Unit 3 Under the sea李仕才一、阅读理解。
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language? In a recent article from The Wall Street Journal, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within a decade or so, we’ll be able to communicate with one another via small earpieces with builtin microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely rapid. It’s only a matter of time. Indeed, some parents are so convinced that this technology is imminent that they’re wondering if their kids should even learn a second language. It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating “No es bueno dormir mucho” as “It’s not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent(对应词) in the target language is actually the “easy part” of a translator’s job.But even this seems to be a discouraging task for computers. It’s so difficult for computers because translation doesn’t —or shouldn’t—involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time.Think about all the related clues that go into understanding an expression: volume, gesture, situation, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use. Therefore ,we should be very skeptical of a machine that is unable to interpret the world around us. If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better? Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.【解题导语】技术专家说随着技术的进步,即时翻译机器将在大约十年内出现在市场上。

Unit 3 Under the sea第一部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
AI began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then.I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me.I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves.I did not quite know what I was or what I should be.Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me.Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other.I was often sad,and saw no end to “the hard times”.My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home.I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule:Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.( )1.How did the author get to know America?A.From radio programs.B.From books and pictures.C.From her mother.D.From her relatives.( )2.Upon leaving for America the author felt .( )3.For the first two years in New York, the author .A.often lost her wayB.did not think about her futureC.studied in three different schoolsD.got on well with her stepfather本文叙述的是作者搬到美国之后,生活的磨砺让作者从一个悲观失望的人变成了一个积极乐观的人。

课时作业 33Ⅰ.阅读理解(2019·豫南九校高三质量考评)Fikiri Kiponda's path from accountant to marine (海洋的) conservationist was sparked by a chance encounter. After securing his dream job, Kiponda decided he wanted more. He wasn't quite sure what he was looking for until he ran across some turtle hatchlings. He didn't know it was turtle. Fortunately enough he got the right person to ask and he got motivated. That person was Nkindi, a staff member at the Watamu Conservation project who later invited him to volunteer on the project. He later left his accounting job and fully devoted himself into the world of sea turtles. Now, he runs and spends his time nursing critically endangered sea turtles back to health.Sea turtles have been around for nearly 110 million years and are now considered highly endangered. Their preservation rests on activities of conservationists such as Kiponda as these turtles face numerous threats and signs of their extinction in the next 50 years.Local fishermen traditionally catch them to supplement their own low catch rates and sell them for their oil. As changes are made to accommodate more hotels for tourists, there is less available beach land for turtle nesting.Kiponda's passion has now spread to his community, changing their attitude towards se a life preservation with his “bycatch release programme.”Through this program, fishermen are now paid for returning turtles accidentally caught in their fishing nets. The healthy ones are tagged and released into the marine park while he takes care of sick and injured turtles back to health. Before the launch of pioneering spirit like this, turtles caught by fishermen were used for their meat and their oil extracted (提炼) for its medicinal properties.“Releasing the turtle back into the ocean is a very goo d feeling, like, you feel like you've done something concrete and I guess everybody would love to do that...so I guess it's unique work.”本文主要讲述了Fikiri Kiponda从一名会计到一位投身于拯救濒临灭绝的海龟的海洋自然资源保护者的故事。

Almost halfthe students at my middle school were Korean and almost all of them listened to Korean music, especially K-pop. I had never been interested in it. It sounded too strangeto me, but all changed in the sixth grade when the huge hit Gee came out. All my friendswere singing the chorus and imitating the dance. Gee fever sucked me into K-pop. Itbecame my life. I listened to K-pop non-stop and filled my iPod with it. In a month,I had memorized the names of countless members of boy and girl bands and stuck picturesof my singer " boyfriends " on my walls. I would ditch my weekend art and math classesand go to concerts with my friends. This would always result in my mom shouting thatI was wasting my life. My momthought K-pop was trash and wanted me to like classicalmusic as she did. But classical music made me sleepy.Every day during middle school I went to a K-pop gossip and news site called. This made mewant to audition even more. After watching those videos, I saw that most of the currentstars weren ’t that amazing in their auditions and that each singer had improved somuch through training. I had never had vocal lessons(声乐课)and didn ’t think ofmyself as a good singer."But if they could do it, I could do that too, " I thought.1.What caused the author to fall in love with K-pop?A. 贵阳市2014高考英语(新人教版)一轮阅读训练(33)附答案课时作业(三十三) [选修7 Unit 3 Under the sea](限时:35分钟)[2012·浙江卷]阅读理解Easter(复活节)is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9meter rise would wipe out their habitat(栖息地)completely. The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators(捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 78 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate(迁移) to higher ground—but theyalready occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up.The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations.Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.36.The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to ________.A.show the importance of Easter DayB.introduce the issue about bunniesC.remind people of Easter traditionsD.discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies37.The word “culprit”(Paragraph 2)is closest in meaning to ________.A.criminal B.judge C.victim D.producer38.According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators because they ________.A.are exposed to more skillful huntersB.have moved to habitats with fewer plantsC.haven't adapted themselves to climate changeD.can't change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring39.The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that ________.A.both are affected by less snowB.both are affected by rising sea levelsC.neither can find enough foodD.neither can migrate to higher places40.Which best describes the writer's tone in the passage?A.Approving. Held annually in New York City, the event attracts thousands of dogs and theirhandlers, each competing for the top prize, Best in Show. Westminster is so popular that some people call it aCanine(犬科)Super Bowl. But did you know that lots of smaller—and verydifferent—dog shows take place each year across the country? One of them was held recently in Jacksonville, Florida. It was the Pals and Paws Agility Trial.About 100 dogs took part in the three-day event, held March 8—10 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. In a dog contest, dogs compete on an obstacle course. They run through tunnels, weave through poles and jump through hoops and over hurdles. Handlers direct the dogs through obstacles. Dogs are judged on how long it takes them to complete the obstacle course and how well they perform each of the challenges. Ribbons and titles are awarded as dogs complete different events.Dog agility(灵活)is a popular sport, widely practiced around the world. Participants say it strengthens the bond between handler and dog while providing exercise for both.Does your dog have what it takes to compete? Liz McGuire says preparation is key. “You can keep your dog in condition by exercising them and feeding them the right foods, ”she said. “The dog has to train, sort of like a football player. ”McGuire competes in agility trials with five Australian shepherds(牧羊人).Suzanne Wesley’s gray poodle(狮子狗), Raya, was in top shape at the Jacksonville event: Raya won the Agility Dog Champion title. It is one of the competition’s highest awards.
