Efficient ways to improve your speech
Find it difficult to make a wonderful speech in public? ___1___
Use more facial expressions
One psychologist feels that our facial expression is responsible more than anything else for the impression others have of us. A smile in which the eyes participate is extremely communicative. ___2___ People tend to mirror your expression, so try to show how you feel about a topic or an idea through your facial expression.
Get rid of your inner fear
___3___ The way to handle it is to put it to work for you, get into action, as Shakespeare observed, action cures fear. The first is to admit it. Do the thing you fear and it will be the death of fear itself. Another simple aid at the last minute before you begin, is to take a few deep breaths. This will help get the butterflies in formation and also keep your voice under control.
Polish your voice
Our voice is the main instrument we possess for communicating with people. So invest in a tape recorder, practice your speech by speaking it into the microphone and then listen to it. You can even have others join in the evaluation of your strong points and your weaknesses or faults as well. Simply reading a newspaper, a magazine or stories to your children out loud can help.
___4___
Strengthen your memory
Psychologists tell us that most individuals don’t use above ten percent of their inherent capacity for memory. How to enhance the power of memory? First, have a burning desire to remember. It’s difficult to recall anything without wanting to do so. ___5___ Our success depends greatly on our ability to concentrate. The next principle is repetition, we learned many things in school by repetition.

Sportsmanship isn’t just about shaking hands after the game. It’s about helping young athletes enjoy the spirit of competition, deal with adversity. ___6___
Character is a word that gets used often, but its true meaning may be hard to explain to a young mind. ___7___ By raising standards early, an athlete can both give and expect mutual respect during their course of competition.
One way to teach the idea of sportsmanship is to let the athlete know that they should do their personal best and to treat teammates and opponents in the same fashion they wish to be treated.
___8___ It also helps them off the field as well.
It’s important to the young athlete to understand that for as many victories as they hope to have, they must face losing if they’re going to play their sport. An effective method is to have a young athlete pick out well-known popular athletes, particularly in their sport or sports of interest, and look up their statistics. ___9___
___10___ Practice and skill building should be offset by times of goofing off (偷懒), perhaps practicing with crazy costumes or with fun music, and not coaching in the traditional sense. This one little thing can do wonders in reminding the athlete not to take anything too seriously and to have fun doing what they have chosen to participate in.
A.Sports are designed to be enjoyable.
B.Having sports is a course of sweat and tears.
C.Sport is a matter of failure and success to some degree.
D.It’s ultimately a choice to hold oneself to a higher standard.

My heart went out to the drama teacher I read about in a recent news item. Each parent from
her class insisted that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical — “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend. ____11____
For starters, Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.
I was assigned the non-singing role of Miss Watson, the Maid. I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one line to learn, “That’s what I say.” ____12____ Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.
At last, our production was put onstage. Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with “That’s what I say.” I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. ____13____ That night, I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a stand-out in a supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage, is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt. ____14____ If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.
And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson, to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be. ____15____
A.So it is in life.
B.It was not to be.
C.It was anything but a great part.
D.My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.

Around the world, people are realizing the significant problems caused by plastic waste. In the last 65 years, we have become increasingly dependent on plastic. It’s easy to understand why: it’s cheap to produce, light — therefore easy and cheap to transport — and incredibly strong and durable. ___16___
One popular solution to the problem is to prohibit single use plastics. In the British
supermarkets, shoppers are encouraged to make more environmentally-friendly choices in packing and transporting their food. ___17___ Some governments have even promised to ban the use of single-use plastic altogether by the not-too-distant future.
However, such plans may not be beneficial to eliminate (消除) the use of single-use plastic altogether. ___18___ This is not just because of its low cost. It’s also because infection and cross-contamination (交叉感染) are minimized. Plastic packaging is also crucial in the food industry. It ensures that food is safe for consumers.
Another issue is that alternative materials to plastic are often more environmentally harmful than plastic. Take paper bags, for example. ___19___ The process requires cutting trees, the emission of greenhouse gases and the production of poisonous chemical waste. Even more pollution is created when paper bags break down.
Clearly there is a need to reduce plastic waste and its impact on the environment. ___20___ Industries that rely on single-use plastics for people’s health and safety must be considered. Moreover, alternative materials must be evaluated strictly regarding their own environmental impact.
A.But it’s these advantages that also make it so harmful.
B.They are very fragile and rarely reusable, unlike plastic.
C.One of the fields where single-use plastic has a vital role is medicine.
D.However, simply banning their single use may not be the best option.
E.It also boosts the local economy and save costs in managing littering and waste.
F.Bans on single-use plastic items like drinking straws are also coming into place. G.According to a research, they require four times more energy when produced than a plastic bag.
Adolescence is a crucial period when the subject experiences a process of growth, the development of his own personality, and the discovery of himself.
____21____
They are often upset when their children praise the homes of their friends and regard it as a slur on their own cooking, or cleaning, or furniture, and often are foolish enough to let the adolescents see they are annoyed. ____22____ Such a loss of dignity and descent into childish behaviour on the part of the adults deeply shocks the adolescents, and makes them resolve that in
future they will not talk to their parents about anything private.
Disillusionment(幻灭感) with the parents, however good and adequate they may be both as parents and as individuals, is to some degree inevitable. Most children have such a high ideal of their parents, unless the parents themselves have been unsatisfactory, ___23___ Parents would be greatly surprised and deeply touched if they realized how much belief their children usually have in their character and infallibility(一贯正确), and how much this faith means to a child. If parents were prepared for this adolescent reaction, and realized that it was a sign that ___24___ , they would not be so hurt, and therefore would not drive the child into opposition by resenting and resisting it.
Victorian parents believed that they kept their dignity by retreating behind an unreasoning authoritarian(专制的) attitude; in fact they did nothing of the kind, but children were then too cowed to let them know how they really felt while___25___ , but on the whole this is a healthier attitude both for the child and the parent. It is always wiser and safer to face up to reality, however painful it may be at the moment.

Nick Tebbey, national executive officer of Relationships Australia, says spring is the perfect season to start getting to know your neighbours. “When the weather starts warming up we’re all spending more time outdoors.” It makes sense that the best way to get to know a neighbour is to first make sure they actually know you’re neighbours. ____32____“ There are always
opportunities to make a connection and they can be as small as a nod,a wave or a friendly good day,” says Tebbey.
To put yourself in the way of these opportunities, Tebbey suggests timing your outings to take place“when other people are out and about as well”. When it comes to actually introducing yourself to your neighbours, Tebbey notes it’s important to do what feels comfortable, whether that’s leaving a note on a building notice board or chatting to someone while you wait for the elevator.____33____
Once you’ve introduced yourself to a neighbor, you can start conversations. ____34____“ If they’re gardening, ask what they’re planting–be interested in what people share.”Tebbey says. And once someone tells you their dog’s name or where they’re about to go on holiday, try your best to keep that in mind so you can continue the conversation next time you cross paths.
“It’s not about grand gestures or sharing everything about yourself with your neighbours.
____35____” Tebbey says.“ It’s small but meaningful interactions and taking interest in each other’s lives, but without any sense of expectation.”
A.In fact, it’s almost the opposite.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to let a friendship go, even if you’ve been friends for a long time. Scientists visiting tiny Henderson Island in the South Pacific recently made an alarming discovery. ____41____They calculated there were 38 million pieces of plastic. “This is not an issue to ignore. We need to do something now to protect the sea.” said one scientist.
Plastic waste in the sea has long been known about, but only now are we discovering the true extent of the problem. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, so all the plastic ever produced still exists somewhere. Around 95% of plastics made are not recycled, and large amounts enter the sea. Currents(洋流) collect this waste in large circular systems called “gyres”. ____42____
The problem gets worse as plastic breaks down into very small pieces, or “micro plastic”,
____43____ Humans also eat these fish, and micro plastic has even been found in tap water around the world. The plastic on Henderson Island accounts for just 2 seconds’ worth of global annual plastic production. That production will be three times by 2050.
____44____ While diving in Greece, young Boyan Slat noticed there was more plastic waste than fish. He decided right then to dedicate his life to solving this problem. Boyan thought, why
move through the sea when the sea can move through you? So he started The Ocean Cleanup project, which places very long floating barriers in the Pacific. Currents then concentrate the waste naturally so it can be collected and recycled. He hopes to reduce the patch by 50% in just five years.
“Sea plastic is a symbol of the negative effects of our lifestyle and technology,” he says. “____45____ Protecting the sea from plastic is a good place to start!”
A.it goes unnoticed and finds its way to human bodies.
B.This is eaten by fish and leads to massive species loss.
C.To work with the currents would help collect the waste.
D.Our aim should be to create a new lifestyle for this century.
E.However, there are some young minds working to clean up the sea for future generations. F.Although remote and previously untouched by humans, the island was covered in plastic waste. G.One of the largest is in the Pacific Ocean, an area now known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.
