新编大学英语文化阅读教程1教师用书Unit 8Warm-upStep 1 Talk about the picturesTai Chi is a form of exercise that began as a Chinese tradition. It’s based on martial arts, and involves slow movements and deep breaths. Tai Chi has many physical and emotional benefits. Some of the benefits of Tai Chi include reducing anxiety and improving cognition. It may also help you manage symptoms of some chronic conditions, such as breast cancer or heart failure.Tea, for thousands of years in the East, is regarded as key to keeping healthy, happiness, and wisdom. Studies have found that drinking tea may help with cancer, heart disease, and diabetes; encourage weight loss; lower cholesterol. Tea also appears to have anti-inflammatory effects.Step 2 Sharing your ideasThere are some common Western ways of staying healthy that are not that popular among Chinese people. Some western people like to go to gym and build muscles with high-intensity training and high-protein diet plan, and some others like sunbathing, swimming and jogging. They also share some of Chinese views on how to stay healthy, such as “don’t smoke” and“exercise regularly”.Reading 1Language focus1. hauled2. boastful3. pores4. sensible5. mania6. germs7. thump8. BCultural thinkingBased on my own experience, there are two tips for keeping a balanced and healthy lifestyle. First, we should eat mindfully. It’s important to distinguish between eating when we are hungry and eating for the sake of eating itself. When we are stressed or angry we should avoid using food as a coping mechanism, as it’s a habit that can easily go out of control and lead to eating disorders in the future. Second, we need to make time for exercise. Regular exercise is beneficial to the body and also the mind. The flow of happy hormones produced is the reason they call it a “runner’s high.” But we need to remember not to over exercise, which may make us weaker rather than stronger. Our body needs rest. It’s important to take some time to enjoy activities such as reading or meditating.Reading 2Language focus1. persists / persisted2. mindset3. malleable4. idealized5. homely6. genetic7. mirage8. combat9. unattainable10. consistentlyGlobal understanding1)The Ugly Duckling2)harm3)entity4)incremental5)growth mindset6)unattainable7)sense of self-worth8)plastic surgery9)healthy pursuitsDetailed understanding1) F2) F3) F4)T5)T6) F7)T8)TCultural thinkingI think the message “beauty is malleable” can be either beneficial or harmful, depending on how people interpret it. There are people who are mentally harmed due to appearance issues, because they usually suffer psychological problems after strangers laughed at them. For them, make-ups and cosmetic surgeries can be a life-saving straw. However, as the passage says, the promotion of “beauty is malleable” may cause many social and mental problems, like over anxiety about appearance and a unified standard of beauty across country. I suggest people should learn to admire their uniqueness of beauty and be more confident. At the same time, the inner beauty should be more valued in the society, not just the appearance.Integrated thinkingI know some young women having insufficient food every day in order to keep a slim body shape. Losing weight by over-dieting can be very harmful to people’s health. Being on a diet for a long time may lead to anorexia, depression, irregular menstruation and other diseases. We should first give them a scientific explanation of why their way of keeping healthy or beautiful is wrong, telling them the harm the wrong beliefs can bring about. We can also suggest some sensible approaches to staying healthy and beautiful. For example, in Chinese culture, practicing Tai Chi, jogging after dinner or the square dancing can be recommended.Culture mosaic1 The secret beauty issue Asian-Americans deal with every summerAnswer 1: Body shapesWomen in the East are very much concerned with the slenderness of their bodies. Compared to Western women, Women in the East focus more on keeping a slender figure. In the West, there has been a rise of body positivity with more curvy figures being embraced by the beauty industry.Answer 2: Face TypesFace types such as a heart face and oval face are another component of beauty in Eastern society. In contrast, the Western culture is more in favor of angular faces.2 TCM readily winning acceptance overseasI have two suggestions. First of all, I can hold international cultural exchanging activities, which not only promote traditional Chinese medicine on campus but also enrich international students’ knowledge of Chinese culture. Also, I can use new media for promotion. We can play some short videos that show the complete process of planting, picking and processing of herbs, to show international students the preciseness of the production of traditional Chinese medicine and strictness of quality control, so that they can know more about traditional Chinese medicine and pay more interest in it.3 China’s obsession with hot waterAnswer 1: Yes, I like drinking hot water. In China drinking hot water is not just a personal preference. Firstly, it is an effective way to keep warm, thus helping people alleviate period pain and stomachache. Secondly, Chinese people believe boiling water is an easy way to kill most of the harmful bacteria. Thirdly, according to the traditional Chinese medicine, our body need to keep a balance between yin and yang. Drinking warm water can nourish the yang in one’s body, which is like the powerhouse of your body.In contrast, Americans prefer cold or even ice water. In American restaurants, water is typically served in glasses full of ice cubes.Answer 2:No, I don’t like drinking hot water, unless I am sick and need some warmth for recovery. I believe the preference of drinking hot water is more like a tradition. As we have access to purified tap water in the modern society, there is no need to boil water for health reasons. Choosing a cup of cold water can be a good choice, especially in the hot summer.。

Unit 8 Coping with an Educational Problem
Part I Pre-reading Task Listen to the recording two or three times and then think over the following questions: 1. What was the teacher's purpose in asking his class the riddle? 2. What can you learn about Little Geoffrey from his answer to the riddle? Was he used to trying to think clearly? Had he formed the habit of making good use of his brain? 3. Is the story related to the theme of the unit — coping with an educational problem? In what way?
To drive this message home to such young Americans, I have a humble suggestion: a movie, or TV series, dramatizing just how difficult it was for this country to get where it is — and how easily it could all be lost. I offer the following fable. As the story opens, our hero, Kevin Hanley 1990, a 17-year-old high school senior, is sitting in his room, feeling bitter. His parents insist he study for his European history test. He wants to go shopping for headphones for his portable CD player. The book he is forced to read — The Wealth of Nations — puts him to sleep. Kevin dreams it is 1835, and he is his own great-great-great-grandfather at 17, a peasant in County Kerry, Ireland. He lives in a small hut and sleeps next to a pig. He is always hungry and must search for food. His greatest wish is to learn to read and write so he might get a job as a clerk. With steady wages, he would be able to feed himself and help his family. But Hanley's poverty allows no leisure for such luxuries as going to school. Without education and money, he is powerless. His only hope lies in his children. If they are educated, they will have a better life.

1. Roommates and Majors in American Colleges
Freshman roommates are usually assigned randomly, with no attention to their majors, they may take none of the same classes, and do not have to choose their majors the first year. In future years it’s very easy to change roommates, and in the junior or senior year it’s quite common for students to move to off-campus apartments. So there’s much less likelihood that freshman roommates will become lifelong friends.

New English Course (Book One)
III The dominant males in the rat population were the least affected by overpopulation. Each of these strong males claimed an area of the enclosure as his own. Therefore, these individuals did not experience the overcrowding in the same way as the other rats did. The fact that the dominant males had adequate space in which to live may explain why they were not as seriously affected by overpopulation as the other rats. However, dominant males did behave pathologically at times. Their antisocial behavior consisted of attacks on weaker male, female, and immature rats.

They continued meeting and talking secretly once or twice a week for the next year. They also continued to write each other letters every day. Elizabeth wrote: “…You cannot guess what you are to me---you cannot---it is not possible… it is something to me between dream and miracle.” Robert answered that he had never kept a journal before, but he had started one now. In it he wrote the date of every visit with her and how long it lasted. He even wrote the number of minutes they had been together and said that they added up to two full days in length.

Reading Comprehension(1)The U.S. Department of Labor statistics ( 统计)indicates that there is an oversupply of college-trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there is an overabundance ( 过多) of teachers, engineers, physicists and other specialists. Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren' t there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary(临时的) jobs which do not require a college degree. These "temporary' jobs have a habit of becoming permanent(永久的).On the other hand, there is a tremendous need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, and TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can handle and their annual(每年的) incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old difference that white -collar workers make a better living than blue-collar workers no longer holds true. The reason for this situation is the traditional myth(神话)that a college degree is a passport to bright future. Parents begin telling their children this myth before they are out of school. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they want to go to college or not doesn' t matter. Everybody should go to college. One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the 60 percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.1. What do the U.S. Department of Labor statistics show? _______.A. It can be concluded that_____.A. every young man and woman should go to college if possibleB. college education has become worse and worse in recent yearsC. people with a college education should receive a higher payD. fewer students should go to college but more be trained for skilled jobs(2)Not too long ago, anyone seventy years old was considered to have lived to a ripe(高龄的)old age. This is no longer true; the number of people in their seventies and eighties is steadily growing, and many of these people are still very active in society.Medical progress, coupled with a greater knowledge of personal care and hygiene( 卫生) is a major reason for this change. But the longer life-span(寿命), despite its obvious value, has given a new problem to today's world. Many older people can take care of themselves, but many others can't. More importantly, their children cannot take care of them in their homes as once the common practice. Nursing homes have been opened to provide such care.A nursing home is a long-care organization for people too sick or weak to care for themselves. These establishments are not hospitals, but residents may need medical attention at any time.Today there are about 22,000 nursing homes in America housing 1.2 million men and women. Eighty-five percent of the residents are more than 65 years old. They are fed and cared for, and limited activities are available for those who are able to move about. Except for reading and watching television, however, there is often little for residents to do. Visitors are the high point in their lives. Those elderly folk are not in the nursing homes for a short time. Most of them are not going to"get better" and return home.1. Most people in nursing homes are_______.A. lacking medical treatmentB. over 65 years oldC. too sick to be engaged in some kinds of physical activitiesD. not pleased to meet the visitors(3)Mr Enderby, the headmaster, stopped Anna one day at the school gate."Now, "he said, "I want you to tell me the truth, my dear. ""Naturally, "said Anna shortly, fearing something terrible had happened."I have had a most serious accusation(控告)made against you by Mrs Bond.""Mrs Bond?"said Anna, not understanding. Janet Bond was a quiet little mouse of a child. As far as Anna could remember, she had never had cause to speak an angry word to the girl."Mrs Bond, "went on Mr Enderby, "tells me that you scoldedher daughter yesterday afternoon.""Scolded?"cried Anna."I don't scold. At least not in school,'she added honestly."Mrs Bond's story, is that Janet was a little late back to school in the afternoon. She said that the child had to spend some time in the bathroom, which meant she set out from home a little late.""Just a minute, " said Anna, beginning to understand. "She did come late, very late. I had marked her absent, of course. Then she wandered in, when we' d started our paper-cutting, and I believe I said she was a nuisance(令人讨厌的). She didn' t appear to hear, and was certainly quite cheerful.""Ah, a nuisance. "Mr Enderby jumped on the word. You’re sure you only said a nuisance?""I may not even have said that, "Anna replied. "It was no more than slight displeasure that I felt ----and I certainly didn't scold."“Mrs Bond said that you called her child a blasted(该死的)nuisance . Is that true?"“Indeed it isn't, "said Anna. “The child-or the mother--has made it up!"Mr Enderby was satisfied with Anna's explanation.“Just as I thought, my dear, but of course I had to make sure."1. One of them rose and walked round to shake hands with me. He introduced his colleagues and then indicated a chair, in which I seated myself. After asking me briefly about my place of birth and my Royal Air Force experience, they began to question me carefully on telecommunications. Now I was confident, at ease with a familiar subject. They questioned me thoroughly, but 1 was relaxed now. The years of study and work began to pay off, and I knew I was doing well. I was even enjoying it. When it was over, Mr Symonds, the man who had welcomed me, leaned back in hischair and said : "Well, now, my colleagues and I are completely satisfied with your replies and we feel sure that, in terms of qualifications, ability, and experience, you are well suited to the post we have in mind. But we are faced with a certain difficulty. If we employ you, it means we must place you in a position of authority(权威)over a number of our English employees. Many of them have been with us for a long time, and we feel sure that your appointment wouldupset good relations within the firm. We could not offer you the post without the responsibility, and we would not ask you to accept one or two other positions of a different type. They exist, but they are not suitable for someone like you. So, I'm afraid, we will not be able to offer you the job."I felt suddenly weak, and I was quite unable to think. Yet somehow I managed to leave that office, realizing that I had either forgotten or completely ignored during the six exciting years of the war---my own black skin.1. Precipitation—occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.
Background knowledge
Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam. The water vapor or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air. Condensation—Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. This iscalled condensation.

Background knowledge
Human behavior’s effect on climate change

It took more than 20 years to broadly accept that mankind is causing global warming with the emission of greenhouse gases. The drastic increase in the emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide) within the last 30 years caused by burning fossil fuels has been identifi ed as the major reason for the change of temperature in the atmosphere.
Listening: Talking about weather is a common in daily conversation. People also use it to break the ice when talking to strangers. Students are familiar to this kind of talk. But their conversation is limited by their vocabulary. Teacher may help students broaden their vocabulary storage about weather efficiently, because the frequency of words used in weather report is high. Speaking:Firstly help students get familiar with some of the functional sentences used in the conversation on weather. Then lead them to talk about weather, climate and circumstances. Help students learn how to share information and how to chat freely.
Background knowledge
More than 80% of the world-wide energy demand is currently supplied by the fossil fuels coal, oil or gas. It will be impossible to fi nd alternative sources, which could replace fossil fuels in the short or medium term. The energy demand is simply too high. Another issue is the non-renewable characteristic of fossil fuels: It took nature millions of years to generate these resources, however we will have used them up within the next decades. Alone the shrinking supply will not make it possible to continue as usual for a longer time. The main cause of global warming is our treatment of Nature. The ultimate global warming solutions is to behave as part of a larger whole. It’s your personal decision whether you want to be the cause of global warming.
