Thestatueofliberty

Thestatueofliberty

ThestatueoflibertyThe Statue of LibertyIntroductionThe Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886, commemorating the alliance of the two countries during the American Revolution. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the statue has become an international symbol of freedom and democracy. This document explores the history, significance, and impact of the Statue of Liberty.1. Historical Background1.1 The Idea and PlanningThe concept of gifting a statue to the United States originated from Édouard René de Laboulaye, a French jurist and political thinker, who wanted to celebrate the American independence and the ideals of liberty and democracy. Heconceived the idea in the early 1860s, but it took several years before it was transformed into a tangible plan.1.2 Construction and AssemblyBartholdi designed the statue, while Gustave Eiffel, the renowned engineer behind the Eiffel Tower, designed the metal framework which supports the statue. The statue was constructed in France and then disassembled into individual pieces for transport to the United States. It was shipped across the Atlantic Ocean and reassembled on Bedloe's Island, which was later renamed Liberty Island.2. Symbolism and Design2.1 The Iconic SilhouetteStanding at a height of 305 feet, the Statue of Liberty represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She is depicted holding a torch in her right hand and a tabula ansata, a tablet inscribed with the date of American independence, in her left hand. Liberty's flowing robes and broken shackles at her feet symbolize freedom and the abolition of slavery.2.2 The Crown and Seven RaysThe crown worn by Lady Liberty features seven rays, which represent the seven continents and seven seas. This symbolizes the universality of the ideals of liberty and the welcoming nature of the United States, a nation built by immigrants from around the world.3. Significance and Impact3.1 Welcoming ImmigrantsThe Statue of Liberty has become a symbol of hope and freedom for millions of immigrants arriving in the United States. From the late 19th to the early 20th century, it was the first sight many European immigrants saw as they sailed into New York Harbor, representing their final destination after long and arduous voyages.3.2 Cultural IconThe statue's prominence and recognition in popular culture have made it a significant cultural icon. It has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and literature, cementing its place in the collective consciousness of the American people and people around the world.3.3 Tourism and National IdentityThe Statue of Liberty is one of the most visited landmarks in the United States, attracting millions of tourists each year. It has become synonymous with American values of freedom, democracy, and opportunity, reinforcing the country's national identity.ConclusionThe Statue of Liberty stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between the United States and France, as well as a reminder of the importance of liberty and freedom. Its symbolism and significance have made it an iconic landmark and a source of inspiration for generations. As it continues to stand proudly in New York Harbor, the statue serves as a constant reminder of the ideals upon which the United States was founded.。

New Freedom TowerThe twin towers of the World Trade Center were more than just buildings. They were proof of New York’s belief in itself. They were built when New York’s future seemed uncertain. The towers restored New York’s confidence. After they were damaged by terrorists, a new building plan by architect Daniel Libeskind was chosen as the plan for the World Trade Center site on Wednesday. The new building is planned to be 1,776 feet high, taller than the former trade center towers, which stood as the world’s tallest at 1,350 feet. Libesk ind’s tower also would surpass Malaysia’s 1,483-foot Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in the world.Libeskind’s design included a hanging garden, a memorial, a cultural center and Freedom Tower. The tower is now planned to cost 2 billion, and be ready for use in 2011. The memorial plans were redesigned in June, 2006. Its construction began in 2006 and the memorial is scheduled to open on Sept. 11, 2009.The Land of AustraliaWise people tell us that the land of Australia is perhaps the oldest in the world. Yet to us Australia is a new discovered country. However, it is hard to tell who first set foot on this great island. In those days, it was a great, wide, silent land where there were no towns, or even houses. The blue circle with the white stars on the top was his idea. After joining Ferrari I added the prancing horse on the back.”Since the European GP in 2000, Michael has raced with a modified helmet design. The blue circle on the top is now painted light red. The white Marlboro stripe around the top is now also red. The change was made to prevent confusion between himself and Barrichello, whose design was confusingly similar.San Francisco’sGolden Gate BridgeThe Golden Gate Bridge, completed after more than four years of construction at a cost of 35 million, is a visitor attraction recongnized around the world. The GGB opened to traffic on May 28,1937 at twelve o’clock noon. The Golden Gate Bridge’s 4200 foot long main suspension span was a world record that stood for 27 years. When decorating a bedroom, keep the following principles of Feng Shui in mind.Remove clutter: Clutter makes it difficult to relax and bedrooms are meant for relaxing. If you have several small items you must keep handy on your nightstand, collect them in a drawer or a box.Object and activities:Bedrooms are places of calming and romantic. Thus, items that connect with negative events should not be displayed in bedrooms, such as a wartime memento, though they may be very beautiful or valuable. Some romantic artwork or flowers, candles and paired objects should be put in bedrooms. It you have difficulty sleeping, try removing all other activities from the bedroom. Read, write, and chat in other areas of the house. The bed: The bed is the necessary item in every bedroom. Make sure that the door can be seen from the bed so there is a smooth flow of energy from the room’s entrance to the bed. The bed is best put across the room from the door. Do not store items undermeath the bed. A clear space under the bed promotes better rest.Mirrors and other furniture:A round mirror is a wise choice in abedroom. It means unity and completion. A mirror should be placed directly opposite a bed. Also, if the door cannot be seen from the bed , a mirror should e placed to make it visible. Tall objects move energy upward, If column-like items must be in the room, place them against walls around the edges of the room.Lighting: Bedroom lighting should not be too bright. Make sure lights are not too dim either.Welcome to the TowerBridge ExhibitionTower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognizable bridges in the world. At the Tower Bridge Exhibition you can enjoy breath-taking views from the high-level Walkways and learn about the history of the Bridge and how it was built. However, most keyboard instruments are not true members of the percussion family because their sound is not produced by the vibration of a membrane or solid material. Sound is produced on the piano by small hammers striking strings. The hammers are controlled when the player’s hands press the piano keys. Triangle, Percussion InstrumentInstruments in the percussion family are played by being struck, shaken, or scraped. In the orchestra, the percussion section provides a variety of rhythms. Percussion instruments are classified as tuned or untuned. The percussion instruments are an international family, with ancestors from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe representing musical styles from many different cultures. The triangle is made from a small round steel tube, and ia played by striking it with a steel beater. Its bright shimmering sound is untuned and just like the sound of a bell. The triangle first joined the orchestra in the late 1700s.Vitamin C and DNAMillions of people take large amounts of Vitamin C pills every day because they believe the vitamin will help them stay healthy. However, a new studysays Vitamin C may help produce substances that can damage DNA.Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied the effects of Vitamin C on a substance produced in the body from fat. That substance is called hydroperoxide. The hydroperoxide can be changed into substances that can damage DNA. The scientists found that Vitamin C easily changed the hydroperoxide into the gene-damaging poisons. Such damage is the first step toward developing cancel. However, the scientists said the study does not mean that Vitamin C causes cancer. But they said people should probably reconsider taking large amounts of Vitamin C pills each day. They say it is well known that Vitamin C is important to human health. But they say people an get enough Vitamin C in the foods they eat. Earlier studies have shown that eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains can reduce the chance of developing both heart disease and cancer. However, the study did not involve people. The Vitamin C was tested in the laboratory only. The results might be different in living cells.Anyway people should get Vitamin C food instead of taking huge amounts in pills to stay healthy. The United States government says people should get about eighty milligrams of Vitamin C each day in the foods they eat. The body cannot use more than two-hundred milligrams of Vitamin C and Vitamin C pills cannot replace the value of eating health foods.。

A POLICY ON GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS

ADDENDATO THE1997MASSHIGHWAYHIGHWAY DESIGN MANUALINTERIM GUIDANCEFORCONFORMANCEWITH THEAASHTOA POLICY ON GEOMETRIC DESIGNOFHIGHWAYS AND STREETS2001APRIL 2003INTERIM GUIDANCE TO THE1997 HIGHWAY DESIGN MANUALThe following information is addenda to the 1997 MassHighway Highway Design Manual. These changes were made to address updated design guidance from the AASHTO A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Street 2001 (Green Book). Significant changes were made from the previou s version of the AASHTO Green Book that affect the design of roadways in Massachusetts. These changes were made by AASHTO design committees to address the need for improved safety and mobility while recognizing the need for agencies and designers to be more sensitive in their approach to design. On March 14, 2002, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officially adopted the 2001 AASHTO Green Book as minimum design standards for projects on the National Highway System. At that time, the FHWA gave the states one year to address compliance of the Green Gook with their own standards. This document serves that purpose. Changes were made primarily to address items affecting the 13 AASHTO controlling criteria. In addition, this document includes dimension s in both the English and Metric systems of measurement, with most dimensions rounded to even English values.Designers should design to desirable standards where practical and minimum standards where feasible. This is the flexibility in design inherent in the AASHTO guidance. The context of the roadway should always be considered and exceptions to the minimum standards may be warranted based on constraints. The normally requires justification and documentation in the form of a design exception report to assure that the designer used sound engineering judgment to address safety and mobility objectives.MassHighway is currently considering more significant revisions to the Highway Design Manual relative to context sensitivity and community concerns. In the interim period between now and when a fully revised manual is issued, this document should be used to design all roadways in Massachusetts. Since most of the values contained in this document are within the range of the desirable and minimum standards in the 1997 Highway Design Manual, projects currently under design or construction may continue to use the 1997 values at the direction of the project manager.ADDENDUM TO THE 1997 HIGHWAY DESIGN MANUALPage 3.12.0 Section 3.4.1 Design SpeedFirst sentence is replaced with the following:Design speed is a selected speed used to determine the various design features of the roadway.Page 3.13.0 Section 3.4.1 Design SpeedTable 3.6 is replaced with the following Table:Table 3.6DESIGN SPEEDS(A Design Exception is required when speed selected is outside Table Values)Metric Units (meters)FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION U/R DESIGN SPEEDURBAN DESIGN SPEED SHOULD NOT BE LESS THAN 80 km/h FREEWAY/EXPRESSWAYRURAL 110 km/h SHOULD BE USED, IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, ADESIGN SPEED OF 80 km/h TO 100 km/h MAY BE USED ARTERIALURBAN MAY RANGE FROM 50 km/h TO 100 km/h. Background information
The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as is well known, was as sudden as it was dramatic; the event shocked nearly everyone. The New Yorkers, however, soon moved forward from the tragedy and started planning the reconstruction of the Lower Manhattan. They will build better and safer buildings in the future based, in part, on the lessons learned at the WTC. Contests were held for rebuilding the WTC site.

The Design Plan for Freedom Tower
I. About the text
The author illustrates to the readers the designing idea and the composition of the Freedom Tower. The Freedom Tower is the replacement for what was once World Trade Center to become the new Land Mark of New York City. While emphasizing enhanced security requirements, the tower’s design evokes classic New York City Skyscrapers in its elegance. Additionally, the new tower will serve as a model of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, embodying state-of-the-art energy-saving technology, environmentally friendly building materials, water conservation features, and ventilation systems. Both the officials and the builders are very confident with the design.

The revised design of Freedom Tower
The revised design of Freedom Tower
On June 29, 2005, a redesigned Freedom Tower was released, addressing security concerns raised about the original design. The new design retains essential elements of the original -- soaring 1,776 feet into the sky, its illuminated spire evoking the Statue of Liberty's torch -- but features a larger, cubic base set back further from West Street to protect the building against any future terrorist attemign of the Freedom Tower
The original design
When the first plan came out of the pack, it found slews of detractors. Gov. George Pataki ordered the design changes because police were concerned that the tower's placement adjacent to West Street, a major thoroughfare along the west side of Manhattan, would make it vulnerable to a truck bomb.
Discussing questions
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Why is the design plan of Freedom Tower called the revised plan? What are the important features of the building? What are the differences between the original design and the revised one? What essential features or elements of the original plan are remained in the revised plan? Why did Governor Pataki say that Freedom Tower was an economic engine? What is the commitment of the government as well as private sector? According to the author, what is the architectural tradition of NY buildings like Empire State Building and Crysler Building?
Background information
The first design plan of Freedom Tower
was unveiled in December 2003. On July 4, 2004, the cornerstone of Freedom Tower was laid. Just as construction was beginning, security concerns were raised, leading to a complete redesign of the tower. After nearly three months back on the drawing board, the new plans were released on June 29, 2005. The skyscraper is estimated to cost $ 1.5 billion.

The Memorial
The Memorial
On January 6, 2004, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation announced its selection of a single design for a memorial at the World Trade Center site: "Reflecting Absence" designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, will Walker will honor the 2,979 lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. Two large “voids” -- cascading pools sunken thirty feet into the footprints of the Twin Towers -- form the centerpiece of the design, which also incorporates extensive landscaping in the plaza
