I came to the United States ten years ago. I would always say that I was trying to study, but there were always things like work and my kids that would not allow me to start.
Now I realized that those were only excuses. What stopped me was that I was afraid to start studying again. I always believed I would learn by myself.
One day, however, my son told me that he was sad because his friends would come over and I didn’t understand them because I didn’t speak English. He was also sad because I could never help him with his homework. That same day, I told myself, “Rocio, you have to start believing in yourself and you will see you can make it.”
The next day, I went downtown to look for a big banner (横幅) in front of the school which said that they offered classes for adults. I came in to see if I could join, but the classes were closed already. That night I took the kids to the movies, and on the way back, I told them we would take a new route.
I ended up getting lost. That’s the way I found Chaffey College. The following Monday, I went to ask for information. They told me that summer school was starting that week.
That’s how I started studying English last summer. It is difficult, but I have had great rewards. My daughter had written a story for school. It was about the female they most admired and why. She wrote that I was the person she most admired because I had started going to college. I will never forget this.

If you ask most people what water tastes like, they’ll probably tell you that water has no taste and they may give you a funny look. But if you were a fruit fly (果蝇), asking another fruit fly, that question might have a different answer.
To a fruit fly, water has a taste. Scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water because this information may help in learning how other animals — or even individual cells (细胞) — manage to use water in the right way. Water is important to life, but too much or too little can be deadly to a living creature (生物). So by understanding how the fruit fly tastes water, researchers may learn more about other living things.
According to the new study, a protein (蛋白质) called PPK28 makes it possible for a fly to taste water. Proteins build cells and tissues, fight disease and carry messages between cells. It’s not surprising that a protein is responsible for the fruit fly’s ability to taste water.
The PPK28 protein is part of a larger family of similar proteins. One of these related proteins is used by mammals (哺乳动物) (including humans) to taste salt. Scientists have not found a protein that enables humans to “taste” water.
In the experiment, Cameron and his team compared normal fruit flies with fruit flies whose taste cells had been disabled. The fruit flies were given a special chemical that would glow (发光) when the fly used the PPK28 protein. Then the scientists led the flies to water. When the normal flies tasted the water, the PPK28 protein lit up — showing that it was in use.
The fruit fly in particular is so interesting that some scientists are hard at work creating a complete map of the fruit fly brain. This map will show all of a fly’s neurons (神经元) and help scientists understand how the neurons work together.
8. How do most people feel when asked the taste of water?
A.Amused. B.Frightened. C.Disappointed. D.Annoyed.
9. Why do scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water?
A.To decrease (减少) the number of the fruit fly.
B.To know more about other creatures (生物).
C.To manage to use water correctly.
D.To describe the taste of water.
10. What do we know about the PPK28 protein?
A.It can make humans taste salt.
B.The fruit fly can’t live without it.
C.It enables the fruit fly to taste water.
D.The fruit fly uses it to avoid illnesses.
11. What will the scientists continue to work at?
A.Making the PPK28 protein.
B.Telling more information about cells.
C.Creating maps of human brains.
D.Studying the fruit fly’s neuron systems.
Sometimes people come into your life and you know that they were sure to be there at once. They may come for some reasons: teach you a lesson, or help to find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that they will affect (影响) your life in some serious ways.
Sometimes things happen to you. Maybe they seem terrible, painful (痛苦的) and unfair at that time. But later, after getting over those difficulties, you may realize your further ability. Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people you meet may affect or change your life, your success, your failure and create who you are. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are possibly the most poignant and important ones.
Enjoy every day, even every moment for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your sights high, try to learn more, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.
You can make your life anything you wish. Create your own life, go out and enjoy it.

14. The writer’s advice is that we should ________.
A.never talk to strange people B.learn as much as we can
C.never get over difficulties D.not believe ourselves but others
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Create and enjoy your life B.Hold your head up

I started my dormitory life this year and met my roommate Kate. In the process of getting along, we found that we both enjoy reading and watching science fictions. With similar hobbies, our relationship immediately became closer. We went to class and canteen together every day in pairs.
Although we considered each other as the best friend, there were frictions in our life style. I was never very neat, while Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything.
Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other and never stopped trying to change the other person’s life style. Our friendship went ups and downs like a boat on the sea. Dissatisfaction with the other was accumulating.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I was rather irritated (激怒). How could she act like that? I could not control my temper either. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. Neither of us was willing to calm down to be a good listener.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly I began to move.
