Mrs. Palin spoke as she walked to the front of the classroom, “Next Wednesday, I’ll give you a test to check your ability as a conductor. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the compo ser’s music.” And then she smiled, “You’ll receive the test in front of your classmates.”
“What? A test in front of the classmates? It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.
“Who’s that person?” I wondered. I didn’t know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this? I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”
Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms’s compositions and its relevant music notation (乐谱). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn’t perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name, “Jill, it’s your turn.”

It was a hot and dry summer. The beach near the city was crowded with a lot of people, from little kids to the aged, who planned to beat the heat in the water. They enjoyed themselves leisurely. Some were playing beach volleyball, some were making sand castles, and some were doing sunbathing.
Among them, there was a group of 10 boys aged between 12 to 15 years old trying to take an adventure. At first, they intended to hire a yacht (游艇), but due to the wind and the waves, the yacht rides were forbidden on that day. After a while, the boys decided to challenge themselves to race in the sea. They made a deal that the one who swam the fastest would win the race and deserve a huge treat from the group. Most of the boys agreed, except for a few. A boy in the group warmed them of the danger, as the waves weren’t constant. Some boys began to hesitate, but some didn’t listen to him and started their race.
Everything went so well. Suddenly, waves from the sea rose a lot and most of the boys in that young group struggled to reach the beach. However, three boys who considered themselves very brave, decided to ignore the waves and swim further out to sea for more excitement and fun.
Although many people on the beach shouted at them and asked them to swim back immediately, they continued to swim further from the beach. The wind became stronger;all of a sudden, one boy was washed away by a rising wave and the other two boys were so scared that they shouted for help and swam as fast as they could to the beach. However, no one on the beach risked his life to save the boy as the waves were so alarming;and the crowd were asked to move to a safe place.

"Almost showtime!" Ms. Tuttle called. "Costumes on and smiles out!"
I frowned at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school's Winter Wonderland show. I'd learned in science class that no two snowflakes are alike, but all of us snowflakes were wearing the same costume.
"Grandma, I really don't feel like being in the show," I said.
Grandma Lani looked up from my ballet shoe. "Why, my grandchild?”Grandma Lani is Japanese American, and she has always lived in Hawaii. "You love to dance."
I used to love to dance. Then Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine Abrams. Christine got to wear a feathery skirt that fluttered like a cloud every time she twirled(旋转). And she got to do a dance onstage all by herself.
The snowflakes just ran to look like a blustery snowstorm. I sighed. "I don't like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn't there. There are so many of us.”
“I would notice. So would your parents.” Grandma paused as Christine walked toward us holding a basketful of pretty snowflake ornaments(装饰品).
Christine handed one to me. "Break a leg, Jack" she said, smiling. That means good luck. The ornament had my name on it.
“Thanks. You too,” I said. It was nice of her to paint everyone's name like that.
Grandma Lani smiled at Christine. "What a beautiful costume!” Christine left, her skirt fluttering beh ind her.
I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What's bothering my Jack?”
“You came all this way,” I whispered. "And you won't be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes.”

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought
nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room. hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no-idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the old lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mary. Jane began banging on Mary's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around then, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” cried Tom. However, Jane refused to give up.
“I know Mary's still inside.” She said she was familiar with Mary's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

“I don't want to go.” Maria moved her feet slightly and hung her shoulders. Mom continued packing a bag. “We're going to Uncle Rich' s in Montana for summer vacation. He's your father's brother, and we go there every year.”
Maria stormed out of her mom's room and said angrily, “Nobody ever thinks of me!” “That's enough. We're going.” replied Mom angrily, too.
Their August vacation came sooner than Maria wanted. Before she knew it, she and the family were at Uncle Rich's farm. Uncle Rich grabbed her dad and hugged him. Maria grabbed he r bag, “I'm going to my room.”
“Wait a minute, Maria,” said Uncle Rich. “I have got something to show you.” At the barn (牲口棚) Maria saw the horse. It was of medium size. It had a fine, soft black coat and one white foot. There was a wide white patch (斑) th at ran down the center of its face. Maria fell in love with it at first sight. “Wow! What a horse!”
“He's a mustang,” said Uncle Rich. “Mustangs are free horses who live in the wild. We found him stuck in the mud down by the river. My friend and I roped hi m and managed to get him out.”
Maria kicked the dirt. “Can I help care for him?” Then she felt her heart beating in expectation.
Uncle Rich laughed. “You bet. The more hands we have, the better. Just don't get too attached. Once we're sure he's okay, we will have to set him free. Mustangs went from over a million at the beginning of the 20th century to less than 17,000 in 1970. They were hunted illegally for meat.”

Ruby, a l6-year-old girl in Chicago No.1 High School, always looked up to her cousin Wanda, who was two years older than her and was studying in a university. Ruby was the only child in her family, so she regarded Wanda as her “immediate” sister. Wanda was not only beautiful, but also smart. She always had best grades in the exams and she could play several kinds of musical instruments, especially the piano. Therefore, she was very popular in her school and she had a lot of friends. In Ruby's eyes, Wanda was a perfect girl so she considered Wanda as her example. Ruby was still in high school but she wanted to go to the same university as Wanda did. Ruby was even in the same clubs in the same high school as Wanda used to be.
Wanda knew that Ruby looked up to her and she appreciated that. On Christmas Day, Wanda sent Ruby a sweater with her university's logo on it as a gift. Ruby was so happy when she got the sweater. She put it on right away and wore it almost every day.
One day in class, Ruby raised her hand to answer the teacher 's question and the teacher, who had ever been Wanda's head teacher, accidentally called her Wand a. “Oh, I'm sorry, but you just look a little like her,” the teacher said. “I'm so glad," Ruby said. From that day on, Ruby studied harder and harder because Wanda did well in all her subjects. Ruby just wanted to catch up with her.
When college admission results came out, Ruby was so nervous to visit the website to see if she got admitted. She closed her eyes and slowly opened them. She found out that she got accepted!

If you are like many students, your time is limited so it is important to get the most educational value out of the time you have. Speed of learning is not the only important factor, however. Becoming an effective and efficient student is not something that happens overnight, but putting a few of these tips into daily practice can help you get more out of your study time.
One useful way to become a more effective learner is to simply keep learning. In one article published in Nature, it was reported that people who learned how to juggle(玩杂耍)increased the amount of gray matter, which is associated with visual memory. When these individuals stopped practicing their new skill, this gray matter disappeared. So, if you are learning a new language, it is important to keep practicing the language in order to maintain the improvement you have achieved. If you want the new information you just learned to stay put, keep practicing and rehearsing(默诵)it.
Another one of the best ways to learn is to focus on learning in more than one way. Find different ways to rehearse the information. This might involve describing what you learned to a friend, taking notes, or drawing a mind map By learning in more than one way, you're further strengthening the knowledge in your mind. According to researcher Judy Willis, "The more regions of the brain that store data about a subject, the more interconnection there is. And this interconnection of data means we have learned, rather than just memorized."
While it may seem that spending more time studying is one of the best ways of effective learning, research has proved that taking tests actually helps you better remember what you've learned, even if it isn't covered by the tests. The study showed that students who studied and were then tested had better long-term recall of the materials, even
of information that was not covered by the tests. Students who had extra time to study but were not tested had significantly lower recall of the materials.

Computer technology has become a major part of people's lives. This technology has its own special words.
One example is the word mouse. A computer mouse is not a small animal that lives in buildings and open fields. It is a small device (装置) that can be used to move the pointer (指针), or the cursor (游标) on the computer screen. Computer expert Douglas Engelbart developed the idea for the mouse in the early 1960's. The device has a wire at one end, just like the tail of a mouse,so it is called a mouse.
People who are experts are sometimes called hackers. A hacker is usually a person who writes software programs in a special computer language. But the word hacker is also used to describe a person who tries to steal information from computer systems.
Another well-known computer word is Google. It is a name of a popular search engine which people use to find information about almost any subject (主题) on the Internet. The people who started the company named it Google because in mathematics (数学), googol is an extremely large number. It is the number one followed by one hundred zeros. When you google a subject, you can get a large amount of information about it.
If you google someone, you might find that person's name on a blog. A blog is the shortened name for a web log. A blog is a personal web page. It may contain stories, comments, pictures and links to other websites. Some people add information to their blogs every day. People who have blogs are called bloggers.
Blogs are not the same as spam. Spam is unwanted sales messages sent to your electronic mailbox. The name is based on a funny joke many years ago on a British television show—Monty Python's Flying Circus. In the show, each time the friends try to speak, another group of people start singing the word spam very loudly. This prevents the friends' discussion—just as unwanted sales messages bother communication over the Internet.

As most people know, in the past few years, sandstorms have swept across many countries, polluting the air and disturbing daily lives of human beings. Saharan sandstorms have increased about 10 times during the half-century since the 1950s, causing topsoil loss in nearby countries. In Mauritania, there were just two sandstorms a year in the early 1960s, but there are 80 a year today.
In desert areas, sandstorms are most commonly caused by either thunderstorm outflows, or by strong pressure gradients which cause an increase in wind speed over a wide area. In some cases, dust and sand may set a limit to a shallow depth by a low-lying temperature change. In other cases, dust may be blown as high as 6,100 meters high. Drought is another cause of sand storms. Poor farming practices make dust and sand free of protection from the wind. Dryland farming is one of the most serious practices. A sandstorm can transport and carry large amounts of sand. Desert is the key source of sandstorms.
Sand storms have also been shown to increase the spread of disease across the globe. Virus in the dust is blown into the atmosphere by the storms. Some diseases may not be urgent at the very beginning, but they can develop into deadly ones if left untreated. For example, a breathing problem can lead to lung cancer, while dry eyes lead to blindness.
Sandstorms cause soil loss from the dry lands, doing harm to agriculture. Sandstorms also reduce visibility, affecting aeroplanes and road transportation. In addition, sandstorms also discourage visitors from visiting these places, thus striking tourism.
So what should we do with the frightening sandstorms? Some experts put forward practical suggestions as follows. For one thing, more funds ought to be put into tree planting and forest protection so as to keep more water resources within the surface of the earth. For another, governments of all countries should make laws on environmental protection. For example, banning the use of throw-away chopsticks and punishing illegal tree cutting. Scientists should also study and find ways to cut down the degree of its destruction and to improve the whole environment.

One of the most important lessons you should learn is that after you drink, you shouldn't drive. I got a DUI, which means Driving Under the Influence. If you get pulled over(靠边停车)and you smell like an alcoholic(酗酒的人), the police will ask you to take a breathalyzer(呼吸分析器)test. When you do the test, you have to blow really hard into a machine, which will then tell you if you are over the limit(限制)to drive a car. The limit is usually 0.08 blood alcohol(酒精)volume(容积), so if you pass that, you are going to jail(监狱).
Even though you won't go to jail, you will be suffering the consequences(结果)of your mistake for a long time. Here is a list of the things you will have to do if you get a DUI: go to court, go to alcohol education classes, and pay a lot of money for fines. If you don't want to pay, you will have to do community(社区)service. I go a DUI two years ago, and I am still suffering the consequences. I still have 56 hours for community service. I have to update my insurance policy(保险单)and deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
You will waste a lot of time and money. It gets difficult to get a job, because you have been arrested(逮捕)for some reason. It's not worth it. If you are thinking about going out to celebrate an party with friends and family, do one of the following: get a designated(指定的)driver, take the bus or train, or call a taxi. It may cost you a little bit of money, but compared with the money you will lose if you get a DUI, its nothing. Don't drive after drinking. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______

Colleges are attaching too much importance to tests. Students who receive higher scores on the SAT and the ACT are considered to be more intelligent and as a result they are usually admitted to better schools.
However, these tests don’t necessarily ensure one’s future success in life. To become better test-takers than
others, some students would like to make more preparations. Several SAT and ACT classes are offered by various companies and individual tutors, giving rich students a better chance to improve their scores. Some students even take medicine before tests. Although it is not proved that taking these drugs will increase a student’s score, the nature of the drug is to increase alertness, concentration, and mental processing speed.
In addition, these tests can’t show the skills and characters that are a key part to success. According to Bob Schaeffer of the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, creativity, perseverance and self-discipline(自律) are a few basic qualities that are useful in the world that aren’t measured by these tests. A high test score tells you nothing about how a student will handle the future life or how well they will adapt to their surroundings.
What colleges can do i s to weigh the students’ academic track, such as what classes they took and how difficult they were, or what extra curricular activities the students were involved in. These things don’t necessarily predict what the students will do in college, but if the admissions would pay more attention to four years of hard work, they might get a more successful and well-rounded group of graduates.
