Why do I need to make sure that I get enough?Iron is a mineral that helps to build red blood cells, muscle proteins, and healthy bones. Most importantly, iron helps the blood cells to carry the oxygen it needs for energy.During the teenage years, the need for iron increases. It is especially important for girls who have started menstruating. Getting the right amount of iron also improves performance in sports and in school too.How much iron do I need?Iron is measured in milligrams, and the amount you need will depend on your age, whether you or a guy or a girl, your particular body size and your lifestyle. In general, though, you can use these guidelines:Kids (1~10 years): 10 mg/dayGirls (11~18 years): 15 mg/dayWhat is anemia?Anemia is a condition in which you don't have enough red blood cells. The most common cause is not enough iron in your diet or losing iron because of heavy menstrual periods. Withanemia, you may feel weak and tired a lot, and you may look pale. Your health care provider may recommend a multivitamin with iron if it looks like you are not getting enough. You are most at risk for anemia when you don't eat enough foods rich in iron. If you are already anemic, your health care provider will probably suggest an iron supplement, taken several times a day. What can I do to make sure I get enough iron in the foods I eat?Check out the list of foods rich in iron. Use this list to bulk up on the iron-rich foods you eat, and to try new iron-rich foods. One important thing to know is that not all foods with iron are equal - an imal sources of iron (known as “heme” iron) are used more easily by the body than plant sources of iron (known as “non-he me” iron). To make the most of your plant and animal sources of iron, use a little teamwork! Foods high in vitamin C boost the body's ability to use iron. Try adding foods like citrus fruits and juices, cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes, and dark green vegetables to the iron-rich foods already on your plate --you'll boost both flavor and nutrition. One last tip: When shopping, choose breads, cereals, and pastas that say "enriched" or "iron-fortified" on the label. These foods have extra iron that can really boost your intake!Written by Heather Bell, MPH, RD, CHES, Adolescent Nutrition Fellow1. Foods can go bad if they get too warm. But for many of the world’s poor, finding a way to keep food cool is difficult. Refrigerators are costly and they need electricity.Yet spoiled food not only creates health risks but also economic losses. Farmers lose money when they have to throw away products that they can not sell quickly. But in 1995 a teacher in northern Nigeria named Mohammed Bah Abba found a solution. He developed the “Pot-in-Pot Preservation\Cooling System.”It uses 2round containers made of clay. A smaller pot is placed inside a larger one.The space between the 2 pots is filled with wet sand. The inner pot can be filled with fruit, vegetables or drinks. A wet cloth covers the whole cooling system.Food stored in the smaller pot is kept from spoiling through a simple evaporation process. Water in the sand between the 2 pots evaporates through the surface of the lager pot, where drier outside air is moving. The evaporation process creates a drop in temperature of several degrees. This cools the inner pot and helps keep food safe from harmful bacteria. Some foods can be kept fresh this way for several weeks.People throughout Nigeria began using the invention. And it became popular with farmers in other African countries. Mohammed Bah Abba personally financed the first 5,000 pot-in- pot systems for his own community and five villages nearby. In 2000, the Rolex Watch Company of Switzerland honored him with the Rolex Award for Enterprise. This award recognizes people trying to develop projects aimed at improving human knowledge and well-being.A committee considers projects in science and medicine, technology, exploration and discovery, the environment and cultural history. Winners receive financial assistance to help develop and extend their projects. The award is given every 2 years. The most recent one was given last year.57. In Mohammed Bah Abba’s system, the evaporation process is used to__________.[A] prevent the loss of water[B] cause dry and wet air to exchange[C] keep the stored food dry[D] take heat away from the inner pot60. Why did Mohammed Bah Abba get the Rolex Award for enterprise?[A] Because he was very creative.[B] Because he had a warm heart.[C] Because his invention was beneficial for the poor.[D] Because his invention was simple but scientific.61. What will Mohammed Bah Abba most probably be able to do after receiving theaward?[A] Live a much better life in his hometown.[B] Advocate a wider use of his invention.[C] Finance refrigerators for his community.[D] Raise people’s awareness of science.Passage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults. But the extent to which TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4,000 adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio.Media use totaled an average of 5 and one-half hours a day. More than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.Seven years later, in 2002, more than 7 percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was 21.Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8 percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.Doctor Primack says the study did not explore why watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports or socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence. The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, attend religious services and to vote.62. According to the first paragraph, what remains unsolved in the new study?[A] Who is more likely to be influenced by TV.[B] How teenagers are depressed by TV.[C] Whether teenagers are influenced by TV.[D] What should be done to help the teenagers.63. The more than 4,000 adolescents were chosen as the subjects of the study becausethey__________.[A] were free from depression[B] were keen on using the media[C] attached much importance to their health[D] could afford the time for the long-term survey64. What can be inferred from the 7th paragraph?[A] Depression is not related to the use of other media than TV.[B] Every extra hour of media uses increase the chance of depression.[C] Longer use of media other than TV does not increase the chance of depression.[D]The influence of movies, video games and radio on depression variesrespectively.65. In the last sentence of the 8th paragraph, “It” refers to __________.[A] depression[B] watching TV[C] lack of activities[D] the result of the study66. The sails, of course, did nothing unless there was wind, but the wind would not blow if there were not a temperature difference that made cooler air move into the space vacated by the rising warm air.And there would be no warmer air unless something heated it.That something is an atomic furnace 93,000,000 miles away that pours its radiation constantly on the day side of the turning Earth. It heats the air, makes it rise, sucks in other air, makes it blow on the sails and causes the boat to be pushed. So every sailboat is powered by an atomic engine—the sun.You Gotta Love ItAlthough the sun is very large pared to the Earth, it is one of myriad stars in a very large galaxy, which is one of myriad galaxies in a very large universe. But the sun is special to us because it is the closest star; it holds us in its gravitational grip. And its energy, raining down on the home planet, is utterly necessary for the maintenance of all life.I've often thought that among the things humans have elected to worship over historic and prehistoric eras, the sun is the most appropriate visible object. Sun worshippers were not too far off the mark. For life to continue here, the sun must keep on shining. Scientists say that if it died (unlikely in the extreme—it's good for another 5 billion years), in less than two weeks nothing wouldmove on the Earth's surface. Nothing would remain alive. This is easily seen when you think about how it gets cooler after the sun goes down, and is coolest just before it es up the next morning. If it's 80 degrees Fahrenheit at sunset and goes down to 60 just before dawn, the only reason the temperature goes back up is that the sun reappears and starts warming things up again. When Hell Freezes OverSuppose it didn't do that.In two days the temperature would go to 40, and then 20 (all water would start to turn into ice) and the next day zero, and then 20 below and 40 below, and so on.In about 10 more days, when the temperature was close to absolute zero, the gases of the atmosphere (nitrogen and oxygen) would freeze, putting a light snow of solid nitrogen onto the ground, followed by a fine powder of oxygen. The Earth would then have no liquid water, no atmosphere, and no life.Perhaps these facts refute the foolish sage who once said the moon was more important than the sun, because the moon shines at night, when we need the light, while the sun shines inthe daytime when we don't need it!(509 words)New Wordsinterviewn. a meeting in which a person is asked about personal views, activities, etc. 采访,访问voyagen. a journey or travel, esp. by water 航行,航海sailboatn. any boat that is moved by a sail or sails 帆船atomica. of atoms; having to do with atoms 原子的reportern. __kidv. tease playfully; talk in a joking way 开玩笑auxiliarya. 备用的;辅助的enginen. 发动机limiteda. kept within limits; restricted 有限的fueln. anything that can be burned to produce heat or power 燃料vacatevt. make vacant 腾出,空出furnacen. 炉子;熔炉radiationn. the act or process of giving out light, heat, electricity, or other radiant energy 辐射;发热;发光constantlyad. without stopping; again and again 不断地;经常地suckv. draw (liquid)into the mouth; draw into a position 吸,吮;吸入gottav.

by СÐÜLearning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences of my life.Although at times learning a language was frustrating, it was well worth the effort. My experience with learning a foreign language began in junior middle school, when I took my first English class.I had a kind and patient teacher who often praised all of the students. Because of this positive method, I eagerly answered all the questions I could, never worrying much about making mistakes.I was at the top of my class for two years. When I went to senior middle school, I was eager to continue studying English; however, my experience in senior middle school was very different from before. While my former teacher had been patient with all of the students, my new teacher quickly punished those who gave incorrect answers. Whenever we answered incorrectly, she pointed a long stick at us and, shaking it up and down, shouted, "No! No! No!"It didn't take me long to lose my eagerness to answer questions. Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but I also lost my desire to say anything at all in English. However, that state didn't last long. When I went to college, I learned that all students were required to take an English course.Unlike my senior middle school teacher, my college English teachers were patient and kind, and none of them carried long, pointed sticks! The situation was far from perfect, though. As our classes were very large, I was only able to answer a couple of questions in each class period. Also, after a few weeks of classes, I noticed there were many students who spoke much better than I did.I began to feel intimidated. So, once again, although for different reasons, I was afraid to speak. It seemed my English was going to stay at the same level forever. That was the situation until a couple of years later when I was offered an opportunity to study English through an online course. The communication medium was a computer, a phone line, and a modem.I soon got access to the necessary equipment, learned how to use the technology from a friend and participated in the virtual classroom 5 to 7 days a week.Online learning is not easier than regular classroom study;it requires a lot of time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course.I worked hard to meet the minimum standards set by the course and to complete assignments on time.I practiced all the time.I carried a little dictionary with me everywhere I went, as well asa notebook in which I listed any new words I heard.I made many, sometimes embarrassing, mistakes.Once in a while I cried out of frustration, and sometimes I felt like giving up.But I didn't feel intimidated by students who spoke faster than I did because I took all the time I needed to think out my ideas and wrote a reply before posting it on the screen. Then, one day I realized I could understand just about everything I came across, and most importantly, I could "say" anything I wanted to in English.Although I was still making many mistakes and was continually learning new ways to say things, I had finally reaped the benefits of all of my hard work.Learning a foreign language has been a most trying experience for me, but one that I wouldn't trade for anything. Not only did learning another language teach me the value of hard work, but it also gave me insights into another culture, and my mind was opened to new ways of seeing things. The most wonderful result of having learned a foreign language was that I could communicate with many more people than before.Talking with people is one of my favorite activities, so being able to speak a new language lets me meet new people, participate in conversations, and form new, unforgettable friendships. Now that I speak a foreign language, instead of staring into space when English is being spoken,I can participate and make friends.I am able to reach out to others and bridge the gap between my language and culture and theirs.by СÐÜ。

Why was the writer’s experience in learning a foreign language so meaningful?
Reference
According to the writer, learning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet most valuable experiences all in his life. He started to learn English when he was in junior middle school, where he learnt the language eagerly as the teacher was kind and patient. In senior middle school, however, his English teacher always punished those who gave incorrect answers. Consequently, he got intimidated and lost his joy in answering questions. Things didn’t improve much in college, as there were few opportunities for him to speak in class. It was only when he tried learning English through an online course that he finally became proficient. The online course was just as difficult as classroom learning, and required more time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course. He persisted and succeeded, though. Without doubt, the learning experience was rewarding and meaningful to the writer. It has taught him the value of hard work. In addition, it taught him about another culture, opened his mind to new ways of doing things, and allowed him to communicate with more people. In fact, he sees learning a foreign language as a most trying yet valuable experience.
