第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Spending money on time-saving services reduces stress and boosts(增进)happiness, according to a
new research, but shockingly, few of us do it.
Whillans, a professor at HBS said, “ Buying time helps to protect us from the stress in our lives caused by time pressure, and the feeling that we don’ t have enough minutes in the day to complete our tasks. ’’The effect was clearest in the Canadian experiment, in which 60 working adults were given $40 to spend in two different ways. One weekend, they were told to spend the money on a material purchase—a gift for themselves. The next weekend, they were instructed to spend the $40 on anything that saved them time, from paying the neighbor ’ s kid to run errands (跑腿)to taking an Uber instead of a bus.
On the day they made the time-saving purchase, they felt happier, in a better mood, and lower feelings of time stress than on the day they bought a material purchase,’’ said Whillans.
The biggest surprise to the researchers was how few people would spend money on time-saving services. When they asked 98 working adults how they would spend a “windfall” of $40,only two percent named a purchase that would save them time.
“ One reason,’’ said Whillans,is that we' re very bad at remembering how much we hate doing certain tasks once the suffering has passed. That makes us less likely to take active steps to avoid that overburdened feeling in the future. ” But another possible cause is good old-fashioned guilt. “If you feel guilty about getting someone to clean your house for you, then you might get less happiness from outsourcing (外包)that task,” said Whillans,u or you might just be less likely to spend your money in that way. ’’

4、What do the underlined words “that overburdened feeling”in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The good old-fashioned guilt.
B.The feeling of spending’money on goods.
C.The stress of having someone clean your house.
D.The discomfort when completing tasks we hate doing.
22.(8分)A parent might place his daughter’s drawing on the fridge out of a love for his child rather than for the wonderful image, but for many people, that children art is actually quite amazing. In fact, adult artists were often inspired by children’s drawing. For the museum-goers out there who tend to point to a piece of modern art and say, “My kid could have made that !”It’s worth remembering that often, that’s actually just what the artist had in mind.
For many kids, drawing is exciting not because of the final product it leads to, but because they can live completely in the world of their drawing for a few minutes. Even children are scribbling(涂鸦), they’re representing through action, not through pictures. Liane Alves, a prekindergarten teacher, recalled a student who presented her with a drawing featuring a single straight line across the page. Alves assumed the child hadn’t given too much thought to the drawing until he explained that the line was one of the stems (茎) from The Princess and the Pea, one of the fairy tales they read in class.
Maureen Ingram, who’s a preschool teacher at the same school, said her students often tell different stories about a given piece of art depending on the day, perhaps because they weren’t sure what they intended t o draw when they started the picture. “We as adults will often say, ’I’m going to draw a horse, ’and we set out. . . and get frustrated when we can’t do it, ”Ingram said. “Children seem to take a different approach, where they just draw, and then they
real ize, ’it is a horse. ’”
And what about those odd or scary-looking drawings? Does that mean kids are telling themselves stories that are odd or scary? It’s hard to say, but it’s rarely a good idea to over-interpret it. Ellen Winner, a psychology professor, pointed to parents who worry when their kid draws a child bigger than the adults. What’s most important to remember is that“children’s art has its own logic,” Winner said. “Children are not being crazy. ”
1、What may the author agree most probably according to the first paragraph?
A.Children are more skilled and creative than adults in art.
B.There might be similar patterns in artists’ and kids’ drawings.
C.No one knows what the drawing experience means to children.
D.Parents should become drawing teachers of their children.
2、The author gives the example of Liane’s student to prove that
A.simple scribbles from children are meaningful
B.not all the children like drawing in the classroom
C.children’s drawing is too complicated to understand
D.teachers often find it hard to teach children drawing
3、What is most important for children while they are drawing?
A.The best image.
B.Drawing process.
C.A copy of real things.
D.The ending of story.
4、What should parents do if their children draw things odd or scary?
A.Ask teachers to show the children how to draw.
B.Help the children to draw the picture again.
C.Invite other children to have a discussion about the drawing.
D.Take it easy and listen to the story behind the picture.
23.(8分)The Australian beach town of Byron Bay has a traffic problem, especially during holidays, when local streets are full of cars. But now it's changed. The world's first fully solar-powered train runs on a restored(修复)train line that was out of use for more than a decade.
The solar systems on the roof of the train send power to a set of batteries that replace one engine;the other engine is still in place and can provide backup power in an emergency. As the train brakes,it generates more electricity, like a hybrid car.At a train station, the train can be plugged in to pull more power from solar systems on the platform roof.If there's a long period without sun---somewhat unlikely in this part of the world---the train can also plug in to get renewable energy from the local electricity supply.
"The large solar systems on the platform roof coupled with the solar systems on the train roof produce more solar energy per day than is required to operate an hourly return service," says Holmes, development director of the nonprofit Byron Bay Railroad company, which runs the train. With one full charge, the train can make 12 to 15 trips.
Volunteers fully restored the train to its old condition to attract more riders, which should take more cars off city streets of the beach town. The train fits 100 seated passengers, with room for more to stand, and also has a luggage
room for bikes and surfboards.A ride costs a little more than ﹩2.
The nonprofits thinks it's a model that could be replicated (复制)elsewhere."Our service has had no government support or funding at all,but for this to be replicated or improved upon, the key is for government to work with enterprises on the program." Holmes says."Our service provides an eample of how the sun's energy can be used for sustainable transport solutions."
1、Why is the solar train brought into use in Byron Bay?______
A.To attract visitors B.To reduce traffic
C.To fight pollution D.To use solar energy
2、Where does the train get energy on sunless days?______
A.From its engines B.From a hybrid car
C.From the platform roof D.From the local electricity supply
3、How does Holmes feel about solar energy equipment?______
A.It is labor-saving B.It is easily operated
C.It is time-consuming D.It is power guaranteed
4、What can be inferred about the solar-powered train from the last paragraph?______
A.It may be popularized in the future
B.More scientific research should be done about it
C.It could be of little use in solving energy problems.
D.Financial support from the government is badly needed
24.(8分)It’s not common that a grandmother aged 89 is crowned Queen of Icebergs in north America, but when it does happen it’s quite the sight.
On a recent trip to Iceland, Judith Streng became that grandma after her son attempted to take a photograph of her sitting on an ice structure that looks like a throne (宝座) at Diamond Beach in Jokul. Shortly after Streng sat down to pose, the piece of ice broke off and floated into the water.
“I thought it was safe. One girl had been on it and then two girls at the same time, and it was v ery secure with them. When I got on it, it started to shake and a wave was coming in. A very large wave came in and made the throne kind of shake, and I could tell that I was slipping off,” Streng told ABC News.
Streng’s story went hot after her 24-year-old granddaughter Catherine tweeted a text message exchange she had with her father about the incident. “My grandmother almost got lost at sea in Iceland today!”
Catherine, who teaches English in Seoul, South Korea, explained via Twitter that her father described the scene vividly. He has a PhD in English, and described the event in the following words, “She climbed to the throne after a
wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and removed the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave left, it lifted the throne and carried her out into the sea with the tide.”

25.(10分)You may think that the story of Pygmalion (《卖花女》, 1913) --- in which people are judged by the way they talk --- is something that only existed in the days of British high society. But thanks to etiquette (礼仪) expert and author William Hanson, we realize that little has changed during the past 100 years.
In a BBC radio program, Hanson released a list of common words used in British English that could reveal whether a person is “common” or “fashionable”.
And yet here comes the interesting part: While some of us might go through life using fancy words, dressing in ways that make us appear more well-off than we really are, there are wealthy people in the world who try to hide their riches because they want to be seen as “normal” instead of “showy”.
Beatrice, for example, is a New Yorker who inherited (继承) millions of dollars. She told The New Y ork Times that she has a habit of removing the price tags (价签) from her clothes so her house staff don’t see them and feel uncomfortable.
“We don’t want that ‘Wow’.” said Scott, also a New Yorker, who had just inherited over $50 million. “We’re just not the type of people who wear it on our sleeve.”
1、What does William Hanson find?
A.People failed to judge others’ manner.
B.People judge others by their way of talking.
C.People tend to use more polite words.
D.People meet impolite persons frequently.
2、What do rich people prefer to do?
A.To hide their riches
B.To earn more money.
C.To think highly of their wealth.
D.To judge others by their wealth.
3、Why did Beatrice remove the price tags on her clothes?
A.To show off her fashion sense.
B.To change people’s attitude to rich people.
C.To pretend to be normal.
D.To avoid making people around her uncomfortable.
4、What does “it” in the last sentence mean?
A.The price tag.
B.The brand label.
C.The inheritance contract.
D.The Times magazine.
