health advocates.Processed food is inexpensive, it's legal, and it's everywhere. Companies' advertising is cueing us to remember those products and we want those products constantly. So the food environment is one of those key things that makes food even more problematic for so many people. Memory, nostalgia (怀旧) in particular, plays a big role in the foods we crave. Soda companies discovered that if they put a soda in the hands of a child when they're at a ball game with their parents, that soda will forever be associated with that joyous moment. Later in life, when that child wants to experience a joyous moment, they're going to think of soda. Many people seek comfort in the snacks they remember from childhood.Moss examines the way companies capitalize on our memories, cravings and brain chemistry to keep us snacking. One of the reasons I came to think that some of these food products are even more powerful, more troublesome than drugs can be is memory. What we eat is all about memory. And we begin forming memories for food at a really early age. And we keep those memories for a lifetime. Knowing this, the food industry spends lots of time trying to shape the memories that we have for their products. One of the features of addiction that scientists studying drug addiction discovered back in the 1990s was that the faster a substance hits the brain, the more apt we are as a result to act impulsively. There's nothing faster than food in its ability to hit the brain. For Moss, this puts the notion of "fast food" in an entirely new light as this isn't limited to fast food chains-almost 90% of food products in grocery stores are processed foods. Everything in the industry is about speed, from manufacturing to packaging.Overall, Moss outlines the industry's dependence on making their products inexpensive, superdelicious, and incredibly convenient for consumers. Now that more and more people care about what they put in their bodies and are wanting to eat healthier, these companies are finding it really difficult to meet that new demand because of their own addiction to making these convenience foods.46. In what way does Michael Moss think processed food is comparable to alcohol and cigarettes?A) They are all addictive. C) They are all engineered to be enjoyed.B) They are all necessary evils. D) They are all in increasingly great demand.47. What does the author say plays a key role in the foods we crave?A) The food environment. C) Convenience.B) Aggressive marketing. D) Memory.48. What do food companies do to capitalize on consumers' association with their food products?A) They strive to influence how consumers remember their products.B) They attempt to use consumers' long-term memories to promote addiction.C) They try to exploit consumers' memories for their products as early as possible.D) They endeavor to find what consumers remember about their products.49. How does the food industry operate from manufacturing to packaging, according to Moss?A) Placing the idea of fast food in an entirely new light.B) Setting no limit to the number of fast food chains.C) Focusing on how quickly the work is done.D) Prioritizing the quality of their products.50. Why are companies finding it difficult to satisfy consumers' demand for healthier food products?A) They think speed of production outweighs consumers' health.B) They believe their industry would perish without fast foods.C) They have to strike a balance between taste and nutrition.D) They are hooked on manufacturing convenience foods.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.Chimpanzees (黑猩猩), human beings' closest animal relatives, share up to 98% of our genes. Yet humans and chimpanzees lead very different lives. Fewer than 300,000 wild chimpanzees live in a few forested corners of Africa today, while humans have colonized every corner of the globe. At more than 7 billion, human population dwarfs that of nearly all other mammals—despite our physical weaknesses. What could account for our species' incredible evolutionary successes? One obvious answer is our big brains. It could be that our raw intelligence gave us an unprecedented ability to think outside the box, innovating solutions to thorny problems as people migrated across the globe. But a growing number of cognitive scientists and anthropologists (人类学家) are rejecting that explanation. They think that, rather than making our living as innovators, we survive and thrive precisely because we don't think for ourselves. Instead, people cope with challenging climates and ecological contexts by carefully copying others. In a famous study, psychologists Victoria Horner and Andrew Whiten showed two groups of test subjects-children and chimpanzees-a mechanical box with a treat inside. In one condition, the box was opaque, while in the other it was transparent. The experimenters demonstrated how to open the box to retrieve the treat, but they also included the irrelevant step of tapping on the box with a stick.Oddly, the children carefully copied all the steps to open the box, even when they could see that the stick had no practical effect. That is, they copied irrationally: Instead of doing only what was necessary to get their reward, children slavishly imitated every action they'd witnessed.Of course, that study only included three- and four-year-olds. But additional research has shown that older children and adults are even more likely to mindlessly copy others' actions, and infants are less likely to over-imitate—that is, to precisely copy even impractical actions.By contrast, chimpanzees in the study only over-imitated in the opaque condition. In the transparent condition-where they saw that the stick was mechanically useless-they ignored that step entirely. Other research has since supported these findings. When it comes to copying, chimpanzees are more rational than human children or adults.Where does the seemingly irrational human preference for over-imitation come from? Anthropologist Joseph Henrich points out that people around the world rely on technologies that are often so complex that no one can learn them rationally. Instead, people must learn them step by step, trusting in the wisdom of more experienced elders and peers. So the next time you hear someone arguing passionately that everyone should embrace nonconformity and avoid imitating others, you might laugh a little bit. We're not chimpanzees, after all.51. What might explain humans' having the largest population of almost all mammals?A) They are equipped with raw strength for solving the most challenging problems.B) They cope with the outside world more effectively than their animal relatives.C) They possess the most outstanding ability to think.D) They know how to survive everywhere on earth.52. What accounts for humans' evolutionary successes according to a growing number of cognitive scientists and anthropologists?A) They are better at innovating solutions.B) They thrive through creative strategies.C) They are naturally adaptive to ecological contexts.D) They meet challenges by imitating others carefully.53. What does the author think is odd about the findings of the study by Victoria Horner and Andrew Whiten?A) Children irrationally imitated every action of the experimenters.B) Chimpanzees could tell the transparent box from the opaque one.C) Chimpanzees could retrieve the treat more quickly than children did.D) Children omitted the step of tapping on the box with a stick to open it.54. What is anthropologist Joseph Henrich's explanation for the human preference for copying?A) It originates in the rationality of people around the world.B) It stems from the way people learn complex technologies.C) It results from people distrusting their own wisdom.D) It derives from the desire to acquire knowledge step by step.55. What point does the author want to emphasize when he says "We're not chimpanzees"?A) It is arguable whether everyone should avoid imitation.B) It is characteristic of human beings to copy others.C) It is desirable to trust in more knowledgeable peers.D) It is naive to laugh at someone embracing nonconformity.Part IV Translation (30 minutes)Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. From the moment we enter 47 as small children, and as we progress through primary and secondary education, we are laying the foundation for the life ahead of us. We must 48 ourselvesto work hard so that we can pass exams and gain the qualifications we will need to 49 a good job. We must also acquire 50 life skills so that we can fit in and work with those around us. And of course health education helps us to understand how we can stay 51 and healthy. For most people, this process ends when they are in theirmid-to-late teens. For others, however, it is the beginning of a(n) 52 of learning. After they finish school, many progress to 53 education where they will learn more useful skills such as computer literacy or basic business management. Others will enroll in a program of 54 education at a university where, with hard work, they will have the opportunity to graduate after three or four years with a well-earned degree. After that, they may work for a while before 55 to study for a higher degree—an M.A., for example, or a PhD. And if they live a long way from a college or university, they might follow a correspondence course using mail and the Internet. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that it is trying to track down as many as 386 piglets that may have been genetically engineered and wrongfully sold into the U.S. food supply. The focus of the FDA investigation is on pigs raised by researchers at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. They engineered the animals with two genes: one is a cow gene that increases milk production in the sow; the other, a synthetic gene, makes the milk easier for piglets to digest. The goal was to raise bigger pigs faster. There has been no evidence that either genetically altered plants or animals actually trigger human illness, but critics warn that potential side effects remain unknown. University officials say their tests showed the piglets were not born with the altered genes, but FDA rules require even the offspring of genetically engineered animals to be destroyed so they won't get into the food supply. The FDA, in a quickly arranged news conference on Wednesday prompted by inquiries by USA TODAY, said the University of Illinois would face possible sanctions and fines for selling the piglets to a livestock broker, who in turn sold them to processing plants. Both the FDA and the university say the pigs that entered the market do not pose a risk to consumers. But the investigation follows action by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in December to fine a Texas company that contaminated 500,000 bushels ofsoybeans with corn that had been genetically altered to produce a vaccine for pigs.Critics see such cases as evidence of the need for more government oversight of a burgeoning(新兴的)area of scientific research. "This is a small incident, but it's incidents like this that could destroy consumer confidence and export confidence," says Stephanie Childs of the Grocery Manufacturers of America. "We already have Europe shaky on biotech. The countries to which we export are going to look at this."The University of Illinois says it tested the DNA of every piglet eight times to make sure that the animal hadn't inherited the genetic engineering of its mother. Those piglets that did were put back into the study. Those that didn't were sold to the pig broker. "Any pig that was tested negative for the genes since 1999 has been sent off to market," says Charles Zukoski, vice chancellor for research. But FDA deputy commissioner Lester Crawford says that under the terms of the university's agreement with the FDA, the researchers were forbidden to remove the piglets without FDA approval. "The University of Illinois failed to check with FDA to see whether or not the animals could be sold on the open market. And they were not to be used under any circumstance for food."The FDA is responsible for regulating and overseeing transgenic animals because such genetic manipulation is considered an unapproved animal drug.57. The 386 piglets wrongfully sold into food supply are from________.[A] Europe [B] an American research organization[C] a meat processing plant [D] an animal farm58. The purpose of the transgenic engineering research is to________.[A] get pigs of larger size in a shorter time[B] make sows produce more milk[C] make cows produce more milk[D] make pigs grow more lean meat59. The 4th paragraph shows that the University of Illinois________.[A] was criticized by the FDA[B] is in great trouble[C] is required by the FDA to call back the sold piglets[D] may have to pay the penalty60. The FDA declares that the wrongfully sold piglets ________.[A] may have side effects on consumers [B] may be harmful to consumers[C] are safe to consumers [D] may cause human illness61. It can be inferred from this passage that ________.[A] all the offspring have their mothers' genetic engineering[B] part of the offspring have their mothers' genetic engineering[C] none of the offspring have their mothers' genetic engineering[D] half of the offspring have their mothers' genetic engineeringPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.A class action lawsuit has been filed against a prominent Toronto doctor by patients who allege he injected a banned substance into their faces for cosmetic purposes. The doctor hadalready been investigated for more than three years for using the liquid silicone, a product not authorized for use in Canada. Some patients say they are now suffering health problems and think the liquid silicone may be to blame. One of those patients is Anna Barbiero. She says her Toronto dermatologist told her he was using liquid silicone to smooth out wrinkles. what she says he didn't tell her is that it isn't approved for use in Canada. "I didn't know what liquid silicone was and he just called it 'liquid gold'," Barbiero remembers. After her last treatment, Anna discovered Dr. Sheldon Pollack had been ordered to stop using the silicone two years earlier by Health Canada. Experts say silicone can migrate through the body, and cause inflammation and deformities."My upper lip is always numb and it burns," Barbiero says. Barbiero is spearheading(带头)a lawsuit against the doctor, who her lawyer thinks might involve up to 100 patients injected with the same material. "The fact, a physician of his stature would use an unauthorized product on a patient because he thought it was okay, is really very disturbing," says lawyer Douglas Elliott.Ontario's College of Physicians and Surgeons is also investigating Dr. Pollack to see if, in fact, he continued to use the silicone after agreeing to stop and whether he wrote in patientrecords that he used another legal product when he used silicone. However, in a letter to the College, Dr. Pollack wrote that he had always told patients that the silicone was not approved for sale in Canada, and had warned them of the risks. And in Barbiero's case, "...at the time of her first visit, prior to her ever receiving IGLS treatment, I specifically informed her that the material was not approved for sale in Canada by the Health Protection Branch and that I did receive the material from outside the country ...I would like to emphasize that, as is evident on Ms. Barbiero's chart, I drew a specific diagram on the chart which I carefully discussed with and explained to Ms. Barbiero as I did with every other patient to explain the nature and likelihood of complications and the reasons and consequences of those possible complications."Dr. Pollack declined to speak to CTV News, or to have his lawyer discuss the case. None of the allegations have been proven in court. But the case raises questions about the ability of governing bodies to monitor doctors. "There's a larger message and that is: buyer beware," says Nancy Neilsen of Cosmetic Surgery Canada, "It's incumbent(负有义务的)on consumers to do their research."62. Doctor Sheldon Pollack was charged that ________.[A] he had prescribed wrong medicine for patients by mistake[B] he had treated his patients with something illegal, causing bad result[C] he had pretended to be a prominent surgeon[D] he had sold an unauthorized product in large amount63. What does the word "dermatologist" (Line 2, Para. 2) mean?[A] A person whose work is filling, cleaning and taking out teeth.[B] A person whose work is studying mental diseases.[C] A person whose work is healing eye diseases.[D] A person whose work is curing skin diseases.64. The reasons, from my per-spective, can be listed as follows. The first motivation behind this trend lies in the growing abili-ty of average people to help others. Unlike those in the early 21st century, people in current society are equipped with knowledge, skills, and even economic strength to provide more assistance to help the needy. What is more, this trend is largely associated with the sense of satisfaction of the public. When offering help on time, those who lend a hand realize their own value and thus part of the meaning of their life, which further strengthens similar behaviors in their daily life. The last factor is about positive energy in the mass http:// China,a country with traditional virtues of helping the disadvantaged, matters of the help among common people are great ingredients for the publicity of both tradition virtues and modern values. For me, it is much delighted to see that the public are more likely to lend a hand to others people's growing ability, the sense of satisfaction, and the spread of good deeds in the mass media, this trend will inevitably become a norm in oursociety.英语六级作文真题及范文篇六1、现在,各个场所“低头族”现象比较普遍2、出现这一现象的原因3、我对这一现象的看法和建议参考范文:The Impact of the Cellphone on Interpersonal CommunicationThe picture depicts a couple dating in the park.

How to Achieve SuccessSuccess, a word that seems elusive yet coveted by many, is often associated with hard work and perseverance. While some argue that success comes from luck or circumstance, I believe that true success is the result of dedication and effort. In my opinion, there are several key factors that contribute to achieving success. Firstly, setting clear goals and having a strong sense of purpose is crucial. Without a clear direction, it is easy to get lost and lose motivation. Secondly, consistent effort and hard work are essential. Success rarely comes overnight; it requires time, patience, and relentless determination. Finally, a positive attitude and the ability to overcome obstacles are also important qualities that successful individuals possess. To achieve success, I would like to offer the following suggestions. Firstly, it is important to define what success means to you personally. Whether it is in your career, relationships, or personal development, understanding your own definition of success is the first step towards achieving it. Secondly, create a plan and set specific, achievable goals. Break down your big dreams into smaller, manageable tasks, and track your progress along the way. Thirdly, stay focused and prioritize your time and energy on what truly matters. Avoid distractions and maintain a consistent work ethic. Lastly, don't be afraid to seek help and advice from mentors or others who have already achieved the kind of success you aspire to.In conclusion, success is not something that can be handed to us; it is something that must be earned. By staying focused, working hard, and maintaining a positive attitude, anyone can achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Social Interactions in Modern SocietyIn the modern society, people are increasingly becoming isolated from each other, as reflected in the picture above. The phenomenon has raised widespread concern. There are several reasons for this trend. For one thing, with the rapid development of technology, various social media platforms have become the main way forpeople to communicate. People tend to spend more time on their phones or computers, which limits face-to-face interactions. For another, the fast pace of life and increasing work pressure make people more eager to pursue personal interests and ignore relationships with others. To reverse this trend, I believe we should make more efforts to strengthen interpersonal relationships. First of all, we need to put down our phones and spend more time engaging in real-life interactions. Secondly, we need to create opportunities for communication, such as organizing activities or hosting gatherings. Lastly, we should be more empathetic and caring towards others, so as to build trust and mutual respect. Only by doing so can we create a more harmonious and connected society. In conclusion, social interactions are crucial for personal well-being and society at large. We must make concerted efforts to improve communication and foster stronger relationships with those around us.。

My suggestion is to produce vehicles powered by solar energy.Compared with mineral fuels such as gasoline, solar energy is inexhaustible in supply. The growth of cities and increase of vehicles call for more supply of energy, but there is a limit to the reserve of mineral fuels. So solar energy with its endless supply is one of our solutions to energy crisis. The second advantage of solar energy is its cleanliness. Traditional vehicles operating on gasoline give of exhaust, causing damage to human health and polluting the air. From the perspective of environmental protection, solar energy is a much better choice. After the new technology becomes economically feasible, the sky over cities will be brighter, and the air will no longer be a threat to our health.Because of the two benefits of using solar energy as a new fuel, we should spend more money on the research which can make our dream come true.问题解决型作文模板:With the ____of____,So it is of great importance for us to____ . a word bank following the passage.Read the pasage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. You probably haven't taken the time to think of all the work that went into creating the shirt on your back.I mean, how hard it could be to create fabric and 26 it into a shirt shape.Don't machines do all that?Well, creating fabric from cotton, which is the most 27 clothing material,is actually a processthat involves a lot of water,2,700 liters per shirt to be 28 .Take a look at the video below from National Geographic f or some more mind-blowing 29 about cotton clothing production.Clean water is 30 becoming one of the most sought-after resources in the world.Given how large the 31 and cotton industries are, they take up a lot of our fresh water demands across the world, according to The Huffington Post. The video from National Geographic was created to spread 32 of how environmentally harmful cotton is.But the situation can be made better.Through better water management and farming practices, water usage in cotton production can be cut down by 33 40 percent.Called“Better Cotton”,this environmentally conscious product will save millions of liters of water a year simply from 34 the demands of cotton production.Cotton doesn't have to go,since it is,after all,one of the most useful cash crops across the globe. However,as water supplies 35 ,farmers and consumers need to be more conscious of the effect that these products have on the environment as a whole.Section BDirections: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs.Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.The spoken webA)We're growing more used to chatting to our computers, phones and smart speakers through voiceassistants like Amazon's Alexa,Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana.Blind and partially sighted people have been using text-to-speech converters for decades.B)Out of these assistants,Siri is the most well-known.The assistant uses voice inquiries and a natural-language user interface (界面)to answer questions. The software adapts to users'individuallanguageusages, searches, and preferences, with continuing use.C)Some think voice could soon take over from typing and clicking as the main way to interact online.Butwhat are the challenges of moving to "the spoken web"?D)What use is written online content if you can't read? That is the situation facing illiterate(不识字的)African farmers. They are often denied crucial information the web offers many others. With a literacy rate in some parts of Africa at only 22.6%,farmers are often"underpaid for their produce because they might be unaware of the prevailing prices,"says Francis Dittoh,a researcher behind Mr Meteo,a speech-based weather information service.E)“The most frequently heard complaint is about rainfall predictions,”say s Mr Dittoh, who lives inTamale, northern Ghana. They tell us the methods their forefathers used to predict the weather don't seem to work as well these days."This is down to climate change,he believes.Yet knowingwhen it's going to rain is vital for farmers wanting to sow seeds, irrigate crops or take their animals out to the fields to feed on grass.F) Mr Dittoh says the idea of converting online weather reports into speech came from the farmersthemselves, after a workshop in the village of Guabuligah.“They came up with this,”he says.Mr Meteo takes the online weather forecast, converts it to a short recording in the appropriate language and makes it available on a basic phone.Farmers ring up to receive the information. The local language Dagbani is spoken by 1.2 million people but is not served by any online translation applications. The service was designed to be cheap and easy to run, says Mr Dittoh. He plans to begin field tests this month, working with Tamale's Savanna Agricultural Research Institute.G)The spoken web could also help the one-in-five adults in Europe and the U.S.with poor reading skills. But building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web-isn't straightforward. For software to understand pizza is served at Italian restaurants is easy.To cover multiple domains and to be able to have a conversation with users on every single topic is still a long way off.H)So although many computer assistants can answer simple questions about the weather and play musicfor us,anything resembling a wide-ranging human conversation is decades away.Artificial intelligence just isn't smart enough yet.Even turning your voice into text—automatic speech recognition-is one of the hardest problems to solve,as there are as many ways to pronounce things as there are people on the planet.D Siri has often been praised for its ability to interpret our casual language and deliver very specific andaccurate results, sometimes even providing additional information. But it is still somewhat restricted, particularly when the language moves away from stiffer commands into more human interactions. In one example, the phrase “Send a text to Jason,Clint,Sam,and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant”was interpreted as sending a message to Jason only, containing the text"Clint Sam and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant".It has also been noted that Siri lacks a proper editing function,as saying “Edit message to say:we're at Silver Cloud restaurant and you should come find us”generatesClint Sam and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant to say we're at Silver Cloud restaurant and you should come find us".J) Using voice interaction feels far more intimate than surfing the net the old-fashioned way. This is intentional as the informal tone of the assistant helps create an emotional attachment. But if something speaks,it must also listen. Our phones are always near us and they are collecting data about us all the time. This has already raised privacy concerns. The American Civil Liberties Union has stated that digital assistants create a threat to privacy from hackers. Some people have other concerns. They worry assistants will one day be used to deliver advertising directly to us.K)But digital voices need more personality to make them popular.Robots are not yet witty,Siri is boring. The benefits of using voice instead of tapping fingers obviously depend on the context.Doctors completing online forms about their patients by speech, for example, can dictate 150 words a minute, three times faster than typing on a keyboard. This enables them to spend less time on administration and more time with patients.L) Last year, speech recognition company Nuance helped a doctors'surgery in Dukinfield, near Manchester, set up a speech system for the practice's six doctors. Now they can dictate notes on a patient's health condition and treatment and a smart assistant automatically enters the information into the right fields on a web form.Previously, the doctors made voice recordings that were then transcribed by secretaries—a process that was costly and likely to cause delays. The new system means letters to patients now have more detail.。

Part I Writing 参考2024年06月四级考试真题答案速查(第1套)范文:University libraries are dedicated learning spaces, tailored to meet the academic needs of students. Opening them to the public risks compromising this exclusive environment, potentially limiting student s’ access to resources and quiet study areas. Moreover, public access introduces security concerns, such as the potential for theft, vandalism, or harassment, which could create an unsafe atmosphere for students. While promoting literacy is admirable, it should not come at the cost of students’ learning opportunities or safety. Instead, universities can explore alternative ways to engage with the community, such as collaborating with local libraries to improve their services or organizing reading events that are open to the public. These initiatives can foster a culture of reading without compromising the integrity and safety of university libraries. In conclusion, university libraries should remain exclusive to students to protect their learning environment and safety. Alternative methods should be explored to meet the reading needs of the wider communityPart Ⅳ Translation 参考译文:Siheyuan is a kind of traditional Chinese residential building, which is characterized by houses built around a courtyard, enclosing the courtyard in the middle. Siheyuan is usually warm in winter and cool in summer, offering a comfortable environment, especially suitable for large families to live in. There are many types of Siheyuan in different parts of China, of which the most typical one is in Beijing. Nowadays, with the development of modern cities, the number of traditional Siheyuan has gradually decreased, but because of its unique architectural style, Siheyuan is of great significance to the inheritance of Chinese culture and the study of Chinese history.。

How to Conduct Patriotic Education Among Today
These years have seen a widespread neglect of patriotic education in our society. According
to some official reports, many patriotic education been closed down or kept open to the public for other more profitable purposes, while many of our national heroes have given way to today’s pop stars in youth’s minds. If this current is allowed to
, I am afraid, things are bound to turn for the worse, with less and less sense of patriotism left in the youth.
The significance of patriotic education to our society can be seen from the following perspectives: Patriotic education can make youth more aware of the glorious history and culture of our nation, thus building up their sense of pride as Chinese. Furthermore, patriotic education helps youth value today’s hard-earned life so as to hold dearer their golden chances of enriching themselves with knowledge in peace.
So the most pressing issue for us now is how to effectively instill patriotism in the youth of today. In my opinion, the first step should be focused upon giving fuller play to the potential of patriotic education centers instead of running them for the purpose of making money. Then, greater efforts must be made to integrate patriotic education into the curriculums throughout a student’s education. In short, where there is effective patriotic education of youth, there is a greater enhancement of national cohesion.。
