Another person’s enthusiasm—the strong wish and interest to do everything, was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right into my eyes. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart, my family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county centre, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives.
I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary. My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and
stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.
14. What’s the following is right before the author’s stepmother came into his life?
A.People had noticed his cleverness.
B.His father had been away from home for a long time.
C.He knew how to show his enthusiasm properly.
D.He was considered a rude boy with wild behaviors.
15. Which of the following expressions about the author’s stepmother is NOT right?
A.She praised him from the bottom of her heart.
B.She gave some writing lessons to him at home.
C.She moved the family into the centre of the county.
D.She planned the future for each family member.
16. What does the author mean by “I wasn’t the only beneficiary”?
A.There were other boys who behaved as badly as he did.
B.His stepmother bought typewriters for other family members, too.
C.Not only he but also his family gained from his stepmother’s enthusiasm.
D.Other family members’ enthusiasm has great effects on his stepmother.
17. Which of the following is best the title of the passage?
A.Enthusiasm, a Power for Success B.Enthusiasm, a Challenge for All
C.Enthusiasm, a Gift from my Father D.Enthusiasm, a Tradition in Families
C
It can be extremely difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute run will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there
was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s related to dealing with functions and controlling mood. Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “If exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
18. What did the new research find?
A. Running fast benefits all of us.
B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial.
D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
19. How did the researchers get the result?
A. By interviewing some sportsmen.
B. By using different drugs on participants.
C. By collecting information on the Internet.
D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
20. Which is related to our happiness according to the passage?
A. Cycling.
B. Medicine.
C. Blood flow.
D. Colors.
21. What is the main idea of the text?
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
C. Running really benefits us mentally.
D. People prefer running on a treadmill in winter.
D
Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.
These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded
mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.
Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet.
These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.
22. Where can you probably find cloud forests?
A.In North America.B.Far from the equator.
C.In an African country.D.At the foot of mountains.
23. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.Europe is short of plant types.
B.Scientists are working on a list.
C.Cloud forests are getting smaller.
D.Cloud forests house many plants.
24. What will be discussed in the following part of the text?
A.Ways to protect cloud forests.
B.Goals of cloud forest protectors.
C.Difficulties in planting new trees.
D.Successes of getting wide support.
25. Where can we probably find the text?
A.In a storybook.B.In a travel guide.
C.In a chemistry textbook.D.In a geography magazine.

She moved our family into the county centre, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.”可知,继母把家搬到了县中心,规划每个家庭成员的未来,从心底赞美作者。

显然,“在家给他上写作课”不符合文章内容。

故选B。

16. 词句猜测题。

根据文章最后两句“My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.”可知,作者说“I wasn’t the only beneficiary”的意思是不只是他,他的家人也从继母的热情中获益。

24. 推理判断题。

最后一段先描述了目前云雾林遭到严重破坏,但是根据最后一句“ There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions. (我们还有很多工作要做,但用创新式的解决方案去拯救云森林仍然是可能的)”可知,作者认为用创新性的办法是有机会拯救云雾林的,所以文章接下来会重点讨论保护云雾林的方法。

故选A。

E选项“When a child wins a game with his team, he feels recognized”(当一个孩子和他的团队赢得一场比赛时,他会感到被认可)符合题意,故选E项。

30. 根据下文“Youth sports can help stop negative behavior(青少年体育可以帮助阻止负面行为)”以及
“Teens who have positive influences and friends feel less of a need to join in risky behaviors.(有积极影响和朋友的青少年觉得不太需要参与危险行为。

写作范文
Hello everyone,
I’m Li Hua, a student in the International Senoir High School. There will be the 25th sports meeting in my school, and I feel extremely honored to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony.
As is known to all, healthy living habits can keep us fit, protect us from getting ill and help us start a new day with full energy. For the purpose, our school holds the sports meeting every year. In order to build up physical and even mental strength, it’s necessary for us to take effective action. Firstly, we’d better have a balanced diet, such as taking more fresh fruits, meat and vegetables, while less snacks. Furthermore, what matters a lot is setting aside enough time for daily exercise, which is beneficial to our health. Last but not least, having enough sleep will surely keep you energetic for a whole day.
If you follow these suggestions and start a healthy lifestyle, I firmly believe that you will lead a happy life. Let’s exercise and actively take part in the school sports meeting.
That’s all. Thank you!。
